The Basics

Character Name: Lore no Ariake
Nicknames:
Age and Birth Year:  359, b. 165 BP
Race:  1/2 Dhemlanese, 1/2 Tacean
Caste:  Blood female
Birth Territory: Dhemlan Terreille (raised in Tacea)
Home Territory: Tacea

Role: Antiquities Specialist
Faction: None

Appearance

Play By: Dichen Lachman
Distinguishing Features: Lore has a sharp face: high cheekbones, a strong jaw and a narrow nose, and hooded, light brown eyes with thick lashes. Her sun-blonde hair falls in waves to her shoulder blades - she usually wears it tied back. She is average height but gives the impression of being taller, lithe and willowy as she is. She carries herself with feline grace, always ready to climb, fight, or otherwise spring into action.

Personality

Personality: Feisty and inquisitive, Lore no Ariake was educated at some of Terreille's finest learning institutions and has worked at several more. She is sharp-tongued and confident, always ready to push forward her own opinions, theories, and interests, and drives a hard bargain - even when a discussion was not meant to be a negotiation. She wears her long life as a point of pride, and spends her time racking up accomplishments - she counts her years in papers published, grants gotten, and awards won, and grows anxious when she feels she lacks direction or a goal to pursue.

She is quick to make connections and bonds with people easily, treating new acquaintances with the same warmth as old friends. However, she is bad at keeping up with others, prone to vanishing into radio silence for years at a time before resurfacing as though no time has passed. She also has a tendency to let wrongdoings go, holding a grudge for a few weeks or months before waving it away and pretending it never happened. Life is too long to be bitter, but - she holds all of her friends, acquaintances, and even lovers at an arm's distance, wary of catching actual feelings. She's a long-lived gal in a short-lived territory, and she knows how this song goes.

Lore lives with a sense of forward momentum. She is vividly animated in her body language, eschewing the Tacean norms she was raised with - she talks with her hands, peppers her conversations with friendly touches and generally ignores personal space. She is an unrepentant fidgeter and tinkerer, always in motion. She has all the time in the world, and still hates to stand idle or waste time. If she is not putting every second of the day to use, she isn't satisfied.

Likes:
  • 1 - Adventure Lore lives to see new places and experience new things. She loves the idea of being one of the first (or THE very first) to discover something, to go somewhere, to find a treasure. She is an adrenaline junkie who lives on the edge - the best part of academic life is the field work, and she only keeps writing papers and submitting for grants so she can keep on running off to the furthest corners of the realm.
  • 2 - Winning Some would say Lore is competitive to a fault - Lore would say that there's nothing wrong with being the best. She likes to be assured of her superiority, whether by securing competitive research grants or besting others in contests of smarts, luck, or skill. Rest assured, if something could possibly be framed as a competition, Lore is determined to come out on top.
  • 3 - Good Company Lore surrounds herself with interesting people, cultivating acquaintances like someone else might cultivate a library. She fills her social calendar with salons and soirees and loves to host gatherings with carefully-planned guest lists. She enjoys making connections and playing matchmaker.

    Dislikes:
  • 1 - Waiting You would think that living as long as Lore has would teach one patience, but then you'd be wrong. She is impatient to a fault, and hates to wait or have her time wasted. Things should happen as quickly as possible - meetings should run on time, travel should never be delayed, and kitchens should never be backed up. If you are late for an appointment with Lore, good luck getting her to still see you.
  • 2 - Being Second Best Lore is a supremely poor loser, but she ESPECIALLY can't stand being a runner-up - it's a slap in the face. An insult. The idea of having been so close to victory only to have it snatched from her grasp drives her up the fucking wall. She would rather be left in the slush pile than singled out for second place.
  • 3 - Drama Lore spent her childhood the subject of gossip and speculation, and as a result has minimal patience for Interpersonal Bullshit. She doesn't really care who is sleeping with whom or why two of her friends might be at odds - none of this knowledge is productive. Lore avoids getting sucked into petty squabbles, preferring to set her sights on loftier goals and nobler pursuits.

    Fears:
  • 1 - Commitment Lore has lived four times as long as her short-lived peers. Her grandparents and mother and cousins have all grown old and died. She has watched lovers go from young and vibrant to their deathbeds and it all feels like it's going a little faster each year. She doesn't like to wait for things to lose their novelty - job postings. Relationships. Lore moves on before they can begin to feel stale. She fears being tied down, having to watch people she cares for growing old and dying - it's so much easier to just avoid commitment entirely.
  • 2 - Failure Lore can deal with rejection, albeit badly - what she fears is complete and total failure. Years wasted pursuing a bad hypothesis. Having a rival publish before her and render her research useless. When her efforts prove wasted, she has a very, very hard time coming to terms with the aftermath and moving forward.
  • 3 - Being Alone While Lore dreads long-term commitment, she also fears the opposite - being completely alone, without any human connections to speak of. She collects acquaintances obsessively, cataloging who she knows and where so that she'll never find herself in a strange city with no one to eat dinner with. She likes to know she is thought of fondly and frequently and hates the idea of being forgotten. She cannot stand to go too long without seeing a friendly face. However, knowing as she does that she will eventually outlive all her short-lived companions, she cannot help but consider a friendship's eventual end right from its start, and that knowledge weighs heavily on her.

    Craft Strengths:
  • 1 - Telekinesis Lore often works with items too fragile to be touched by human hands. She has honed her telekinetic abilities over time to have finer-than-average motor control and uses them to examine delicate artifacts.
  • 2 - Psychic Cabinet Lore's psychic cabinet is obsessively stocked and organized. She is prepared for most situations she might encounter in the field and able to quickly summon or vanish items suitcase-sized or smaller.

    Craft Weaknesses:
  • 1 - Emotional Projection Lore is not skilled at pressing her feelings onto others, and relies on her sparkling personality to make friends and influence people.
  • 2 - Communication Craft Receiving psychic threads gives Lore a headache. She finds returning them exhausting and cannot start threads. She will sooner announce that she is right here and capable of speech than respond by thought in all but the most delicate situations.

    Life Story

    Family:
Mother: Sadako no Ariake, Summer Sky to Opal Witch, Deceased. (188 BP - 102 BP)
    Father: Unknown Dhemlanese Male
Siblings: None relevant or known to her.

    History:
Sadako no Ariake was a daughter of the main line of the Ariake clan, and grew up accustomed to the benefits that wealth and power brought her. She was clothed in the finest silks, educated by the finest teachers, and when, at twenty-two, she wanted to take a tour of the mainland, arguing that there were plenty of places that were relatively peaceful, her parents footed the bill. She sent letters home, postmarked from exotic locales across Terreille, detailing the sights she was seeing, the new foods she'd tried, and the new friends she was meeting in her travels.

She did not mention her handsome, gold-eyed paramour in any of her letters, nor the child she'd conceived shortly after her initial arrival in Dhemlan, so when she arrived home a year later with an odd-eyed newborn in her arms, it was much to the surprise of her entire extended family.

Lore was raised mostly by her grandparents, who no longer trusted their daughter to be anything resembling responsible. They were good role-models, and loving enough, though their affection was always sheltered behind a typical mask of Tacean reservedness. Lore stood out among her cousins, too tall and differently-complexioned, the angles of her face foreign and striking. Sadako named no father at her birthright, and that, coupled with Lore's failure to bring forth any Jewel at all, brought more gossip.

Lore did her best to fit in, devoting herself to her studies, learning martial arts and tea ceremonies and everything her grandparents expected of her. But every social gathering was more unbearable than the last, as Lore, now a teenager, became increasingly aware that she would never be able to go unremarked upon among her mother's family.

Taking inspiration from her mother before her, she made plans to leave Tacea - after submitting applications to several universities on the mainland, she accepted an invitation to study in Dhemlan Terreille. She hoped that she might find the sense of belonging she'd always lacked in Tacea in her father's homeland - and perhaps even find her father - but found that the same problems that plagued her back home followed her across the sea.

In Dhemlan, as in Tacea, her mixed ancestry marked her for an outsider. Professors were reluctant to give her the same internships and research opportunities as her long-lived classmates, and Lore responded by doubling her efforts. Eventually, her hard work paid off - each curve broken and each standout project presented won her the praise and recognition she craved, and she graduated at the top of her class.

After leaving university, Lore began the first of several post-graduate positions at cultural institutions across Terreile. Her interests centered around deep history - collecting and protecting artifacts from a time before even the oldest long-lived. Her preservation work brought her into contact with the Sisters of Ink, a revolutionary group devoted to saving cultural artifacts from regions affected by the seemingly-interminable war.

Through each posting and stint of field work, Lore continued her double life - grant-chasing academic by day, and culture-preserving freedom fighter by night, her various adjunct offices and study carrels one stop on an underground railroad for priceless treasures. By the time the purge struck and the war ended, she'd seen entire generations of short-lived academics enter the field and phase out of it, and established a solid network of collaborators and intellectual equals across the realm.

She had long strayed from her homeland, but now Lore found the borders of Tacea closed in her face, and with her on the outside. Of course, she did not dwell on her exile for long - she'd never minded when it was by her own decision, and though she'd been back while her immediate relatives were still alive, by now she was something of a family oddity, a distant long-lived cousin no one was sure what to do with.

Instead, Lore turned her attention to all of the things she could do as the world around her rebuilt, taking full advantage of her seemingly-endless youth. She made friends - and buried them. She wrote papers and chased grants and did field work. She briefly entertained the idea of locating her father - and quickly decided it was a waste of her time. She spent years devoted to extremely specific fields of study because she had the liberty to do so.

Most recently, Lore has spent some two decades in Raej, her attention focused on ancient tombs in the river valley beyond Kemet. Though she doesn't expect them to belong to anyone important, Lore still views the work as necessary to furthering academia's understanding of the history of Terreile, and she's been given a not-insignificant budget and team of students to oversee. However, the dig is set to finally wrap up soon, and Lore is preparing her findings to publish and focused on planning her next adventure.

Following the recent calamity in Tacea, Lore's attention has turned once more to her mother's homeland. Though she expects no great homecoming, being one of the first archaeologists to enter the dragon islands (and in the midst of enormous social upheaval, no less) is a tremendous academic opportunity. Lore knows an opportunity when she sees one, and she knows that opportunity seldom knocks twice. She has already applied for grants  - all she needs is permission and funding, and she's ready to set off for Ito.

    Show Us What You've Got

    Character in Play:
She'd traveled all night for this, and they'd left her to languish in the lobby for fifteen minutes past her appointment time.

Lore had a good idea of what the academic council was going to say - the deans didn't make people run all over Terreile just to reject their funding proposals. If they'd decided her expedition to Tacea was not worth the coin, they would have told her so in a letter. Her failure wouldn't have cost them more than a single sheet of paper.

She had been an academic for nearly three and a half centuries, and being called to appear in person never lost its novelty. Though Lore had arrived with plenty of time to refresh herself before the meeting, she made sure to look authentically travel-worn. There was a lot of pressure on her to accomplish something great in half as much time as her fully-long lived peers, and showing up to a funding meeting in field clothes and a tan would help show that she wasn't just idling her life away in Raej.

Speaking of idling her life away in Raej... That was another reason she was glad to have been called to this meeting. The last two decades had been productive ones, and Lore was happy with the work she'd done and the papers her team had published... though the subject matter was certainly what could be described as niche. But it was time to move on. Perhaps in another hundred years she'd be able to return to the site with fresh eyes - but the situation in Tacea presented a compelling new frontier, and who would be better prepared to survey the territory and preserve its cultural heritage than someone who'd grown up there?

For once in her life, Lore's short-lived side would prove to her advantage.

"Lady Ariake?" an aide asked, sticking his head out from the council chambers. "They're ready for you."

Lore got to her feet, ran a quick hand through her hair, and straightened the front of her sun-worn trousers. "Excellent," she said, crossing the room in a few broad strides. "I'm ready for them."
