Personality

Personality:

Hattori no Shingetsu is very much a Prince, organization and efficiency are absolutely parts of his character, and aspects that he leverages into nearly every part of his life.  Violence is never a stranger to a member of the Blood, and this is no less true in Tacea, the place that is most responsible for who Hattori is.  He learned early on that he had a fascination not only for the martial arts, but a strong desire to test himself and those skills.  Hattori was always willing to fight, because it was the best way for him to learn and improve.  Losing was never a concern, save for matters of life and death, and every failure was a chance to improve.  It was this competitive drive, this focus and rampant independence that set him apart from other members of his immediate household, and found him placed with an Okiya.  Hattori's competitive urge and his predatory nature were boons in the rigorous training of the Geisha, but it also caused his resentment in having his choices taken away.

He does not fade from a challenge, because he is not afraid of failure.  Failure is how one grows and improves.  Hattori's nature was not discouraged, but encouraged by his training, though he rebelled at the perceived loss of freedom.  When given a choice to make his own way, he chose to do so without any real hesitation, and it was from Kiyoko that he learned the thrill of behaving dangerously.  Hattori became a wanderer, and often based his choices on what was the most worthwhile, the most challenging to his abilities.  Decadence, while not a first choice, can be an easy one for Hattori to make, partiularly if there are thrills and experiences to enjoy that he has not previously experienced before.  He has made it a point to be open to new places and to new cultures, otherwise all of his travels would have been pointless.

Hattori tends to be controlled and reserved in company.  Morally, he is exceptionally situational, honor has its place, but it ought not to get one killed, especially in foreign lands where some concepts of honor are strange or non-existent. He can entertain, he trained for years to be able to do so.  Conversation is a talent that must be used, and since it is a perishable skill, he will try to put it to work now and again, to learn about a new location and to fit in.  The longer he spends in a place, the closer he can get to the people.  He would never openly admit it, but his Geisha training, for all that he resented being forced to undertake it, has smoothed the way before him for much of his life.  What those social skills could not handle, his martial skills could.  Hattori appears solid and confident to others, a man that clearly knows how to take care of himself, but not one that wastes time on bluster.  Actions will declare far more loudly than words, and where actions are not necessary, neutral words will most often suffice.  He is a loyal man, once befriended, and remembers well those that have helped him, and remembers still better, those that have crossed him.

Likes:
  • 1 Challenges; Hattori enjoys a challenge.  He will fight just to see who is better, and he will not be bitter about losing so long as it is a good fight.  The same is true of anything he attempts.  A foot race?  Sure.  Climb a sheer cliffise?  Absolutely.  Pearl Diving?  Of course.  Cliff Diving?  Surely there are pearls down there.  If he has not done it, and it is either a physical test or a mental one, he will gladly engage it.
  • 2 Tacea; Hattori has an appreciation for his home that can only come from having left it.  He has been gone for enough years to know that the rest of the Realm is lacking Tacea's allure.  Every place he goes, whether he enjoys it or not is compared and contrasted to Tacea.  He misses the pageantry of the place, and some of the Traditions he once considered annoying anachronisms are somehow better understood at a distance.
  • 3 Studying People; This is not to say that he is a social butterfly, he can be, but that depends on necessity.  Hattori has developed an appreciation for the broad array and variety of people in the Realm, long lived or short, Eyrien or Landen, every one of them in every Territory seems entirely unique.  Meeting and learning about them has been one of his favorite things about his somewhat self-imposed exile.  And should there be women of spirit, warriors, like the women of his home, well, for them he might play the social butterfly.
Dislikes:
  • 1 Bullies; Hattori trained all of his life in both the Arts and Martial Arts.  He has seen in other Territories how some men treat those that they perceive as weaker, purely based on surface assumptions; smaller and therefor weaker, artistic and therefor incapable of being dangerous.  All foolish assumptions where he is from.  The strong should not pray on the weak, they should be attempting to prey on the strong to prove themselves.  It is easy to be a bully.
  • 2 Boredom; Hattori is a man of action.  He has led a fairly exciting and some migth even say, a glamorous, life.  He detests being idle, detests having nothing to do, and one can only train so much.  Given the option between nothing and something, anything, he will almost always try to find something to do whether it is gambling in an clouded den of inequity, or have a lavish night in a Red Moon House.  Idleness and boredom are things to avoid.
  • 3 Mother and Father; Hattori understands why his parents sent him to the Okiya, but that does not change the fact that he felt betrayed by them.  It was not an unusual decision, or even a particularly difficult one for them to make.  They did not wish to discourage his nature, but neither did they have the patience to cultivate it themselves.  Instead, they sent him to become a Geisha, forcing him to be Shingetsu in name only.  He has not seen them since he was twelve.
Fears:
  • 1 For Kiyoko; he was her Escort for many years, without him, what dangers might befall her?  Someone could attempt to kill her, or worse, someone could discover her shadowy activities and despite her efforst to build the power and influence of the Shingetsu, she could be exiled from the Family she still loves  What would she do without his steady presence at her side?  He hopes she lives still, and lives well.
  • 2 Sandworms; there is a reason Hattori has not returned to Pruul.  He has seen one sandworm swallow half a caravan.  One sandworm was enough.  He will not return to Pruul without there being some kind of major necessity; someone he knows and cares for being in danger, or some strange Blood Magic that will command his death unless he sees the city of Tuon again.  A sandworm was implacable nature personified; one cannot fight a mountain.
  • 3 Endless Wandering; at some point, Hattori hopes to settle down again, to have a home and a place to put up his feet.  He worries that his self-exile will never come to an end, that he will be a stranger in a strange land for the rest of his days.  At some point, he will receive word that it is safe to return to Tacea, but until then, this fear grabs onto him on quiet nights, and will not let him rest.
Craft Strengths:
  • 1 Shingetsu-Ryu Density Control; Hattori has the Craft ability of his Family to alter the density and weight of his own body.  He can increase it to stand rooted and steady, but more often, he can lighten it so that he can perform maneuevers and acrobatics that would otherwise be impossible.  He can even dash quickly across the surface of water, or even up walls, due to the physics of surface tension, and his own altered density and weight.
  • 2 Shingetsu-Ryu Archery; Hattori is able ot combine Craft with the use of his bow.  Most often Hattori uses a measure of density control on the ammunition itself, making it lighter for shots requiring extreme range.  He can sometimes even perform minor course alterations while the missile is in flight, though drastic changes are not possible. Nudging a shot to clear a wall is doable, having it turn a corner, is not.  For shots requiring power, he can add something akin to a power bolt to the missile, an form of specific enhancement that allows it to strike like this Craft.  Once altered or enhanced, Hattori can track them in flight, and find them, again, enabling him to Vanish/Conjure back to him as necessary.
Craft Weaknesses:
  • 1  Power Bolts/Telekinetics; Without his Bow, Hattori is unable to make use of this Craft.  It is so intrinsically tied to his use of that weapon that without it, he cannot hurl this Forces Craft without it.  This is also true of small, fine use of Telekinetics, which is also bound up in his Archery Craft for course corrections of his shots.  He can use Telekinesis for large weights, and gross maneuvers, but nothing convenient or small, save for the course correction of an arrow.
  • 2 Prince Craft; Hattori has the natural inclinations of his Caste, he is organized and efficient, and would doubtless make a solid accountant or businessman, purely based on his training as a Geisha, but he has no exceptional talent for any f the Princely Crafts.  He knows efficiency when he sees it, but he cannot fine tune it to a magical degree.  He can be diplomatic, but that is based on skill, and other forms of craft, and he does not have the sight to see weakness in an argument or an object, and once again must fall back on training to do things the direct and mundane way.

History:

Hattori was born into the Shingetsu family, and thus raised as befit a Male and a member of his Family.  His Caste was identified, and training in the Family Arts began early.  He was taught the Male cipher, as was proper, and as a Prince, raised into the family’s mercantile interests.  From the start, Hattori believed that he was destined for the simple life, the perfection of numbers in a ledger, the simplicity of trade and barter and making the wheels of bureaucracy turn freely.  The boy that he was seemed content with his lot, right up until the moment when his Uncle gave him his first yumi, and began to instruct him in the ways of the Shingetsu-Ryu school of martial arts.  Hattori might not have the violent urge that a Warlord Prince was born with, but he did have a competitive edge, and he discovered an enjoyment for the earthy physicality of hand to hand martial arts, and Shingetsu-style archery.  Perhaps it was the logic of martial arts, or the fact that there was a sort of efficiency and precision to the forms and movements that echoed the mathematics that moved the world, but Hattori found new energy for these studies.

It became clear that while Hattori would have the necessary skills to assist with the Shingetsu, it was not his focus.  The family saw his enjoyment of the combat arts, and his constant drive to excel in those fields.  In an effort to focus what his Mother and Father perceived as his natural talents, he was sent to an Okiya for training as a Geisha.  This would break his ties with the Shingetsu, but it could also mean that the Family could contract him from time to time, if he did not find his way into the Territory Court.  Such an outcome was not undesirable, due to the honor and prestige that would be associated with such a placement, but that was considered an outside possibility..  This decision was made for him just before reaching his 12th year, having begun his tutoring and martial training when he was very young. Hattori was not happy about this decision.  He was given over to an Okiya favored by the Shingetsu in the Flower District of Fukuoka.  By the time his training was done, Hattori understood that his ties to his family would be severed not only by circumstance, but by the choosing of a new name.  This troubled him deeply, though given no choice in the matter, he never gave voice to this dissent.

Hattori was a touch too proud not to rise to the challenge of Geisha training.  He did not share his displeasure at being force down a very particular path, whose destination was all but determined.  If he did not serve the Territory Queen, he would doubtless serve a Queen, and at that time, it was as far from his desires as a goal could be.  In what could be seen as a small display of rebellion, Hattori used what spare time he could find to continue his own martial training in elements of Shingetsu-ryu, determined to sharpen the skills learned from his Family.  Hattori’s competitive drive kept his training moving forward, as grueling as it was, it did not discourage him, quite the opposite.  It might not have been what he wanted, but he could not deny the value in it.  His displeasure was buried under the rigorous training, and make no mistake, all aspects of Geisha training required greater effort, whether it was martial skills, the arts, or entertainment.  Every single day was a new challenge, and that was something Hattori grew to respect.  However, he had no desire to serve in a Court, and he did not look forward to the end of his time in the Okiya, it would mean that still another choice in his life was being taken away from him and placed in another’s hands.  Hattori did not want to be in the Court of Ishiyo no Izayoi, not matter what prestige it earned his Family.  She was an anachronism, and Hattori had hoped to see the world thanks to the mercantile interests of the Shingetsu.

Fate, in its fickle way, offered him once chance at making a choice of his own, even if it began a new term of indenture.  Kiyoko no Shingetsu made him an offer.  She would pay his marque and allow him to leave the Okiya, but in exchange he would work for her.  Hattori accepted her offer, and left behind the life he would never have chosen for himself, despite how well he truly did, despite receiving his Offering surrounded by respect and even affection, the resentment at his core had not completely faded.  Kiyoko, at least, gave him the choice.

Hattori was not sure what he would be doing for the Black Widow, and despite being, once again, indentured and indebted, the Blood Opal Prince felt good about his decision.  At first, Kiyoko seemed content to make use of his training; tea, conversation consultations involving certain ledgers, and then things began to evolve.  Kiyoko asked him to train with her, to keep her skills fluid and sharp, and Hattori agreed.  He also used the opportunity to tweak his own knowledge of Shingetsu Family Craft, something they both put to use in their sparring sessions.  Hattori acted as both Escort and Trainer, spending most of his time in the Sapphire Black Widow’s company, so much so that he learned about her shadowy operations early on, and never once wavered in his service.  In time, tea and sparring led to something more intimate between them, and they became lovers.  Kiyoko both challenged him on a personal level, and on something of a professional one, sharpening his personal skills and, from time to time, putting his refined archery to good use in the service of her plans and goals.

He was, for years, almost always in the Black Widow’s company, and found her penchant for for risk taking and her enjoyment of doing something dangerous very nearly as thrilling as she did.  Being her lover was not without risk, as a Sapphire Black Widow certainly came with some aspect of risk, especially when Kiyoko was involved with illicit trade that he was well aware of.  Hattori believed that he would be by her side for many more years.  It was no longer about paying off his debt, but about staying close to someone that pushed him to excel, to adapt, and to understand that change can be as necessary as breathing.  Tradition is well and good, it is the framework upon which the rest of the house is built, but it should not be a barrier to innovation and improvement.  Hence, it was no surprise that Kiyoko saw to it that Hattori became literate in more than simply the Male Cipher.  Every tradition started somewhere, and new ones can and perhaps even should be made.

Hattori had found a good life, one he believed would see him well into the foreseeable future. Of course, fate had other ideas.  Unmei seemed to catch up to one no matter how often one tried to avoid it.  Hattori had dodged his, and lived a very well, but fate handed him another decision, another risk, and he chose to protect Kiyoko’s interests.  Kiyoko understood from the start that what she asked of Hattori was no small thing.  He could sense that she had some sincere conflicts in asking it of him.  He was the only one that could do what was necessary to protect both Kiyoko and Shingetsu, along with their interests.  There was a sense of inevitability to it, but perhaps that was merely Hattori’s subtle bitterness, or his sense of Kiyoko’s sincere belief that not only was this sacrifice necessary, it was so dangerous, he would have to leave Tacea for a time, perhaps for an entire generation.  His lover did not hang him out to dry; he was given a stipend, his travel arrangements well made, and he was sent quietly on his way.

Dena Nehele was his first port of call, and the first place he had to get used to, essentially, not being in Tacea anymore.  He had been warned about the different cultures beyond his home, but experiencing it for himself was another matter.  By sheer good fortune, while visiting the capitol, he stumbled over an authentic seeming tea house, and walked in to discover that it was just that.  There were elements in it that spoke of someone well-trained in the Geisha arts, and it was an island of the familiar in an alien landscape that his education and training had not quite prepared him for, unless he meant to fight his way through the streets.  It was also where he ultimately met a kinsman, in Maseo, and then immediately forced himself to forget that any such person still existed.  The Tea House provided a place for Hattori to acclimate himself to a place that was definitely not Tacea, and while he enjoyed his stay, in a couple of weeks, he was moving on, seeking new places to explore.  If he could not go home, he might as well see what there was to see.  Before he left the Tea House, he had a missive sent to Kiyoko, coded and under the guise of a business communique, wherein he promised to send a letter from time to time.

Determined to travel, to take the risks he could not have otherwise taken, he set out to explore Terreille.  Pruul came next, though it was a brief flirtation.  He joined a Caravan making its way to Tuono, and was regaled by stories of the Sandworms.  Hattori was comfortable enough about not using Craft, he was a good enough fighter and an exceptional shot, so that was never a worry.  He made it to Tuono, enjoyed the people and the exotic locale, absorbing the local culture without bias, and even going so far as to keep a travel journal, albeit in the Men’s Cipher.  Pruul made for an interesting journey, but it was not where he wanted to stay.  Everything moved a bit more slowly in Pruul, but ultimately he arranged to travel into Hayll, making frugal use of the good and accounts that Kiyoko had arranged in his name.  In his travels, he found ways to make and lose money, usually selling his skills as an escort or a guard, and occasionally even calling on his training as an entertainer.  Hayll proved more hospitable than Pruul, at least every step in the place was not a chore.  He spent a fair bit of time there, before moving onward, and taking the long journey to visit Raej.

Hattori spent a year in Raej, sending Kiyoko three letters in that time, never sure if they reached her or not.  He moved on to Dhemlan then, enjoyed some time in the Library, which stunned him to see.  He claimed to be scouting around the world for business opportunities, and he had made it a point to visit Dhemlan and the sights.  That lasted a few months, before he returned to Raej, and lost several months, before he decided to take another long journey into Shalador.  He acquired a horse, proper travelling gear, a book about Shalador, and hit the road.

Character in Play:

Highwaymen.  How parochial.

Hattori no Shingetsu hoped he was using that word correctly.  It meant, he believed, having a limited or narrow scope, and that certainly seemed true of desperate men deciding to waylay travelers.  There was even a makeshift roadblock whose parts consisted of two wheelbarrow, so they could part the block and open the way, as though there were nothing more than a legitimate tollgate on a toll road.  It was not the first time the Tacean Prince had dealt with would-be robbers, and he doubted that it would be the last, if he meant to continue traveling.  Hattori was at the rear of a line of wagons full of trade goods.  He had not been hired to guard this particular caravan, though he had offered.  However, he was not going to stand idly by and be mugged, either.

He put his heels to his horse and rode forward, if only to be seen.  Hattori was an armed man, he had two of his yumi, both were strung, though the large of the two was in a sleeve attached to his saddlebags, the shorter was already in his hands.  He had a straight blade on his back as well, a simple Shikomizue that looked like a short staff or walking stick.  Hattori considered his words for a moment, making sure that he could speak them without sound too much like a foreigner, "Will you be robbing from everyone?  Or just the caravan?  I am not affiliated with the merchants, and would very much like to move on."

The merchant looked scandalized, and the bandit leader confused.  The man then shook his head suddenly, "No.  Everyone has to pay!"

Hattori sketched a shallow perfunctory bow from his saddle, "Understood."  And then turned his horse to return to his place at the end of the line.  He drew on his Jewels to check for Craft defenses, and found nothing he needed to worry about.  He drew an arrow from thin air, conjuring it to his fingertips, and with his knees, encouraged his horse to sidestep to the left.  Once he had a clear shot, he kissed the missile with power, and sent it streaking into the bandit leader.  The arrow hit him high in the chest, punching through cartilage, between ribs, and into the heart, and landing with enough force to drive the man back several stumbling steps before he folded to the dirt and collapsed forward dead, held upright for a momet by the arrow, before flopping onto his back bonelessly.

That set a panic off among the brigands, as one by one, Hattori took them out with carefully aimed shots from his bow.  When he was done, he sighed.  Since Tacea, he had put his skills to work with more regularatiy than he would have back home, he was certain.  He had trained and fought, and practiced, but he had more of a body count in the Realm at large, than he did back home, he was certain.  Not that he kept track.  Hattori was not one to notch his bow or keep a score.  There had been a bit of scuffle, but no one in the caravan got more than a flesh wound.  Hattori then rode forward, and pushed aside the barriers, before riding through them.  Someone called out to him, and the Blood Opal Archer stopped, and turned his horse.

"Don't you want to search the bodies?"  One of the merchants suggested, "If there is lucre, you deserve a bit of it, don't ya think?"

Hattori considered that, and scanned the area on his side of he barrier.  He noticed a chest that someone had foolishly used for cover.  He rode over to it, pulled the stick from his back, and used it to flip open the lid.  He leaned way over and pulled a respectable sack from it, and gave it a shake.  Coin and jewelry from the sound of it.  He shoved it into one of his saddlebags, and slid the stick and its hidden sword into loops meant for it on the side of his saddle and tack.  "Hey!"  The merchant protested, and seemed about to say more until Hattori shifted his bow back to his left hand, and looked at him in silence, that one gesture full of meaning.  Hattori then rode away, intending to keep the coin and return the heirlooms, if he could, in the next town.  He thought it wise, as a stranger in a strange land, to test the good will of the locals only so far.  He could afford to build a little positivity, and still make a profit besides.
