Playing with Laughing Wonder
« on: May 15, 18, 08:53:10 PM »
Locale: Backdated 192, Late Summer. Hammer and Anvil Stage.

Naia had been at the Hammer and Anvil for just now most of Spring and half of Summer. Given that she received regular pay, she assumed that her trial run for the year had been going reasonably well at the Anvil. The stage wasn't being used for anything in particular except for having been cleaned within the last two hours (Naia could tell due to how well the floors shone without witchlight), so she had crept quietly in, deciding to try out the acoustics. Dressed in cream trousers with a long embroidered white tunic that fell just to her knees, and her usual tall heeled black boots, there was a bit of a safety feature with Basic Craft that she'd been dying to try out on the stage.

Two stop measures; one for potential dizziness in a turn while dancing, and another for stopping potential tripping over feet or items. She'd set down several ropes on the floor of the stage, a turned over bucket, and a small pile of wet sand inside a limited space. Primarily aware such kinds of Craft could have other mundane implications, the Blood Female was almost jittery with excitement. Once the items were placed, she turned away from them, and began to dance a swift jig across in the direction of all the items.

Aware of how dangerous her activity appeared Naia had posted a sign at the top of the stage stairs both in front and back which read: BASIC CRAFT EXPERIMENT IN PROGRESS, CAUTION PLEASE. She grinned all the same when her foot slipped on a rope then promptly the prepared Craft propelled her upright rather than an immediate fall. Replacing each item, Naia began to repeat the activity two more times, making sure she came very close to falling as possible.

"This could be good. Mayhaps even for a gag. Especially a gag," she commented to no one, neither expecting or not expecting company. Either might have been fine, and maybe better to have a few opinions. Hands on her hips, she danced through the pile of sand, and even all the way to the bucket with the final charges of the prepared Craft expending as a bright laugh poured out of one of the newest Hammer and Anvil performers, known as the Ingenue. Naia gave a bit of a yawn before pulling an apple from her pocket and polishing it on her tunic. Hopping down and sitting, she decided on a snack break. Craft took effort; her mother and sisters were practically constantly eating, and with what she could do, it was plain enough as to why. Carefully concentrating after eating a few bites, Naia focused on each item, returning it to the original place she'd put each in for her experiment.

Lissy loved the stage when it was empty. Oh, she loved it when it was full too - but.. there was something about a fresh, clean, empty stage that to her was like a blank canvas. She liked sitting in the wings, or on the catwalk, and looking down or out at the vast expanse of it from interesting angles as she wrote in her notebook about characters or detailing various little scenes.

Today, she'd finished up her work early just so that she would be able to do just that. It had been a task too - not because she'd had a while lot to do, but rather because she'd had to be careful to avoid her mother so as not to incur more chores or just her mother's critical eye. Narlha was a boisterous, caring woman.. but she was also a woman with a lot of opinions - many of therm about how her daughter should be living her life, making herself useful, or making herself marriageable.

Alissa never knew whether to gag, shudder, or whimper at the thought. She was a romantic, sure, what young woman her age wasn't one in some capacity? But her mother had this whole plan for her that involved her making her descent and marrying a well-to-do Lord or something.

But Lissy didn't want that. Lissy wanted to write. She wanted to be a part of the theatre. And here, laying on her belly on the catwalk above the barren stage, she was exactly where she wanted to be.

And... so, apparently, was Lady Naia.

Lissy paused in her scene as the newest member of the troupe made her way onstage, the darker skinned woman having been with them for only a season and a half or so. Curiously, she let her pencil rest on her notebook, tucking it beneath her chest to afford herself a better view of the odd things that the other woman was doing. Why was she laying things all about the stage like that? That wasn't safe by any means... And now she was.. dancing? And -- oh no!

Lissy's voice caught in her throat and she pushed herself up to her knees as she saw Naia head right for some rope on the floor... but the other didn't fall. She almost did. She definitely looked like she was falling... then she just returned to upright and went on with her dancing.

The mousey playwright found herself smiling as she continued to watch, smothering a giggle behind her hand here and there with the almost-falls and the jovial way that Lady Naia made her way around (and through) the obstacles she'd set for herself. The trick, or experiment, or whatever it was, seemed to come to an end though and as the woman below moved to sit at the edge of the stage, Lissy too shifted to return to her writing. However, as she moved her pencil rolled and dropped right off the edge of the catwalk - landing point-down in Lady Naia's sandwich.

Alissa blinked, then blushed, leaning out a bit and looking down - two big round eyes peering down from the darkness.

"S-sorry!"

Thankfully, said sandwich had only been recently removed from a satchel, and was still wrapped. A bit of hearty brown bread, sharp cheese, thick tomato slices and a fresh leafy green was really all that was on it. Naia tilted her head, apple core still resting in her fingertips. It had been a pretty thick sandwich, even if relatively simple of form, so while amused that there was a writing utensil standing up in the greater half of her meal, she was more curious as to where the item had fallen from. Then came the whisper, which the performer was better able to follow after finishing the apple and folding the seeds and core bits away into a smallish psychic cabinet.

Bright golden eyes with a hint of brown flicked around the stage, then finally, up. Of all the places to find to sit, she approved of the solitary nature of the location. Gently, Naia dislodged the pencil, it really having caused little harm at all, if any. "I see I have disturbed some creativity," came the remark in response.

"If you would like, I am happy to share. Fresh from the kitchen quite recently, assuming you like cheese and tomatoes. Elsewise I have one more apple. They are very good." With an animated push of her hand, Naia moved the contents of the stage one by one into the bucket; the ropes, the wet sand which resolved itself into a handy ball, leaving the stage as neatly as Naia had found it a little while ago.

"I have even rescued your writing utensil. It is quite safe, I assure you," she jested, curious as to what might send a person hiding above the stage, though a little too polite to ask the question. She wiggled the pencil in her hand, watching the direction she had noticed the eyes and heard the startled sound that seemed to have been a quiet and startled apology, but Naia wasn't one to assume until she knew for certain.

With a crook of her finger, the bucket with its objects wiggled its way slowly toward Naia.

"I love a little Craft. Helps get a job done, but still lets me work well enough with my hands."

’I see I have disturbed some creativity.’

Lissy’s cheeks flushed and she was responding with a hurried “More like inspiring!” before she recognized the playful nature of the other woman’s tone. He cheeks turned an even brighter shade of pink, the color a bit blotchy and breaking its previous restrictions to spread down her neck at the admission. “Um, I mean…”

Her eyes widened a bit as Naia moved a few things around the stage with a touch of Craft, the embarrassment giving way to admiration. Sure, she was able to use a little bit of Craft, herself - her ma had made sure of it - but she wasn’t exactly confident with using more than a little bit at a time. Definitely not enough to move things around as much as the woman below was doing - especially not those fancy spells either!

The offer to join her took the young witch by surprise, and had the color returning - and she was about to shyly assure her that she wouldn’t want to intrude when Naia held up the pencil - which she would, indeed, need to retrieve.

“Oh, um, okay… I’ll be right down!” A pause, then. “Th-thank you!”

Quickly, but with a certain amount of care, knowing that it could be dangerous up on the catwalk if she wasn’t careful of where she was going, Lissy headed back to the scaffolding and then down the ladder. A minute or so later, she was stepping shyly from the wings and heading toward the other witch and her pencil.

“Sorry for disturbing you,” she said with an apologetic smile. “You were really amazing though. I mean, not about eating your sandwich.” She winced and blushed brightly. “I m-meant, with your performances… and using your craft. Did you make those spells yourself? The ones that stopped you from falling?”

Naia's sculpted black brows lifted even as she smothered a chuckle at Alissa's response. She too had her own occasional moments of embarrassment, and certainly wouldn't be one to point fingers at a fellow artist. It would have amused and flattered, knowledge that the other Blood Female had considered her Craft extraordinary when it was far from, but even small compliments of the kind were worth tucking in the pocket for a bit of emotional and talent polish to improve the mood. Keeping her perch, Naia watched Alissa carefully get her way down from the catwalk, and though she had prepared just in case of an accident, it eventually was apparent of not been necessary. As such, Naia relaxed until Alissa had taken a seat near.

Waiting until the other woman might take her seat, she first handed her the pencil, before vanishing the apple core after wrapping it. A full laugh eased from the performer while she swung her feet upon the edge of the stage. "I do not feel disturbed," Naia remarked in casual tones, "though I appreciate the courtesy." Rather than remark about the sandwich, the woman unwrapped it, and gently separated a small, thick square, then pointed to the rest of the wrapped sandwich; the bread was still warm to the touch. "Half for you, Lady. I repurposed them, I suppose is the better term of what I've done. Most Dhemlanese children can manage these kinds of Basic Craft, but they are typically for different applications than this one upon the stage."

"So, what were you writing about up there? Pardon my curiosity of course." Golden eyes with a touch of brown were as alight as Naia being interested.

Lissy accepted the half-sandwich with a small blush. She was feeling too shy at the moment to decline, and she was hungry anyway. If Naia was still hungry once they were done she could easily scuttle back to the kitchen to fix something up for her.

“Really?” she said, her tone sparked with interest as Naia explained that many children in Dhemlan can use the kind of Craft that she used across the stage. She wanted to ask more about Dhemlan, but she bit the inside of her cheek around the questions. Alissa had never been further than a few miles away from home her entire life. She let herself get lost in all the plays and the books she read, and many of her own writing took place in just about anywhere other than a tiny little town in Scelt.

She half choked on a bite of the sandwich, however, as Naia’s question caught her a little off guard.

“Oh! W-writing? Me? I wasn’t… er. I mean.. it was nothing…” Her cheeks flushed as she stammered around her excuses, then quickly shoved another huge bite into her mouth to avoid having to elaborate and to also give her some time to come up with something else to stay. This was a stall. She hoped it worked.

“Ahem. Ah, so, Dhemlan! I’ve never been there.” Obviously. “C-could you tell me more about what it’s like? Are there a whole lot of people in Dhemlan? Or.. or at least, I mean, wherever in Dhemlan you’re from? Was it a big city? Or more of a smaller town…?” Her cheeks were still a bit pink and she was a bit nervous about having suddenly asked so many personal questions - but she couldn’t take them back now and it wasn’t like she wasn’t curious. She was. She just hoped Lady Naia didn’t take offense!

Noting Alissa's difficulty, Naia restrained herself rather than ask the other woman too many more questions until after she was done eating, as well as very gently, after seeking a non-verbal permission, pat her back to soothe from the near choking on food. While alarmed at an apparent inability to eat and speak at the same time, the Blood Female could identify with her fellow. After all, she had been testing out various Craft methods to avoid tripping over her own feet on stage.

Even though part of it was supposed to be a gag, there had been some realism to the initial thought that spurred the plan in the first place. A slow smile moved over the Lady Garcia's face, as well, due to the other woman's attempt to hide her skill. Seemed odd to her, doing so when part of a playhouse, but she let it go. Bemused certainly, at the strange sense of shyness? Modesty perhaps or maybe it was a preference for privacy. That last she could believe as much more probable. So while she wasn't remotely convinced, it was out of politeness that Naia pretended to allow the stall to be effective. It was much too obvious to do anything else and she figured it was better to not badger the poor woman into fleeing.

"Perhaps around twice as many people as Scelt, give or take in total. However, that's to be expected given the difference in size of available land, I suppose." Her nose wrinkled while tilting her head as she thought about the matter for a few moments. "The most remarkable thing about Dhemlan is that the Landen and Blood populations are closer to equal than almost any other place I can think of off hand. It is a place, not terribly different from any other when you set aside the long life. However, I am but half Dhemlanese," she remarked with a laugh.

"My father was from Scelt, but he's been gone for more than half my life," remarked lightly, "his reputation and memory are why I am here. And perhaps the weather," Naia said as a little of a jest. Given that she didn't share her father's surname, nor too obviously his looks as Long-Lived features tended to dominate any pairing, she left out for the moment that her father had been the famed poet, playwright and actor, Lord Brennan Connors simply because she preferred to manage on her own merit. While harder enough to do because there were plenty of people dabbling in the arts in Scelt on the whole, it meant a little more when someone later found out her background after they had enjoyed a few performances and delighted in her beforehand.

Lissy took another small bite and chewed slowly as the other woman answered her question in good humor, describing Dhemlan and it's differences to Scelt. Her eyes widened a bit as Naia revealed that her father was from Scelt but had been gone for a long time. Her mouth opened slightly, but she stopped herself and snapped it shut again - having been going to ask how old she was (since you really couldn't tell with the long-lived) but realizing just in time how rude that was. It was already rude to ask anyone something like their age - and she imagined it was even more rude on the scale of the long-lived. Particularly from someone who was short-lived.

A light blush touched her cheeks at the almost-misstep and she took another bite. Once she'd swallowed it down, she gave a small shrug and looked out over the vacant seats where an audience would sit on show nights.

"I've never been away from Scelt," she admitted. "Well, I've really never been away from this general area. Mama and me came to the Hammer and Anvil when I was a kid and we've been here ever since. Before that, the town near the estate we worked for wasn't all that much different from this one." She gave a sweet, sheepish smile. "I think I'd like to see the world a bit more, you know, some day. I read all these books and see all these shows about different people and places and things and it makes me want to really see them." But she knew she wasn't brave enough for that. She could barely face her own mother on a good day. Not to mention that she still hadn't even told Epona that she was the one sending the anonymous scripts.

If she couldn't even do that much, how was she supposed to go on her own adventure?
