How Lady Shal United Once Warring Tribes and Defeated the Burning Sisters

Survival was a constant struggle in the Forests that would become Shalador in the days before Lady Shal united the warring peoples of the canopy. Many tribes - all made up of different races, traditions, and practices - fought over the patches of Rainforest that had not yet been consumed by the horrible monsters that had claimed most of the land.

Songs of that bygone era speak of tyrants of impossible power raging over the land. Three sisters – Yaretzi, Citali and Tlocatl - were witches of terrible greed, were driven by a sadistic need to sate a longing that proved impossible to fulfill. When they were young, the girls sacrificed their living hearts to the sun, shunning the Darkness in the process and leaving only the worst part of their nature to guide them. In return, they gained control over fire.

They each held massive territories within the jungle and consumed all in their path. These sisters turned even on each other, for the bond of family meant nothing to them after their sacrifice. Left only with hate, they claimed far ends of the verdant land. As they were equally matched in power, to combat one another would only mean defeat. So from their palaces they watched, took, and burned through the world in search of a conquest large enough to fill the hole made by the sacrifice of their love.

It wasn't until Lady Shal that these immortal abominations, mistresses of flame and fury, were brought to their knees.

Even as a young girl, she knew it was her destiny to end the dynasty of the Burning Sisters. The night of her Birthright Ceremony, an outline for what needed to be done came to her. It was a map for her life's grand destiny, and it was a gift greater than any jewel. All she had to do in return was follow it without deviation - and with complete dedication - until she had drawn her very last breath.

It took the Lady Shal her entire life to follow the plan given to her straight from the Darkness, but near the end of her life, the monstrous sisters were finally bound. Though they'd become immortal when they sold their souls to the jealous sun, Lady Shal, her Court, and the tribes whom she eventually convinced to unite around her and her cause, devised a way to make them sleep forever.

A great battle was fought, and powerful magics were wound by those willing to be linked by the Queen herself - all of those who held claim to jewels and who had the skills to do so gave all that they could in pursuit of their cause. Countless were lost and more still shattered, but in the end they made the very earth rise to swallow the terrible Burning Sisters.

Over the decades it took for the Burning Sisters to be vanquished, Lady Shal inspired a unity and togetherness in the spirits of a formerly divided people. Though not all was perfect, she saw her last wish fulfilled in the few years she had left after Yaretzi, Tlocatl and Citali were defeated. The many tribes agreed to a set of laws created by the Great Lady and her Court and so, in the twilight of her years, Lady Shal saw her great enemies defeated and her forest brought together in the process.

As a part of the negotiations, Lady Shal personally granted ancestral Territory to each of the surviving tribes who had joined her in the fight against the Burning Sisters. Never again would the people need to fight over resources or space; with the Forest's enemies vanquished there was enough to go around. Of course, peace has not always held perfectly, but for the most part, the Lady’s legacy was not forgotten.

Because of her, a motley group of warrior peoples, bearing different heritages with ancient grudges and similar, if not identical, traditions and practices woven around the same faith, came together under one banner to prosper for generations to come.
