Distinguishing Features

'You let those violent, armed blood into my theatre?

Spoiler:  Detailed Description (click to show/hide)
Personality

Personality:
Epona Corcoran's defining feature is loyalty. She knows, as too few people do, that it is not family, fame, wealth or even innate talent that matters. It is loyalty. It was only through the steadfast loyalty of her friends that Epona survived her childhood and youth. Her difficult past had both led to her skill as an actor, and honed her ability to judge a man or woman's character to a hair's breath.

She herself disdains all stereo types, destinies and fates. She believes that each person is unique. Epona truly judges people entirely on their own merits, not accepting that breeding, a name, or an affiliation define a person. She certainly has no real belief that an accident of birth, like Caste, so drives the Jeweled Blood.

Being Landen, she is not as much a slave to her instincts as the Blood are. She can see clearly when a Blood would be driven to passionate rage, brutal retaliation, or even mindless obedience.  She has a knack for finding the hidden gift or natural aptitude in others precisely because she doesn't  believe in destiny. Her long study of the actor's Craft has gifted her with a clear insight into many personality types, and the deeper motivations that power people. Not being Blood she is spared the constant exposure to the violence and bloodlust inherent to the race; while she saw hardship as a child and on the streets, she has never killed nor knowingly witnessed a death first hand.

Epona has not had an easy or safe life; it has left its mark in her tendency to fret and worry, and her need to always plan for the worst. While prone to anxiety and a bit high strung, she is not loud or obnoxious. Her early life on the streets developed her sensitivity to mood, tone of voice and body language to a level only found in the desperate and persecuted, but her actor's training gave her the ability to consciously analyze the information her instincts provide. She is both a trained observer of the human condition and has an actor's nuanced ear.

Epona has a beautiful laugh, a powerful loyalty to her people, and a determination to succeed. While sweet and honest, she is neither naive nor foolish. An innovative thinker, unafraid of new things, she imported a famous Dhemlan director. She retains a gentle sense of humor and a true sense of compassion. She has seen enough of poverty and desperation to never wish to encounter those things again. With this in mind, she is careful of whom she hires, choosing the more desperate and motivated over the merely more skilled. No one at the Hammer and Anvil has a past to go back to.

But now they have a future.

Likes:
  • 1 Missfits. Epona knows what it is to be desperate. To be hungry and scared. She chooses to hire people who either have shared that past, or who do not fit in to the role society dictates for them. Her misfits, refugees and artists have two things in common. They are deeply loyal and this chance at the theatre means everything to them.
  • 2 Arthfael. Her best friend since before the death of her parents, Arthfael is the closest thing she has to family. While their relationship profoundly changed when she inherited the Theatre and promoted him to Manager (though like many Blood he often slips and calls it Stward), it has not merely survived but thrives on the change.
  • 3 Voice. Epona's sure consolation and best weapon is her command of her vocal cords. From convincing screams of terror to exquisite musical master pieces, her projection is notable. She can both be heard over a restless crowd in a large theatre, and has assorted ways to shatter glass. Her clear Soprano led to her first role in the theatre, and song remains her first love.

    Dislikes:
  • 1 last minute changes. From a sick cast member to crew members swapping shifts without warning her, Epona hates unplanned, unanalyzed changes. Her scripts, blocking, costumes and sets are carefully measured and weighed, their final form established weeks before opening night.
  • 2 My Lady. Epona is a young, unmarried Landen woman who grew up a peasant. The new title rests uneasily on her shoulders. In addition to feeling like a fraud, she is well aware that at that any point the Blood family who used to own the theatre might simply take it back. While many of the cast and crew know her well enough to adhere to the standard informality of most theatre troops, when they slip and call her 'my lady' it still makes her want to cringe.
  • 3 Bullies. From Jeweled Nobles mindlessly causing mayhem to the crime lord she pays protection money too, Epona hates bullies. Normally politically minded and cautious, such restraint can escape her in the face of bullying.

    Fears:
  • 1 The Jeweled Blood. 'You let those violent, armed Blood into my theatre?' This pretty much encapsulates her feelings for the nobles of her world. Privileged, they can commit crimes like rape and murder against her people without fear of reprisals. Raised to think violence and death are the accepted way to deal with rejection, anger or hurt, they are terrifying when in close proximity to Epona or those she cares about.
  • 2 Poverty. After the death of her parents, she and her sister were homeless. Their only income were odd jobs at the theatre and begging. Afraid of the Noble who had killed their parents, the girls refused both charity and a place in the orphanage. During their time on the street, dogs and rats were a constant threat. To this day, even well-mannered dogs make her nervous. And rats can reduce her to tears.
  • 3 Public Speaking. Epona is a skilled actress and performer, but has not yet mastered public speaking. When she has a costume, a character, and a role; when props, settings and lights shield her from the audience, this fear is no more then a tension that adds depth and beauty to her performance. But directly addressing a group of people who have focused all their attention upon her unadorned self makes her feel vulnerable and exposed. As she is now often schmoozing sponsors or glad-handing nobles this fear has gotten worse. Epona has some soft candies that look like a throat lozenge, taste like bog water and willow bark, but work swiftly to spread a comfortable emotional numbness across the senses.

    Strengths:
  • 1 Reading People. From assessing the mood of an entire audience to reading the energy of a crowd, Epona's skills allow her to skillfully adjust to the situation around her. On a more personal level, she has been able to choose good people for her theatre.
  • 2 Voice. Her voice is exceptional, even in the theatre world. Both the beauty of her voice and the shear, ear-splitting volume she can achieve. She has even learned to bounce her voice around the theatre for some truly amazing special affects.

    Weaknesses:
  • 1 Protocol. She doesn't know Protocol or Blood Law, but even if she did, it wouldn't fully protect her. She is merely a Landen, and yet she both is a Landowner, and has hired Blood to work for her. Strictly speaking, this goes against both Protocol and Blood Law; she owns her theatre only on sufferance. As a Landen, she is the legal equivalent of a child. At best, someone to be guided and protected but not someone with the right to either give orders to Blood or deny a member of the Blood something they want. At worst, she is a mere object to be tolerated if useful or removed if not.
  • 2 Violence. Untrained in any formal fighting, she tends to freeze when violence breaks out. She has never killed and would be horrified and deeply affected should she be required to do so (assuming by some miracle she was able to). While willing to defend those in her care, she will start with talking, bribery and coercion; she will always choose the least violent path to long-term safety. Unlike the Blood, to her life is precious, adults solve problems with words, and violence is a crime. It is morally wrong to hurt another person just to get what you want.

History:

Spoiler: Timeline (click to show/hide)
Epona Corcoran was born to a poor Landen family, devoted to the stage. Her grandmother had been an actress and Courtesan, residing at a Red Moon House when she didn't have rolls of sufficient merit to afford her own place. The family's only unifying factor has been the stage; Elona claims at least ancestor from each open Territory in Kaeleer; her exotic coloring reflects this. Epona's parents both resided at the Theatre, working as a makeup artist and stage hand, respectively. She was raised in and around the theatre. Her education was handled informally by the cast and crew.

She has a great love of the performing arts, and is herself a better dancer and musician than actor. Yet she adores the stage, and has a keen gift for both anticipating what people want to see, and managing her Cast and Crew.  She is young, and unused to her new status as a land owner. Her grandmother won the Theatre in a game of cards shortly before her own unexpected death. While she sometimes expects reprisals from the Blood family who owned it while she was growing up, she has had no contact with them since inheriting. She knows almost nothing about Clans, and even less about the Jeweled Blood.

Her education was seen to entirely by the theatre, its cast and crew. She learned to read on ancient plays, to write filling out cue cards. Her knowledge of history is patchwork, half-real, half-legend. She prefers high fantasy and classic plays to modern pieces. Her knowledge of Protocol is based on the exaggerations of literature and the few crisis points that erupted during the past two years. She was raised to fear the Blood, yet her best friend since childhood is one. Despite her general refusal to embrace prejudice and either the Clan hierarchy or the Blood Caste system she has an ingrained reverence for the Harvest Queens of the Blood.

When she was only eight her parents were murdered by a jealous Prince while they visited her grandmother at the Red Moon House. She and her sister were immediately ousted from the Theatre, but were both unable to live at the Red Moon House and too afraid to go to the orphanage. Her older sister, just 15, was an accomplished dancer. She made just enough to keep them fed but not enough for a room.

The two Landen girls were not entirely abandoned; a young, restless Blood lad who did odd jobs looked after them. Arthfael, a friend from the Thearte, was homeless. A fact he had carefully concealed until they joined him on the streets. Three years later, Epona's older sister got hired full time for the Chorus at the Hammer and Anvil. Arthfael, Epona and Elieza all squeezed into a tiny room at the theatre, but it made all the difference. Dance, music and acting lessons were once more a part of their daily lives. They settled in and worked hard.

When Epona was 15, and just starting with the chorus herself, the madness of Blood Protocol and violence descended upon the Blood family that owned the Theatre. Patrons, cast and crew of the Theatre were targets as often as the Blood nobles. Epona's sister was slain during the madness, and it only eased after grandmother won the Theatre on a bet. The Blood family that had owned the theatre surrender the deed and left the area, but no written agreement exists as to the change of ownership.

Epona remains a great dancer, often taking the dancing scenes for her female leads. She has a notable voice, with astounding projection and intensity. While a good actor, she despises public speaking and usually declines speaking rolls.

For two years her grandmother attempted to run the theatre. She was smart, canny and a smooth politician, but not greatly suited to the roles of either manager or owner. Between the three year feud of the previous owner and her own situation, attendance declined. Quite unexpectedly the volatile, aging beauty passed away. She left all of her estate to her only living relative. The year Epona took the theatre she hired a Dhemlanese director. The investment has paid off in increased custom, a larger repertoire, and increased training if both Craft and Crew.

In order for the young Landen woman to inherit, she had to stand before the District Queen and present her case. She was tentatively confirmed as heir, but opposing claims will be heard for seven years (until 194 AP). After that ruling, she was officially deemed Lady Epona Corcoran, Land Owner, but the tithes she owes at the Village, District and Province level are quite high.

In addition, Epona pays protection money to the local street toughs, Arthfael's old gang. They keep crime to a minimum and double as extras or ushers as needed. That, she considers money well spent. The worse difficulty she faces is with an actual, sophisticated crime lord. He demands a great deal of money every quarter on threat of harm to her cast and crew, or burning the theatre.

Character in Play:

Epona Corcoran settled into the elaborately lighted, old makeup station that doubled as her office desk. She adjusted the pivoting mirrors, lit every oil lamp on its shelf, and meticulously cleaned the grease paint and mascara off of her face. Slowly, her heart rate steadied and her breathing eased. An amused smile flickered; Prince Padean had been exhausting, but utterly kind. His enthusiasm and good will had led to her agreeing to more changes than she intended, but his permanent rental of a corner suite over at the Hammer, and two Box seats here at the Anvil, would cover her over-due protection money.

But dealing with that was for tomorrow.

Tonight, she had yet to reassure Arthfael, and to warn Fergaus as to his abrupt Ascension to the role of Puck. And after those two conversations, she promised herself that she would track down Niall. She wasn't going to let him run off with this Blood Clan without ascertaining both that it was his choice, and that he knew that he was always welcome back here. She'd miss him, for his ready smile and gentle with way the other actors as much as for his great acting skills. She had never felt so much as a hint of contempt towards either herself, or the other Landen who called the Hammer and Anvil home.

The cinnamon and clove cream was cool and soothing as it coated her skin, the ritual of removing her stage make-up leaving her both free, and vulnerable. She brushed out her hair, squared her shoulders and prepared to try to convince a stubborn Blood male that he was his own person, not a slave to custom or some idiotic Queen Bond.

Don Quixote had nothing on Epona Corcoran. She mentally saluted her favorite knight, and prepared to find a few windmills to tilt.
