One for Two, Two for One
« on: Dec 30, 17, 06:43:11 PM »
Alis skidded to the ground mid run from horseback, leaving her gelding to pant in the courtyard as she raced inside her foster parent’s home full speed, slowing only once she reached her suite. She tumbled in, pulling off her muddy boots and tossing them one after the other into a corner, hopping in place and swearing. Her shirt was peeled off next, then her riding pants. These were tight and she nearly got tangled in them, but off they came, tossed on the floor like the rest of her clothing as she dove towards the shower.

“Ow, ow, ow, ow.” She huffed with each breath until cold water poured over her, cooling the sing of the nettles that had turned her skin red when she had accidentally tumbled through them. “Ahhhhh.” Alis sighed, shoulders relaxing as the stingy-itchy feeling began to face. Her knees were scratched and scabbed over from...something...yesterday, and there were bruises between her thighs from too much time in the saddle, but being out on the land was the only way she had gotten through the last month since finding out that her father had died, and since coming away from her Offering with the Sapphire.

From downstairs she heard Donella shouting that it was time for dinner. There were guests tonight. Distant friends of the family here to pay their respects for Nolan and to visit with Alis’s foster parents. She had been told this morning to not be late, so maybe it was a good thing she had encountered those nettles. They had gotten her back with a big of time to spare.

She reached for the soap and began washing. When she was done she called in and heated a towel, and another one for her hair, and walked out into her room. It was a mess, as it always was, clothes flung about, desk covered in stuff, books in dissoray on the shelves. Alis meandered over to her wardrobe and pulled out a blue skirt with yellow stars embroidered along the hem, and a shirt and sweater to go with them in the same general color scheme. Donella would be pleased. She was always complaining about how Alis did not make the effort to look the part of a Queen. Alis always replied that in this house she wasn’t a Queen, she was a daughter, but that never flew.

Her hair would never dry naturally, not with the sun setting, so she used a touch of Craft, which left it frizzy, but warm around her shoulders. Alis pulled it back into a thick, messy braid and tied the end with a ribbon, before calling in her Jewel chip earrings in the shape of stars, and her Sapphire to lie over the turtleneck.

Finally, she pulled on a pair of big, fuzzy slippers, because fuck shoes.

She left her room and took the stairs to the dining room two at a time, so used to being late that she didn’t have a concept of how to move when she wasn’t. Her sides and calves still itched, and she scratched absentmindely as she pushed her way into the dining room.

“I’m here!” She called, although she doubted anyone had missed her arrival, considering there were only Donella, Boyd and Kester sitting around the smaller table in the room, that looked out over the courtyard, playing cards.

“Just in time. Lord Banik, his son and granddaughter should be here within minutes. They sent ahead to say they were almost here.” Boyd said, patting the seat next to him for Alis. She sat down, nuzzling up to the man who had been as much of a father to her as Nolan. He scritched her hair fondly and Kester delt Alis into the game.

One hand later, which Alis of course won, two horses with three riders trotted into the yard. Boyd went out to greet them while Alis helped Donella and Kester set the table. While she was in the kitchen, the young Queen heart footsteps and voices enter the dining room. She walked back in and her eyes met a pair surrounded by wrinkles.

The basket of bread in her hands dropped out of them as her blue eyes widened, then her nostrils flared and she looked beyond that first face to one that looked much the same, only younger, and if she had been holding a second thing, would have dropped that too. As it was, she stumbled, having to catch herself on the kitchen door.
“Alis?” Kester asked, his young voice full of concern.

But Alis, for the first time in her life, didn’t hear him. No, she had ears and eyes only for the two men standing at the other end of the room.

For Tibor, traveling with his granddaughter, Naomi, was easy. She was excited about all the new things she could see, and her Yellow Birthright Jewel was still new enough that she liked to show it off to everyone she met. Unfortunately, what was not easy for Tibor was traveling with his son, Ivor. He knew where he went wrong with Ivor and it seemed that nothing would ever be able to change the bridge he burned there. During the time that he had been raising Naomi, Tibor had resigned himself to doing right by her, rather than making things right with his son.

Sometimes it felt like they had nothing in common, which may or may not have been true. Tibor wasn't around enough to find out and now Ivor resisted every effort to do so now. So he was surprised when his son agreed to come with him for this part of the trip, but it was probably because it included visiting family friends. Or maybe he just wanted to spend time trying to make Tibor upset. Either way Tibor couldn't decide if he was glad about it or unhappy, but it would be good for him to know some of the people Tibor knew.

Tibor greeted Boyed with a smile when they arrived and helped Naomi down from the horse even though she could get down on her own! Ivor followed along after they got the horses settled and Naomi held Tibor's hand in a sudden bout of shyness at meeting a bunch of new people. Her other hand was clutched around her Yellow at her chest. Tibor looked down at her and then up as someone else walked into the room.

And then it was like the world stopped. He froze, unable to breathe for a moment. Tibor had never felt anything like this, but he knew what it was. He had long since given up on finding his Queen. Surely if he hadn't found her by now, despite the numerous courts he had served in, he wasn't going to. And yet, here she was. Alis stumbled and Tibor took a step forward, but stopped when she caught herself. Ivor was directly behind him, looking a bit more dazed than Tibor, who blocked his progress across the room.

"Papa?" Naomi tugged on Tibor's hand. "Are you alright?" She looked to Ivor next, whose expression matched Tibor's. "Uncle Ivor?" Then she looked back at the Queen with a frown. It was Tibor who snapped out of it first. He cleared his throat and gently squeezed Naomi's hand as a comforting gesture and then let go.

"Lady Clery," he said, taking another couple of steps forward, around Naomi, who stayed where she was. Tibor bowed as protocol dictated and when he straightened, the room finally came back into focus. He glanced around, vaguely noting that Ivor had copied his movements, and then he turned his attention back to Alis.

So much for a quiet job in a court's outer circle.

Her head was spinning and something inside her was crying out in fierce joy, rejoicing in a way she had only ever felt when deep in communion with the land on a warm spring day. It was the heat of new beginnings, the thrill of the first step of a journey. It was everything she had been missing and never considered. Of course, she knew about Queens and Bonds. She had been trained on how to handle them when the moment came, but now all that training seemed so inconsequential. She didn’t need instruction to know that these two men sang to her heart, that their lives were in harmony to hers.

“Lord Banik,” Alis said, stepping forward, eyes fixing first on the older man, and then the younger, unable to settle on one, unwilling to let either slip from her sight for too long. Her attention was so fixed on them that she ran into the edge of the table with an audible thud, her toe colliding hard with the leg.

“Oh fuck!” She exclaimed, hopping on one foot as she bought the other one up to her hip, clenching her hand over the smarting toe. Great. She had just bonded her first males and they probably thought her a complete klutz. Not that it was inaccurate. Resolutely she put her foot back on the ground and looked up.

“Could the gentlemen and I have a moment alone? Mum, Da?”

Donella and Boyd looked between themselves, then Donella took Kester by the hand and wordlessly the small family left the room. Alis pulled a chair over with Craft and fell back into it, legs a might shaky, and directed a wobbly smile at the father and son.

“Hi, I’m Alis, although I suppose you already know that.”

Tibor jerked as Alis ran into the table, and he took another couple of steps forward with his hands outstretched to make sure that she didn't fall over from all of her hopping around. He was amused by the curse, though. Behind him, Ivor looked on with a slight frown.

"Papa?" Naomi looked up at Tibor while Alis's family left. He looked at her as she took a side step in the same direction they had gone and nodded to her. Naomi turned and started walking out of the room, but she only made it a couple of steps before Tibor spoke.

"Behave," he told her. She turned back around long enough to stick her tongue out at him, then picked up the pace on her way out the door, though a giggle could be heard once she was out of sight. The fond smile on his face lingered as Tibor gave his Queen his full attention then.

"Yes, I've known your family for quite some time now," Tibor said with a smile that crinkled the corners of his eyes. "Although you were a little girl the last time I passed through here." Tibor couldn't believe it had been that long. Ivor cleared his throat and took a step forward. "Ah, my son, Ivor Banik," Tibor introduced him, although it probably wasn't necessary. More than likely her family had told her who all was coming, but it felt like an introduction was needed anyway. "And that was my granddaughter, Naomi," Tibor added.

"Can we get you anything?" Ivor asked even though they were in her house. "You look a bit shaky."

Alis watched the child go and approved heartily of the stuck-out tongue. Smart girl.

Aaaand that was all the reasonable thought she seemed capable of at the moment. She looked up at the two men and gulped. “It’s...a very, very great pleasure to meet you both. I just wasn’t expecting…” She took a breath, then squared her shoulders. “I’m sorry, this is the first time this has happened -well, i guess the first and second, all at once- and I just wasn’t quite prepared. I’m not exactly sure what I should be doing. I don’t have a Court or anything to ask you to join, or really anything I’m doing right now…” She was kind of in limbo, to be honest. Alis’s training with Blodwen had come to an end and her father, who was supposed to have given her direction as to where to go next was gone. She had to find some way to talk to her half-brother Desmond, to see if he had any better clue as to what her future was supposed to look like, but that hadn’t happened yet and now she had these two men and they both called to this part of her that she hadn’t even know was there and...and…

“Honestly...I could use a hug.” She said, giving in to the desire to get closer to both of them and also the need for just a little tiny moment of stability in the sea of uncertainty she was currently floating and getting quite seasick in.

"I can't say that we were prepared, either," Tibor said in a warm tone. At his age, Tibor certainly was not expecting to find his Queen, especially considering how many courts he had served in throughout his life already. He figured that if it was going to happen, it would already have occurred. And, he certainly wasn't expecting to bond to such a young Queen. That was definitely going to be interesting, especially with his son bonded to her as well. Tibor suspected Ivor was not at all pleased by that fact, even though he still seemed a little dazed by the whole thing.

"Of course," Tibor nodded and then both men were moving towards Alis to embrace her. Ivor's form was rigid, and Tibor assumed this was due to their close proximity. Ivor avoided getting close to him whenever possible. Tibor was willing to set aside their own issues when it came to their Queen; he hoped that his son could manage the same. The hug was like a balm to Tibor, and it seemed to have the same effect on Ivor, who relaxed a bit.

When he pulled back from Alis with a grandfatherly smile on his face, Tibor used Craft to pull chairs towards each of them because he suspected that Alis might still need to sit down. Even if she didn't, he wanted her to do so anyway. He supposed they could have sat at the table, but he wanted to be close enough to her that his hand could rest on her knee to prolong the contact.

"We- I am not concerned about a lack of a court," Tibor said, hoping to set Alis's mind at ease. He realized he shouldn't speak for Ivor. "Whenever you decide to form one, I would like to join."

"I would as well," Ivor said quickly.
