Distinguishing Features: Syzygy is small and thin. Her most distinctive feature is her psychic scent, which feels incredibly angry for someone of her caste. Also like she is possibly gonna murder someone.

    Personality

    Personality:
Syzygy is a Healer, and her caste drives her to be around people, to want what's best for them, and to protect them. Compared to her sisters in the caste, Syzygy is not particularly friendly nor nurturing. She had the potential to be sweet and caring, but the shithole of a society that is Dena Nehele stomped all of that out of her. Any ability she had to empathize with others has been wiped away and trained out, leaving behind a serious and businesslike woman who keeps her eyes on the prize. She sees no need and feels no desire to interact with others, preferring to keep company with her mentor, Tenoch Yaotl.

Syzygy is decisive. She doesn't often take time to think about things, and has an answer for any question before it's even been spoken. She doesn't wait to see what other opportunities might pop up before she commits to something, preferring instead to take the good things she encounters without waiting to see if she can get something better. One might call her spoiled, but a better word would be scared. Her world has been one of opportunities she has stolen and good things she has forced; beggars cannot be choosers, and Syzygy has never quite grasped that she isn't a beggar anymore.

Dark-Jeweled and passionate with it, Syzygy takes every slight against herself or her mentor seriously. That is to say, she reacts the same to someone calling her a name as she does someone attempting to pick her pocket, and she reacts the same to someone attempting to pick her pocket as she does to someone actively harming her: with violence. Her first instinct on meeting opposition is to destroy it with malice aforethought, and to assume ill intent at the slightest negative provocation.

Syzygy is blunt. She speaks cruelly about people she dislikes and kindly about people she doesn't without regard for her company. She delights in exacting revenge, calling it justice. She views her work as excising a larger cancer from the world around her, and in her heart of hearts considers it her duty as a Healer to destroy the sickness that plagues Dena Nehele. This forms the base difference between herself and Tenoch. Syzygy feels no loyalty to the men and women who come to her for murder. In fact, she keeps track of every single person who contracts her or her mentor to kill someone so that she can later return the favor.

    Likes:
    • Knife tricks. Syzygy grew up in a world where there was a lot of value attached to the ability to do the ultraviolence. Being as small as she is, straight up brawling with people who tried to take advantage of her due to her caste was no more likely to end well than any other method of resistance she knew of. So she took up trying to intimidate the people around her, settling for fear where she couldn't engender love. Syzygy's feats of legerdemain with knives and anything vaguely knife-like in dimension are nigh-magical; she can palm a butter knife without much effort at all, flip them, etc. It translates to dexterity in her Healing work, but it's mostly relevant in her daily life.
    • Physical activity, particularly gymnastics and parkour. Syzygy likes to be doing things. Her Dark Jewel drives her to get out and get going; her mentor has trained her to work with the world around her to get where she needs to go as quickly as possible, and also to shed pursuit if required. Syzygy has excellent balance and takes pride in using her small size to get places she really shouldn't be.
    • Poetry. Her papa used to read to her from massive leather-bound tomes of ancient epics and poetry. Often, as a child, Syzygy would be lulled to sleep by his sonorous rumble. Her mother, Gavrila, had an unexamined talent for poetry, and would often recite longer works she had memorized through the bars of the prison where she was kept. Syzygy has a deep fascination and love for the literature which originally brought her parents together, and goes to significant effort to acquire new books of poetry to read.
    Dislikes:
    • Showmanship - Syzygy doesn't want to be seen. Exhibiting her skills is something she does out of necessity, not out of any desire to be admired for her abilities. As an assassin, being well-known is not an asset; when she fights, she doesn't fight fair, doesn't go for a beautiful strike so much as an efficient one. Subtlety and efficiency are her watchwords. Even as a Healer, she prefers to do her work quietly and out-of-the-way rather than triaging something in the street.
    • Guards - The men who serve in Courts, whether they do so as a guard, as an instructor, or as an accountant, are the people that Syzygy hates most in the world. They're the same sort of men who dragged her mother away to prison and kept her there, the same sort of men who beat her mother to death and refused to allow Syzygy to save her. While Syzygy doesn't go out of her way to harm male Court emissaries, she also will abjectly refuse to assist them.
    • The Erdo family - Syzygy doesn't hate aristos as a whole, even though it would be easy to. She hates her half-brothers and their mother for robbing her of her promised birthright. Anton Erdo was her father, and any sort of Blood Craft would expose that it was so, but because her father died before he could be acknowledged as father she was sent away and doomed to a life of pain and loneliness. Her hate for the Erdo family and all of their relatives drives her in a way that simple ambition wouldn't.
    Fears:
    • Tenoch. Though Syzygy loves her Tenoch and thinks fondly of him, she believes that there is only one way that stories about serial killers and assassins end, and that's with one murdering the other. Of course they are both monsters, cancers of their own that must someday be excised in order to cure Dena Nehele of its sickness. But Tenoch creates more of himself, multiplying like diseased cells. Syzygy knows she never will. Still, he is hundreds of years older than she is, and if he's smart he'll be holding back some pretty powerful tricks. In a straight-up contest of Jewels, he wins... but Syzygy is clever, and with him nearly all the time. When the time comes to kill Tenoch, she's fairly confident she'll win... but she isn't certain.
    • The Myos - Syzygy isn't really worried about the Shaos or the Jacks. The Shaos, she believes, have no reason to be interested in her. She's only a Healer, and a half-trained one at that. But Tenoch has impressed upon her the danger of working as a freelancer in a territory controlled by a union: if they're discovered, if they're caught, then they will be forced to assimilate into the Myos if they're lucky. If they're unlucky, they'll be killed. Syzygy doesn't know which outcome terrifies her more, but she does know that she has a very reasonable caution of the Myos.
    • Loneliness - Syzygy has a strong pack mentality. She has people who are hers and people who are not, and in her own way her loyalty to her people is absolute. Everything is bearable when she has someone there for her, whether it is her mother, her friend, or her mentor. The worst years of her life were the ones where she was alone, and she has no desire to turn back to that. This fear traps her in a life that has a very real chance at killing her. Though her Caste and her Jewels promise her a way out of the life she leads with Tenoch through service, and she knows she could leave it all behind, she won't choose to abandon him for fear of being alone.

      Craft Strengths:
    • Death spells - Syzygy has worked her death spells to what she, personally, considers their peak. She uses her intimate, instinctive knowledge of the body and its systems to cause her targets--when she doesn't just stab them--to suffer sudden systemic failures. She prefers to use less showy methods of murder when she has to use Craft, because she worries that forcing someone to extrude blood through their skin might make it obvious that a Healer is doing the work.
    • Soft tissue repair - Syzygy doesn't heal soft tissue (flesh, muscles, etc) better than anyone else. She does heal it much faster than anyone else. A brief laying-on of hands will heal deep muscle bruises; complex muscular tears might take her fifteen minutes. Cuts and lacerations take less than that.
    Craft Weaknesses:
    • Communication craft - Tenoch doesn't use it, so Syzygy doesn't really use it, either. She's good for short bursts, like ten to fifteen second psychic shouts, but a sustained communication thread or anything more complex than "on your left!" or "I'm here!" is beyond her.
    • Psychic shielding - Some Blood can conceal their mental state from others. When they become angry, the temperature doesn't fluctuate; their psychic scent gives off no indication of what they're really feeling. Syzygy is incapable. She is an open book insofar as how she feels, which is a significant weakness for an assassin to have, because she literally cannot conceal that she is There to Kill You: her psychic scent gives her away.

    History:
Syzygy is an aristo byblow, sired on a household maid and born in 167. Her father, Anton, was the kind of aristo that felt it was his duty to take care of his blood, and it was his intention to bring her up among his legitimate children. He wanted her to be recognized as his child, and to have a small portion of his estate when he passed. Her caste was a bonus, but it was Anton's aristo blood in her veins that gave her worth to him. These were his intentions, but his execution was wanting. Syzygy spent the first seven years of her life alongside her legitimate siblings. She played and took lessons with them by day, but her mother Gavrila corralled her into the kitchen by night, when the family would have their social dinners and galas. It didn’t suit the family’s reputation to have this bastard child; the family held that they were too good for such base needs, that her father and his wife were desperately in love. Yet there was Syzygy, proving the lie.

Her father died in 175, a scant three weeks before Syzygy’s Birthright Ceremony. His wife ejected her deceased husband’s mistress and her bastard from the family estate within days. While Syzygy was valuable, the harm she could do to the family was worse. The woman’s only kindness to them was the single gold mark that she gave Syzygy’s mother as severance. It was enough to rent a room above an inn, for a time, but even at her most penny-pinching Gavrila couldn’t make that stretch an entire childhood.

Syzygy’s Healer caste could have been the little family’s salvation, but the money required to pay for her lessons was more than a shamed maid could produce. Gavrila could have sold Syzygy off to an aristo house, securing her child's place in society and an upbringing of means, but rumors ran rampant about what such Healers were made to endure. Once Syzygy’s birthright of Summer Sky was acquired, the situation became even more dire as her caloric needs increased. Gavrila began to take on loans; the aristos that wouldn’t hire her were willing enough to give her loans with usurious interest rates. Syzygy received her training and her mother turned to whoring to make the payments on her loans, but even that couldn’t equal up to the mounting debt. The aristos tried to claim Syzygy as their repayment, offering to forgive the staggering mound of debt if Gavrila would sign over her rights to her child. Terrified of giving Syzygy to a life of suffering, Gavrila was forced to default, and as such was sent to a debtor’s prison in 177. Syzygy, as a gesture of compassion for a tiny Healer, was allowed to go with her.

The debtor’s prison was a cruel place to grow up. Her mother was kept locked in a cell with three other women until the prison was contracted for work she could perform. The guards regularly beat and raped the prisoners who weren’t out working on contract. Syzygy wasn’t a prisoner, so she ought to have been sent away and left alone on the streets. However, it benefited the guards to have her there; her instinctive ability to heal hid many indiscretions. Yet they had to conceal her from the aristos who might have chosen to take her, so during the day she would be sent out to fend for herself. Her lessons had ceased once Gavrila could no longer pay her tutor, but at night she slept against the bars, holding her mother’s hand. She still believed, naively, that everything would come right in the end.

Her mother died on a chill spring day in 180. Two weeks prior, a guard beat Gavrila so severely that she could no longer move. Syzygy had the Jeweled power to heal her, but without training, she didn't have the knowledge to properly heal the injuries. With the tools to save her mother just outside of reach, Syzygy was forced to watch the woman who had protected her pass away slowly in agony. Syzygy returned from her days wandering the streets to her mother, and was told that Gavrila was dead. Her body had been disposed of, like garbage. The guard who met her told her to run: her presence had been discovered by the aristo who owned the prison, and the man was not kind. This was, in part, self-protection. If the guards had been revealed to have hidden someone so valuable from their employer, they would have found themselves in the prison they ran in short order.

Syzygy was left alone on the streets at the age of thirteen. It was a dangerous time to be a young woman on her own, especially one with a strong Caste and Dark potential; she was left alone to struggle with the advent of her moontime (which had been delayed by her poor nutrition growing up) and with the predators that roamed the streets of the city where her mother had died. She wouldn't have survived, except for the help of a dear friend. Laurate, who went by Laura for short, wore the Summer-sky just as Syzygy did. The difference between them was that Laura had lived on the streets her whole life, and had been taught how to survive the critical three days a month where they could not use Craft. While malnutrition kept those days minimal, being with another person during that time made the whole thing less anxiety-inducing. And though Syzygy didn't know this at the time, Laura was a Shaos apprentice, watching over Syzygy for eventual introduction to interested parties.

Within months, Laura and Syzygy became so close that they went nearly everywhere together. Working in a pair made life on the streets much easier; Laura was a rather skilled pickpocket and mudlark, and Syzygy used her Healing abilities to acquire safe places to rest. Her lack of formal education left her incapable of more complex healings, but where she could she would heal simple fractures and muscle strains among the other street children and the poor. Laura taught her knife tricks, and how to move quickly in the ghetto areas of the cities where they lived. They were never able to stay put in one place for long enough to really put down roots, but their Summer Sky Jewels, combined, made them almost godly compared to the largely Jewelless and landen populace of the streets. For a time, Syzygy was happy again. She was poor, and often cold, and never felt like she had enough to eat, but she had Laura.

It all changed on a sunny summer day in 182. Laura and Syzygy were in a northern Moesian city: Laura showing off her skills with a folding knife for coin and Syzygy assisting a young mother with a colicky baby. It wasn't a good part of town that they were staying in, but then, when was it ever? But this particular area was known for its prostitutes, and on this particular day, two aristos were showing another a good time in anticipation of the young man's Offering that evening. The third aristo set his eyes on Laura.

The altercation began quickly and ended quicker. One moment, Laura was shouting for the aristo to let her go. A handful of heartbeats later, Laura was dead: her head cracked open on the stone of the street. The aristo assailing her was dead too: Syzygy had shoved a knife into the soft spot beneath his chin.

Syzygy would have stayed with Laura until the guard came, and likely been executed for it. In 182, the aristo rule of Dena Nehele was still iron-clad, and the word of two aristos against the word of two commoners, even a Healer, would have essentially been written in gold. Syzygy was ready to die; she was ready to face whatever horrible fate a Healer acquired by an aristo family and accused of murder would face. It was the mother whose child she had been healing that dragged her away from Laura's body before it was even cold, and the mother who sent her away from the town where guards swarmed like flies on a corpse. Not for Laura's murderer, no. But for Anghelo Erdo's--Syzygy's own half-brother.

Lost again, with no friends or allies, Syzygy closed herself off. She stopped helping others out of the goodness of her heart because she couldn't bear to become close to them again, but this only made her more miserable. Her nature cried out to be near people and to take care of them, but the world was cruel and broken: Laura was dead, and there would never be justice for her. She didn't want to heal people, to let them pretend the world was kinder than it was. Showing them the world as it was was a kind of Healing, too, she told herself, every time her heart and Craft cried out that she owed a sick child healing. She owed the people of Dena Nehele nothing.

There was more than one reason for that. If she didn't Heal, she could be lost in the crowds of men and women. They could suspect, and many people did, but where before she'd earned enough goodwill to be hidden from the Guilds and aristos that pursued any unprotected Healer, she now had the fact that she fully avoided people. Syzygy didn't spend time in the cities anymore; they were too full of memories. She hung about in the outskirts of the world in a strange, grieving fugue.

In 183, she ventured back into the city for the first time. She had, on some level, an awareness that life needed to be more than just running and hiding from possibly-imaginary pursuers. She craved purpose, and she found it in a public garden after dark. Syzygy had learned well from Laura how to traverse civilization without being seen, but Tenoch Yaotl was well aware he was there when he finished a contract on the mistress and illegitimate child of an aristo Warlord. He offered her a choice. She could help him on his next job, provide a distraction, and go on her way with a few memory tweaks. Or she could die. Syzygy didn't want to live, particularly, but neither did she want to die. She agreed to help.

Three weeks later, Syzygy helped Tenoch with a contract on a merchant with pretensions of glory, who had harmed a woman and crossed the wrong community. She saw her purpose for the first time. Rather than submitting to the memory modifications Tenoch had promised, she begged him to teach her. She had a powerful potential, a Caste that no one would ever suspect of being turned to systemic harm, and a need to learn. She had long thought that only death would heal the sicknesses of Dena Nehele, the men like Anghelo who raped women because their dicks got hard. Tenoch offered an opportunity for her to learn to end them, speaking in the only language that monsters understood.

Tenoch agreed. He taught her. There was no offering of a way out. When he was done, she would be an assassin like him, or she would be dead. That was a bargain Syzygy was more than willing to make. She trained. After every lesson, Tenoch told her: "Obey, and you live today. No promises tomorrow." Eventually, he stopped telling her that he'd reconsider her survival tomorrow. And with every skill she gained, she became more valuable to him; she gathered training in Healing, and turned it to killing spells of her own. Eventually, Tenoch stopped reminding her of the power he held over her life. While he was still indubitably her teaching-master, they became more equitable partners in the work.

He showed her how he acquired his work. There was no central hub of contracts; they rarely met contractors face to face, and they never gave their names. Tenoch employed urchins--different ones each time--to pick up payments and names from strategic places around multiple Territories. He never left their current base without concealing his Jewels; Syzygy found more than one way out of every place they stopped for the night. She began to strike out on her own, working for herself, the cleanliness of the world and the treatment of Dena Nehele's illness.

Yet it would have been foolish to expect she went unnoticed. Though none of her observers were aware of her contracted murders, and she was only rarely aware of them, her actions were known; the Guilds knew she was a murderer. They even knew she was protected by a Dark-Jeweled Warlord. They went unaware of the true extent of her intrusion upon their turf.

In 188AP, Syzygy made her Offering. She went in determined to make the full descent, to step out of the altar with a Green that would match Tenoch's Birthright. Syzygy successfully came out with an uncut Green, but her Dark Jewel introduced a brand new problem. She made her Offering at an altar, seeing no way around it and unaware that she didn't have to. Her Green became a matter of public record.

The low-level hum of interest in her suddenly ramped up. Tenoch had been a large part of the reason no one had interfered with her previously; no one was willing to mess with a Gray, not even for the rewards some families offered for a Healer of any Jewel strength. Now, as an adult, they weren't attempting to kidnap her (and when they were, she could handle herself). They wanted to court her--to see her serving in their Courts--and Syzygy did her best to play them off. She didn't want a job in a Court, where she was accountable to people around her, where her location needed to be known at all times.

For the last five years, Syzygy has been skating a very thin line. Her real joy is in the contracts she takes, the work she does with Tenoch and the purification of her homeland, but her Caste makes her work harder than she would have to otherwise. At the same time, it also functions to deflect suspicion; she does work as a Healer, using her Caste as a reason to be in places she oughtn't be.

And of course, there are interested parties always lurking in the background...

    Character in Play:
Her target was a middle-aged man, paunchy, wearing a penguin suit. Long black tails, a dove-gray waistcoat, a tall white collar that probably came separate from the rest of his shirt. A black ascot. Was it called an ascot? Syzygy wasn't sure. There was white in his dark, slicked-back hair. His family signet ring lacking any Jewels set in the hole for it. Instead, he had a diamond in the coronet above the shield. It glinted whenever it caught the weak wintery light of the little Moesian town where he liked to fuck little girls. Syzygy marked him with a little mote of Green Craft, and climbed down from the roof where she'd been watching him.

Technically speaking, this wasn't a contract. No one was paying her to kill this aristo asshole. No one paid her to heal them, either; it was simply a service she provided the Territory, the same as a Queen fed the land and a Prince sorted papers. She joined the market-day throng of people and adjusted her scarf. No one would remember her here, where everyone's hair was just as snow-pale as hers, and everyone's eyes just as dark. In the crowd, in the middle of psychic scents, those that could feel her brewing anger brushed it off as a chill wind. Many of them couldn't. Landens were favored victims for sick fucks like this. Who listened to the women and children who populated the gutters?

She crossed into the oncoming traffic, following the tracking-mark of her own Craft.

Tenoch probably wouldn't approve of this extracurricular activity. He wouldn't stop her, either. Killing without getting paid was like a haberdasher making hats for free; it didn't make any business sense. This wasn't business to Syzygy, who still saw Laura's face behind her eyelids sometimes. This was Healing. This was revenge. The green mote got closer and she summoned a dagger from her personal cabinet, kept the flat of her blade against the inside of her forearm. No need to cause undue damage.

Pulled it up just as she bumped into her aristo target, sliding the blade up through the soft tissue between his sternum. "Oops," she said. He looked down at her, watery blue eyes wide with surprise. "Sorry, sir. I really should watch where I'm going." The crowd walked around them, ignorant of the intimacy of this moment. Her Healer's Craft told her about the cut across his artery, how the standing dead man would bleed out in seconds when Syzygy pulled her knife free. He lived as long as she stood there. As long as the knife plugged the hole.

Someone jostled her. She smiled, thinly. Vanished the knife, and melted back into the crowd. Hands clean. Behind her, as she followed the flow of traffic, a man began to scream.
