Distinguishing Features:

Sakura is a tall woman, standing at five-foot-eight. Dark hair with traces of brown. Cheekbones sharp enough to cut glass.

Personality

Personality:

Sakura’s life is built upon the need to present a polished appearance and clean reputation. Disputes are handled privately and she does not engage in rumors or gossip outside of her trusted circle. She demands the best of her people and even more from herself. This combination of obsession with her personal presentation, her mother’s domineering attitude, and the depth of her Jewels combines to form a Queen who is preoccupied with control and power in all of its forms. It is her right and duty to take every bit of power and status possible in order to protect herself and her clan from the other "Great Clans" of Tacea. She is both sword and shield to her people and Sakura must seize all advantages to protect the people who also protect her in turn. She is ready to bend the world to her will by any means necessary. She must be the most powerful, the most deadly, and the best-prepared Queen in Tacea, because anything less means the end of Clan Shingetsu.

It’s no wonder, then, that she demands the best that life offers. Only a Queen can endure power in its purest form. Her blood feeds the land that feeds her people. Beyond those, rulership and service are the greatest gifts that she can give. She doesn't apologize for her ambition and she will not lessen it to make others feel safe. Takara constantly demands that she reconsider it, but Sakura knows that everything she needs will only come to her if she takes it from the grasping fingers of others. Between her iron will and the strength of her Jewel rank, there is nothing that can ever be denied to her if she desires it enough. As she prospers, so does Clan Shingetsu.

Sakura loves her family, but they are her responsibility as much as they are her blood. They’ve enjoyed freedom and control over their own lives that she does not know, for all of the control she attempts to keep over her own life. Her brothers serve and that is good. Kiyoko is a successful businesswoman who plays by her own rules and that has created a distance between them. The distance between herself and Kiyoko is the one that bothers her most, as Sakura knows her mother’s focus on her arose because she could not shape Kiyoko as she wanted. She respects Kiyoko as her elder sister and cares about her well-being, but her lack of conformity has been both an envy and annoyance to the young Queen.

Sakura’s duty as healer and keeper of the land is more than just an urge or an obsession. It’s a whisper in her head that becomes a scream that blasts away every other thought if she attempts to ignore it. She can feel the itch in her skin when she hasn’t bled into the land for more than a couple of days. When she calls to the earth beneath her feet, it does not merely answer her back. It shows her what it needs and what is wrong without cease. This occurs at all hours of the day and night, dulling and climaxing based upon her mood and the time since she last gifted the land with her vitae.

Sakura’s fear of another civil war is slowly losing ground to the desire to silence her clan’s enemies in combat. Her mentor warned her against avenging slights through personal combat, for warfare scars everyone. She's never killed anyone, but she believes that she could, if necessary. Sakura respects her elders and Takara’s efforts to protect the clan. But when does turning the other cheek become cowardice? She struggles with her need to be respected and her desire to be feared, wondering if it’s possible to balance the two. These questions keep her up at night, wishing that she was able to find the answer like her arrows find their targets.

Should the other clans choose to underestimate her, however, Sakura will see that they pay for their folly.

Likes:

  • 1. A Polished Appearance: Sakura enjoys the finer things in life, whether it’s a good meal, good wine, or even quality robes from a master tailor. Appearance is a large part of presentation, communicating one's stature and power before words are ever spoken. Sakura ensures that her appearance is as complete as possible in order to make a good first impression.

  • 2. Feeding the Earth: The land calls out to her at all times. Sakura loves the ceremony and solemn purpose inherent in opening her veins to the give to the land. She feels closest to Mother Night and most in touch with her caste during these moments,  whether it’s on large tract of farmland or among the plants in her lush garden.

  • 3. Archery: Archery speaks to the martial side of Sakura’s nature. Archery unifies the mind, body, and soul, and Sakura enjoys the peace and visible measurement of her talents that archery provides. Her bow was a gift from Takara during her training and Sakura enjoys it as much for the bond it established between them as she does for its strength and stopping power.

    Dislikes:

  • 1. Her Mother: Aiko no Shingetsu has doted upon her since the day she was born. Sakura is grateful that her mother gave her life, but she doesn’t enjoy her company. Aiko constantly offers and advice and suggestions on Sakura’s presentation of herself, even when she isn’t asked. Aiko is also the reason for the distance between Sakura and her siblings. She knows that Aiko takes great pride in her, but it feels like her mother is reliving her life through her and it rankles her.

  • 2. Clan Izayoi: This group of self-righteous fools are the bane of her existence. They poke and prod her clan, accusing them of everything wrong under the sun. Now they have the gall to accuse Clan Shingetsu of arranging for Ishiyo’s madness. Takara refused to answer their slander. Sakura finds it difficult to hold her tongue, especially now that the Interregnum has kept the Shingetsu from reaching the Dragon Throne.

  • 3. Seung Corro: A male sits on the Dragon Throne and interrupts the Great Cycle. Even if Seung Corro honors his word, he has set a precedent that can be exploited. Males will now believe that they, too, can be a “Dragon Father”, which is an unacceptable situation in Sakura's mind.  Hinata no Kagen’s support of this is also baffling. It doesn’t matter if he’s five-thousand years old.

    He. Has. No. Right.

    Fears:

  • 1. Civil War: Early on, Takara impressed upon Sakura that another civil war must be averted at all costs. Takara’s warning colors Sakura’s judgements now that the young Queen sits the throne. But the Izayoi slander her clan and threaten war if the Shingetsu take the throne. Sakura fears that Tacea will unite against the her clan to wipe them out. Yet what choice does she have when it seems that everyone is attempting to displace Clan Shingetsu in the cycle of rulership?

  • 2. Tarnishing Takara’s Legacy: Takara led the Shingetsu well for decades, bringing the clan through the War of Dragons. The elder Queen imparted lessons and wisdom that Sakura heeds even now. She must tread carefully, lest she damage her mentor's reputation and destroy her own credibility.

  • 3. Kiyoko’s Hatred: Sakura’s heard the stories of her older sister’s birth. Mother doted on her and they were close for a time. Then Sakura came along and Aiko shifted her focus to raising the young Queen. The unspoken thread running through those stories is that Kiyoko chose her path in response to Aiko choosing Sakura over her. Sakura doesn’t know if this is true or not. She and Kiyoko have never been antagonistic to each other, but they also have never been truly close, either. It would wound her to know that Kiyoko hates her, but it would be worse if she learned that her sister felt nothing at all.

    Craft Strengths:

  • 1. Queen’s Gift: Sakura’s Gift feeds several miles of land in a single offering, replenishing the soil to make crops as hearty as possible. This allows her to focus on troubled areas directly while still assisting those areas that she does not visit as often.

  • 2. Leaf on the Wind (Shingetsu Lightness Craft):  Like the cherry blossoms she is named for, Sakura’s skill in her clan’s signature craft allows her to alter her personal gravity and control the rate at which she falls from on high. She can also make seemingly impossible leaps without concentration, allowing her to cover more ground or fire her arrows while in motion.

    Craft Weaknesses:

  • 1. Telekinetic Craft: Telekinesis drains Sakura’s jewels at a rapid rate. Even moving an object across a room gives her a mild headache and requires her all of her concentration to make sure that it doesn’t just drop halfway across the room before she can reach for it.

  • 2. Mind Delving: While Sakura is capable of Mind Delving, she has never learned how to make it a one-way transaction. When she parts a barrier in another person's mind, that person can open the same barrier in her mind. Sakura learned about this during an intimate moment in her life and it has scared her away from doing so ever since.

    History:

Aiko no Shingetsu gave birth to her second daughter, Sakura, four years after the arrival of her daughter, Kiyoko. Sakura was the fifth child born to Shou and Aiko, but as soon as the girl’s caste manifested, Aiko turned the her full focus to shaping the young Queen. She doted upon Sakura, giving her practically anything she wanted when she demanded it, and ensuring that the rest of her siblings followed suit. Aiko also pushed Sakura harder than her other children, forcing the young girl to be mindful of her actions and words at all times. Aiko expected Sakura to rule a District, or even the whole of Clan Shingetsu when she came of age. Combined with her siblings, their branch of the family could guide the clan for generations. When Sakura obtained the Purple Dusk at her Birthright Ceremony, Aiko’s pride was worth the fatigue and worry Sakura felt and she desired to keep the older woman happy.

Takara no Shingetsu, ruler of Clan Shingetsu, offered to mentor the young Queen and took her on as a Ward of the Court. Takara had lived through the War of the Dragons and feared the possibility of the clans going to war once more. She impressed upon Sakura that Tacea would not, survive another round of the conflict. When Clan Izayoi began to slander the Shingetsu for its economic prosperity, insinuating that it was not achieved by legal means, Takara demanded that the Shingetsu avoid engagement or retaliation. The Blood were proud and deadly creatures, she explained to Sakura, and all it would take was the wrong action at the wrong time to spark a war. Let others speak and reveal their ignorance. A clean reputation was worth far more (and lasted longer) than avenging a slight.

Sakura obtained the Sapphire at her Offering ceremony. Her deep well of strength pleased her mother and matched that Kiyoko’s. If Sakura thought that this would bring her closer to her older sister, she was wrong. While she and Kiyoko respected each other, they did not share a close bond. Instead of sulking, Sakura has made acquaintances with her peers from the other great clans of Tacea. Her mother’s example (and influence) has pushed Sakura into taking greater interest in the temples and their efforts to care for abandoned males within the Territory. These temples require food and money to feed their residents and the youths they shelter. Sakura has used her Gift to help cultivate the land and increase the yields to feed as many people as possible.

Ishiyo no Izayoi’s ascendance as Dragon Mother was distasteful to Sakura, for Ishiyo held a deep-seated bias against Clan Shingetsu. Her rule would only encourage the Izayoi’s slander against her clan. And then, as suddenly as it began, Ishiyo’s rule was over. The stories of the Dragon Mother slaughtering her Daggers and her clan were horrifying. When the Izayoi laid blame for the act on Clan Shingetsu, Sakura was furious. When she went to ask Takara how they would handle it, the elder Queen refused to see her. Shortly thereafter, Takara called Sakura to a private meeting and explained that she needed to go to Ito immediately. She did not give a reason, but said that she would explain everything upon her return.

That was the last time Sakura saw Takara no Shingetsu. The elder Queen was attacked by parties unknown on her way to meet with elders of the other clans. When word reached Sakura, the young Queen suspected foul play. She stepped forward to lead Clan Shingetsu as Takara’s heir, but finds herself in charge of a clan that is tired of being attacked. The Izayoi's belligerence doesn't help matters, but they continue to suggest that Clan Shingetsu has committed treason.

The Interregnum is an insult to the Shingetsu, but Sakura must use this chance to clear her clan of wrongdoing. If she can find the truth, then she can shame the Izayoi and silence their detractors once and for all.

But if the Shingetsu are somehow responsible for Ishiyo no Izayoi’s fall, Sakura is terrified that the other clans will march against them, determined to wipe them out.

    Character in Play:

What do you mean, 'she's dead'? ” Sakura asked, glaring at Hideko no Shingetsu, acting Master of the Guard for Clan Shingetsu. Hideko and Sakura were second-cousins and close friends, but friendship was the furthest thing from Sakura’s mind right now. The Shingetsu Keep had been under complete lockdown for several hours. The office of Takara no Shingetsu, leader of the Shingetsu and Sakura's mentor, was starting to feel more like a tomb than an office. Hideko arrived twenty minutes ago to deliver the news of Takara's death, shocking the young Queen into silence.

When Takara received a letter from Hinata no Kagen, former Dragon Mother of Tacea, she’d departed early that day with barely a word to Sakura except to leave her in control of the court until her return. The day had been quiet until Hideko’s arrival, about an hour before evening meal.

I should have known it wouldn’t last.

Lady Takara’s delegation was ambushed on the road to Ito. A few of the elders have taken shelter at a village court and are preparing to make the rest of the journey--

Is there any chance that she’s alive?” Sakura demanded, cutting her off. Hideko didn’t deserve that, but ruffled feathers could be smoothed later. Sakura needed information. She had to think and ask the questions that Takara would ask.

Hideko shook her head. “My condolences, Lady Sakura, but no. She died in the initial attack.

Sakura leaned back in the chair, struggling to process it all. Another survivor of the Warring Dragons period was gone. With Ishiyo no Izayoi deposed and in the wind, that left Hinata no Kagen as the the remaining survivor. First, Ishiyo no Izayoi had decimated her court and her clan. Now, Takara was dead. She needed more time to think, but Hideko was watching her.

Do we know who is responsible?” Sakura asked.

We don’t have confirmation. Anzu is still scouting the area.

Hideko. Who did this?” Sakura asked.

All signs are pointing to the Izayoi. Retaliation.” Hideko said.

Sakura was silent for a moment before speaking. “Keep the lockdown in place for the night. Assemble a small guard at first light to ensure that our delegation returns safely to us. I will speak to the surviving members immediately upon their return. Meanwhile, I must get a letter to Hinata no Kagen.” she said, the plan forming in her mind. This entire situation was madness. Sakura needed to confront this head on.

She prayed that she wasn’t too late.
