Personality

Personality:
Lyudmila moves throughout her life with a sense of purpose that is born only to those that know both the Abyss and the Twisted Kingdom as intimately as she does. Both Black Widow and Priestess, the combination of Castes within her has lead to a woman who knows herself through and through. Her goals, desires, and everything in between are things that she has carefully plotted, outlined, and then carried out with certainty that things will go as she has planned.

As a matter of course, Lyudmila not only is strong-willed but has a strong sense of Self as well. Without that she would not be able to traverse the depths of the Abyss, to help guide people into the waters of the Darkness for Communion. Nor would she be able to let herself slip into the Twisted Kingdom to gain the insights that are found there. It is in being able to do these things, in learning how both the Darkness and the Twisted Kingdom call to her, that she has been able to guide and otherwise influence the world around her.

Without either of these things she would be lost, unsure of who she is, and thus Lyudmila works hard to help ensure others are able to be their best selves because everyone must understand their life is a blessing of Mother Night. It is the balance of her Priestess nature that keeps the more prickly aspects of being a Black Widow coming completely to the forefront. Her potential temper is softened, eased so that instead of a complete and utter dismissal for an offense, she instead gently chides and offers guidance on how to perform better.

Lyudmila, in short, is both the best and worst when it comes to being an educator. It is this same behavior, however, that makes her an excellent mediator. Having both canny and uncanny insight, Lyudmila works hard to ensure those around her are getting along. She is able to smooth out ruffled feathers even if she's the one that ruffled them.

In her personal life, outside of her work within both the Conclave and the Coven, Lyudmila is a different beast altogether. She pulls to her every bit of mystique that comes with being a Black Widow Priestess and wears it as a cloak with pride. Many had called her cold and unapproachable but the truth was they never knew the way to draw her out.

With most, Lyudmila maintains a perfect mask of Protocol and Etiquette as that helps ensure she does not get hurt. After all, she is very much aware that she has a soft underbelly and it would be all too easy for someone to get close and hurt her if she is not careful. Emotional pain, Lyudmila has learned, is some of the most damaging pain that can be felt without having ever experienced a single wound.

On the other side of that, however, she is unafraid of lashing out should someone manage to run afoul her temper. Anger is a hard emotion to pull from her, Lyudmila often spending more time at annoyed than anything more. However, when someone does manage to agitate her--often because of repeated offenses or likewise expressing doubt in her or her capability or, Night help them, speaking poorly of her husband--Lyudmila reacts with extreme prejudice. She is not at all afraid to cut someone down, to put them in their place, if they think for a moment that they are somehow better.

Lyudmila has worked too hard, worked too long, and will not suffer anything that jeopardizes that. Especially when it comes to her husband as she is both possessive and protective in equal portion, though in subtle and thoughtful ways, and will react faster when he is in jeopardy than herself.

With her being somewhat distant, holding it as a way to protect herself, she does not let very many close. Once she is drawn out, however, once Lyudmila has let someone within, they very quickly find her out for the warm and vivacious woman that she is. The one that is playful and troublesome in all the best ways, though her husband Kord is the only one that truly gets to see all the ways. It is for him that she has turned her plotting and planning for their benefit, helping to guide their future to where it should be.

Make no mistake: Lyudmila is a shrewd and devious political mind. If she was not she would not be able to navigate the precarious position of being part of both the Coven and the Hourglass. Or, as she truly prefers, been able to help gather all those secrets that they've amassed over the years so that they can continue rising.

It is her drive to see Kord reach all that he can that truly pushes her, Lyudmila having decided that that is where her best fate rests. They have been irrevocably tied together since the day they met, their futures twined together. She pushes for them to reach the heights, guides Kord forward, because that is the future they are destined for together. As long as they are together, as long as they reach as high a place they can where they are together and unbothered, Lyudmila is content.

Likes:
  • Politics - Some detest politics and yet they are part of them anyway, playing their roles and speaking poorly of them when they can. That is not the case with Lyudmila. If anything, she thrives within the Game that so many play. She takes a certain level of delight in being able to navigate, with ease, the ins and outs of the political landscape and finds the satisfaction of outmaneuvering someone--with Kord at her side--is second to only the most carnal of pleasures.
  • Finery - More than just enjoying the finer things in life, Lyudmila enjoys being able to learn all that she can about such objects. Her favorite sheets? They’re from a Mercer textile. Her latest journal? Specially imported from Glacia. There is something special about everything she owns, some story it holds of where it has come from, and it is through the finery that is part of her life that Lyudmila learns of the world around her.
  • Kord, her Husband - It might be obvious for some but this goes beyond just enjoying Kord’s company. When the lure of the Twisted Kingdom--the very Abyss--is loudest, it is his presence that helps her drown it out and ensure that she does not lose herself to it. Without him, without Kord’s balancing presence, then Lyudmila is not sure where she would be.
Dislikes:
  • Slavery - Slavery is something that greatly unsettles Lyudmila. It is one of the things that she was particularly outspoken about, quite glad to see first Lady Graveworthy’s initiative and then the Territory Court to follow suit. She has worked with people that have been collared, has tried to help ease the pain within their very Selves, and finds that it is something that is not so easily done away with. Worse: slavery comes in many forms, not all of them requiring a collar be visible. Whenever someone is subjugated, whenever someone is beholden against their will, Lyudmila sees a type of slavery and will advocate against it.
  • Pretentious Nitwits - Can you not? People who present themselves as something else, who try and act as if they are more than they are, greatly agitate Lyudmila. She can only tolerate so much, deal with so much of this behavior before she lashes out and verbally puts down the individual. Do yourself a favor and know what you’re talking about with her because otherwise, you’ve only proven that you’re not worth her time.
  • Being Alone - This is more than just being alone, without Kord. It is also tied to that of her moontime, finding that during such moments she is more alone than ever. The disconnection from her Craft, from the Darkness itself, makes her feel alone. Even the whisper of the Twisted Kingdom is not nearly as strong. Being with her husband helps, it eases the ache within her very being, but until it passes she truly feels bereft.
Fears:
  • Black Immortal - Something looms within Black Immortal, though Lyudmila cannot say quite what it is. With the eruptions of the other volcanoes of Tacea, she knows that Black Immortal could do so as well. The Darkness trembles and the Twisted Kingdom whispers something that is just out of her reach. Whatever it is, she is terrified that Kord and herself have potentially come to a land where they will be buried under the ash and destruction that only a volcano is capable of.
  • Becoming Lost - In the back of her mind she worries: what if she goes too far? Not just within the Twisted Kingdom but within the very Abyss itself. Both are places that she traverses, as Black Widow and Priestess, and both places feel like home to her. What happens, however, if she goes too deep and the way back becomes unrecognizable? What if she loses herself to a vision? The what ifs are innumerable and so Lyudmila does her best to keep herself in check.
  • The Wrong Path - Lyudmila guides them--Kord and herself--through a combination of things, not just born of her castes, and worries that one day she might lead them down the wrong path. They have risen, begun to make a name for themselves, and have found a new place to continue rising. Yet in the back of her mind, she worries that she will lead them down the wrong path, one that will see both of them losing it all. Such thoughts are often what keeps her up at night, Lyudmila unable to sleep until Kord soothes her.
Craft Strengths:
  • Chalice Protection - A mix of Black Widow and Priestess craft, Lyudmila is able to help in the reinforcement and protection of Chalices. Those who go through communion with her will find that they are not only refreshed but their Chalices are more secure than ever.
  • Blood-Imbued Webs - Lyudmila uses a combination of Blood Magic and her web-crafting abilities to help reinforce and strengthen the webs that she creates. This applies to any web she creates, enabling her to expend less Jewel power as another of her rank might have to. That said: it does not mean that she excels in any particular type of web-crafting only that her webs--be it Tangled, Security, or otherwise--simply require less power for her to fuel.
Craft Weaknesses:
  • Crafting Poisons - Lyudmila cannot make poisons, though she can identify them (which does take her longer than others). Other than seeing to the needs of her Snake Tooth, she simply does not bother with poisons at all.
  • Telekinetic Craft - Life would be so much easier if she had any skill with this type of Craft. A considerable power sink, leaving her with a headache and nothing moved at all, Lyudmila knows that such craft is beyond her and will never be possible.
Life Story

Family:
Mother: Vesna Viktorov (60 - b. 134AP) - Broken Black Widow - White to Rose
Father: Terentiy Viktorov (64 - d. 193AP) - Jeweless Blood
Husband: Kord Viktorov (32 - b. 162AP) - Prince - Rose to Summer Sky

History:
Born to Vesna and Terentiy Viktorov, Lyudmila's Priestess caste was obvious within the first few hours. Even as a babe, and then a toddler, the little Priestess was very self-assured and determined that she would be the one doing things. It led to all manner of mishaps, especially when she did not quite understand that she was supposed to simply be a child.

That came to a head when, at the age of eight, Lyudmila threw a fit that some within the Conclave remember to this day. The small Priestess had wanted to handle her Birthright herself, not have someone else help her with it. Not that that happened but thankfully the wise Priestess gently spoke of the ceremony to the young Lyudmila. It was that very same Priestess that would become her first mentor, Magda Gwerder, as she was not at all afraid of handling the stubborn child and finding her need to understand and do things herself delightful.

Or she did, at least, until Lyudmila's fourteenth birthday. With that came sudden and sharp mood swings, something that her mentor thought might be a sign of her first moontime. Her mother, Vesna, knew the emotional outbursts for what they were: the manifestation of her Black Widow Caste. Only a few weeks after her fourteenth birthday, Lyudmila was hit by a perfect storm of events: her Snake Tooth emerged and her first moontime came.

It was not a pleasant experience for anyone, least of all Lyudmila. The young Black Widow Priestess was beside herself, distraught as she could not truly feel the Darkness or hear the whispers of the Twisted Kingdom (something she was growing accustomed to) so strongly. This set something of a tone for the rest of her life, Lyudmila clinging to those around her and the feel of their presence--that of their Craft and very being--as a way to help mitigate her own disconnection.

For the next few years, Lyudmila's education was split between that of her mentor Magna and her mother Vesna. Each handled her differently, teaching her the ways of the two Castes she called hers. It was in these lessons that the Black Widow Priestess began to see the inherent problems with not only her education but that of the Conclave and the Coven. They might have thought her unwise, unable to see what was going on, but Lyudmila recognized that each of them were trying to sway her to fully serving one or the other.

It was compromising her education, potentially stunting her journey, and it was completely unacceptable. Both institutions--the Coven and the Conclave--had been at odds with one another ever since the Purge. With the lapse of mind healing Black Widows, the Conclave had taken a more heavy hand in providing therapy for the people. Thus the Coven believed that the Conclave was well on its way to amassing a great deal of power and potentially using Lyudmila to subvert them.

The truth was ... Well, Lyudmila never particularly cared what the truth was. She thought it was stupid for those that were of the Blood to fight amongst themselves. There were already too many injustices in the world, too many people that fought against one another. So she made her decision and angered both sides in the process. Lyudmila would complete her training without their influence.

At an old altar upon their family land, Lyudmila completed her Offering. Anyone that dared to argue with her, to say that her Summer Sky was a sign of her immaturity and inability were quickly put into their place. She had earned a reputation of being distant and cold with those that were not known to her, not afraid to speak her mind. Yet without the Coven or the Conclave trying to pull her one way or another, Lyudmila was able to truly begin to grow as a Black Widow Priestess.

Her particular combination of castes enabled her to help protect the Chalices of individuals that were at risk. This was especially of use for witches about to undergo their Virgin Night (she had done the same for her own, though it had been handled without note by a family friend) and for those that were in the long, tangled process of a mind healing.

It was in 181AP, the tension rising between the Coven and the Conclave, that Lyudmila could no longer take it. She chose to believe in the path she saw within her webs and approached both groups individually. It was a long, arduous process to work with each to help them come back together.

Lyudmila pointed out that if they did not put their petty squabbles aside they would be devoured by those outside of both. If not the Aristocracy, then the Courts, and the Dena Nehele would not survive its future without the guidance of both the Coven and the Conclave. Thus the Black Widow Priestess found herself as someone that was a part of neither side, an impartial presence that held both interests at heart.

As she was working with both groups, helping to ensure that they would not simply fall back into old patterns of sniping at one another, that Lyudmila met Kord Civeniu. Having been commissioned to make a stunning piece for the Viktorov family, his presence around the family home was one that she took note of.

For the first time, Lyudmila found herself interested in another but it was never that simple for her. No, Lyudmila enjoyed her games and if Kord was truly meant to be with her ... Well, then the lovely Prince would pass her tests. She made a point to be places that he was, purposely creating situations where they would interact with one another.

The Black Widow Priestess wanted to see how long it would be before the Prince realized just what she was doing. She did not have to wait very long at all, something that pleased her immensely. Her family, on the other hand, was not pleased by her fascination with the Civeniu heir. Not that she particularly cared to listen to them, ignoring them. When that no longer worked, Lyudmila and Kord stood together and made clear--in no uncertain terms--that the world, as well as their families, would benefit from their union. Lyudmila also, very quietly, pointed out that if they wished to ensure their family line continued onward past Kord and herself then they would cease their idiocy.

So in 184AP after a long courtship--though Lyudmila would say it took exactly the right amount of time--Kord proposed to her and they were wed. Wisely, her parents kept their complaints to themselves. Kord took the Viktorov name, as it was, and thus his fate was truly tied with theirs.

Over the next few years, Lyudmila continued to work as a mediator between the Conclave and the Coven. Eventually even helping found a group that would handle problems with an impartial eye whenever she was not available. That was the problem, of course. Lyudmila knew she would not be around forever and that her fate rested somewhere beyond Dena Nehele.

Lyudmila was content to wait, to see where that meant, and in the meantime made use of her talents to help further Kord's position within the Courts of Dena Nehele. When the District Court was not satisfying enough, it was time to move toward the Province Court. They were well on their way, a social star on the rise, but all that fell apart when the Decimation came.

Not only had her dreams and visions been filled with death and destruction but the Abyss itself trembled. She kept the fear out of her voice as she requested they avoid the party of Vitali Atreides. That night, when they went to sleep, Lyudmila ensured that Kord's respite was deep with sleeping draught of Black Widow creation. Her own was something else entirely but there was little she could do other than ride upon the waves as something awakened within the deepest parts of the Abyss.

Come the morning, they knew the truth: the Decimation had struck. The world was different, her father dead and her mother Broken. There was little time to breathe, Lyudmila immediately guiding Kord to the Territory Court to offer his services (and secure what she knew would be a future contract with the Steward) while she turned to both the Coven and the Conclave to begin helping pick up the pieces.

Had the Coven and the Conclave still been bickering with one another, petty squabbles distracting them from the true issues at hand, the people of Dena Nehele might have suffered even more. In the time since the Decimation, she has been working with both sides, helping where she can, and also providing her husband with the necessary information to do more than just secure his position within the Territory Court.

Yet that future outside of Dena Nehele was rapidly approaching and so she told Kord one piece of guidance: Take the offer when it's made.

Thus Kord found himself with the position of Ambassador to Tacea. There was just one additional note, something that Lyudmila knew was a play by the Steward. To send a male to Tacea, by himself, would likely not earn them any favors. No, they would send a pair. More importantly: a Black Widow Priestess of renown within their territory.

How else would they make clear that they understood what Dena Nehele had taken from them without offering something of value in return? A treasured daughter for the daughters that Dena Nehele now held.

Would it be enough? A paltry Summer Sky Black Widow Priestess for the bounty of a Black Healer? Lyudmila was not certain but all that matters is that she is at Kord's side and they will shape their future together.

Show Us What You've Got

Character in Play:
"You're early," said the Steward of Dena Nehele. Lyudmila recognized the statement of fact, not a question. She was expected to be early. There was even one of her favorite snacks sitting upon a small plate for her along with--she tasted the air with her senses--her favorite flavor of tea as well.

Kord's too from the smell of it.

"I don't really know how I feel about all this," said Lyudmila, watching the Black Widow Warlord Prince, "and please don't play coy. You know which this I mean."

"That is precisely why I am meeting with both you and your husband, Lady Viktorov," said Prince Mercer. "While your husband is exemplary, his skill with speaking and diplomacy worthy of praise, he is not the only one that needs to have a meeting to ascertain whether or not this will move forward."

Sometimes, just sometimes, Lyudmila truly did not like dealing with other Black Widows. Mostly because she did not particularly go in for the entire battle of who can be the most uncanny. (Something she was not sure she would win with someone like Prince Mercer who, whether he cleansed his scent or not, practically radiated that he lived with a part of himself perpetually within the Twisted Kingdom.)

"You mean the entire ..." her hand flipped through the air as she finally took a seat, knowing that her husband was finishing up and would be along shortly; she was also annoyed because she had just said don't play coy, "... bit about how Dena Nehele needs to make a statement in who they send as ambassador to Tacea. I do not like what that implies, Prince Mercer, about how my husband will be seen or treated when we arrive. We are equals." That last word was nearly snarled out. "Nor do I particularly appreciate being sent as some kind of glorified gift."

"Would you rather someone else go?" asked Prince Mercer, his gaze pointed and unphased by her rise in temper. Oh, she knew she was caught because there was no one else better. Not a single soul that would be better than Kord and herself. An individual on their own would probably find themselves quickly overwhelmed, culture shock as it were, and if it were a male ...

She breathed out.

"There is no one else," she stated plainly. "Not if you wish to make the impact you're aiming for. A beloved daughter of Dena Nehele as a token of goodwill for all that Tacea has done and given to us." Lyudmila leaned forward, fixing Kord's tea and then her own. "You're quite lucky I do like you, Prince Mercer, because this is a level of political bullshit that even I find annoying."

The Black Widow Warlord Prince laughed.
