Personality

Personality:
Tae Yeon is whip-smart, for all that his circumstances have contrived to keep him uneducated. He is perceptive of details, skilled at thinking visually, and quick to draw connections and figure out solutions for problems. He excels at puzzles and numeracy and memory games, and is proud of every piece of knowledge he manages to acquire. In another time and place he would have been a scholar - in this one, he is prolific at journaling in sosho, and an eager student of Xiong's efforts to teach him to read and write in Common.

Tae Yeon has a place in his heart for everything from broken-winged birds to broken-hearted people - the more in need of his help, the better. He has a protective, paternal streak honed first on his younger sister, shielding her from their older brothers' teasing, and then on his Queen, though he runs the risk of becoming patronizing. He likes to show his intelligence and expects others to do the same, but is loath to explain himself or give answers he doesn't feel have been earned. Either keep up, ask good questions, or keep your mouth shut.

He has always had something of a strange moral compass, being more focused on the ends than the means. Tae is willing to take risks, cross boundaries, and defy convention if it means accomplishing his goals. Any squeamishness was burned out of him on the fishing boats, long before he went to serve at Xiong's side: he serves his Queen with unflinching loyalty.

Likes:
  • 1  - The Sea Tae Yeon comes from a long line of fishers, and his ancestral lands comprised a narrow strip of land that ran along the ocean. He learned to swim at the same time he learned to walk, and has spent his whole life around the water - wading, working, out on boats... He finds being near the sea calming, and is happiest when he can smell salt and hear the waves.
  • 2 - Xiong Teng Tae Yeon has stood by his Queen's side for several years now, and he is singularly devoted to her. He considers himself lucky to have found his bonded while they are both young and able to enjoy each other's company for many years to come, and though his service to Xiong has taken him far from his home and native land, he feels strongly positive about the changes she has brought to his life.
  • 3 - The Interregnum After the upheaval of the past two years, Tae is optimistic about the Interregnum and the opportunities for change that it presents. As escort to a Queen outside the major clans, he sees the suspension of power as an opportunity for Xiong to improve her station, while as a male, he sees the rule of the Dragon Father as a sign of possible things to come.

    Dislikes:
  • 1 - Being Treated like he's Stupid Tae Yeon is functionally illiterate in common, coming as he does from a very traditional family. However, he is quick to point out that that doesn't make him a moron. He hates to be talked down to, and strives to assert his intelligence as best he can.
  • 2 - Mainland Taceans Tae Yeon spent his whole adolescence in Kaesong and his adulthood in Zhong, but his position at Xiong's side has given him ample opportunity to interact with mainlanders. He finds them disrespectful and dislikes their generally dismissive and condescending attitudes toward the Hanwa and the Tang, and believes that generations of policy have been made with the great clans' best interests in mind but no heed paid to everyone else. In Tae Yeon's opinion, one of the best possible ends for the interregnum is for a ruler from outside the great clans to take the Dragon Throne.
  • 3 - Healers Tae Yeon has always been a bit wary of Healers and how they seem to preside over life and death. He doesn't believe that their craft is so sacred that only those born into their caste (or the lucky few selected for training) should be allowed to learn it. However, lately this dislike has narrowed to ONE SPECIFIC HEALER IN PARTICULAR - the one who is, in his view, keeping Xiong trapped at Black Immortal. Though Tae doesn't doubt his Queen was injured once, he is certain she recovered long ago, and their benefactor is refusing to release her for sinister reasons.

    Fears:
  • 1 - Having Permanently Injured his Queen Xiong is stubborn to a fault. During the twin eruptions of Mt. Mago and Mt. Itoko, she refused to leave Zhong while she still saw potential to help. Tae Yeon was more pragmatic about the situation and made certain to transport them to safety, but in order to do so, he had to knock his Queen unconscious. Upon their arrival at Black Immortal, it quickly became clear that she had suffered some neurological injury in their flight. Though Tae Yeon is glad that she is alive, her long convalescence has him concerned that his actions, though life-saving, have caused permanent damage to the woman he loves.
  • 2 - Xiong Teng Falling in Love with Someone Else Tae Yeon was not Xiong's first bonded male, but he was the first from outside her family, and he holds that relationship as sacred. Though things between them have never turned romantic or sexual, there has always been a tension - a potential for something greater. He is sure that, given the right opportunity, they will one day be together... as long as no one else comes along and wins his Queen's heart first.
  • 3 - The Hanwa's Uncertain Future Though Tae Yeon has lived among the Tang for several years, he has never forgotten the island or people of his birth. What little news reaches Black Immortal has given him a dismal portrait of the Hanwa's present state - their greatly-diminished numbers, their threatened traditions, their sunken homeland. As he cannot leave his Queen's side, Tae Yeon has no way of knowing the truth to these reports - and he dreads the possibility that things may be even more dire, and that the worst may still be yet to come.

    Craft Strengths:
  • 1 - Winds Navigation Before he even learned basic craft, Tae Yeon had an instinctive understanding of ocean currents and how to navigate the difficult waters around his family's home. As soon as he received his Birthright jewel, he began extending this intuition to the Winds that swirled around Kaesong's rocky southern coast. Through years of practice, he has grown skilled at pulling himself and others (provided they are willing and he can keep a good hold on them) through the Winds to arrive safely at their destination.
  • 2 - Contracts Though illiterate in common, Tae Yeon is talented at crafting binding agreements using glyphs and sosho. His elaborate seals, drawn in ink or blood, are works of art in their own right - as well as a surefire way to make someone keep their word.

    Craft Weaknesses:
  • 1 - Diplomacy Tae Yeon has neither the personality not the patience required for diplomacy craft, despite his caste. He is better off not attempting it at all and attempting to get what he wants by non-magical means.
  • 2 - Defensive Shielding Tae Yeon is slow on the draw when it comes to casting defensive shields, and has difficulty making them as strong as they ought to be and maintaining them against damage.

Ji Yeon Yang, Rose to Opal Priestess, b. 161 AP, deceased 191 AP.

    History:

Tae Yeon is the second youngest out of five, the last son before a long-awaited daughter. He comes from a long line of fishers - his father oversaw the family's small fleet of fishing boats, and his mother managed business operations. As the only brother to wear a caste, Tae Yeon was given training in numeracy and arithmetic so that he could one day help his sister in running the business, but his formal education ended there. The family was, on the whole, very traditional, and did not see fit to teach any of their sons to read Common.

Tae Yeon came of age working in the family business and never set his sights beyond his family's ancestral land. However, in 187 AP, he accompanied his mother and brothers to work out a fishing rights dispute with their Tang neighbors from across the channel. He bonded hard and fast to the presiding Queen - a young woman named Xiong Teng - and made the decision to remain in Zhong and serve by her side after his family returned home. The decision drove a wedge between Tae Yeon and his brothers, though his younger sister made an effort to keep in touch - her caste meant she'd been given some training, and understood the importance of the bond between Queen and male. She could forgive his abandonment, even if the rest of the family could not.

Over the next five years, Tae Yeon stood loyally at his Queen's side, and his initial infatuation with her turned gradually to something more complex. He was never able to put words to his feelings, fearing they might not be reciprocated, or that speaking them out loud might destroy their friendship. When the time came for Xiong to take the throng in East Zhong, Tae Yeon was formally promoted to the position of first escort.

This lasted all of six months before Mt. Mago erupted. Xiong, in her royal selflessness, was determined to stay and see her people to safety, despite Tae Yeon's protests about the growing danger. As the ash grew thicker, pragmatism and desperation set in, and Tae Yeon resorted to knocking his Queen unconscious with a blow to the head and hauling her into the winds. He took her first to Kaesong, where he thought they would be safe, and would have been if not for the near-immediate eruption of Mt. Itoko. Diving into the winds once more, Tae Yeon took Xiong to an island near Black Immortal, where they sought refuge at a convent.

Xiong was slow to wake, and when she did, it soon became clear that she'd suffered a serious injury in their flight. She complained of blurry vision, weakness, and worsening headaches - and all the while, Tae Yeon fretted that her decline was his fault, all caused by the actions he took to save her from the volcanic ash. Though a Healer was able to identify the problem and repair it, the damage was done - and Tae Yeon's guilt remained.

In the months that have followed, Tae Yeon has grown anxious to take Xiong away from Black Immortal, though he knows her recovery is still a work in progress. Part of him agrees with the Healer that she is in no condition to travel - but he has also begun to suspect that, the people of Black Immortal, craving a Queen to gift the land, have conspired to slow Xiong's convalescence and keep her captive.

    Character in Play:

Tae Yeon had not yet seen his Queen that morning. He’d been waiting with their usual breakfast in their usual spot for so unusual an amount of time that the tea had gone cold. If not for the monastery’s utterly mundane sense of calm, he would have worried - but were there an emergency, Lady Wakano would have at least three assistants running through the halls. He would have been notified.

But… it was not like his Queen to oversleep.

Tae closed his eyes, blocking out the view of the little porch and the water beyond. He found Xiong’s psychic scent in one of the little meeting rooms off the main entrance, accompanied by someone he… didn’t recognize. No one on the island wore that combination of jewels.

Everything alright, Xiong? he asked her, opening one eye and swatting at a seagull that had strayed too close to the porridge.

Just fine, she answered, after a moment. There’s a woman from the territory court here.

The seagull came back, and Tae shooed it away again.

Will you be joining me for breakfast? he asked. The water is beautiful today.

He could nearly hear Xiong’s sigh across their thread. Don’t go hungry on my behalf, she said. The seagull was back. Tae frowned and swiped at it again, and this time it snapped back at him, going after his fingers with its curved beak. When he drew his hand away, the bird, emboldened, made a move for one of the berries.

Tae snapped his fingers, scooping the bird up in a web of his Purple Dusk that tightened and tightened and tightened with a cracking of bones and a rustling of feathers until it resembled nothing so much as a particularly feathery marble that he flicked into the water.

I’ll keep the tea warm, he thought, wrapping a warming spell around the base of the pot. Don’t be long.
