Distinguishing Features:

Personality

Personality:
Some people find Fuyuko's single-minded focus uncomfortable. What seems charming and admirable when confronting a mutual problem quickly becomes overwhelming when there's no external issue to focus on. Fuyuko cannot deal with being bored, and this can make spending time with her exciting; she often comes up with new and novel ideas for things to do with her free time, or encourages the people around her to do things they’ve always wanted to do, but never had the courage or the reason to do. It can also make spending time with her exhausting. The idea of settling down and relaxing for a night is repugnant to her. When ill, she's a terrible patient who ceaselessly attempts to do something with her time. Fuyuko is constantly in motion, even when sitting down and watching a movie.

Some people don't like how she tries to control everyone and everything around her, or how she doesn't really get the emotional concerns of others. When she plans, when she talks, Fuyuko never considers emotions a primary concern; it's only later, when someone's upset with her, that she begins to process that the feelings of others ought to be a consideration. No matter how many times she's specifically asked to account for the feelings of others, she always forgets, because she doesn't consider her own feelings either.

Ruthless and pragmatic, Fuyuko believes the ends justify the means. Despite a preference for being honest in her everyday and a general inability to grok the sarcasm or wordplay of others, she's willing to lie, cheat, and defraud to get what she wants. Her willingness to play fast and loose with the law often put her on the wrong side of her Queen, Takara, but it also brought about a new period of prosperity for the Shingetsu; Fuyuko is proud of the work she’s done. While she thrives in structure, she chafes at limitation; the purpose of structure is to provide her with scaffolding to get where she wants to go. Structures that don't serve her get ignored with prejudice, often to deleterious personal results.

Likes:
  • Honesty - Honest people are easiest to profit from, firstly, so write that down. But honest people are also trustworthy, in a general sense, and useful to know, because generally you can tell when they’re being dishonest and use that to make some tidy profits. They’re also idiots, so on the level, Fuyuko finds it balances out. It’s like watching puppies: it’s adorable.
  • Stewarding - Having delegated away all the tasks of Stewardship that she finds boring, Fuyuko is free to focus on what she likes best: making money. The Shingetsu are a Great Clan as old as any of the others, just as descended from Amaterasu, but for whatever reason their profile is low compared to the other Clans. If she can fix that by making them the richest and most profitable clan, she’s going to do that or die trying.
  • Activity - Fuyuko always has to be busy. If she isn’t fine-tuning the wording on a trade contract or reviewing production numbers on some angle of Shingetsu business, she’s sparring, riding, or bothering somebody else.
Dislikes:
  • Wordplay - Not being terribly possessed of a creative mind in the way that Taceans honor creativity, Fuyuko is annoyed by people who spend too much time finagling over the prettiest metaphor or the nicest phrasings. She likes things that get the job done, even if they aren’t pretty and don’t easily drip from the tongue.
  • Being limited - There were plenty of times over Takara’s long reign that she told Fuyuko to rein herself in, or placed a boundary that Fuyuko couldn’t cross. This, Fuyuko feels, limited her ability to serve Clan Shingetsu to the best of her ability. She resents being told no when she believes she’s determined the best path, and holds grudges against those who try to gainsay her.
  • Sailing - She’ll do it if she must (and she often must, as Shingetsu land spreads to include many islands) but boats are too cramped for her taste. She’d rather ride.
Fears:
  • The depth of Ueda treachery - Despite the best attempts of Takara’s Triangle, they never were able to uncover the perpetrator of the attack that killed her. Fuyuko takes this as a personal failure, and still suspects an Izayoi hand in the murder. Yet she also knows that Takara had discovered something terrible about the Clan that had to be taken to Ishiyo immediately, and she suspects that the hand that dealt the killing blow may have, in fact, belonged to a Crane… and not one of the bodies now hanging off the pier in Ito’s bay.
  • Senility - Fuyuko’s mother is alive, but caught in the depths of a dementia that she will never emerge from. Despite filial piety demanding that Fuyuko visit and honor the old woman, she finds the expression of mental infirmity repulsive and horrifying. She leaves her mother’s care to the Priestesses at the convent where she’s cared for and slavishly follows the Healer’s recommendations to keep her own mind sharp.
  • The fall of the Clan - The Dragon Mother has it out for the Shingetsu, or at least that’s Fuyuko’s gut instinct. She stripped the Clan of a Sapphire Healer Queen, destroyed an entire vassal family and Court, and now has taken a young Queen and sent her away to Dena Nehele. This is the start of a pattern, and it’s a pattern that Fuyuko fears will form a habit. What if the wilting peony on the throne decides that the Crane should no longer serve at all, and wipes them out as she did the Ueda?
Craft Strengths:
  • Item Enhancement - Fuyuko has an Ariake blade that has been passed down from first daughter to first daughter in her family for generations. She is properly attuned to the blade, and so she is capable of sending a bolt of searing cold through it, freezing flesh solid and shattering lesser steel.
  • Witchfire - Fuyuko specializes in creating ‘cold fire’--it’s not any different in Craft cost or appearance, just instead of burning at a high temperature it burns at a lower one, which helps preserve candles somewhat.
Craft Weaknesses:
  • Witchlight - Tends to come out too dim to be functional. Fuyuko prefers witchfire and candles.
  • Fine Telekinetic Craft - Fuyuko can move things with her mind, but only in one direction, and only at one force: that force is hard. If she isn't intending to kill someone or break something with telekinesis, she's much better off just picking it up.

    Life Story

    Family:
Mother: Yuuko Sosuke no Shingetsu, White witch, 106AP
Father: Hideaki Sosuke no Shingetsu, Blood male, deceased
Brother: Ryuunosuke Sosuke no Shingetsu, White to Tiger Eye Warlord Prince, deceased (b. 136AP, d. 159AP)

Ex-lover?: Souta Yamamoto, Tiger Eye to Summer Sky Warlord, 131AP
Son: Kam Sosuke no Shingetsu, Summer Sky to Opal Prince, 172AP
Daughter: Takako Sosuke no Shingetsu, Summer Sky to Purple Dusk witch, 174AP

    History:
Fuyuko was born to Yuuko and Hideaki Sosuke no Shingetsu in 139AP. From the start she was a passionate, excitable child, and there wasn’t a single new thing that she was introduced to that she didn’t immediately love. Literacy? Amazing. Sparring? Delightful. She loved her parents, particularly her mother Yuuko, who was perhaps not a brilliant tactician, but a loyal Shingetsu captain with several victories under her belt by the time she gave birth to Fuyuko. With a Warlord Prince for an elder brother and a pair of warriors for parents, it seemed inconceivable that Fuyuko would not join them in the army.

At eight, she received her Birthright Rose. At sixteen, she was given her first personal sword. And at eighteen, after her Virgin Night… and later that year, the war ended. The Shingetsu were routed on the Ama, her father was dead, and so was her brother.

They were far from the only branch of the Sosuke, so there was no chance of their line dying out entirely. Still, Yuuko came home from the negotiations in Ito in 161 with a renewed focus on finding her daughter a husband, or at least someone who Fuyuko would consent to bearing children for. Fuyuko made her Offering and received an Opal. Around this time, Fuyuko met Takara no Shingetsu for the first time. They formed a friendship that would hold together until the end of Takara’s life, though Fuyuko didn’t yet join Takara’s Court.

For the next ten years of Fuyuko’s life, she served in the Shingetsu militias that put minor rebellions down and guarded Shingetsu trade caravans. Her mother had retired, gifting Fuyuko with the family sword and helping her attune it properly, but Fuyuko was angry that she’d never gotten a chance to defend her father, her brother, and her Clan in combat. It seemed the least she could do was put her rage to good use, preserving the peace that Takara and the Clan Queens had negotiated for in blood. She was so vehement, so violent, and so often locked in a cold rage that she earned a nickname among the forces that opposed Clan rule: the Winter Witch. When she wasn’t working the borders or the trade routes, she served as the quartermaster for Kitayama, ensuring that the guards were well-supplied. It was a more demanding job than she’d expected, but she found she was good at it; it kept her mind active and agile.

When she turned 32, Takara offered her the position of Steward to Clan Shingetsu. It was an unpopular choice, as there were older and more experienced witches ready to take the role, but the Queen’s word was law. Fuyuko wasn't unprepared: ten years as a quartermaster and warrior in Shingetsu service was more than adequate to prepare her for the role, and her mother was getting more and more insistent about the matter of children. A stable position would help with that. Besides, at a certain level of Tacean society, martial skills were just as important as Court skills. Fuyuko became Takara’s Steward in 171AP.

Now that she was settled, she had no reason to continue to put off her mother’s demands that she consider marriage or children. Fuyuko found an unobjectionable male and had two children by him. The first, Yori, was born in 172; the second, Takako--named for Fuyuko’s Queen--was born in 174. Once she’d done her duty and secured the line, Fuyuko dropped her unobjectionable male and turned her attention back to her work.

While settling in, her work had been proficient, yet uninspired. Once her children were in the care of their father and grandmother, Fuyuko could throw herself into the rebirth of Clan Shingetsu entirely. Her new verve brought her into conflict with Takara many times, but Fuyuko’s work was always just on the right side of legal. Whenever she got too close to the gray area, Takara would pull her back, and in this way--with some judiciously-concealed-from-Takara-smuggling courtesy of Fuyuko’s militia contacts--they brought Clan Shingetsu to a new golden age of monetary prosperity.

Her mother began to decline in 180AP. The once-sharp mind that made Yuuko a strong ally for the Shingetsu started to drop details, and then words, and then--by 185--even memories of recent days. Fuyuko was forced to leave Court for a year in order to handle her mother’s affairs and see her tucked away in a convent. It would have been correct for Fuyuko to take Yori and Takako back to work with her, but she had less than no interest in her children, and left them with their father for raising. Of course she sent money, but there was more important work to do than raising two children.

Still, it wasn’t enough. They had money, but no reputation, and in Tacea it was critical that one have both. Fuyuko turned her attention to that next, once everything was running like a well-oiled machine, but before she could begin to move on that, Takara was assassinated and replaced by Sakura no Shingetsu.

And it wasn’t like Fuyuko found Sakura objectionable. On the balance, she’d spent a fair amount of time helping teach the girl, and working with her on whatever matters Takara saw fit to delegate. The woman’s mother was odious and always had been, but that was a condition endemic to mothers. Fuyuko herself was not an enviable mother. She simply found Sakura to be… not Takara. The Queen Fuyuko served had had a will of steel and a heart of ice when necessary. Goal-driven and strong, that was Fuyuko’s Takara, and though Sakura was Takara’s chosen heir, she lacked something that Takara had had in spades. A sense of conviction? Maybe.

In Takara’s honor, though, she will serve Sakura as if she were Takara. When the Shingetsu are ascendant again, then Fuyuko can rest.

    Character in Play:
“I told you it was a mistake to cut that boy loose,” said Fuyuko to the portrait of Takara that still hung in her office. “I told you he was too smart to know when he was beat.”

The office of the Steward was empty at this hour. It was late in the night, or early in the morning, and the light had that peculiar grayish quality that was endemic to the Court complex in the north reaches of Kitayama. Ships were not yet scudding across the black-slate flatness of the harbor. Even the lights of the Golden had gone out. The yellow witchflame burning down her candles was only one of the windows still lit up in the Clan Complex, but it still provided a sense of amniotic stillness. The world without was cold and colorless, and the world within shone bright and warm.

Maseo no Shingetsu had been one of the last great arguments she’d had with Takara. Perhaps even the second-to-last great argument, but only because Fuyuko had begged Takara to tell her what was so important before she’d gone charging off to Ito on that awful day. But that was Takara: bullheaded and principled to a fault. She’d told Maseo to stand down, and the boy hadn’t, and it was sad that he would die but it was the natural consequences of crime. She had seen the value the Warlord could’ve brought and thought it’s not worth it. She’d given a direct order for Fuyuko to stay her hand and refuse to intervene.

Now there was a man using the Shingetsu name on the mainland, doing who-knew-what, causing who knew what problems. Maybe he was even poisoning the ground that Fuyuko needed to plow and plant to ensure that Shingetsu was the name everyone on the mainland associated with doing business in Tacea. She watched the still black ocean outside and ran scenarios in her head: Kill him? It wouldn’t be the first covert assassination she’d done for the Shingetsu. Seemed wrong to strike against a Shingetsu, even if he was only a male. Reach out to him, see what he was doing? Effective if it worked, but problematic in the extreme if it didn’t.

Maybe she should just hire someone to go check in on the Shingetsu name in Dena Nehele and Raej. Multiple someones. And if she needed to, she could call in a hit. Yes, that sounded functional. She needed to send more people out that way, anyhow.

In a way, it was better that Sakura ruled now. Fuyuko had far fewer compunctions about lying to Takara’s predecessor.

May I please have a general roll and five family rolls?

Then, with Gavin's approval, Fuyuko's ready for review. (I know I need to give her a picture, but I'm at work on my cell phone and I think we should all just be amazed I managed to get this far.)
