Notably excellent posture, standing or sitting.
Toshihiro has marked his advancement in the Martial Arts, and his victories, with traditional Tattoo that is typically only visible when he disrobes, at at the edges of his collar and sleeves.

Personality

Personality:

To the world at large, Toshihiro no Ariake is a man of discipline and skill.  Before his appointment to the Thousand Swords, he was known as a master swordsman, and a senior instructor in Ariake-Ryu.  He seems to be what one would hope for in a Warlord Prince; focused and controlled violence, with enough self-knowledge to keep himself in check.  Toshihiro is known to be far more patient in instruction with children than he is with adults.  As is somewhat expected from a Warlord Prince, he is also known for bursts of violence, typically in the form of traditional duels of honor, some of which have ended in the death of his opponents.  As one of the Commanders of the Thousand Swords, he is known to be firm in the execution of his duties, but surprisingly fair, showing no particular bias, save perhaps a preference for any attempt at manners over crudeness.

Toshihiro would not say it, but he is something of an iconoclast, albet a patient one.  He wishes to see change in Tacea, and has actively worked to be the change that he wants to see.  His own literacy is not complete, though he intends to learn more, and hopefully trickle that learning down to the right subordinates.  While he appreciates and even loves the tradition and culture of Tacea, he also sees where those traditions have failed Tacea as a whole, and the Male part of it in particular.  With the rise if Seung Corro, there is a real opportunity to change the course of the Territory, and he means to be at the front of that effort.  He feels that it is the best way to honor the intentions of his Mother, who saw in him a talented swordsman that would be stunted by a lack of access to the feminine records of the Ariake Rye system of Martial Arts.  it was a gift that he can think to repay in only one fashion.

Those that know Toshihiro well know that his discipline is also applied to his rebellious views.  He does not sing out his rebellion to the heavens, where anyone can hear, but rather picks and chooses his battles well.  By doing so, he gathers allies and sympathizers to his cause, and allows the egalitarian movement to build strength quietly, rather than simply lighting fires everywhere that would be summarily put out.  Because of this approach, he is sometimes seen as eccentric, rather than entirely rebellious.  In truth, Toshihiro’s discipline and focus cage a fiery spirit that writes elegantly in the Male Cipher of the struggle all men must engage in for equality, urging Males to show their quality, and by good deeds, demand their due.  After all, with Males, Tacea would not be where it was today, and possibly, not be at all.

Likes:
  • 1 Literacy; A new world opened to him when his Mother began to teach him anything beyond the Male Cipher.  Knowing how to read a thing is a far cry from writing it, and he knows that his grasp is not perfect.  He believes he would do well with other martial works, but what of poetry or philosophy or even history not generally available to Males?  Perhaps it is true that forbidden fruit is the sweetest, because Toshihiro certainly means to learn more.
  • 2 Martial Arts; Ariake Martial Arts, of course, has been the focus of a lifetime of study, but outside of the immediate needs of the duel or the battlefield, he has an interest in all martial arts.  He had no talent for the spear, for example, but he enjoys seeing an expert handle the weapon, and while he may have enemies in other clans, this does not prevent him from appreciating the artistry and intent behind a Shingetsu Archer, for example.
  • 3 Poetry; He is terrible at it, though he tries.  He appreciates well written or clever words, though depending on the source, he must hide it from time to time.  Occasionally, he can be caught penning his own haiku, usually in the Male Cipher, before destroying it in dissatisfaction.  More occasionally, if he’s feeling good about his effort, he’ll share it with a friend.

    Dislikes:
  • 1 Adherence to “Bad” Tradition; Toshihiro loves his culture and the history of his Clan and his Territory, this does not mean he does not see problems within it.  The reduction of Males in society among those traditions, seems wasteful to him, and counter-intuitive, for one example.  He has no issue with traditions that work and stand as guideposts for what makes this Territory Tacea as opposed to any other mainland culture, but where tradition does not work, then people should consider improving on it, or making new traditions that do.
  • 2 Condescension; Toshihiro will swallow his pride on many occasions, especially where it reflects on his Family and his Clan, but this does not mean he appreciates someone leveraging their social status, Female or Male, against him in an effort to bolster their perceived superiority.  This has, in his younger days, occasionally led to duels, wherein attitudes have been corrected, or ended.
  • 3 The Letter of the Law (as opposed to the Spirit); Law Enforcement sounds far more simple than it really is.  Every situation is different and comes accompanied with its own nuance.  Should laws apply to everyone?  Absolutely, however it should be understood that not every situation is neatly and tidily handled by the letter of the law.  Should a boy that steals food because he’s starving be treated the same as a thug that steals just because he can?  Toshihiro would say No, not everyone feels the same.
Fears:
  • 1 Death before Equality; Toshihiro has been making a slow effort to display both the ability of Males, as well as establish the senseless inequality in Tacean tradition.  With Seung Corro in power, there is ample opportunity to drive this point home, but there is also the chance that he would be put to death for the effort, before he can even be a useful martyr for the cause.
  • 2 Exile; Toshihiro understands all too well that he already bucks tradition.  His Mother loved him enough to raise him up believing in his own worth, above and beyond what would normally have been expected.  He knows that he will, at some point, be seen as an iconoclast, and possibly too risky, too untouchable to remain part of the Ariake.  Without the support of his reputation or his Clan, he would not be able to affect change.
  • 3 Always Someone Better; Toshihiro has the reputation of a swordsman and noted duelist.  Challenges are to be expected, and are simply a part of life.  Every duel leads him to question, is this the one that is better than him?  Is this the one that puts an end to his life, or worse, his honor and reputation.
Craft Strengths:
  • 1 Ariake Ancestral Blade Empowerment; Toshihiro has specialized in enhancing and improving any blade he can hold in his hand, however, this is best and most effective with his ancestral blade in hand.  Enhanced, the blade is unbreakable by normal means, and can cleave through standard materials with only a little resistance.  Enhanced to the level of his Sapphire, and the sword and cut through Craft made shields and barriers, and, in the absence of Craft, shear through flesh and bone as though it were water.  This is not to say it immediately breaks through such Craft wrought barriers, only that it can; the enhanced blade can damage a Red barrier, and success will vary as the Jewels of the shield become lighter.  Without a masterwork and Craft-bound blade, Toshihiro cannot wield this Craft to the fullest, the blade itself would be too weak to handle it.
  • 2 Ariake-Ryu Combat Craft; Armed, or unarmed, Toshihiro has dedicated much of his life to mastering the Clan’s Martial Arts.  Typically, this would have been limited to what some might have considered traditionally “Male” techniques, but thanks to a Mother that thought better of him than tradition demanded, he learned a great deal more.  Circular, and focused on the efficient combination of craft and physical combat arts, the focus of the style is to counter an attack, be it armed or unarmed, delivering a telling blow either with a spear, a blade, or one’s hand or feet.  Less aggressive, at least in its appearance, Ariake-Ryu internalizes and redirects energy until one can land a brutally efficient mortal or crushing blow.
Craft Weaknesses:
  • 1 Shielding Others; Toshihiro has spent so much of his focus on personal combat, that he cannot extend shields or combat shields beyond himself.  He can protect himself, though even those shields are either brief or lie close to his skin.  Nor can he simply shield himself, from the rain for example, it simply was a matter ohis focus; shields were for personal combat and defense, and that was about it.
  • 2 Power Bolts; Toshihiro did not practice for long-distance combat, at least not with this form of Craft, which is obviously effective.  He prefers to get in close, and make the kill as personal as possible, to honor the life he is taking.  He cannot hurl them, nor add them to his combat repertoire, for lack of practice and use.
Life Story

History:

Toshihiro was born to be a swordsman, or so it seemed to him once he was old enough to hold a sword and a spear, but more on that later.  The man that would one day be called “Sensei” by brothers, sisters, and cousins alike, was born to the noble clan of Ariake.  His Mother, Yuriko, was the epitome of femininity and strength, a swordswoman entrusted with an ancestral blade.  Her lineage wound back for centuries in the Clan.  His Father, Hideo, was a steady Warlord that had earned honor for himself among the Ariake, a highly respected retainer whose blood was a touch too thin for him to claim the Clan as his own.  He was a traditional Ariake Spearman, and an exemplar of the Ariake-Ryu system, which had been his path to recognition amongst his cousins.  Toshihiro’s Mother, a Witch, enjoyed the recognition status due to her because of her Jewels, the purity of her Ariake lineage, and the possession and skill with which she wielded a Craft-blessed blade..  The two met undertaking a settlement with Landen upon Ariake lands, and many were surprised by their engagement.  The two were cousins, albeit from different branches of the Family Tree, and perhaps that was the eugenic secret to their success.  Toshihiro is the eldest of four children.

Born a Warlord Prince, his Father knew that they would need an outlet for his son’s natural aggression and warrior instinct.  Thankfully, his own martial studies would help to provide that for his Son, and a foundation that would carry Toshihiro through the rest of his life.  There was only one surprise along this path.  When his Father put a spear in his hand, the young Toshihiro could not find the rhythm of it.  Training began before his Birthright, and boys his age trained side by side, but for Toshihiro it was clear that he was not keeping up.  He fared better with his hands empty than with the spear.  On a whim, his Mother attended the day’s martial lessons, and pulled him aside to give him rudimentary instruction with the sword, and suddenly it was a brand new day for the young Warlord Prince.  From that day on, when spears were a part of the lessons, he trained with his Mother.  From the moment he first held a blade, even the small wooden boken that he began with, Toshihiro felt like he had discovered his calling; the sword.  It became his earliest focus, and his earliest source of achievement.

Formalized systems of Martial Arts, such as Ariake-Ryu, were often written down to preserve both their philosophies and their concepts.  The Ariake Clan were no exception.  They had charts, diagrams, formal discussions and even watercolor paintings detailing stances and footwork.  They were worthy of study, and several were even available in the Men’s Cipher, but the best of them were reserved for the matriarchs of the Clan, the truly literate.  Yuriko saw such promise in her son, and felt that he was being limited by tradition rather than necessity.  She sat upon this dilemma until Toshihiro’s Birthright, a strong Opal, and decided that night that literacy would not limit her son, not when he showed so much talent for the sword.  Toshi’s training continued with his Father, and the other Ariake Males, but he continued to train with the sword with his Mother, and some of those lessons involved learning to read more than just the Male Cipher.  Even at such a young age, Toshihiro was made to understand that his Mother was risking her reputation and standing in the Clan with these secret lessons.

Toshihiro kept his silence, but it planted a seed of rebellion in him that slowly grew.  Not against his family, he would not risk their place or reputation, but against traditions that created not only division between Male and Female, but that oppressed Males and kept them from attaining higher learning, higher skills, and even a higher standing in society.  Toshihiro dedicated himself to his training.  He was determined not only to excel, but to be ultimately responsible for training other Males of his Clan.  If he could be better than his Father, or the others that trained him, then those that he trained would in turn surpass their teacher, and Ariake-Ryu would grow and improve.  Toshihiro continued to improve, though he never bothered to learn the spear, with the sword and empty hands, he showed great promise.  It was his Mother’s prohibited lessons that let him stand ahead of so many others.  Hideo could see that Toshihiro’s practice matches were becoming increasingly intense.  By necessity, true sparring was violent, and could absolutely result in injury, but his son came close to killing another student on three separate occasions.

Maturity and the Rut were upon the young Warlord Prince, and he had to be taught how to control himself.  The discipline of his training proved an excellent foundation for self control, but some calls had to be answered.  A woman of particular expertise educated young Toshihiro at the Red Moon House, and he has been a patron of that house ever since.  Training helped assuage his need for violence, but in time, he found himself involved in the real thing, whether it was duels from within or out of the Clan, or skirmishes engaged by the Ariake.  Toshihiro continued to train and perfect his swordwork, learning the Craft of the Ariake, even as his Mother continued to expose him to secrets typically reserved for the female warriors of the Clan.  Before he undertook his Offering, he had a hand full of duels and earned a dangerous reputation thanks to a string of victories, only two of which were fatal to the challengers.  When he came away from his Offering with the Sapphire, decisions had to be made regarding how best to keep Toshihiro in service to the Ariake.

As his skills and reputation grew, the answer became apparent.  They put him to use, co-leading a guard, along with his own Mother, to help police Ariake holdings in the wake of eruptions and refugees from Hanwa and Tang flooding their lands and ultimately draining their resources.  It was believed that Mother and Son together, both people of honor and Yuriko a known Kengou, would have the right sort of reputation and perspective to handle this task, to be both strong protectors, but also stern keepers of the Ariake’s wealth.  Together, they were successful, but Toshihiro became increasingly aware of the glass ceiling over his head.  His Mother had the command, not him, and while he had yet to surpass his teacher, he knew that he was not far from it.  His advancement had been slowed down by both learning to read, and learning the Ariake-Ryu perspective on the sword.  His Mother sensed his frustration, and began to prepare him for command by leaving more of those duties to him, once again quietly, albeit with subtlety, bucking the tradition of the land.  Toshihiro prospered with a command, and would have remained at this posting, save that tragedy struck.

Yuriko no Ariake perished due to wounds inflicted in a duel with a member of the Izayoi Clan.  Her wishes were to pass the ancestral blade of her line to Toshihiro, as she had no daughters and her last will and testament made clear that Toshihiro was worthy of the title Kengou.  He inherited his Mother’s blade, and spent a year in retreat with it.  It was out of respect for his Mother that he did this, as alone in retreat, he could read the documents she left for him.  Books and scrolls that should have remained a mystery to him, but were not.  Toshihiro returned to teach younger Males of his Clan, and slowly, he began to display skills that only a few Females of the Clan would recognize as having been preserved in a higher language than the simple Male Cipher.  Due to the fact that his classes were not widely attended by anything but other Males, including his Father, who took over where the spear was concerned, Martial Females did not catch on to the fact that Toshihiro must have come by his knowledge in culturally proscribed fashion.  By the time questions began to circulate, everything changed in Tacea.  There was no more Queen, and Seung Corro rose to power in the vacuum left behind.

A Male claimed the Regency, and that was all Toshihiro needed to know.  When Prince Corro formed the Territory Guard, and The Ariake had to partake, Toshihiro publicly volunteered.  He took his ancestral blade and his experience with him, and was appointed as the Co-Commander of the Territory Guard.  Once secure in this position, he began to be more vocal about his belief in literacy for men, and the betterment of Males not only of the Ariake Clan, but as a whole.  Toshihiro believed that men had been a squandered resource in Tacea, nd with the borders opened if they meant to keep up, that would have to be remedied.  New traditions would have to be made.  He used himself as an example, and argued honorably for his viewpoint, avoiding violence as often as possible, but never backing down from his viewpoint.  His Mother had risked her name to be sure he got ahead in the world, he would honor her and his Father, by using the education she should not have given him to educate others even as he protected them.

Toshihiro eyed the little scrap of paper he had written on, and sighed.  He was not sure of it.  It fit the proper form, perfectly, that was always the challenge using this form, but he was not at all positive about the message.  It was simply the nervously expressed thoughts of a man about to meet his death.  That was how the Kengou viewed every duel, and every engagement, with the expectation of death.  Did it make him afraid?  Absolutely, but the test was in whether or not he allowed fear to control his actions.  Would he face his fear?  Or would he avoid it?  Toshihiro no Ariake had made a career of facing his fears, but despite that, he still had them.  No matter how many duels, no matter how many battles, his belly still churned and his heart still pounded.  The Sapphire Warlord Prince vanished the scrap of paper, Male Cipher or not, he did not need it to be found by the amateur critics that surrounded him.

There was a polite rap at the framework of his office door.  He rose, and slid the watercolor panel to the right.  A young man informed him that it was time.  Toshihiro nodded, and took him his ancestral blade, sliding it through the obi sash at his waist.  He went out into the garden, and stood at end of a perfect square whose sand had been swept into meditative pattern.  It was not Toshihiro’s work, he had enough artforms with which to struggle.  It was a wise old gardener’s work, a man that had been with the family since Toshihiro had been a child.  It was also the perfect place for a duel.  There would be blood, and the old man would work it in, and swirl it under, remaking his perfect pattern.  Toshihiro regretted the necessity, but better blood in the white sand, than on the flagstones or the well worn boards of the teahouse.

The Kengou gazed across at his opponent, and gave a respectful bow.  His opponent returned one in kind.  They stepped out onto the sand and faced each other.  No words were exchanged.  Each man had one hand at the top of the scabbard of their sword, and a free hand ready to draw.  Toshihiro was so focused on the moment, he scarcely remembered the insult or reason for this duel.  They stood ready for some time, each man staring at the other, each man gazing into the other’s eyes.  The swordsmaster of the Ariake remained calm, upon the brow of his opponent, beads of perspiration began to form.  The moment swelled with purpose, and then suddenly, Toshihiro’s opponent stepped back, and bowed.  The act declared Toshihiro both his better and the victor, all without the need for spilling blood.  The Sapphire Warlord Prince returned the bow, and as the victor, stood his ground as the man and his entourage quietly departed.  He was not sure how he felt about this victory, but his blade had not been drawn, and so it’s thirst for blood had neither been engaged no denied.

Toshihiro eyed the garden.  The sand was still in ruins, however.
