* Plot Informaton for Scelt

Scelt is a Territory in turmoil and peace is tenuously held together by the Sceltic Queens. Rivalry between the Clans errupted into horror for the Territory that resulted in many dead, on both sides, and culimated in Clan Sheane being outlawed in the Territory. Further troubles plague the Territory in a variety of manners - Landen villages are raided, Courts are attacked, and no one seems to be safe.

Woven Chaos

Saskia stared into the glassy and vacant eyes of her latest project and forced herself to accept that this pawn was yet another failure. The last few she had tried to convert into a sleeper agent for the Lace Initiative had been unmitigated disasters. It was risky to keep trying to pull potential pawns from the ranks of the Court of Killan or one of their banner Clans. Thus far she had managed to break, or entirely burn out a member of Clan Doyle, a low ranking Guard to the Court of Scelt, and a mercenary Captain.

Trying to achieve the level of success that she had managed with Brighe Devlin had proven to be an impossible task to replicate. After Brighe’s death the Court had closed ranks and made capturing any of them near impossible.

Still, news and gossip from the Court of Scelt flowed freely through her various channels to provide her with unique insights into how she might approach further destruction for the Territory Court. Even though the Sheanes had been blamed for Brighe’s death, or at least the Sapphire Black Widow that Saskia had expertly setup for the blame, it had not started another battle between the outlawed Sheane Clan and the Court of Scelt. The violence she had hoped to incite had never manifested to her frustration, and Loreniel had survived without any true physical harm. Saskia had hoped that the witch would have been able to get closer in order to truly sink the blade into her Queen. She figured the ineffective attack was a byproduct of Brighe’s loyalty forcing her to not succumb entirely to the instructions planted in her mind by the Lace Initiative.

The Lace Initiative’s other plans continued to gain momentum with Saskia having trained up a small handful of Black Widows to perform the mind-altering techniques that she had perfected when launching the Lace Initiative. Yet they weren’t ready to unleash that level of monumental chaos, not just yet.

Saskia wanted to see Loreniel Killan suffer first, before her true plan came to fruition.

One of the Black Widows she had left in charge of the training for the Lace Initiative entered the room without much fanfare. Saskia would have been annoyed if she hadn’t sensed the urgency in her Black Widow colleague. “Missive, Lady Rowe.” The lighter jeweled Widow handed over a scrap of blank paper and immediately left the room, not once looking at the husk of a Prince that laid inhumanly still on Saskia’s worktable.

Saskia placed the paper on a different work surface and drew a dagger from a sheath at her side. She made a deep cut across her palm and allowed the blood to flow freely until it covered the scrap of paper that had been delivered. As soon as enough blood had covered the paper she used a touch of her Sapphire to stop the bleeding on her hand and waited for the Craft on the paper to react to the psychic touch of Saskia’s mind and blood.

A moment later the words provided a very clear message: “Queen is pregnant. Rumors are Brogan Devlin is father.”

The news she had received from the Territory Court was juicy, and too good to be true. Immediately she knew she would have to tell Brennan Devlin all that she knew. She was excited to see what his reaction to this news might be and could barely contain her excitement A pregnant Queen was a vulnerable Queen and that could make their job much easier if it meant delivering true heart break to the bitch in charge of the Territory.

Without a backward glance she left her workroom, with the vacant husk of a living corpse on her work table untouched. A Sapphire shield was settled over the room while she moved towards where she instinctively knew she would find Brennan.

*Darling, I have news you’ll want to hear. Meet me in our chambers.* Her mind voice fairly purred with a promise of satisfaction across the thread she started with her lover.  There was much to discuss between them, but the first element of satisfaction would be hers when she could see his reaction to such delicious news.

Then they would have to find a way to remove some of the obstacles that stood between Saskia’s Gray Jewel and the Queen of Scelt. Eamonn Sheane would likely be neutralized by the news alone, and Brogan Devlin’s attention settled on the Queen in a different manner. It was Quinn Higgins that posed a greater problem with her constant presence in and around the Queen and the damn dark Ebon Gray that she used as a shield for the Queen. Her silent and constant presence was perhaps the hardest one to shake for the Lace Initiative, but Saskia had several ideas worth pursuing. With Quinn out of the picture, and with both Brogan and Eamonn distracted, there would be an easier path to the Queen.

*Darling, I have news you’ll want to hear. Meet me in our chambers.*

Brennan’s hand froze midway through the sentence that he was writing as Saskia’s thread came through. He evaluated the tone of her mental voice for a second, then returned to his writing. She didn’t sound like she was in the mood yet, but Brennan knew that the Gray Jeweled Black Widow could go from business to pleasure in a snap. All the same, he finished writing his acceptance of his sister’s invitation to tea. He’d been surprised to receive the missive from Honora, but when he thought about it, it served his plans (and Saskia’s) to respond with civility and warmth. He needed to rebuild his reputation in Scelt and few things would do that faster than the good wood of a Queen or two. It was something he’d been thinking about pitching to Saskia, so he was glad that she called for him.

But now he wanted to hear this news she believed was so important.

He handed his response to one of the Black Widows he passed, asking her kindly to see that it got to Lady Dunne’s Court. He flashed her one of his best smiles, still unsure if the woman before him would kill him for his presumption or just make him pay in some other way. Given his...thing...with Saskia, the woman took the letter and left it at that. Brennan turned and headed off toward the chambers he shared with Saskia feeling a little bit lighter. Each step in that direction, though, sharpened his hunger. Sharing Saskia’s bed was a demanding role, but not nearly as demanding as working with the Lace Initiative. It challenged and stimulated his mind. Everything they did, every success they earned, no matter how small, was just one more rung on the ladder to reshaping Scelt into the Territory that it was always meant to be. Someday soon, these sad people with their small minds would be forced to reevaluate the lies that they’d been fed and start thinking for themselves.

That day would likely be the day following the utter and complete destruction of Loreniel Fucking Killian.

He opened the door to find Saskia waiting for him. He walked in and pulled her into a deep kiss, the one he’d been meaning to give her all day. He wanted to give her more than that, of course, but she’d called him here for business. They had plenty of time to enjoy each other later, once Saskia finished converting her newest disciple. Brennan almost felt sorry for the guy, but not really.

Hey there, beautiful. So...what’s the big news? Did it work? Is our guest prepared for his mission?” Brennan asked.

The standing members of the Lace Initiative, Saskia’s pet project, had bristled when she’d brought a man into their inner sanctum for a purpose other than brainwashing him into a pawn dedicated towards their cause. It had been the first time that a man had entered their walls without falling prey to the work that they had been diligently working through for the last three years.

In that time Saskia had only recruited a half dozen other Black Widows to her cause and they were carefully vetted before being read in on the dark manifesto she had instilled for the organization. Each had their own reason and motivation for joining such a cause in the landscape that was Scelt, but all were Sceltic born and Sceltic raised. After all, it took that deep seeded bigotry within the Territory to breed the right kind of agent that Saskia needed committed to their cause.

Brennan had shown the right motivations and commitment to the cause from the start but the other Black Widows had not been swift to embrace a man in their ranks, and especially one with connections to Clan Devlin. Where Black Widows might have found a man useful (in the bed), they had given him a wide berth sexually since Saskia had made it abundantly clear that he belonged to her, and her alone.

She had never denied being extremely possessive.

Brennan arrived promptly after her summons, smart lad, and presented her with a passionate kiss that made her toes curl and promised to do considerably more before their meeting was over. The raw sexual magnetism between the Black Widow and Prince was powerful and she enjoyed have a regular bed partner who took considerable effort to learn exactly what she liked and how to please her in the best possible ways. And for her part she certainly had made it worth his while.

“He’s almost there, but I may need another day or two. Bastard is stubborn. I’m slowly breaking him down though.” The glint of pleasure at her impending success shone in her green eyes as a dark smile crossed her lips, still damp from his impassioned kiss.

“No, what I have to share is much more satisfactory. Perhaps even salacious.” The smile turned properly feral, like a cat about to pounce on its trapped prey and tear it limb from limb. Another man might have been in danger of becoming such prey with Saskia, if Brennan hadn’t proven himself to be so useful in all the best and important ways – both to Saskia and to the Initiative.

She drew a finger along his jaw as she pressed the length of her voluptuous body against him. With deliberate slowness she leaned forward, pressing her cheek against his, and licking her tongue against his earlobe. “The Queen will be vulnerable for some time.” She whispered and leaned back to watch his eyes and emotions as she delivered the next piece of news. “She’s pregnant. And can you guess who the father is?” Saskia doubted that he’d guess Brogan, no one in the Territory would have guessed that the lovelorn Warlord Prince would ever find love with the Queen who had always kept him at arm’s length. Fuck, the bitch had even exiled him to another Queen’s Court like some low-level diplomat. No, she suspected that the first guess would be Eamonn Sheane – it would have been her own first guess, after all, given the tumultuous and public relationship that they had been dodging for near on five years.

Brennan grinned as Saskia pressed against him. She was good at her work; Brennan was optimistic that their guest would be ready to fulfill his new duties sooner than they expected. He was making his own inroads into the Territory Court, but those methods were slower (although more fun) than what Saskia had in mind. Maeve’s need for attention and friendship would have her baring her soul to him in good time. For now, he focused on Saskia’s words as she reported that there was more salacious news to report from the Court. He wondered if, perhaps, Loreniel Killian had decided to throw herself off a cliff and spare Scelt decades of her rule? It was more wishful thinking than anything.

Loreniel Killian would never willingly hand over her power.

His hands trailed down Saskia’s sides, resting at her hips. He stopped just short of grasping her ass, knowing what would happen if he pushed the envelope too quickly. They’d often ended up in bed without intending it, only meaning to talk about some new piece of information from her sources or her visions. He didn’t mind it, but she was being (mostly) professional right now. He respected her leadership and station within the Lace Initiative and showing that respect would keep his louder detractors from trying to whisper in her ear against him in the near future. They already disliked him for his closeness to her. He couldn’t give them reasons to question his loyalty or her judgement.

But the words she spoke to him caused his eyes to bore deep into her own. Surprise was most apparent on his face, but that settled into an expression of grim determination and ice-cold calculation. He stepped away from Saskia, looking down at the floor. She’d seen him deep in thought before and this was the prelude to that state of mind. He’d be pacing soon enough, though he often tried to avoid that just because he didn’t like making her jumpy.

The father doesn’t even matter, really. I bet it’s that traitor Eamonn whelp, anyway. She wouldn’t whore herself out to anyone else. But this is good news. Her focus will be split and there’s opportunity here.” Brennan said.

Nine months without her jewels, without Craft, and no visions. Then months of recovery if all goes well. Then she has to split her focus between ruling and bein’ a mother. Unless she loses one or both of those things.” Brenna said.

He paused in his pacing to look at Saskia. He could see the wheels turning in her mind through her expression. She wasn’t easy to read but his skill was growing with every moment they spent together. She knew that he hated Loreniel for neutering his family, so delivering the message in person was important. But there was something in her gaze that hinted at more. She’d asked him to guess who the father was, and now Brennan’s mind was turning. Why not just tell him outright, unless….

What aren’t you telling me, Kia? You see something in your webs about this?” he asked. His tone was playful but he wanted to know what she was hiding.

The news she possessed was so deliciously scandalous she was desperate to blurt it out and spoil the surprise. Saskia had already done the math, and based on her own intelligence reports, the Queen must have gotten pregnant with the child very shortly after the attack by Brighe Devlin. It was a baby conceived of despair and torture, not one truly conceived of love and happiness. From the ashes of Saskia’s plan had risen the promise of something even more nefarious and deliciously vengeful.

Saskia waited for him to talk through the implications of the Queen’s pregnancy but skipping over the most important element. He claimed not to care about who the father was, perhaps because he assumed it would be Eamonn. His brother would be broken hearted in a scenario where anyone took the Queen off the marriage market, even if enough visions had shown her marrying Eamonn Sheane one day. No, the beauty of the situation meant that they would have an opportunity to be the ones who broke Brogan’s heart, not Eamonn.

That would bring Brennan a tremendous amount of pleasure.

And Saskia did so very much enjoy bringing the Prince pleasure. This would satisfy another craving for her lover, one that was far more challenging than their usual antics.

“I don’t need webs to see this, pet.” She said with an indulgent smile. “My sources indicated that the child is not Eamonn Sheane’s, as everyone would have expected. No, indeed it is not.” With a smug smile that spoke to the Black Widow’s pleasure in delivering the news she paused just a second to savor the moment. She wanted to forever remember the look at Brennan’s face when she delivered the next staggering part of the news she had to impart.

“You are about to become an Uncle.” Saskia watched his face with rapt pleasure and enjoyment, eager to see the progression of emotions pass through his gorgeously intelligent eyes. And waited for him to realize exactly what that news meant.

You are about to become an uncle.

Seven simple words. Brennan gaze turned to Kia, searching for any hint of deception in her face. The smile, the confidence in her words told him that she was telling the truth. She knew his feels toward most of his family members were complicated but Brennan was very, very clear about how he felt about one particular member of his family. Eamonn Sheane wasn’t the father of the baby, meaning that Brogan was.

His brother, Brogan, the Gray Jeweled golden boy of the family, was going to be someone’s father. Loreniel Killian would be that baby’s mother.

Brennan felt a swell of pity for that child. It was there.

Then it was gone.

Brogan and Loreniel had finally given in to whatever was between them, likely as a result of Brighe’s death. Loreniel probably saw it as comfort in a dark time, but Brogan...oh, Brogan. This was his chance to strengthen his tie to his Queen, the woman he loved. Despite knowing that he could never be hers, not completely, his older brother would use this baby as a means to lay claim to his Queen. Nevermind the stress and rancor it would create among her other males, Brogan wanted what he wanted and he wouldn’t stop until he got it.

But why did he deserve that kind of happiness? After all he’d done, why did he deserve to have a child with the love of his life? Why did Loreniel get to have a child after she’d visited death and destruction upon so many people?

She didn’t.

He didn’t.

We can use this.” he said at length, as the idea came to him.

Two of the most undeserving people of all time get to have a child and rule Scelt? No. No, this can’t stand. They don’t deserve a blessing like this. Clan Killian doesn’t deserve this. After all they’ve taken and all of the people they’ve ruined, they don’t deserve this.” Brennan said, his voice turning to ice.

Someone should remind them that everything has a Price. It’s time that Brogan and Lady Killian paid theirs.

The icy tone of Brennan’s voice sent chills down Saskia’s spine in the most delightful way possible. There had been no doubt in her mind that he would come to the same conclusion as Saskia had – that the quickest way to fell the bitch Queen and her pet Warlord Prince would be to see that the child was not born.

“We can’t murder the child outright.” Saskia said out loud. She’d already considered this option while she had been coming to convey the news to Brennan. “It would garner too much sympathy and support from even her loudest critics.” That type of tragedy would rally too many of the Clans to Lady Killan’s cause. It would bring too much scrutiny down upon the Lace Initiative. Saskia had been painstakingly careful to cover her tracks thus far. She needed this one incident to remain separate from the future she was working towards for her own organization.

“But a miscarriage would be devastating.” Saskia suggested.

“A Price extracted from the Darkness for the crimes committed against Scelt. There would be sympathy but without a single person to blame it would be short lived, and Scelt would move on long before Lady Killan or Prince Devlin.” There was a time in Saskia’s life where she had wished she been born a Priestess so that she might better understand the Darkness’ plan on a deeper level. For certainly it had to have a plan.

Saskia had never hidden her true darkness from Brennan. In this they were well matched. The deviousness that inspired her darkest creations was something she was proud of, though society would fault her for it.

Agreed. A direct attack would draw down the power of two Grays and an Ebon Gray upon us. No matter how good we are, we can’t stand up against that.” Brennan said, rubbing his chin thoughtfully while the hairs of his beard prickled his thumb. No, they needed to play this smart. Saskia’s idea had merit. A miscarriage was not only less suspicious, but it had the added benefit of making Loreniel and Brogan blame themselves for the loss. They’d blame themselves and, hopefully, each other. They’d drift apart until they were strangers.

There was no greater pain for a bonded male than separation from his Queen.

It’s a worthy Price. She’ll need time to recover. She’d have to choose a Proxy to carry out her duties. If that happens...you could find a Queen more sympathetic to the Lace Initiative’s goals among Scelt’s Queens. Or you could make a Queen more sympathetic. That’s wholly up to you. But the main sources of our opposition would be grieving their loss and blaming themselves.” Brennan said, looking to Saskia.

If we’re lucky, they’ll never get past it.” he said, smiling at the Gray Widow as the future spread itself before him. He didn’t need to pretend that this plan horrified him, or that he struggled with the idea of hurting his brother. The only thing about this plan that bothered him, really, was that Brogan would never know that Brennan was the architect of his suffering. He would suffer and suffer and just think that Mother Night was punishing him for his own failures.

Brennan would just have to learn to live with that.

He moved close to Saskia. He wanted to take her, right now, and show her his appreciation for the cruelty of her mind.

You are sexy when you’re planning to hurt someone. Have I ever told you that? I’d love to tell you that in our bed, if you have time.” Brennan said, leaning close enough to kiss her.
