Pre-Purge History

At one point in history, the number of years can remain vague or set though would likely be centuries before the Purge, there was a civil war between the Blood of Raej over two Queens who both wore the Sapphire. One was highly experienced and had been trained by the former Queen, but the other had displayed a true knack for Protocol and a deep care for her people. As the predecessor had been in talks for naming her successor when she died, there was no clear path to the throne and Raej soon afterwards dissolved into civil war.

When the war had been waging for months and the Blood had begun to fight and die for their difference of opinions, both Queens seeing the other’s subject’s aggression as a call to war, though both Queens condoned the actions done in their names.

By the time it was obvious that Raej’s civil war would only stop when one of the Queens lay dead, the lion’s share of the Priestess came together. It was there the High Priestess introduced a man she thought could help solve the problem – one Gray Jeweled Priest Warlord. Trained in secret by the High Priestess herself, he was both powerful enough to destroy either of the Queens but adhered strongly to the word of the Darkness itself with a near fanatical devotion. For some time the Priestesses railed against the transgression of their Caste, calling down about the High Priestess herself, but some saw the way the Priest Warlord spoke, saw the true love of the Blood in his eyes and voice.

Before the battle that was intended to show the Darkness who the rightful Queen would be, the Priest Warlord and the High Priestess approached both the Queens and demanded an audience. Between the reverence of the Priestesses and the Gray Jewel, both Queens agreed and in the dead of night, when to an accord with a Sanctuary. Outside and nearing dawn, the armies grew restless and neither of the Queens had returned. When it was nearly the boiling point and both armies ready to destroy the other for the mere possibility they had destroyed each other’s Queens, the two Queens, the High Priestess, and the Warlord Priest appeared in the middle of the battlefield. Using craft enhanced voices, both Queens spoke to their own men and women, beseeching them in the name of the Darkness to listen to the Priest and Priestess that they spoke of a path that would save Raej. When the Priest spoke, revealing both his nature and his strength, the crowd listened, unsure at the power of a Gray. When the Priest Warlord laid out his plan, a council of members from any caste and from each district, and a motion to have each Queen rule half of the Territory, upper and lower, a plan to unite Raej until a time a single Queen could be chosen to rule all of the battle torn Territory. The High Priestess and newly appointed High Priest would lead the council with the rest of the Priestesses responsible to make sure that neither the High Priestess nor Priest would overstep their bounds. Both armies agreed, likely both for the plan was a compromise and neither side wished to start the battle against a Gray Jeweled Priest Warlord.

Within a few decades, the elder Queen passed with no Queen daughters, naming her successor the other Queen’s own Queenly daughter. Within the next generation, a new Queen stood and ruler of both halves of the whole Territory, but still under the guidance of the council, dubbed the Council of Elders. The High Priestess and High Priest, as it was revealed later, were engaged within their own relationship. Their own children both went on to become Priests and Priestesses.

As time passed, the Council took on more jobs, such as managing the education of the young and making sure there was capable men and women trained to defend their Territory and loyal only to the Territory and no specific ruler. It is always the High Priestess of Raej and one of the few Priests who rules over the Council, both directly serving the Territory Queen.

Purge Era History

No longer did the Queen listen to counsel, she saw only profits and slacked her thirst on greed. The slave trade flourished at this time. As Askavi took over Terrielle, Raej’s Queen spread her legs to the force, supplying slaves when the Eyriens needed fodder for their next attacks.

When the Purge struck the Queen herself died in an attempt to save herself and her Court perished in great numbers. Chaos ensued in Raej and their conqueror and proclaimed ally Askavi was broken back to their own lands.

Landens during this time enjoyed the greatest amount of freedom they could recall in written history. Even though chaos ensued the Blood relied on the Landen and the broken nature of Raej served the Landen populous like it had in many Territories, they became empowered and powerful. Food to a starving man is always a dangerous weapon even to a defenseless man.

Post Purge History

Daughter of previous Queen took up Raej after a year of chaos. Though broken back to Birthright she curtailed slave trade, belief that Witch culled the Blood for reasons such as the slave markets. Disorder still ran high and though successful in the start of control of the danger of turmoil, Raej started to suffer decline from too few Queens to maintain the land.

Different families, selected for having a Queen caste and Raejian blood, held the seat of Territory Queen in the generations following the Purge. As more and more uncommon ruling classes set up to rule Districts and even Provinces, Warlord Princes, Priestesses, and the rare Priest, the people became accustomed to non-Queen rulers. This tradition continues to present day to see a different caste of ruler for a District and rare Province.

Landens voices are beginning to be heard during this time and the first Landen Counsul is created in the Capital of Raej, Kemet.

Modern History

The following recounts Odji Khaldun's rise to power during 175 Post Purge.

Odji proclaims that he is from the line related to the High Priestess and Priest of legend. He traces his line back to the Priestess sister of the High Priest – the direct line from the High Priestess and Priest was wiped out during the Purge.

Odji’s brother was Consort and husband to the previous Queen, a Summer Sky Jeweled ruler. After the Queen sanctioned the razing of Hylia, a group of Landen’s retaliated. Tipped off by a disgruntled Court member, a large band of Landens were given the location of the summer get away of the Court. As only the Court and First Circle attended this getaway, they were able to overpower and kill the Queen, Odji’s brother, Odji’s wife, who served the first circle, and their unborn child. This occurred in 175 PP and caused the whole of Raej’s economy to come to a standstill.

Odji, with the sanction of the High Priestess, steps up to guide the Territory, his belief that the previous Queen only brought ruin to Raej. Though there is unrest at the unprecedented move, Odji and the Priestesses remind the Territory of their legend, how a Priest Warlord was able to rebind Raej, and how they should allow a Priest of the legend’s relation to try to keep Raej together.

Beyond the eyes of the Territory, Odji makes deals with the slave trade to increase activity and bring in extra profits to Raej. He uses this money to keep his people fed and make sure the Blood survive the coming years, especially with the rising power of the Landens.

As Odji holds all Landen’s responsible for his Queen, brother, wife and unborn child’s deaths, he quietly recruited a group of men and women who share his beliefs in his Court. These people agree with his vision that the Landens are overpopulated and dangerous. Though he has been unable to make any open movement yet, Odji is in to play the long game. When he feels ready with his Court’s support and the complacency of the Territory, he yet plans to reduce the threat of the Landens.

The past 10 years have been a slow improvement for Raej, less people go hungry and the Blood are at least maintaining their numbers. Though the opinion that another Purge would destroy Raej is still believed, the Priestesses maintain that it would be centuries before another Witch arrives. Instead the Priestesshood focuses on bringing hope back to the people while Odji prepares to wage a war on those who were once protect. The High Priest is slowing preparing to wage a war on the Landens of Raej.
