Glacian internal borders are natural. In the North, the separating border between the provinces of Ivalo and Tornio is the mountain range called The Kaarme (meaning Serpent. There are two passes through the mountains, one is man-made, a passage beneath the mountain that takes three days to cross on foot. The other to the far east of the mountain range beneath the mountain called Vildeskraag.

Bordering Tornio to the south is Glacia's major river Tulva. It runs from the mountain ranges in the east towards the west where a delta creates the small province of Salo. Tampere, resting on the Northern channel of the delta is the district shared simultaneously by both Salvo and Tornio.

Virratt, bordering on Nharkava in the south sees most of the warm weather and therefore most of the agricultural work. It also houses the largest population of landens.

Culture:
Caste System in Glacia

**Let me begin by explaining that though there are always exceptions, a story is made of the conflicts of its norms and exceptions. If everything is an exception, the story fails for having no conflict.  Please respect that and adhere to the Caste System and Civil War when applying a character for Glacia.

Dark Jewels
More important than class in Glacia is how deep an individual stands within the abyss, providing, of course, that that individual is a woman.  Mother Night is, after all, a Mother a feminine and maternal figure which births, creates, heals and nurtures. Only females can understand the burdens of creation and blood.

Opportunities begin early for those who exhibit dark jewels at their Birthright.  The best tutors are provided, audiences with the Queens of their districts and provinces, the best healers, etc.  After the Offering, Dark Jewels (both Birthrights and Descents) are given responsibilities as household leaders, those eligible are brought into Queen’s circles and triangles,  independent wealth is created in the granting of fiefdoms to the loyal darks.

Dark Jewels who have family members that are lighter jeweled are seen as directly responsible for their lighter jeweled relatives. This can be considered the one con on being a Dark Jewel in Glacia, since a trespass by Light Jewels are seen as being the fault of a light hand with them by their DJ relatives. As a result, some Dark Jewels have gone as far as incorporating compulsion spells in their control of their LJ relatives.

Light Jewels
A Birthright Ceremony which yields a light jewel with the potential to descend as a dark jewel is a precarious position to be in. For the years between Birthright and Offering, things remain uncertain for those with only a light jewel.  Depending on family status and the jewels of other family members, the individual might be treated to the best in expectation of a dark jewel, or might be watched and treated as though their fate were already decided.

An individual who descends and does not achieve a Dark Jewel finds all opportunities for financial advancement or independence either completely closed or severely inhibited.

Individuals with predominantly dark jeweled family members may find their existence somewhat merciful with their care entrusted to family members, while those with light jeweled family members may find themselves under near constant surveillance by dark jeweled neighbors or even the leaders of the district.

It is a silent secret in the territory that LJ's who step out of line with the wrong DJ's tend to disappear or be relocated or change in some fundamental way one day out of the blue.

Blood

The Blood that receive no jewel at their birthright  remain in a state of weariness. If their Offering grants them a descent, then they are forever in the condition thrust upon the Light Jeweled of Glacia with the same pitfalls and difficulties. On the other hand, if their offering does not yield a jewel, these unjeweled Blood are treated no differently than Landens making their lives at once more secure for not having to worry about being watched constantly or even held up to the rules of the Blood. Many of these unjeweled Blood often do live as though they are landens.

The Silent Civil War

Glacia is the icy jewel of Kaeleer, boasting a larger ratio of dark to light jewels than any other territory in the realm. Other territories, in fact, look to Glacia, in an attempt to understand what is it that makes the territory so successful and prosperous despite being so prodigiously cold and difficult to farm. But the secrets of Glacia are incredibly well kept and visitors remain just that until they can demonstrate a proper amount of loyalty and subtlety.

The secret of Glacia is its Silent Civil War.

This is a war without open weapons, a war where no one dies in battle, a war where hatred and fear are covered expertly with machinations, glass ceilings and even love. Because in this war, mothers go up against daughters and sons. Brothers might overtake sisters and Fathers might fall to sons. The civil war that rips Glacia at the heart and creates a chasm doesn’t discriminate by eye color or skin color, not by language or caste. It discriminates by the whim of the darkness and that means children spy on parents, brother against brother, and parents sometimes abandon their own children.

This is the civil war that renders light colored birthright children orphaned with no parent named. This is the civil war that rather than turning families against other families, splits them right down the middle. No one is safe, and everyone lives in fear, because their greatest enemies may be the person sleeping in the next room.

The Religion

When asked, Glacians will always say that the reason for their success is their religion and their strict adherence to it.  Far far more than any other territory, their closeness to the Darkness is what unites the Glacians and increases their egocentrism.

Whereas everywhere else The Darkness and Mother Night are treated as a fact of life, here in Glacia, Mother Night is not some ephemeral shadow of an idea. She is Woman. She is the Mother of Witch and she is Witch at the same time. Mother Night is the Darkness in whose shadow all things grow. Mother Night exists in deep caves, in the Tragic Kingdom, in the visions of Black Widows.  Mother Night is the land and all its people. And she deserves to be worshipped as the Mother that she is.

There are no shrines in the homes of Glacians despite their religiosity.  The Darkness is only ever worshipped in the deep caves found all over Glacia. Some of them are manmade but those that are naturally occurring are even more revered.  It’s here in the depths of these caves that the dark blood rituals of Black Widows take place.  Webs that are woven within caves are said to have more potency.  The most prosperous houses in Glacia have their own dug underground caverns.

The Kaarme mountains are therefore revered in Glacia and border its most important province because of its plentiful caverns dotting the mountainsides.

According to Glacian beliefs the Darkness embraces its chosen children deep into the abyss and grants them dark jewels. The Darkness rejects its less pure children by granting them only light jewels and they must repent for the marks on their souls which grants them only light jewels.

Landens

Glacia is one of the few territories where there are few if any trials between Landens and Blood and this is owed to the Religion of the land. As it is presented to the jeweled children, so it is presented to Landens.  Their understanding becomes that Mother Night loves her creations. Those born without the darkness of certain jewels are to be cared for, Landens particularly.

These landens live separate lives, but not without their own courts. The Landens for the most part are self-governing with a hierarchy placed upon them very long ago by the Queens and Priestesses of Glacia. This hierarchy has its own system of rewards, allowing Landens to live their lives either completely free of Blood interference, or, giving them a chance to drastically improve their standard of living by performing certain tasks for the Blood of the land.  Everyone is allowed to make their own choices and because Landen work is not devalued in Glacia, in favor of Blood handiwork, the Landens have no cause to complain.

The Blood in Glacia takes its position as caretakers of the land and its people incredibly seriously, for this is a decree of The Darkness and must be adhered to as strictly as the Birthright or Blood Ritual.
Spies
The recent ceding of Nharkava under Glacia’s shadow has yielded much opportunity for Glacian landens to improve their lots and standard of living.  One of the requests made of Glacia by Nharkavan Blood has been help with the landen uprisings and rebellions.

Rather than go to war, the Coven and Queens of Glacia deliberated and came up with another idea.  Black Widows all over Virratt weave simple illusion webs, placing them on the landen volunteers and sending them into Nharkava so that they can look like Nharkavans rather than Glacians.  Once across the border in the Nharkavan territory, if they are able to locate or even route out rebel leaders, these Glacian landens are rewarded with fertile land or money with which to support their families.

The Crystal Façade

It is important to note that Glacia holds its secrets incredibly close.  Other territories and their citizens don’t really know the religion of Glacia and unless they make a specific attempt to learn it by incorporating themselves in the culture of Glacia, they cannot hope to understand its intricacies.

In the same way, the Silent Civil War is incredibly quiet and treated with utmost care and subtlety.

What the other territories and people know about Glacia is the perfectly cultivated façade although this façade is just as much part of Glacian culture as are the other aspects discussed here.

Libraries and Education

Glacians are passionate about education and learning.  Grand libraries are owned and cultivated by well to do families both Blood and Landen, rather than the territory courts. Books range subjects depending on the family which owns the library. It is, however, a fully observed tradition in Glacia that once a family reaches a certain level of affluence, their contribution to their community.

Architecture

Glacians pride themselves on their sophistication and chic taste. Their homes are elegant two story marble mansions.  Their gardens are horticultural mazes of frosted pine trees and high hedges. Their homes have very rare fireplaces, more often sporting warming spells that are just warm enough to keep the cold off the bones while keeping the chill on the skin.

Parties

In the tradition of the truly rich,  Glacians find all celebrations and happy occasions cause to celebrate.  Everything is celebrated and in as grand a fashion as families can create the soirees.  There are no such things as children’s parties in Glacia. Parties are all held for adults although children do attend, everyone knowing how to behave according to protocol and societal rules in these parties quite early on.

Court

Court in Glacia does not consist of more than Three circles with each circle having no more than twelve members.  The first circle shall be made up entirely of Dark Jewels.  If that means that the Queen has fewer than twelve members in her First Circle, then that's as may be.

Only Second and Third circles can have light jeweled members although all Light Jeweled Court members consent to opening their inner barriers to the Inner and Outer Triangle on request.  If at any time they do not after making this pact, the repercussions could be their lives.

The Queen's Triangle

All Queens have and require a triangle. In territories outside of Glacia, this means a Master of the Guard, a Steward and a First Escort.  In Glacia, this trio is called the Outside Triangle.

The Inside Triangle is made up of the female castes. Black Widow, Priestess and Healer.  Although there are times that a dual casted Queen takes on one of the sides of the triangle, this is a rare occurance.

The Underground

There is an underground movement in Glacia of LJ's and Blood (and some Landens) to smuggle the light jeweled out of Glacia. It is not that Glacia's borders are closed, but remember that the Light Jewels in Glacia are under deep surveillance. Jewel-less Blood are treated as second class citizens. Therefore whenever a Light Jewel leaves Glacia there is someone who is aware of where they've gone and when they will return. Someone to give chase should they decide not to come back.

As a result, an Underground movement has developed. This is not like the Underground Railroad of American history. Instead, consider the Mexican Border trafficking or people being smuggled out of countries like Morocco or Lybia. These people need money to pay off the smugglers that are willing to take them across mountains, through caves, down rivers.  There are no luxury hotels on these treks, no special houses. These are two to three week journeys made by foot (the winds can't be trusted during an escape) with nothing on your back but your clothes and whatever is in your vanished "cupboard".  There is also, many times, the trouble of creating distractions large enough to hide the running of an LJ.  These quests are led by the most dangerous, the most adventurous and the most ambitious. Because anyone who is caught knows that their life is forfeit.

If you are going to incorporate an escape from Glacia or an attempted escape, please consider all of these obstacles and fill out the story well.

Piste

Piste is a highly technical form of dance first created in Glacia. It is primarily performed accompanied by classical music and special string instruments found within Glacia. The Piste season begins in the winter, around Winsol and lasts through the last weeks of winter. It is a highly prized and expensive form of entertainment.  The aristo and wealthy houses of Glacia can afford to hire some private dancers for an evening's entertainment at a ball or party.  Those who can't afford private entertainment can choose to see the Piste at a theater that hosts a Piste company and its productions.
