Play By: Lyrica Okano
Distinguishing Features: Masako looks like a proper Tacean Queen in public, she has warm brown intense eyes. Her clothing ranges from traditionally fashionable for a village queen to items that are more suited for the mainland in a variety of exciting colours. Those foriegn items are worn in private.

Personality

Personality:

Masako Yamashina is as quietly rebellious as she dares attempt to be. She's somewhat mercurial compared to an even Lighter Jewelled member of the Blood, and perhaps more easy-going than a much darker Jewelled person. Meaning of course, that her mood can change as the weather does with storm clouds for a time before suddenly, the sun has come out from behind them and offered a pleasant surprise of a rainbow.

Lady Yamashina perceives that it is difficult in the extreme to be different in Tacea, so all of Masako's perceived rebellions are minor details or extremely private, such as wearing foreign clothing when alone after she has dealt with Court business after a long day. Sometimes she'll ask a travelling trader to find equally foreign food items and if that turns out to be too difficult as it often is, Masako will save her money over years to purchase the delicacies from another region in Tacea. She does her very best, however, to keep a strict mask over these differences of hers and ways of breaking the mould of a ruling Queen. She always tries her very best not to overstep or make those above her angry, because there are many, many people ranks above Masako and she knows it.

She's easily cheered up if her feelings are soured, and was known to be a very sunny, tender baby with many long curious looks. Masako tries very hard not to make her mercurial nature become a problem for her parents or siblings. This now includes Court members, and the closest to her are aware of her strange likes and needs. The desire to rebel and to be different, to be more is not bigger for her than serving her people even as it chafes emotionally due to her youth. Masako is not selfish. She does her best to accept the small gains that she can get, while aware others cannot act out even with the minuscule manner she has. As a fraternal twin Masako is controlled in her mannerisms because her brother is not allowed as much as she is. This is even considering that they live in a smaller village to the southernmost area of the Izayoi Clan territory, and both their parents were less rigidly traditional than some.

A romantic for her platonic friends and while she loves her family, Masako is a young woman possessing a rose-coloured, warm view of what a Bond should be partly because of her twin brother, who she was Bonded with from birth. She has never known the pain that many have with the slaughtering of the Izayoi Dragon Mother's Court, and the vile whispers of all the other probably awful mutterings that the Izayoi Queens are busy with. Masako only knows village life and ruling, preferring a fair hand in everything she can manage. The Opal Queen is clever without being calculating as there is no need, intelligent and honest in her manner of speech.

Music, dance and martial arts practice, poetics and various light Jo staff and sword routines are commonly enjoyed portions of the young Queen's day. With a name that implies the meaning that one must be good and prosper, that being gracious and elegant are a softly worded requirement from strict parents who mean well mean to Masako they all intended for her to succeed and not be surrounded by difficulty for life.

Likes:

  • 1 Music: Gentle swells of both traditional and mainlander musical types, even while the latter is a secret delight easily draw the young woman's attention. Well trained in song, the Queen shines with her ability to perform on the biwa, shamisen, and koto. To a lesser extent, the "lower classed" and technically foreign guitar has been an interest since the very recent opening of the borders of Tacea to the mainland.

  • 2 Autumn Leaves: The lovely patterns of fall leaves are endless and colourful. For Masako, this as well an attribute that allows her appreciation of nature as a Queen. It is as important for the land to rest and sleep as it is to grow. The falling leaves are a reminder of this fact.

  • 3 Poetry: Some times the young Queen is considered a little of a Dreamy-head-in-the-clouds, which makes it easier to partake in one of her favoured activities, writing short poems. The beauty of the calligraphy form brings the feeling in the words to life. This serves as a release from day to day worries and stress. It is the greatest of the Six Virtues after all.

    Dislikes:

  • 1 Pressure on Males: Some of the slightly older men remain chafing and quietly dutiful while bitter at their lot in life. It drives Masako to a vast, deep frustration that men to do not have the same intrinsic value as women in her homeland that she has read and heard from the very, very rare traveller that they do on the mainland. Until the Regent Prince Corro stepped up (read: bravely) to lead a government intended to find a suitable Queen, Masako thought that such possibilities were only for people outside of Tacea.

  • 2 Lacking Freedom: Masako loves Tacean traditions, yet she strongly feels that over time and Tacea being closed away from the rest of Terreille has caused the balanced nature the Blood should possess in her homeland to become warped. She becomes anxious because too many of her elders consider it a shame for a man to partake in whatever he wants to learn. She finds it painful that most, including older matriarchs, have expectations for women that are too high. This has often made it difficult for her to understand and sympathize with them and worse, respect those that have come before even while being required to hold rigid to the pretense of respect.

  • 3 Arrogance: Confidence is important to possess to outpace feelings of anxiety and general uncertainty. Yet, those that are arrogant are an annoyance the Queen finds she neither wants or needs. Those that additionally use this negative presence to judge those that are not as skilled, wealthy or supposedly born the "wrong" gender cause Masako to simmer with anger.

    Fears:

  • 1 Tang Ancestry: Though it isn't entirely evident in her face and form, Masako has Tang ancestry on both sides of her family distantly. This has long been a family secret and a slight part of the reason her parents quietly allowed both the girls and the boys to equally learn in their family. Living in a small, practically backwater village whose closest neighbour is still another village these details were easy to hide and generally ignored so long as they remained private. Masako is viciously defensive and ultimately proud of each of her grandfathers leaving Zhang to try to make a better life, but she knows not everyone feels this way, and the idea of ridicule for loving her family hurts.

Her fear often has her usual perfectionist tendencies shift toward negative thoughts about herself, which increases her anxiety. Having to spend long periods in a pretense of being content makes not rebelling even more difficult. She is terrified of being found out or considered less, or not suitable for Court service despite having a Tang Queen as history speaks against women that do not hold to the status quo in most ways.

  • 2 Another Internal War: Tacea dealt with a long period of internal warfare among the Clans for a long time to settle upon a Dragon Queen before Lady Hinata no Kagen settled the issue by being the most clever. As a result, both commoners, the Tang and Hanwa are left out of the succession of the Queen ultimately ruling all of Tacea. For the first time that Masako has ever heard of, there's a Tang Queen on the throne. It makes her hopeful for other changes, but fearful that any one of the Four Clans could choose to rise and cause yet another war. It is often the least of the people that are asked to pay the greatest price for these fights, and as a Village Queen with people to care for, it terrifies Masako. Too many people die for the sake of power, which corrupts.

  • 3 Views on Male Literacy Discovered: As far as Masako is concerned, men should be allowed to read and write anything they choose and be free to love and simply be. Literacy for Masako was a turning point in her education where she first came to understand what passion meant, and it makes her burn with rage that fully half of Tacean society is forced to bend to a 'male cipher' which most women won't condescend to even glance at. However, she also understands that such a point of view could cause her disgrace, she could lose the village seat that she has gained, or end up a laughing stock, none of which make it easy to sleep at night.

    Craft Strengths:
  • 1 Queen's Gift: Masako's gift to the land works in a precise measure of ensuring healing to areas that have been overfarmed and suffering from drought as can be common in a village setting. She is also able to ensure that the growth for farmland is even and crops less likely to fail from disease, floods, or frost shock.

  • 2 Emotional Healing: The Queen's emotional healing is used in a manner that specifically targets blends of anxiety, stress and depression while she can undo slowly over time emotional healing used to negatively affect a target. This skill does not work for Masako without a clear recognition of consent unless the target's life is in immediate danger. She is better able to hone her focus with someone well known to her, or where both parties - Queen and recipient - enjoy each other's presence.

    Craft Weaknesses:
  • 1 Telekinesis: While Masako is capable of telekinesis, it takes a special effort not to nearly completely drain her Jewels even with small-item movements. When pushed even when her Jewels are at full capacity, she is sometimes known to faint or have horrible nosebleeds as a result.

  • 2 Seduction Craft: Masako is unable to push her Craft to work in matters of seduction but is as well particularly resistant to it but not in a pleasant manner. When pressed, it causes her pain instead of pleasure. When she tries using this Craft despite being well taught, it is as if she is trying to move a brick wall with just her hands and it quickly tires her out while draining her Jewels rapidly.

Mother: Mayumi Yamashina, Black Widow, Rose - Purple Dusk. Playwright, Children's Author. Quarter Tang. 50 | 144 AP

    Siblings:

Sister: Akiko Yamashina, witch. Rose - Purple Dusk. 28 | 166 AP.
Brother: Morimasa Yamashina, Fraternal Twin, Purple Dusk - Opal. Warlord Prince. 24 | 170 AP.*

History: While the tender-hearted and stubbornly protective Queen has been long taught that her family isn't exactly commoner, they aren't among known nobility anymore, either, and nor is she any relation to the Izayoi. Both the Yamashina and Nashimoto families were among those once absorbed by the current Four Clans long ago. She is the youngest of three children, born minutes after her twin brother, Morimasa. They Bonded after birth, it is assumed as Masako's Queen caste, was apparent and Morimasa's as Warlord Prince. There is a minority Tang heritage on both sides of the family, which has long been a family secret.

At age eight some four years after their elder sister Akiko came away with a beautiful Rose Jewel, the twins had their Birthrights on the same day. As their parents were already a married couple devoted to each other except for her mother's known long-time lovers, paternity wasn't a question. Morimasa gained a Purple Dusk, while Masako was granted a Summer Sky Jewel; it had been by her begging her parents that her brother was allowed to obtain his Birthright hours before her. That would not be the first time that Masako defended her siblings' right to be seen as someone separate and just as important and formed the background of her thoughts about Tacean culture even though those feelings were kept within the Yamashina home.

The young Queen constantly pushed gently for her parents to allow her twin brother to learn at an equal pace, which has remained rare for males. When public convergence upon the private did not allow this, Masako always returned to her brother to immediately teach him what she had learned. Their more traditional elder sister was eventually able to see value in her younger brother as a result. These tendencies were Masako's first exposure on some sense of what ruling would mean in terms of defending those that had less.

A warmly protective nature over her brother and the family background in the village setting of Nosegawa formed a core of a responsible and controlled young woman. Masako's maternal grandmother's deep depression over her husband's death - and Masako's third grandparent to die in the years from her 15th to 18th natal days - was the impetus for her to learn better control over her emotional healing. Music and poetry were her brightest points as an adolescent Queen, in addition to learning a variety of Queen's Craft and Protocol. Once Tacea shockingly reopened the borders, she slowly became determined to learn to find ways to creatively rebel from the expected status quo.

Masako had a Virgin Night arranged by her parents at age twenty after several months of considering various alternatives to handle their daughter's marked preference for women over men; safframate in rice wine was, in the end, decided as a way to ease her toward the Prince that would ensure their daughter would retain Jewel and sanity. Unfortunately, the dosage needed was overestimated accidentally, and despite the mind-altering consequence, her partner was able to keep her safe. This lead to Masako sleeping for two days afterward from sheer exhaustion, though she eventually recovered from the mistake. An Offering not long after led to an Uncut Opal Jewel. Following the previous Queen's death from old age, by surprise only to her, Masako was settled on as the Queen for Nosegawa and two other small villages less than a few hours walk from her home.

News of the slaughter in the Izayoi-lead Territory Court was something of a horrible combination of rage and shame that for a while even coloured day to day business as far out in Nosegawa. The "rule" of the first male ever in Tacean history by the Long-Lived Prince Corro that Masako could remember was talked about nearly endlessly for a time as it was shocking, exciting and scary. Eventually, those things did not continue to have an intense effect on daily life as details settled back to normal particularly after the enthronement of the new Dragon Queen, Lady Xiong Teng. After all, the population adds up to just less than three hundred people in the area between three villages. Ever since then, Lady Masako has quietly ruled with a small and reasonably stable Court for the past few years. The distant city of Nara is like a pipe dream, not to speak of Ito, the Starred City, which is where the Dragon Queen rules from.

    Show Us What You've Got

Character in Play: With the guide of the elderly, yet still spry and beautiful Priestess, Masako knelt at the pristinely clean altar. The soft music of the water fountain was soothing. She was now dressed in a perfect midnight kimono with red decoration along the hem for good luck, new for this auspicious occasion according to her grandmother, Natsuko. Her wooden geta had been removed at the outer door, as it was not proper to wear shoes in this place where the Mother slept, waiting for each of her children to greet her.

Tabi socks she still wore were a brand new white. The Birthright Jewel in Summer Sky she had worn since she was eight on a subtle silver chain was hidden under the layers of her clothing. She was more fond of warm, soft wool sweaters and long sweeping skirts from the mainland, but these were very hard to come by for a village Queen, ruler of miso soup and salad lunches and poetry books.

Her mother currently sat the same vigil she had for her other two children. Tears filled Masako's eyes as she wondered briefly if her mother would have given her brother the same due if she had not insisted on it. But that thought was let to flow away, like the sound of the water. Her eyes fell closed; the time crawled. She shivered at an answering whisper in the Darkness felt soul-deep. Had it been an hour? Three?

The sound of distant Kumi-daiko rose fast and passionate. Boom-boom-boom-boom, the rhythm was clear and steady. A flash of happiness suddenly lit up the presence of a warm Purple Dusk in two tones. One was lighter and another deeper and filled with sweeter secrets. Part of her wanted to stop there, to match her brother despite the louder drumming spurring her on. It was almost too tender, like the appearance of fresh green shoots of rice plants in the summer. Masako eased past both Purple Dusk, offering respect to their resplendence.

Sounds of the drumming grew more intense and paired with the sound of the biwa. The shamisen joined it and she could have sworn she felt the brush of the grass under her hands despite not having left the temple. Suddenly, a delighted feeling filled her as a Jewel which seemed made of fire called out in rich rainbow hues. It was an Opal, while the deeper whisper of the Blood Opal was Darker and dropped to a seductiveness Masako was uncertain of. Green grass became a Green Jewel. Each one was powerfully bright and deep. They became firebirds flying rapidly around her in circles mimicking the sound of the expressive koto. A choice needed to be made.

The drums ceased sharply. A deeply hued Opal Jewel rested in both her hands and Darkness became Light of the Dawn.
