Hear You When You're Quiet
« on: Jul 08, 18, 11:58:11 AM »
Kontar was coming for lunch today.  She felt anticipation, as she always did, for his visit.  He could visit every day - which he didn't, but he could! - and she would still feel this nervous anticipation.  Today, however...

Today was different.  She had a Court Seer now, one Bonded to her.  A third Bond.. something unexpected and treasured all the same.  Someone who had chosen to remain in her Court, to remain close by, and who she truly hoped would get along with the Bonded who had not chosen to do the same.

She silently scolded herself for that thought.  Kontar had familial obligations. His sister was the High Priestess!  Of course his time would be torn between his Queen and the High Priestess.. she should stop allowing herself to mope about it!  If Kontar had wanted to join her Court, he'd have said so.

She flit around the small table, checking to make sure everything was just as she wanted it.  She'd had Cook pull out the fine dishware for this, and there was a vase of fresh River Lillies in the center of the four place settings.  One for herself, and three for her Bonded.  It was simple, and lovely.  She'd even wove a gentle cooling spell into the gazebo so that they could enjoy the look out into the city without dying of the heat that Summer was plastering upon their beloved Territory.

Vadik, has he arrived yet?
Not yet, little cousin.  Don't worry, he never runs late.

She laughed, softly, before glancing over to her only physical guest at the moment.  Maaria was lovely, as she always was.  "I am looking forward to this.  Cook often goes out of her way for these little get togethers, and I'm hoping that you will like Kontar.  He's wonderful."

He truly was.  He had been the rock she needed when Maseo Bonded to Syeira.  He had been there for her after Maseo was banished to Dena Nehele.. he'd been helping to mend her broken heart simply by making her smile and laugh whenever he came to visit.  He was a dear friend and companion... and she just wished she could keep him.  It wasn't even about snubbing the High Priestess, though Darkness knew she wanted to.

It was about him, and herself.  It was about turning her attention to Asyut, and ensuring that everything did better than it had before.  With her Bonded around her, she was sure she could accomplish it.  With one of them off wandering around doing the High Priestess' bidding for who knew what... well...

It was jealousy.  She was certain it was jealousy.. which was a most ugly emotion that she really needed to squash before it got the better of her.  So she smoothed down her cream colored dress, nibbling at her lip as she focused on this moment in time.  Kontar was coming NOW, and that was all that mattered.  She'd deal with her emotions about his returning to Nailah's side later.

"I really must plan a larger gathering, I think.. something intimate for all of us.  What do you think, Maaria?  A party, perhaps?"

"He must be a good man if you are so excited for him to arrive.  I'm sure we'll get along."  Maaria said with a smile as she watched Raet flit around the table.  There was an air of amusement around her as she watched her Queen adjust the settings on the table to be just so, "I'm excited to meet and get to know your other Bonded."

Maaria would have offered to help but her leg had been a little stiff earlier today and she'd been shooed to a chair by Raet when she'd arrived at the gazebo.  So instead she watched her Queen adjust this and that with hint of wry amusement as she sat and enjoyed the cooling spells woven around them both.  It was nice to once more have someone who cared enough to ensure she wasn't pushing herself too far.  Eventually she thought it would become annoying to have everyone in the Court following the Queen's lead and asking her how she was feeling but for the moment it didn't bother her.

She'd settled into the routine in Raet's court far easier than she'd initially expected.  Being around her Queen was both relaxing and comforting.  Being here also meant she now had a steady income which in turn had helped her to stock up on supplies she'd been running low on. She'd taken it upon herself to meet the members of Raet's court and while she didn't have any real friends as of yet she liked the people here.  She'd especially wanted to get to know Raet and her cousin better and had spent as much time as possible with both.  She'd managed to talk the Queen into a card game a few nights before.  The game had ended with Maaria losing but it had given them a chance to talk in private about a variety of topics and Maaria felt even more certain that she'd made the right choice when she'd chosen to stay.

Vadik had been kind enough to escort her to the library just the day before.  Of course he'd had to drag her back out when it was time for dinner but she'd enjoyed herself and he was good company.  A part of Maaria was excited at the prospect of meeting Kontar but she was a bit nervous as well.  She hoped she wasn't lying to her Queen and that they would get along as well as she did with Vadik.  At the very least she hoped they wouldn't clash too badly, she didn't want to cause Raet any pain which she attributed partly to the bond she shared with the other woman and the rest because she truly enjoyed spending time with her.

She wondered though why Kontar wasn't here serving in Raet's court.  He was one of her bonded and yet he didn't seem to be present very often which made her wonder why.  Raet was very excited to see him today which only added to the mystery.  Did Kontar not come by often? Why did her Queen seem conflicted about something everytime she mentioned him?  Or was Maaria reading too much into things and Raet was just eager for them to meet?

Even as the questions drifted through her mind she was distracted by another, "A party?"  Maaria hesitated for a moment hands smoothing down the sleeves of her white dress fingering the gold embroidery on the cuffs of the long white sleeves, "I haven't been to a party in a long time."  Tilting her head to one side, long dark hair falling loose around her face she eyed her Queen for a moment before leaning forward with a light note to her voice, "I'm afraid I might have forgotten what it was like to be at one.  I can only hope I don't make a fool of myself"

Maaria leaned back the golden trim on the bottom hem of her dress glinting in the sunlight as she mused, "It would be nice to meet more of the people that you trust.  I'd like to introduce myself to them."

Kontar had made his decision weeks ago, but Raet’s invitation to lunch affirmed his decision. He’d put on a dark blue cotton shirt and black trousers and headed off to his Queen’s palace to meet her. He stopped along the way to obtain a bottle of wine for them to enjoy, because Kontar thought it would be strange to arrive at his Queen’s doorstep and not bring anything for the meal. Raet would demur and wave him off, but Kontar would stand firm and insist. Raet was not especially good at letting others take care of her, as evidenced by the entire situation with Lord Shingetsu. She seemed to be handling it well, but Vadik had, unbeknownst to Raet, ratted her out to Kontar by accident.

The Tacean was still playing with her mind and heart, even from thousands of miles away. The thought made Kontar’s blood boil. Vadik had asked Kontar not to discuss the matter with Raet because she did not like discussing Lord Shingetsu with anyone, even him. Kontar was fine with that.

He really wanted to discuss the matter with Lord Shingetsu, anyway.

Kontar arrived at the Asyut Palace and greeted the guards. By now, they knew him on sight. He exchanged greetings with each of the men he encountered, as well as a few members of Lady Raet’s First Circle as he made his way to the dining room. On the way, he stopped at the kitchen to greet Cook, who asked after Masika. Kontar forced a smile at the thought of his elder sister who seemed hell-bent on burning her life to ashes. He told Cook that he’d relay her greeting and get Masika to come and visit one of these days very soon. Eventually, he caught up to Vadik who told him that Raet was expecting him and that they’d had a guest.

Kontar’s immediate action was to pray that it wasn’t Nailah. He didn’t think he could stop the women from killing each other and leveling half of Asyut in the process. It would be a hard thing to explain to Lady Neferet and the High Priest that the District Queen and the High Priestess simply could not exist in the same place at the same time. Then again, if they actually decided to kill each other, Kontar would probably die in the opening volley, so he’d be there to escort one or the other into Mother Night’s embrace.

He put that morbid line of thought away and entered the room when Vadik opened the door and announced him to Raet…and her companion.

Kontar crossed the room in four strides and took Raet’s hands as soon as she offered them. Suddenly, the nagging worry in the back of his withdrew like the ebbing tide. He felt calmer and more at peace just being in her presence. His Queen really did make everything better in ways that his family and Nima could not. It used to shame him to acknowledge it, but Kontar realized that it was just a facet of life. Their bond meant that Raet tended to him and nourished his soul the same way that he looked out for her tender heart and looked after her physical well-being.

My lady, thank you for inviting me today. I...I’ve missed you.” Kontar said, resisting the urge to pull Raet into his arms and just hold her for a time.

Only when Raet bid him to be comfortable did he acknowledge the Black Widow in the room. He knew immediately that she stood deeper than him in the Abyss, which gave him pause. He did not recognize her. Was she new to Court or had he just missed her on a previous visit? Clearly, if she was here, it meant that Raet trusted her.

Good day to you both.” Kontar said, looking between the pair. He immediately revised the list of topics they could discuss in the presence of another. That made Kontar remember the bottle of wine and he conjured it and offered it to Raet.

I hope that we can share this at some point in the future, my lady.” Kontar said.

Kontar.  A piece of her heart and soul.  He came to the gazebo and she felt.. delighted.  For a moment, she felt herself let loose all the worry and stress, her hands stretching out to take his as he joined her.  Precious Kontar.

She stepped into him, gently wrapping her arms around him as she felt that swell of connection again.  She always wanted to hug Kontar.  She had from the moment she'd first seen him.  That thought was both sweet and.. bitter at the same time.  Maseo.  Nailah. Neither of them had been happy in that moment.

Far from it.

With that thought in mind, she took a step back after a moment and squeezed his hands.  "Sit, sit.  We've been waiting for you.  Lord Kontar Abbasi, allow me to introduce you to the Lady Maaria Nimr.  She's my Court Seer, and your Bond Sister."  Raet smiled, sheepishly, and squeezed his fingers.

"I've been wanting to introduce you since I got her here."  Unspoken that she hadn't wanted to interfere with his time with Nima and Nailah.  Nima because the girl held Kontar's affections... Nailah, because she was fairly certain the High Priestess would take it personally and try to DO something about it.  What that would be, she wasn't certain.  But she was absolutely certain it would probably be unpleasant.

Like helping Kemet's Queen try to unseat Raet, most likely.

"We can most certainly share the wine, Kontar, whenever you would like.  I'd tell you what we're having for lunch but... Cook insisted on it being a surprise.  So I'm as unaware as you.  How have things been?"

She was both eager to know and.. not.  She wanted to know about his time with Nima, of course.  And she wanted to know about his friendships, his time at Casa de Atholi.. but she truly didn't wish to hear about Nailah Abbasi's days.  She didn't want to listen to her Bonded speak of his shrewish sister - because Kontar loved his sister.

And she really shouldn't hold that as a bad thing.  But Nailah...

Well.. the High Priestess was not a friend.  And Raet had the suspicion that even if she attempted to end their irritation with each other and even if she attempted friendship, the Priestess would never go for it.  She just didn't seem the sort to forgive.  Not even to forgive the Bonded of her Brother's heart.

That Lady Abbasi was such a dear.. friend.. to her mentor and heart-sister was like sandpaper on an open wound.

"You will have to join me in fussing over Lady Maaria, Kontar.  She has a distressing habit of trying to overdo things herself."  Raet grinned, reaching out to rest her fingers lightly on Maaria's wrist for a moment.  "Dont' try to deny it dear.. you do.  But I'm grateful, else I might not have found you."

Maaria stood as Vadik and a male he announced as Kontar stepped outside.  Maaria greeted Vadik with a warm smile as he joined the group at the table even as she watched the reunion between Raet and Kontar.

Maaria had learned quickly over the years to read and pay attention to the most subtle of clues from the people around her.  The way they stood, the tone of their voice and all the emotional clues that tiny shifts in their eyes could give her.  The skill had kept her alive over the years and now it helped her here in the Court as well.  It added another piece to the puzzle seeing how comfortable and relaxed Raet and Kontar were in each other's company.  How so much stress seemed to fade away allowing peace and delight to take its place.

They seemed so happy to see each other that Maaria couldn't understand why Kontar wasn't present all the time.  A thoughtful frown appeared on her face for just a moment as she decided to try and puzzle this out for herself.

As Raet urged them to sit she greeted Kontar with a warm smile and a light tone, "Lord Abbasi it's a pleasure to finally meet you.  I've been looking forward to meeting Raet's other bonded ever since she described you to me."

The group settled around the table and Maaria was content to allow Raet and Kontar to speak it was clear that Raet was anxious to catch up with him.  As she soaked in the words passed between them she felt an internal tug and allowed her mind to wander for a moment.  In her minds eye she saw a glint of green and red bristling at one another as a thread of purple hovered as if trapped in between.  Her fingers itched for a frame and thread as she tried to get a better grasp of what she was seeing.

Only to be pulled back to the table by Raet's fingers on her wrist.  Her vision blinked back to the group and she couldn't help the sheepish grin on her face as the Queen's words registered.  She  shrugged even as one hand drifted to her leg almost unconsciously rubbing at the muscles around her knee.

"I have been trying to do better Lady."  Maaria gave Raet a small smile even as she ignored Vadik's snort, meeting Kontar's eyes with her own her tone becoming more teasing as she continued with a small laugh, "Our Queen and her Healer can be quite intimidating when they wish to be.  I'd be afraid to repeat the circumstances in which we met."  She gestured to Vadik and Raet both before leaning back in her chair.

Allowing the others at the table to react to her teasing statements she allowed her gaze to flit between them even as she recalled that brief glimpse into the abyss.  There was clearly more to the interactions between Raet and Kontar than she understood, a history she was missing.  So she settled in to try and figure it out with a quiet determination.  Raet was her Queen now and this was the first place that had felt like home since her Caste and jewels had been discovered by her family.

She settled a warm look on Kontar and decided to ask some questions in an effort to figure out what exactly lay between them.  Was the Red another woman, a rival?  Or did it refer to something else?  Visions could be so hard to decipher and she knew that before the day was over she was going to have to find time to weave a Tangled Web and see what she could see.

"Forgive my curiousity Lord Abbasi but do you have family here in the city?  Brothers or sisters?  Do you serve as an escort for someone or have your own business?"

She was eager to know more about the male sitting across from her and she let that friendly curiousity shine through even as another part of her analyzed his answers more carefully.  Listening for whispers or tugs from the Abyss that leant understanding to what she had seen.

Bond-Sister?

Kontar’s smile was genuine and immediate. Lady Nimir was bonded to his Queen and she acted as Raet’s Seer. Kontar felt a small surge of joy at having someone as deep in the Abyss as Lady Nimir in Raet’s court. While Raet was by no means invincible, the Black Widow would serve as another person to tend Raet and keep her from overworking herself. Raet was a good woman and a good Queen, but she gave of herself more often than she took for herself. Since the fallout with Lord Shingetsu and Nailah, Kontar feared that Raet would avoid her worries and problems by drowning herself in work.

Perhaps Lady Nimir would help Vadik prevent that from happening.

Kontar bowed before Maaria, only a touch less deeply than he would bow to Raet. “My number of sisters increases and my heart is glad for it.” he said warmly. He sat down beside Raet, across from Maaria, and folded his hands in his lap. He wanted to touch his Queen, but realized that might be unseemly in the presence of her other bonded. So he settled for the companionship of his bond-brother and bond-sister while he wondered what Cook had planned for lunch tonight. He was starving and looking forward to sharing a meal with all of them.

Things are good. Nima is well. My family is well. By the way, Hector would like you to stop into Casa de Atholi again soon. He put that soup on the menu right after you said you liked it. He’s been selling out nearly every day since.” Kontar said, reaching out to cover his hand with hers for a brief moment. His attention shifted to Maaria once more when Raet mentioned that they would have to fuss over her. Kontar smiled at Maaria once more and nodded.

It’s nice to meet you as well, Lady Nimir. I am rather good at fussing over my sisters, so I hope you’ll forgive my protective streak as we get to know each other. But I hope you’ll assist me in fussing over our Lady as well.” Kontar said, indicating Raet. There was no way Kontar would let their Queen off the hook so easily, especially when she nursed a broken heart. He resigned himself to the idea that everyone would be fussing over everyone else at some point in the near future. Vadik laughed. Kontar considered Vadik at Raet as part of his family as well. His circle was never, ever too large to include more people.

Maaria asked him about his family, causing Kontar to smile as he thought of them.

My family is from Damietta District, in Ta-Mehew Province. We lived there for many years, but we emigrated to Kemet a little over ten years ago. Now, my parents, my four sisters, and my nephews all live here. I’ve served as an escort for my sister, Nailah, since before she was became the High Priestess of Raej.” Kontar said, looking mildly embarrassed. While he hated turning conversations toward his sister’s position, it was always better to get it out at the start than later in the conversation. He also didn’t want to get into a prolonged discussion about Nailah in Raet’s presence. The situation with Lord Shingetsu had soured things between them and Kontar had not yet found a way to bridge the gap.

I’ve worked as a guard for caravans making their way to markets in Pruul, Shalador, and even Dhemlan. Recently, though, I’ve given a lot more thought to serving in a court.” Kontar said, looking at Raet.

If my lady would have me, of course.

She'd been gently distancing herself from the conversation as Kontar began to speak of his family.  She had heard of them before, of course, so she wouldn't be hearing anything new - and really, anything to NOT focus on Nailah and stew about her was a blessing.

So she had been unfolding her napkin to lay it across her lap when his words truly registered.

I've given a lot more thought to serving in a court.

Her eyes widened, looking up at him in surprise.  For a brief burst of time, she almost thought he was going to request to serve Abosomra, so as to be closer to his sister.  She had even braced herself for it.. so when he made it clear he meant her, she actually dropped her napkin into her lap.

"I... of course I would have, Kontar.  I'd have asked before but..."  But he had been Nailah's Escort.  And he hadn't shown any signs of WANTING to be in her court.  Wanting to come visit, and wanting to be in her court... those were two very separate things.  Her heart began racing, even as her hands reached out to settle on top of his again.

"I've wanted you here with us since I first laid eyes on you."  But she would never ask her Bonded, unless it seemedd they would be open to the idea.  And Kontar.. Kontar had very much been tied to his sister at the time.  A sister that despised her.  A powerful, Red-Jewelled sister, who was titled as the High Priestess of the Territory and thus could likely outrank her.

Especially now, with her tie to Syeira.

She squeezed her fingers against his hand, closing her eyes as she tried to keep her smile gracious and not.. childishly large.  "Vadik?"

"I'd say it's about damned time the two of you got over this hurdle.  Do you have any idea how aggravating it is to see her moping whenever you leave, Kontar?"

Raet's cheeks instantly turned a dusky red, her fingers starting to slide away from Kontar's hands so that she could resettle the napkin.  "I don't mope.."

"You do too.  And you usually end up starting a new flowerbed.. which we are running out of room for on the Eastern Side.  Now that he's here, I can finally start to relax a little more.

"... sometimes, Vadik, I wish to throw a spoon at you."

She sounded exasperated.  And as if she were trying not to laugh.  He was right.  She did mope whenever Kontar left.  But she'd swear it wasn't over jealousy.  She just.. missed him.  He came for visits, but it wasn't the same.  When Maseo had.. left.. Kontar had been a shoulder to cry on.  His heartbeat had helped calm her.

When Maseo had Bonded to Syeira, it was Kontar that had found her afterwards, and helped get her home even though she'd completely fallen apart.  For not being part of the Court.. he'd already done an Escort's job for her often enough in such situations that...

"Vadik?  Weren't you saying recently how you'd prefer to head the Guard?"
"Well yes. I find the current ass in that seat rather lazy."
".. And wouldn't you agree that Kontar has a great deal of experience in being an Escort?"
"Well obviously."
"So..."  She took a deep breath.  "Provided you pass Vadik's nose for it, Kontar.. would you be my First Escort so that Vadik can stop growling about the guard rotations?  Please?  It isn't as if you aren't used to Escorting a stubborn Dark Jewelled woman.. I know I am not as strong as Nailah, but surely between yourself and Maaria you can keep me from doing anything too silly.  Put us out of our misery on this.  I beg you."

Oh it was dirty marks.  But he'd already said he wanted to join the Court, and she.. wasn't going to give him a chance to reconsider.  Not when she'd been hoping he would choose to come to her Court of his own will for the entire year!  She beamed at him, trying to release the serious expressions she usually kept on her face.

Here, at this meal with her Bonded, she should be allowed to be herself.

Around just one of them, it was always easier.  But with all of them?  Well.. it wasn't easy yet.  But she was intent on making it get easier.  "Besides.. I'll need your help to keep this one from overworking herself.  Don't think I didn't notice you gazing out into the world, Maaria.  Visions and Seeing can wait until after lunch.  Don't make me rat you out to Cook."

Speaking of Cook.. the carts and trays were floating behind the woman as she happily bounced over to the Gazebo, laying a big kiss on Vadik's head before she began laying covered plates out in front of each of them.  "Enjoy the first course, my lovelies.  I've brought you a cooling appetizer of greens, roasted vegetables, and cold shredded chicken with chilled fruit juice.  The main course will be in a few minutes, so tuck in!"

"Cook, you're a marvel."
"Yes well.. eat!"

As the group settled around the table Maaria was relieved that Kontar seemed to be so happy to meet her.  A part of Maaria had been nervous at the prospect of meeting this male that Raet seemed to hold so dearly.

As he responded to Raet's assertation that she needed to be fussed over Maaria laughed softly, "I'm afraid Lord Abbasi that I am far more used to doing the fussing then being fussed over.  Keeping track of six brothers and sisters has made me an expert at keeping track of people.  I apologize in advance if I snarl a bit, but I am happy to help you keep an eye on our Queen.  She does sometimes work too hard."  She cast an apologetic look in Raet's direction as she said the last but one couldn't argue with fact, though she was probably guilty of the same.

The conversation turned to his family and as he mentioned that his sister was the High Priestess Maaria had a sudden surge of recognition.  Inwardly she kicked herself.  There weren't many in Raej who wore Jewels as dark as her own and while she hadn't met any of them she knew of a couple by name and reputation, the High Priestess Nailah Abbasi was one of them.  Kontar's name had seemed so familiar everytime she'd heard it she just hadn't connected the dots between the shared surnames.

Even as she mused outloud, "You must be very proud of her.  She wears the Red correct?"  Maaria already knew the answer and she also knew this was the Red she'd seen just moments ago.  Something that was only reiterated by Raet's withdrawal from the conversation at the very mention of her.  She allowed the topic of the conversation to change, but made a mental note to not just weave a Tangled Web later but to see what she could learn from Vadik and Kontar.  There was clearly more to the story then she was seeing.

Especially when her Queen reacted with such surprise to hear that Kontar wanted to join her court.  Watching Vadik tease Raet had a smile forming on her face as she couldn't help but laugh at Raet's threat to toss a spoon at him, "A shoe would be better Lady, cook might not appreciate her silverware being tossed willy nilly at heads.  Though I've found a good kick to the shins works better, it's harder to dodge."  She tossed a teasing grin at Vadik as she spoke.

Even as she joined the teasing there was a shadow in her eyes.  She missed bantering with her brother, just as much as she missed confiding in him or just talking.  A part of her wondered though if when she found him they would still have that easy relationship.  She hadn't seen him in years and he would be a mature Warlord Prince now.  She wondered sometimes if the reason she couldn't find him was because he didn't want to be found.

Taking a breath Maaria shoved those thoughts aside, now wasn't the time for her own personal issues.  She hadn't been in the Court long enough to have a good read on everyone's personalities and abilities but she'd heard Vadik complain enough to think that Kontar being Raet's First Escort would make a fine solution.  She'd 'see' what complications might arise from it later.

So she spoke up as Raet finished boxing him into a corner, meeting Kontar's eyes with her own, "It would be so good to have you here.  I'd like the chance to get to know you better and our Lady was looking forward to this lunch.  I'm sure having you here as her First Escort will put her mind at ease and it will be far easier for us to conspire to together if you are readily at hand.  Just in case our Lady works too hard of course."

Maaria caught the appearance of cook out of the corner of one eye even as she registered what Raet was saying.  She turned a startled look on her Queen, eyes wide for a moment, "Ah, I didn't think anyone had noticed."  She cleared her throat as cook approached, "I'll try to stay in the here and now Lady.  No need to rat me out, cook scolds almost as well as my mother and she's a Healer."

Kontar couldn’t hide his surprise. Not only did Raet want him here, but she wanted him to serve as her First Escort. Kontar leaned back in his chair and mouthed a silent “Wow.” as she processed the news. He’d never expected to have a Queen or really be part of a Court. Before he met Raet, the idea of serving a Queen or a Court that Nailah wasn’t tied to was simply unfathomable. But the longer he sat with Raet and his bond-siblings, the more right it sounded and felt. Vadik chimed in to talk about Raet’s moping and the Warlord looked at his Queen with further surprise.

Raet, if I had known you wanted me here, I would have been here. I thought it would be presuming too much to ask to serve in your Court. I figured that you would tell me what you needed from me, so I waited. I should have taken Nima’s advice sooner.” Kontar said. This time, he took her hands and lifted them to his lips, kissing her knuckles softly. He should have said that he needed to think it over. He should have said that he needed to talk to Nima and make sure that she wanted to follow him on this path.

Very well, my lady. I accept. Yes, I’ll stay. I’ll be your First Escort. I would be a guardsman if that was what you needed. But I’ll stay.” Kontar said.

He would make Nailah understand. There was nothing else for it.

Once the acceptance of his new role was settled, Maaria chimed in to as about Nailah. Kontar smiled at the mention of his sister. His initial warming to Maaria had to be tied, in part, to the fact that she wore the same jewels as his eldest sister. Still, Maaria had asked a question and Kontar felt it necessary to answer.

We are all very proud of her. She left home when I was about fifteen, determined to serve at the highest level in Kemet. I am saddened that Lady Menefer had to return to the Darkness, but Nailah has been an exemplary shepherdess to our people.” Kontar said to the Black Widow.

She and Raet both work hard and take little for themselves. But Nailah has others to watch out for her now. My duty is to tend to our Queen and aid this Court to the best of my ability. I’m ready to get started.” he said. He was a little concerned about Raet’s admonition to Maaria and decided that he would just have to watch out for both women, snarly or not. Raet was his and she was Raet’s. Maaria was an addition to his family, instead of a subtraction to Raet’s focus. They would all keep their Queen safe.

Cook arrived with the first course and Kontar smiled at the older woman, glad that he’d get to enjoy her cooking on a daily basis. He needed to arrange getting his things moved into the palace and talking to his sisters, but that would come in time. The first course was served.

Kontar dug right in.

She does sometimes work too hard.

Raet put on a mock scowl... though it quickly melted beneath the smile that wouldn't stay off her face.  She couldn't help it.  All three of her Bonded were here.  And now.. now that Kontar had not only asked to join her Court, but accepted her offer of him becoming her First Escort..

She felt giddy.  She felt as if nothing could go wrong, ever again.  It was a lie of course.  The world loved to cause problems - but for now she would enjoy the warmth and the joy.  For now she would push aside worries or concerns in order to just enjoy the presence of her beloved Bonds.  Each of them had chosen to join her.  Each of them had chosen to stay.

Of course, then Maaria had to go and ruin it with her statement on how it would be easier for the three of them to gang up on her.  She scowled, pointing a fork at each of them.  "If you go overboard... I'll.. I'll... Honestly I have no idea what I'll do.  I don't think I've ever successfully gotten away with anything."

Vadik snorted, shaking his head.  "She really couldn't.  She's a terrible sneak."
"That's... sadly true."

Raet laughed, and tucked into her meal.  The world might try to catch up to them later.  It might try to make things worse.  It might try to ruin her days, and it may even manage to do so on occasion.  Truthfully though.. at this moment?  Not even fucking Nailah Abbasi could get her to be too annoyed.

Because Kontar.. Kontar was here.  "We have to talk about where you'll be staying Kontar.  Will you stay here at Court, or will you be staying with Nima?"  She beamed.  "Or will Nima join you here?  What of you Maaria?  Have you anyone you wish to bring here?  Vadik doesn't bring his playmates to meet me."

"Oh darkness no.  You'd have me married within a week."
"It would make an honest man of you, Vadik."
"Spare me."

She laughed.  And that was how the evening went, with laughter, and joy.  Because finally, she had all of her Bonded together.. and knew they would stay.

Maaria laughed softly as Raet threatened them with a fork.  She didn't think anyone had ever threatened her with a piece of silverware before.  She shook her head slightly, warm amusement in her eyes and a teasing note to her voice as she said, "If you're going to sick them on me it seems only fair to return the favor."

The conversation turned to whether Kontar would move into the palace and Maaria was certain he probably would.  She was partly excited at the thought, it would make the Queen happy at the very least but she wondered how the Red jewel she'd seen earlier would feel about it.  She pushed the thought aside for the moment, there was nothing she could do about whatever tension existed between Raet and Kontar's sister until she understood the situation better.  Which was part of the reason that she hoped he did move in, it would be far easier to ask him questions if he was in the palace, it would also be easier to get to know him and hopefully form a working relationship with him.

As Raet asked if there was anyone she wished to bring with her to the Court Maaria hesitated for a moment.  The last letter she'd received from her mother had informed her that her youngest brother Jabari had made his Offering and was preparing to head for Kemet with one of the caravans.  Her mother had asked Maaria to keep an eye on him while he was in the city but she wasn't sure she wanted him here

It wasn't that she didn't love her little brother, because she did, she loved all of her siblings.  It was just that Jabari could be . . . a bit much.

Her little brother was capable of being very charming when wanted to be, more than able to sweep a woman off her feet.  He could also be arrogant and mean spirited toward people that he felt had insulted him or that he just viewed as 'lesser'.  Landen's and slaves were among that group and not even his family had been spared his tongue on several occasions.

His beliefs and actions worried Maaria, she was afraid that one day they were going to get him into trouble he couldn't get out of.  Still every attempt she'd made to speak to him about the possible consequences of his behavior had been shrugged off with glares or simply ignored all together.  Her father insisted that life experience would teach the 20 year old better, Maaria just wasn't sure he'd learn without a hard lesson and she didn't want him to have to learn that way.  She cared far too much about her younger siblings to want them to be faced with trials and tribulations.  She'd made a promise in her twins memory to keep an eye on their siblings and make sure they were safe and happy.

So she answered after a moment of hesitation, "I received a letter from my mother this morning saying that my youngest brother will be arriving soon.  He's indicated he'd like to train as a guard or an escort and since I told my mother I would be in the city for the foreseeable future she's asked me to keep an eye on him and to keep him out of trouble.  If you'd allow him to stay for a short time while he gets settled in the city?"

She didn't want anyone at the table to think she was taking advantage of her position in the court to help her family so she continued with, "It wouldn't be for too long just until he finds a place of his own to stay."  The word hopefully went unsaid, there was only so much of her little brother she could handle.

Kontar raised a hand to cover his mouth, both to stifle a laugh and keep his food in, when Raet threatened them with her fork. The Queen was fierce in her anger and hurt; Kontar had seen it for himself. But he also knew that she wasn’t used to being cared for by those bonded to her. She talked a good game, but she would get used to being taken care of just as Kontar would get used to being taken care of by his Queen.

The next forkful of food was nearing his mouth when Raet asked him where would stay. Kontar lowered his fork and made a decision. Nailah would not like it, but it was time for him to start living his own life. This day was long in coming and Kontar couldn’t push it aside to spare his sister’s feelings. Not when his bond with his Queen was so new and ready to be explored. Yes, this was the right thing to do.

I would like to stay here, my lady, if you have room for me. I want to be near you, all of you. Family grows, not shrinks. I would like to, in time, fold all of you into my family. I want to make Asyut District strong. ” Kontar said.

As for Nima, I need to talk to her. We’re in a good place but we haven’t discussed a major step like this. I know that if she joins me, NIma will want to earn a place in this Court. She will not be content with simply being here. She’s wonderful with animals, especially birds. And she has hoped to meet you, my lady. She encouraged me to take this step for for some time, but I was the one who needed to come to the decision.

I’m glad that I did.
” he said, looking at the assembled.
