ill tidings
« on: Jul 21, 18, 11:09:14 AM »

Nafessa Domani waited to be admitted into the presence of Syeira Neferet, Queen of Ta-Awy Province. She’d gone to the Territory Court first to find Lady Abbasi, but was told that she’d taken the day to spend her with her children. Apprehensive about attempting to find the woman’s home and appearing as a threat, no matter her intentions, Nafessa left a message for the woman asking that the High Priestess reach out to her at her earliest opportunity. She recalled that Lady Neferet was also a Priestess and a Queen besides. Perhaps she could aid her while she waited for Lady Abbasi to receive her message.

She went to the Province Court.

Nafessa was offered cool water and dates to eat while she waited. She’d never seen a palace so tasteful and well-appointed. She was a long way from her family’s home in Damietta. Did people ever truly tire of life in the cities? Nafessa could not see how. She ate her dates and drank her water, rising only when a fellow Dusk Warder entered the waiting room and said that Lady Neferet would see her now. The Red Witch stood and followed without question, taking a deep breath as she prepared to meet one of the most powerful and terrifying women in the entire Territory.

Nafessa strode down a marble-floored hall that seemed to stretch on into eternity. Men and women of importance passed her, but Nafessa kept her attention focused straight ahead. Finally, she arrived at the heavy double-doors that lead to the throne room, but her escort made a sharp left down a side hallway. Nafessa was escorted a small, but opulent waiting room...occupied by the smallest woman that Nafessa had ever seen.

The Red Jewel she bore, however, made her presence fill the room. It was strange to encounter someone who possessed the same jewels as she, but who was also twice-blessed by the Darkness. A pious woman, Nafessa averted her eyes and bowed before the small woman whose face was rumored to be covered to keep others from being mesmerized by her beauty.

She remained silent, waiting for Lady Neferet to grant her permission to speak.

Syeira's days held a certain rhythm to them, like a stream that had etched its way through the hard earth until it ran that way whenever the skies opened and the rains fell. It didn't matter whether she was within the Territory Court or her own Court, across the River Vaal on the opposite bank from Kemet. As the pattern remained, so Syeira remained steady in her deep and passionate religious observance. The beloved daughter of Mother Night lived as close in contact with the Darkness as she could.

It gave her soul peace to do so.

But she was not merely a Priestess. She carried within and upon her the burden of being a Queen of the Blood. The demands of that life clashed terribly with her much sought solitude. How could she truly understand the Darkness if she was constantly called back by the clawing needs of other people? She had a Court of very competent individuals for such things.

And yet still, there were times when her own pursuits needed to be set aside to meet with those who needed her.

She watched as the Red Jeweled witch was admitted to the room. She stood at the other end, motionless. Her hair, face, and body covered in long black robes. Her hands were motionless at her sides, nestled within dark gloves. Only her eyes showed any life, a spark of fierce intelligence shining from within. Upon her chest rest her Red Jewel, glowing faintly against the dark cloth.

"Lady Domani." The doll like Queen spoke softly, but the weight of her words reverberated around the room. It was not so much a greeting as it was an acknowledgment that the other Red Jeweled woman did, in fact, exist. It was an honor offered due to her position as a Dusk Warder, Syeira having worked closely with them for so long.  "I understand you have something important to tell me. And I offer you the benefit of the doubt that it is important. For surely you would not have risked interrupting my prayer for less?"

Nafessa did not expect Syeira Neferet’s presence to be so terrifying for such a diminutive woman. All the same, the Priestess Queen was still caused her no small amount of trepidation. Despite the fact that they both wore the Red as their jewel of rank, Nafessa understood very quickly that the Province Queen held far more power than the Dusk Warder could manage on her best day. Those cool, intelligent eyes weighed Nafessa. She had not ordered the Red witch struck down yet, so she would have at least the chance to speak to why she’d come to this place.

“Thank you, Lady Neferet. You may judge its importance for yourself. I come to you as supplicant and hopeful ally, my lady. I believe that I have uncovered a conspiracy hatched in the Damietta District  against a family that has come to prominence in recent times. As you see, several of these missives reference the children and siblings of one Lady Abbasi, High Priestess of Raej.” Nafessa said, daring to look at Syeira. She hoped that the Priestess Queen was an ally of Lady Abbasi’s, or at least someone willing to help her in the hopes of making an ally down the road. If she was indifferent, Nafessa would have to locate Lady Abbasi’s home and take her chances.

I attempted to bring this news to the Territory Court, but I was unable to reach anyone who could have lent aid.” Nafessa said. She kept her tone respectful and deferential, acknowledging the dual-nature of the woman before her. They twice-blessed were not plentiful and, where they occurred, Nafessa wished to show respect. But even more important was that she pay tribute to the Priestess as well as the Queen. Knowing that she’d disturbed Lady Neferet’s prayers bothered her more than meeting a Queen.

I wish to provide proof of my accusations.” she said, conjuring a sheaf of letters into existence. The Dusk Warders attending Syeira dropped their hands to their weapons, but Nafessa did not react. Instead, she passed the papers to the nearest attendant to pass to Lady Neferet. She would wait until the small woman had everything in hand before speaking once more.

I believe that the High Priestess and her family are in danger. I want to help.” she said.

Syeira Neferet's slight frame and diminutive stature were only two of the traits that caused those within her Court to think of her as a kind of living doll. Her tendency toward stillness enhanced the illusion. Most didn't realize how much they moved even while sitting still. Their hands would gesture as they spoke, or brush the hair from their eyes. Their shoulders would shrug, their feet shift, even their breathing would grant the observer proof that life burned within.

The Red Jeweled Priestess Queen did not do these things as she listened to the Dusk Warder before her. Her hands remained still. Her gaze unerring. She did not shift or settle. And even her breath was so light, there was no noticeable movement of her chest or shoulders. Eyes painted in the darkest kohl watched the Red Jeweled witch before her. Nothing she heard seemed to warrant the interruption until two words were spoken: Lady Abassi.

Nailah.

Instantly, the room grew colder. It was not even a thought, merely the Priestess Queen's protective fury rising deep from the depths of the Abyss. Rarely were Queen and Priestess in agreement, but in shielding the High Priestess of Raej, the sister of her soul and her bonded Priestess, both halves were united. She accepted the pages from her own Dusk Warder, a sweep of Red Craft spreading them out before her to float in the air so she could see all of the evidence as she began to read what the missives contained.

Each new page reviewed dropped the temperature another few degrees. Gloved fingertips traced the hallways on the sketch of the Temple. The details grew as she neared Nailah's office, special attention clearly paid to that area. There was a notation of her schedule, as well as the schedules of Kontar and Rehema, two of her siblings. But it was the sketch of Nailah’s home, with notations about where her parents and sons slept, that caused a hiss to escape from behind her veil.

Ice crept over the window, the pitcher of water nearby frosting as the water slowly froze. This time she did not bother to motion with her hand, but instead allowed the pages to return to their neat stack and come to rest on the table like a sleeping viper. Turning to the Dusk Warder who had handed her the papers, she said, "Notify the other Dusk Warders. Lady Abassi and her family must be protected." The witch nodded and left the room. Syeira closed her eyes and reached along the Red for Nailah.

*Sister! I fear you and yours are in danger. Your home and the Temple may not be safe. Please. Take the greatest care.*

She turned her attention back to Lady Domani, her gaze hard. "You were right to come to me. Lady Abassi and I share a sacred bond and I will see no harm come to her. You offered to help. What do you have in mind?"

Nafessa’s jewels matched Lady Neferet’s. She knew this without question. That did nothing to ease the alarm that coursed through her as the temperature in the room dropped without warning while Syeira read the information before her. Had she erred in coming here? Was the Priestess Queen an enemy of Lady Abassi? Or would she consider all of this nothing but paranoid rambling? The questions that spun through Nafessa’s mind made it hard to concentrate on anything other than the deep cold that radiated from the diminutive woman. Lady Neferet could take her life right now, without cause, and Nafessa would be powerless to stop her. Oh, her jewels made her a threat but Syeira commanded hundreds of people ready to fight and die at her command.

Nafessa was outnumbered and gambling that Lady Neferet was more loyal to Raej than herself.

When Lady Syeira alerted the Dusk Warders to protect Lady Abbasi, Nafessa exhaled, the breath visible between them in that cold room.

Nailah’s response to Syeira was immediate, as the Priestess had felt the spike of her soul-sister’s anger in her own breast.

*I am with my sister and the boys now at her clinic. I will come to you now.*

Nafessa remained silent, unsure of what was happening. Lady Neferet believed the evidence before her, but she’d said nothing of the messenger. Finally, the Priestess Queen spoke. Nafessa took a deep breath, cold air stinging her lungs, before speaking.

Mother Night and the Darkness are merciful, Lady Neferet. I am but one woman, but if Lady Abbasi will have it, I would offer myself as her protector. She is important to me, as well. Lady Abbasi performed my Birthright Ceremony and she was kind to me when she had no reason to be. Years later, I sought her out to perform my Offering Ceremony and she did so with the same kindness and grace. You might say that she is responsible for who I am and the opportunities that came to me, Lady Neferet.

If I can defend her with my skills or my life, I would do so. The debt I owe can not be repaid, but I will make the attempt if she allows it.
” Nafessa said. She fell silent, letting the other woman judge the truth and conviction in her words. She was sincere in her belief and her willingness to see this through. Syeira could not know that Nafessa Domani would defend Nailah, with or without Syeira’s leave. She hoped that Lady Abbasi would give her a chance to prove her worth.

Nafessa would not make either woman regret the decision.

Syeira let out an audible breath when Nailah replied. The temperature in the room eased back from the frozen wasteland Syeira's rage had quickly been creating. It was still much colder than the rest of the palace, but it was at least tolerable.

The Priestess Queen's dark eyes focused on the Dusk Warder as she made her offer. There was nothing in her poise or her voice that caused doubt of her sincerity. Her position as a Dusk Warder already spoke great volumes of her dedication to the protection of those who guarded Raej's spiritual path. And the information she had brought could prove invaluable, especially if it saved Nailah's life. In that case, it might be some of the most precious information in the entire Realm.

"I accept your offer on behalf of Lady Abbasi and her family. When she is out of danger, she can make her own choices as to your continued role in her service. You will remain here. Nailah is on her way now."

If the Dusk Warder had any questions about the closeness between the two Red Jeweled Priestesses, she would surely no longer. Nailah yielded to the Queen's warning as quickly as Syeira would do the same at word from her High Priestess. The bond between the two Red Jeweled women was forged in the holiest of unions deep within the embrace of the Abyss.

And now a third Red jeweled witch had appeared offering to shield her beloved chosen sister from this most treacherous of plots against the High Priestess of Raej.

"I will pray while we wait." Syeira did not need to be within the hallowed walls of a Temple to reach Mother Night with her prayers. Kneeling in the center of the room, she resumed her devotions, sinking easily back into the Abyss. Her Red Jewel glowed against her dark robes. While she knew it took longer, it seemed mere minutes had passed before she felt Nailah's dark presence seeking out for hers. Her eyes opened as she slowly rose from the Abyss, power shimmering off of her form. "She is here."

Nailah was with Rehema at the clinic, watching as her boys studied an ill sheep under the tutelage of Rehema’s partner. The sisters were talking and laughing. Every minute they spent together lessened the distance between them some, filling Nailah’s heart with a joy that she’d forgotten was possible. Nailah had suggested that they get lunch at the Casa de Atholi, having grown more and more fond of the place as the days went by. Rehema had agreed and they were about to leave the boys in Lady Sativa’s care when Syeira’s mind brushed against hers.

*Sister! I fear you and yours are in danger. Your home and the Temple may not be safe. Please. Take the greatest care.*

Nailah sensed the anger in Syeira’s words. Beneath that anger, however, there was an undercurrent of fear that Nailah rarely felt in her Queen. Syeira wouldn’t reach out if there wasn’t an issue. She also wouldn’t reach out if it was something that she could deal with herself. Nailah told Rehema the situation They quickly gathered the boys, with Nailah promising to bring them back another time for lessons.

Nailah took her sons and left the clinic, heading for the nearest Landing Pad. Upon arrival, she and the boys took a coach across the River Vaal to the Province Seat. Bakari and Tsekani voiced their unhappiness about having their session at their aunt’s clinic cut shot. Nailah let them vent their frustration, even as she pondered what could have rattled her Queen enough to reach out for her. Anyone who dared attack her family was fool. Kontar alone was a fearsome threat. For once, she was glad for his presence in Raet’s Court. Maybe she could at least keep him occupied while Nailah figured this out.

There were Dusk Warders awaiting their arrival.

Nailah sent the boys with a member of Syeira’s Court, her racing as she drew closer to Syeira’s meeting room. They would get to the bottom of this. And if someone truly meant harm to her family, the High Priestess would see their world destroyed before she ended their lives.

The doors opened and Nailah strode into the room, but stopped short when she realized that Syeira had company. Company that she recognized.

Nailah had performed Nafessa Domani’s Birthright and Offering Ceremonies, both among the proudest moments of Nailah’s own life. She’d kept tabs on the younger woman, hoping to bring her into the Priestesshood. When she elected to join the Dusk Warders, the Priestess was happy for her but consider it a missed opportunity. She’d prayed about it since then, wondering what the Red Jeweled woman would go on to do with her life. Finding her here with Syeira gave Nailah pause. She couldn't imagine what either woman had to do with the other, but she'd learn soon enough.

Nailah bowed deeply to her Queen, then straightened and looked between the pair.

Sister, I came as soon as I was able. What has happened?” she asked, not yet addressing Nafessa.

First, her Queen. Then everything else.
