Distinguishing Features: Her eyes are a shade of rich, warm golden amber.  Her black hair is almost always half up half down with a single jeweled pin in a traditional Hanwa style for an unmarried woman of her age.  Hae Jun is a couple of inches shorter than most women with delicate features

Personality

Personality: There are many words that could be used to describe Hae Jun; fierce, stubborn, bold, determined, dedicated and prideful are but a few.  She has always been proud of her heritage, of her people, of her family (though recently not of her father), and of the fact that her mother believed in her ability to lead.

Hae Jun strives to be honest and fair in her dealings with her people and with anyone else she is dealing with.  She doesn’t like to wheel and deal, to make one alliance only to discard it later.  She knows that as a Queen she may have to make bargains she doesn’t like, but she hopes that those instances will be few and far between.  For the most part anyone interacting with her will get nothing but the truth from her and before she makes a ruling or decision one can expect her to pick it apart and look at all sides of the issue.  She wants to make good informed decisions but this can lead to her hesitating to make a decision at all if she doesn’t feel like she all of the facts.

Hae Jun is also compassionate, but can sometimes let her emotions get the better of her.  Making snap decisions that can lead her into dangerous waters whenever she feels insulted.  This has led her to try and find ways to regain her emotional balance through practicing her music, spending time outside or sparring with anyone who will accept the challenge.  She is desperately trying to channel her grief and anger into productive activities to lessen the chance that she might say something she shouldn’t.  She recognizes that she serves no one by seeming to be uncontrollably emotional.  So she attempts to maintain a shroud of cool distance when interacting with those outside the Hanwa tribe.

Hae Jun does have a keen political and strategic mind.  With her parents being who they were, Queen of the Hanwa and a military legend how could she not, but her age and the stress she’s been under lately mean that she may react without stopping to think an action through.  She is still a bit naive about court politics, yes she was raised to rule the Hanwa but she also was not ready to take the seat of Hanwa Queen.  This should have happened years down the road and her mother should have still been available for her to seek advice from.  So in essence she is like a ship cast adrift in choppy, dangerous seas with no safe anchor point in sight.

Her people's needs have always come first for her so she has buried her grief deep and attempted to focus on them instead of dealing with the pain of losing so many members of her family.  She doesn’t sleep well most nights and tends to be found outside in the garden at all times of the day and night.  She also tends to bury herself in work to distract herself from thinking about everything she has lost.  Taking care of the twins she recently adopted helps as well as their antics are a welcome distraction from other worries.

Hae Jun is very traditional in the way she dresses, styles her hair and acts in public.  The music she likes, the art she appreciates is all very traditional as well.  Her opinion on her father taking up leadership of the Territory is best not repeated in polite company or near small children.  She finds his actions highly insulting not to her but to her mother’s memory.  Still she is not so traditional that she can’t see that some things need to change.  Which is why she has begun to suggest that male children receive the same education as their sisters and be allowed to choose their own career paths, within reason.  After all both her father and brother are very well educated, as are Geisha’s.  She sees no harm in it, so long as they don’t start trying to rule towns, districts, provinces or territories.  She isn’t just promoting this step but practicing it as well educating her ward/adopted son Chin Hae Hwang the same as his twin sister Sang Hee Hwang.

Hae Jun will do anything for her people.  She understands that every Hanwa living has lost someone and that some have no family left at all.  She knows that some were so crushed by the losses that they took their own lives.  There has been so much suffering that she has made it her goal to prevent any more if she can.  This includes fighting to preserve her peoples names, rights and traditions while still encouraging them to settle into life on mainland Tacea peacefully.  Truly all she wants is for her people to be treated fairly and honestly by the four Great clans and allowed to practice their own ways without being punished for it.  The Hanwa have lost enough, have lost their hearts, she will not let anyone steal their soul from them too; and while she is willing to try and negotiate and speak with those responsible for this she is not above striking a more lethal blow if needed.

Above all else Hae Jun is the Queen of the Hanwa, the only Queen of an age to rule, as far as anyone can tell.  She will NOT be the Last Queen of the Hanwa.

Likes:
  • 1 Music: She is an accomplished musician and finds the playing of her instruments to be incredibly relaxing.  Her favorites to play are the traditional Hanwa instruments the Haegeum and Gayageum.  She is quite skilled with both and often played for her mother and the rest of her family.

  • 2 Tending the Land: She is never more at home anywhere else than she is when outside in the garden.  She never wears shoes in her gardens to ensure a strong connection to the land and can be found outside whenever she needs time alone to think.  She loves feeling the dirt on her hands and the satisfaction of watching a plant she’s nurtured reach its full potential brings her joy.  Lately this love for gardening has proven to be a boon as she nurtures crops of vegetables and herbs to help feed her people.

  • 3 Martial Arts: While she loved spending time with her mother and they were very close this was something she shared with her father.  She insisted that he be her primary teacher and she spent as much time with him practicing her stances as she could.  She’s found that the skills learned here have taught her not just how to defend herself but how to control her sometimes more emotional responses to events around her. . . and it’s relaxing to sometimes take her frustrations out on a physical target.

    Dislikes:
  • 1 War:  War should always be a last resort.  For that matter spilling blood is something that should be done only after great consideration for the potential backlash.  War is messy, war is brutal, war is expensive both in lives and in the damage done to the land.  While she is not afraid to kill in defense of her people she will try all other methods, negotiation and trade before taking more permanent action against even her worst enemy.

  • 2 Traveling: She travels a lot from refugee camp to camp, but she doesn’t like it.  Being on the road is exhausting, she has to pack, make sure those traveling with her have packed, prepare supplies, find transportation, prepare for emergencies and somehow make sure her twins education isn’t too disrupted by the constant travel.  The constant moving she’s done for the last two years means that she’s never really settled in any one place which means she doesn’t feel at ‘home’ anywhere.  The traveling is necessary for her people, to reassure them that they do have a Queen who is trying to care for them.  It is also exhausting and draining and she wants desperately to just settle down.

  • 3 Winter: It is important for the land to rest and recover from producing crops during the rest of the year but she hates the cold and the snow and the silence that seems to blanket the land.  Winter means she is stuck indoors while her gardens sleep and she tends to be more temperamental during the winter months than she is during the rest of the year.  Also she just hates being cold and can’t understand why other people like playing in snow so much.

    Fears:
  • 1 Failing her Mother’s Memory: When the Volcano erupted her mother refused to leave, staying behind to assist in the evacuation with her Court.  Her efforts saved many lives including Hae Jun’s.  She knows that her mother would want her to care for her people, keep them safe and help them to flourish after this disaster.  The thought that she may not be up to the task keeps her awake at night.  She wants to be the kind of Queen that her mother would have been proud of.

  • 2 The Loss of Hanwa Culture: Her people have lost everything, many were orphaned and no Hanwa living did not lose someone to the Volcano.  They have become refugees clinging to what little they have, which in many cases is only what they could vanish or grab before fleeing Kaesong on the winds and boats.  This slow murder of the only real thing her people have left; their traditions, their names, their unique rites is unacceptable to her and yet deep down she fears that nothing she does will stop it.

  • 3 Queen’s Bond: Other Queens look forward to this bond between them and a male, some actively search for it and others feel like failures if they don’t find a bonded male during their reign.  Hae Jun used to feel that way now she dreads it.  She’s already found one bonded male, a Warlord named Hyun Ki, only to feel that bond snap.  He had been visiting his family when the eruption began and none of them survived.    That loss almost crippled her, he had been her closest friend, confidant and she’d already asked him to be her consort when she formed her court.  She doesn’t want to form a bond like that again only to lose it.  His loss brought home the fact that she will likely outlive the males that she forms bonds with.  Having experienced what that is like once and seeing how apathetic and depressed her father can be after living so long and experiencing similar losses she can’t help but fear that this is what her own fate will be.

    Craft Strengths:
  • 1 Queen's Gift: Hae Jun loves tending to the land and takes great pride in this facet of her Caste.  She is especially adept at enriching crops and agricultural land to be more productive for longer periods with less strength expended than another Queen might need to use to accomplish the same effect.  Nothing gives her as much joy as watching a withered or untended piece of land become healthy once more.  This is one way where she can see the physical results of her actions as a Queen as a healthy field could be the difference between eating well or going hungry for her people.

  • 2 Reading Emotions: Perhaps it’s because she is no good at using the Queen’s Touch to soothe, Hae Jun has developed a deft talent for using Craft to read the emotions of the room and the people around her with almost uncanny accuracy.  Hae Jun is very adept at knowing when she is being lied to or mislead and how those around her truly feel both about her and topics being discussed.  She is especially good at picking up the faintest trace of intent to do harm to herself or another from the males and females around her.

    Craft Weaknesses:
  • 1 Compulsion Craft: Hae Jun does not like Compulsion crafts of any kind.  Interfering with another person’s free will to compel them to do something they would not do of their own volition seems dangerous to her.  She believes these spells are both too easy to rely on and too easy to misuse.  Thus she refused to even study this craft and has no idea how to form even a basic compulsion spell.

  • 2 Queen's Touch: To her mother’s dismay Hae Jun has never been good at this.  She can soothe with a touch but it takes two to three times the amount of energy than it would for another Queen if the spells work at all. Four out of five times she attempts this the spells fizzle out with no effect and the one time they work they either take too much energy or work for a much shorter time than would be expected.

    History:
She is the daughter of Seung Corro and Jang Hye Mhin and is proud of that family history.  Born on a clear spring morning her birth was celebrated by the family as the labor had been a long and difficult one for Jang Hye.  There was some concern for Jang Hye as she had gone into labor two weeks earlier than expected and was in labor for almost a full day.  So the relief was great when she gave birth to a healthy baby girl.  It was apparent from birth that she was the heir her mother had wanted and her destiny was set for her from that moment onward.  She was a serious child but also a playful one constantly keeping her parents on their toes.

As with most young Queens she learned protocol, art, dance, music (which she showed a natural aptitude for and often had to be dragged from these lessons by one of her parents or her older sister), literature, politics, history and anything else her tutors could think of.  Her days were filled with lessons when she was younger and after her Birthright when she came away with the Rose, she began shadowing her mother to observe the interactions between Queen and court.  Jang Hye was determined that her daughter would understand the land and people that she would one day rule and was both firm and demanding in her lessons with her daughter.  Still the pair had a very close relationship which grew even closer as Hae Jun grew older and more sure of herself.

Her relationships with her siblings were fairly normal though she was closer to her younger brother than to any of the others.  Hae Jun was a quick study as a child and took each lesson as a new hurdle to conquer but occasionally she grew tired of the constant demands and oversight of her life.  When the urge for freedom struck she would enlist her brother Haneul’s help in slipping away.  She refused to let him take the blame the couple of times they were caught sneaking away accepting the punishment herself.  Hae Jun repaid her brother for his help by bringing him new books whenever she found one she thought he would be interested in.  Hae Jun didn’t have much patience for her older sister Myung Hye, she too was a Queen and one with darker jewels than Hae Jun, and yet she wasn’t interested in anything to do with her caste.  To Hae Jun’s young eyes it was a waste and irresponsible thus their relationship has always been a strained one.

Hae Jun idolized her father as a child spending as much time with him as she could.  She especially loved helping him tend to the crops and when she began her martial training insisted that he be the one to teach her.  At the time she didn’t think much beyond wanting to not just spend more time with him but also to make him proud of her skills.  He taught her how to take advantage of her smaller size and she still practices those skills keeping herself in amazing shape.  As she grew older and looked back at those lessons she realized that it must have been difficult for him to teach her as the lessons surely dredged up bad memories from long ago.

As Hae Jun reached her early teens she began spending more and more time with her mother’s court.  She became more serious and responsible rarely acting out but she still occasionally played practical jokes on her favorite target, her brother.  It was one of these pranks that started out innocent and devolved into an argument that led to hurt feelings on both sides and to the brother and sister refusing to speak to each other for several months.  It was Ji Yoon who put a stop to the argument but Hae Jun and Haneul were never quite as close afterwards.  Hae Jun has always regretted this, but she has pride in spades and couldn’t quite bring herself to apologize for something that was never meant to do harm in the first place.  Now though she wishes she had, and if she gets the chance she will but she wonders if perhaps it will be too little too late.

Her virgin night and Offering to the Darkness were carefully arranged by her mother months in advance.  A trusted male from her mother’s first circle safely seeing Hae Jun through that very dangerous night just after her 20th birthday.  She made the Offering two weeks later and made a full descent to the Opal much to her parents joy.  She joined her mother’s court on an official basis serving in the second circle along with a few other trainee Queens.  Making friends didn’t come easily to her as she felt the pressure of her mother's hopes even more so now.  Hae Jun had to learn quickly who she could trust and who she couldn’t, who would be a good friend and who could only be trusted while her eyes were on them.  Those few years she spent with her contemporaries before the eruption consumed her attention as she strove to prove that she should and could take her mother’s place as the Queen of the Hanwa.

She did achieve a coup though finding her first bonded male at only 21 years old.  She and Hyun Ki became first friends and then lovers over the next few years and with her mother’s blessing a marriage was beginning to be negotiated.  The eruption shattered everything, all the plans, all the hopes, thousands of lives, all lost in a flash.  Hae Jun is alive because her mother asked her to go with the first group of refugees to the larger Islands to assist with getting their people settled comfortably.  The hope was that the eruption would not be as large as feared but it proved to be even more devastating than anyone could have imagined.  Now she sometimes wonders if her mother sent her away knowing that she was going to die and Hae Jun would as well if she didn’t leave.

As it is Hae Jun has spent the last two years struggling to help her people recover from the disaster.  She has attempted to conduct a census of the survivors to figure out how many blood, landen, adults and children of the Hanwa remain to attempt to reunite families separated during the evacuation.  So far it seems that she is the only Hanwa Queen left and has assumed that leadership position.  She has family among the Ariake clan so it would be easy for her to live in comfort with them but she has spent the two years since the eruption traveling between the Refugees among the Ariake and Kagen provinces.  They are her people and she is responsible for the well being of all of them, a responsibility that she takes very seriously.

Hae Jun knows well the suffering of her people, having lost so many of her family and a man she loved.  If asked she will not lie and say she doesn’t feel partly betrayed by her older sister Ji Yoon and brother Haneul for not coming back to the Hanwa.  It seems to her that she has been written off and forgotten and that hurts almost as much as losing her mother and sole bonded male in the eruption.  She spent weeks drifting in a fog of grief and depression through the refugee camps.  She was acting on autopilot as she struggled to comprehend what had happened.  It was meeting two small orphaned children that finally snapped her out of it.  They had no family left and no one she asked wanted to take both the boy and the girl with resources so scarce.  A family offered to take the girl and to leave the boy at a temple or Okiya but Hae Jun refused to allow them to be seperated.  They had lost enough so she took them in herself.  She named them her wards and haven’t letting them live with her for two years and with no sign of their family she officially adopted them after their Birthright ceremony.

The twins, Chin Hae Hwang and his sister Sang Hee Hwang had their birthright ceremony only recently.  The fact that Chin Hae came away with a dark Jewel has prompted a few in her court to resume suggestions to send him to an Okiya to limit the impact on the Refugees.  It is difficult to feed those with dark Jewels at the moment and they argue it would be best for everyone if he was not living with them.  Hae Jun has stood firm though and refuses to even consider the option and went through with her plan to adopt them both.  As such the twins tend to stick close to her and to become upset when she is gone for extended periods of time.  Taking the twins into her household was a snap decision, but she’s found that helping them to work through their own grief has helped her as well.

Hae Jun has buried herself in her work to help her people begin to recover.  Her constant traveling between the camps in the provinces held by both the Ariake and the Kagen means it is hard to track her down.  She may be in one camp one week and another the next depending on the needs of her people.  She’s had more interactions with the Ariake clan than any other trying to work out agreements about land, business opportunities, trading of skills, housing, food and medical supplies.  While she worked out a few agreements with the now deceased Kagen Queen they were primarily understandings between the two women rather than written ones.  While she has worked hard for her people there are still rumors that there is no ruling Queen left among the Hanwa because she is so hard to find and speak to.  Her days are filled with tasks and she has little time for anything that won't directly impact the lives of her people.

Recent events with this so called Interregnum have served to anger her.  While she is not above expanding traditional female roles to those of both sexes she does not believe a male should rule.  The fact that her father has taken leadership of the Territory feels like a slap in the face to not just Tacean culture but to her own mother’s memory.  She loves her father, has always respected him, but she is beyond furious with him at this action and thus has refused to reach out to him in any way.  Her anger is only fueled by the recent actions of the Kagen toward the Hanwa and the Tang seeking refuge in their provinces.

She understands that change is inevitable now that Kaesong is gone. She knows that some things will have to change and the Hanwa will have to adapt but right now she believes that forcing change on her people will only cause more harm than good.  She isn’t sure how much more her people can take before many of them simply shatter apart or lash out in anger.  It’s part of the reason why she’s returned to the Kagen provinces.  As word of discontent among the Hanwa in those provinces reached her in the Ariake refugee camps.  With the recent upheaval among the Kagen she is worried that there may be more pressure applied to her people under this new Queen for the Hanwa to conform.  She is concerned that some of her people may simply snap and lash out if this is the case.

    Show Us What You've Got

    Character in Play:
Hae Jun had spent all night shut up in what amounted to an office in a cramped tent in the middle of one of the Refugee camps.  To say her mood was sour would have been an understatement.  She would have preferred to be outside in the garden rather than chained here at this desk.  There was a never ending list of things that needed to be accomplished and not enough time to accomplish even a quarter of them during the day.  There were a few things she needed to prioritize food, shelter, medical care and the safety of her people were some of them.  Getting a proper census of the blood and landen, Dark Jeweled and Light Jeweled, children and adults, and casted men and women, as well as trying to reunite families was another.

She’d been to two camps so far and had collected a census at each.  This was her third stop and though she planned on being here for the next few days to ensure the twins would have their Birthright ceremony at this altar overseen by a Hanwa Priestess she still had plenty to do.  There were a few things like the letter she was currently working on that she wanted to finish before morning so she could have some time to spend with the twins.  She was just finishing the letter to the local District Queen asking if she could spare one of her Healers to assist in the camp on a more regular basis, when a figure slipped through the doorway.

She stood as Hei-Ran Khim, a Yellow jeweled witch that served as a messenger between the camps on her behalf, stepped into the room.  The older woman was pale, eyes wide as she locked gazes with Hae Jun.  She bowed and Hae Jun returned the gesture before moving around the desk to her side, “Are you alright?  Has something happened?”  she asked quickly as she guided the clearly shaken woman to a seat and poured her a cup of tea.

Hei-Ran swallowed the tea in one long gulp before setting down the cup with a slightly trembling hand and pulling out what looked like an official declaration.  Fearing the worst Hae Jun took it into her hand and opened it.  She read it twice, before vanishing it and standing in silence.  Her eyes on the back wall of the tent.  She traveled so much she wasn't shocked that she hadn't known about the incident described on the page, more concerned with her own people rather than the going's on outside the camps.  Still, this was. . . shocking.

She felt as if she had just fallen through ice, her breath seized from her throat by the chill.  Only when she exhaled and saw the fog of her breath did she realize the temperature actually had dropped inside the tent.

Gathering control of her emotions she released a breath and turned to Hei-Ran who was watching her warily.  Giving the messenger a small smile she spoke, her voice tightly controlled, “Thank you.  You must be exhausted from your trip.  Please go and rest, the escorts outside can direct you to an empty tent.”  Hei-Ran looked as if she wanted to speak and then thought better of it, standing she bowed and slipped out the door.

Hae Jun watched Hei-Ran leave and stood in silence for a moment.  Outwardly calm but inside her emotions roiled like boiling water. Stepping around the partition separating the sleeping area from the work area she checked on her twin wards, soon to be her adopted children if tomorrow went to plan.  Once she was sure they were sleeping peacefully she wrapped them in physical shields.  Repeating the process on herself with both physical and aural shields and slipped through the wall of the tent.

She made her way through the camp to a secluded spot on the cliff overlooking the ocean.  Watching the sky begin to lighten overhead she listened to the waves for several minutes and only when she felt calm did she call in the letter.  She read it one more time, locking the details into her mind.  Ishiyo no Izayoi mad, her court slaughtered, Naruko no Kagen among the dead, Hinata no Kagen coming out of retirement and an Interregnum court being created.  She didn’t care about most of the letter beyond the inconvenience of the thought of having to negotiate with a different Kagen Queen about her people and their needs.

Re-reading the last bit, that the Interregnum court was not being led by a Queen as it should but by a Warlord Prince, her father. . . she didn’t even finish the sentence before her temper flared.  A rock nearby shattered under a blast of Opal power.  Dust and debris filling the air as pieces impacted the shield she’d woven around herself.  The letter in her hand turned to ash that floated away on the ocean breeze.  A single tear froze on her cheek, frost collecting on the ground around her feet as she hissed to the breeze, “How could you?”
