    Personality

    Personality:
Warlord Princes are violently passionate and passionately violent. As much as Eiji tries to be otherwise, the truth of who and what he is still shines through. People and things that Eiji loves are loved with his whole heart, and things that he doesn't love might as well not exist. He prefers actions over words, and while it's true he has some facility with language he would prefer silence to speaking. He is energetic and active, above and beyond what would be expected of other men of his Caste and Jewels. Instead of relying on books and anecdotes, he prefers to experience things first-hand, though his desire to dive in face-first doesn't extend to allowing the clients he is contracted to or the people he cares for to do the same.

His Caste is known for leadership, but Eiji is much more of a loner, and is generally reluctant to share of himself. While he is an excellent shoulder to cry on and always seems to know just the right words to say to be reassuring, he doesn't return the emotional vulnerability and for this reason has an incredibly difficult time keeping friends. The friends he does have tend to share activities in common with him--his sparring partners or the men with whom he practices Court dances--and not expect all that much emotional give-and-take. His closest confidants know he tends to be laconic. Even when an interpersonal relationship really requires a conversation, he would rather let it fester and ruin the relationship than address an interpersonal problem.

Like all men of his Caste, he is very protective of what is his. Unlike most men of his Caste, Eiji's career doesn't really permit him the space to define any given person as his. This inability to set down emotional roots is exacerbated by the revolving door of women he's expected to treat as if they hold his emotional leash. He feels that he literally cannot afford the space required to form an emotional attachment to the people around him: while he loves his career as a geisha, the debts he incurred in training hang heavily over him.

As a young man, with his aniki Masaie's help, he learned to refocus his stress and need to protect to his okiya. As such, Eiji is incredibly protective of the Amamiya reputation and the geisha who call Amamiya their home. His leadership abilities surface in his instruction of young men and women remanded to his care for combat training. He can't permit himself to form attachments with a particular woman, but students are different: he can, and does, go above and beyond when called to assist or defend his students. He is an exacting instructor, but a caring one, and the instructor-student relationship is one that deeply appeals to him in that he isn't expected to be emotionally connected to his students. It frustrates and annoys him when something that causes pain for his students and he cannot address it head-on, and he gets snappish and irritable when he can't address a problem his students are experiencing.

    Likes:
    • Being a geisha- Eiji takes great pride in his career, and finds it fulfilling. The role plays into his strengths as a Warlord Prince. He is in possession of a full measure of the caste's drive to protect and serve the women around him, which serves him well and guides him in his career. It provides him an avenue to channel his passion and intelligence, and gives him a role with set expectations to meet, all of which he considers great assets. It also provides him with more social mobility than he would have had as a boy from an orphanage.
    • Women warriors- Eiji understands other warriors better than he understands gentler castes. He has an easier time relating to his clients when they share an interest in the martial art, and prefers to take clients who are active in one school or another. In addition, he is sometimes called upon to spar with the children of high houses to help educate them in combat, which is probably his favorite duty.
    • Sweets- Eiji enjoys candy and sees no reason to be ashamed of that. The pragmatic side of him says it's because he can use the sweets for a quick burst of energy as necessary, which is an asset on long days. The part of him that cares less about what people think of him just admits he has a sweet tooth.
    Dislikes:
    • Rude clients- Sometimes Eiji gets clients who are pretty brusque. That's not a problem. What is a problem is acting like Eiji is required to take work from them, or being rude about his choices. He knows that being a geisha isn't being a prostitute, but there are clients who seem to think paying for his company means paying for sex. That's not nearly as bad as the ones who believe Eiji should provide services above and beyond his contract if asked, without charging more for the opportunity. Being a geisha is a job, and clients who discount that or try to weasel out of paying him his due are upsetting to him.
    • Being a Warlord Prince- It's the highest Caste in Blood society and there are men who would kill for it. Not Eiji. It is an enormous liability to be a Warlord Prince and a geisha for the same reasons it is an asset. His desire to protect can become cloying. His desire to possess women he is attached to can lead him to viewing the woman's husband or children as rivals for her attention. If he could flick his Caste on and off like a switch he would, but unfortunately it's on all the fucking time. And he has coping mechanisms for all this bullshit, but that doesn't make it any less bullshit to deal with.
    • Playing instruments- He's good at it, you don't become a geisha if you aren't, but he finds it inexpressibly boring. So boring. They say it teaches discipline, but he says it teaches frustration and boredom. He learns discipline in the sparring ring. Why does he need it from music?
    Fears:
    • Serving a dishonorable woman - Eiji is a man who defines himself by his work, and in the course of his work he is sometimes asked to do things he doesn't like and that his role does not permit him to refuse. And that's the risk he takes as a geisha, but he is consistently worried that the clients will ask him to do something dishonorable and unforgivable to another, and that he won't have the spine to tell them no.
    • Izayoi madness - Atsuko no Izayoi has never, to his knowledge, shown any signs of madness. But then, neither did her mother before she devastated two Courts. He doesn't buy in to the Izayoi line that Ishiyo's madness came from an external source, and that it was an attack on her mind that drove her to massacre her own people. He fears that the Queen he has signed a contract with has that same capacity for madness inside her, and that he will be forced to put her down or be put down himself. Or worse... that she will play the game more intelligently than her mother, and use him to quietly excise her enemies from the Territory.
    • Never repaying his debt - In order to retire or even to set out to seek his own fortune, he has to pay back his debt, but the number is truly astronomical even among geisha houses and it continues to grow, crippling Eiji's ability to plan for his future. Eiji's contract with the Izayoi Court will only pay it off if he holds the contract for five full years, and that's if he also sends his personal stipend to Amamiya House. Until he manages to reduce his debt load, he essentially has no control over his life or the decisions he makes.
    Craft Strengths:
    • Emotion Manipulation - Unable to learn a Warlord's skill at calming rage directly, Eiji has instead managed a strange and hacked-together version of it. With focus and familiarity with a particular female, he can jolt her away from the killing edge with what amounts to a focused 'shout' of calm. He can't use it well on women he doesn't know, and with men not at all. This skill makes him valuable in Court service, and was one reason the Izayoi selected him from the flower districts of Nara to serve in the Court.
    • Combat Craft - Eiji is trained to defend the women who contract him for service, and in the service of that role his okiya has seen him trained to fend off more than one opponent at once while maintaining awareness of his client.
    Craft Weaknesses:
    • Incite Rage - Such is his discomfort and annoyance with his Caste that he is incredibly loathe to spread the 'disease' of his hair-trigger temper with the men around him.
    • Death Spells & Finishing Kills - Amamiya House doesn't teach its geisha to kill, and accordingly, Eiji has never killed a man. Though his role as Sword of the Queen means he is essentially Atsuko's protector and executioner, he still hasn't sought out the education to make sure that what he kills through Craft stays dead.

Masaie Amamiya, okiya owner. Blood male. 56 (137AP).
Masamaru Amamiya, first son of the okiya. Tiger Eye to Summer Sky Warlord. 22 (171AP).
Tsujiro Amamiya, half-jewel of the okiya. Birthright White Prince. 14 (182AP)

    History:
Eiji's mother left him at an altar in Ito, and that's all he knows about the matter. His caste didn't develop until he was nearly two years old. Growing up in the orphanage was difficult for him; he was spirited and combative, constantly causing trouble. When the geisha Masaji Amamiya came to the orphanage looking for likely boys, the Priestesses were all too happy to pawn seven-year-old Eiji off on him.

Eiji did not do well at the okiya in Nara at first. He wasn't angry or disruptive, but his spirited energy was a lot to deal with for a small-time okiya. As a budding escort, he performed well in combat training and was perceptive of his lady's needs, often pre-empting concerns before encountering them. As a budding geisha, he... left a lot to be desired. Peace, restraint, and calm didn't come naturally to him. In fact, Masaji--the okiya father--was deeply considering attempting to sell him off to the Izayoi martial school by the time his aniki, Masaie Amamiya, decided to really buckle down with Eiji.

The pair of them grew quite close, and together they came up with coping mechanisms for Eiji's energy. They developed a style of escorting that played to Eiji's strengths, rather than one that played to the Amamiya reputation. With Masaie's help, Eiji was ready to become a full geisha right on time at the age of 21. He took the art name of Masami, carrying on the Amamiya tradition of the Masa ("become") character at the beginning of their name.

He worked as a geisha, entertaining at the teahouse and the fine homes of the high-class merchants, artisans, and aristocrats, for the next few years. He competed in the tournaments for the selection of the Dragon Queen's seven daggers, but each time placed just slightly out of the top seven. This inadvertently saved his life, and left him in a position to be hired on a long-term contract to serve in the Clan Court of the Izayoi after Ishiyo no Izayoi's rampage killed many aristo Izayoi males, leaving Atsuko no Izayoi with no choice but to fill her Court with commoners, geisha, young boys, and old men.

Eiji came incredibly close to earning a nomination as a Dagger for Yuki no Natsuhana and Ishiyo no Izayoi both. He placed in the top ten both times, cementing his position as one of the strongest warriors among Tacea's geisha. While this strength in combat was a major asset in his selection from the many, many geisha who clamored for the position of Atsuko's First Sword, it was Eiji's ability to force a woman off the killing edge through emotional manipulation craft that clinched the contract for himself and for Amamiya House. Eiji pretended to be thrilled to take the contract, but his relationship with Masaie (his aniki) and Masamaru (Masaie's heir) has become strained by his resistance to the idea behind closed doors.

Despite his resistance, his first long-term contract permitted him to finally put down roots as a Warlord Prince. He is blood bonded to Atsuko, and while he is not her First Circle, his possessiveness is still well-received by the Court. He has made friends with Atsuko's First Circle, most of them women from the Izayoi martial school who weren't present for the massacre, and when he isn't serving as Atsuko's Sword he's carved a place to help instruct the young men now pressed into service in combat. Though he wishes he was serving literally any other Queen, he has made a strong positive impression on the Court. He won't let down his guard, but he has adapted well to his role, and doesn't regret accepting it.

    Character in Play:
There were plentiful books about philosophy for the warrior, but they were mostly written in Common, and usually not on offer for the average male. As a geisha, Eiji had the ability to read these books; as a Warlord Prince, he often lacked the patience. Today, he was waiting for Atsuko to exit an appointment. With two guards on the other side of the door with her, the sum total of Eiji's responsibility to the Clan Queen of the Izayoi was to be present when she returned, and so he was reading. It was better than staring vacantly into the void.

He wasn't entirely sure how he felt about the book, but he knew how he felt about the whole situation he was in. It is said that the spirit of the age is something to which one can never return. True enough, since the budding golden age of Tacea had been crushed before it could truly bloom. Yuki no Natsuhana had abdicated her throne, and Ishiyo no Izayoi had gone mad, and now a man ruled the Territory. That happenstance was interesting, but in the end Eiji had no particularly strong feelings about it one way or the other. Should he be pleased? He was sure it represented something important to the upper-class males who could rally the support to take rulership positions. Maybe even to the males who hadn't been sold into their careers, and could change over into politics and rulership.

Not that he resented his house for plucking him out of an orphanage in Ito. Why would he? This way, at least he had a career. Living as an illiterate foot soldier for someone else's battles sounded a hell of a lot shittier than his currently rather sweet gig as part of a quadrangle of a Queen's Court, even if the Queen was potentially stealth crazy like her mother. Atsuko no Izayoi didn't wear the Red like her mother did, and to be honest, Eiji was fairly sure he could take her down if he had to. It was just that he didn't want to.

He closed his book and fanned himself with it, staring across the waiting room at some scroll on the wall. Probably from some northern monastery, he thought, squinting at it. A relic from a bygone age. The last lingering darkspark of that age's spirit, to which they could never return.

Eiji tapped the spine of the book against his chin, then vanished it. It wouldn't do to be caught inattentive.
