Appearance
Play By: Izabel Goulart
Distinguishing Features:
Raet's eyes are well known.  To some, they are disconcerting.  She always, ALWAYS looks people in the eyes.  And her eyes seem to drill down into the very meat of the being she looks into, as if she is weighing their soul's worth.  To others, her gaze is a measure of peace, for they have been weighed, measured, and found worthy.  Raet herself is seemingly unaware of this fact, as she seems to accept everyone she meets for who they are.  It is very rare that she speaks aloud any judgement on someone without good reason.
She is confident in her movements, though she lacks the nimble grace that others might associate with someone of her build.  Her movements, instead, are meant for practicality and efficiency.

Personality

Personality:
Raej has many troubles.  After the purge there were so few Blood left that there certainly could not be enough Queens to rule as they should.  Raet has grown up seeing uncommon castes ruling, and while she does not begrudge them this, she also feels that there is something missing from her beloved home because of the necessity.  This does not mean that she has an innate sense that no one else could rule... she quite obviously agrees with Odji on many things, and believes he rules very well.  No, inherently, she believes that there should be more influence from Queens because of how they service the land and the people.  It is their duty to rule, and the land could only benefit from it.  Still... there are some Queens who should have no land to rule, in her opinion... and having Odji lead them all ensures that those who should will, and those who should not do not.

Raet is young, and she has her ideals.  But she also tends to be very thoughtful before responding to any given situation, provided she is not overly surprised by the subject matter.  This thoughtfulness has earned her the love of those who believe they are ignored - for Raet ignores no one.  From the jeweless baker to the red jeweled black widow, all are able to speak to her of their concerns, and all will leave her presence feeling they were heard.  Even Landen are able to voice their concerns and feel that Raet has heard them... though she does her very best to ensure that no one realizes just how uncomfortable Landen make her.
Fortunately, Raet's habit of always looking people in the eye makes most unaware of her discomforts and fears.  She is known for being a confident little queen, and her willingness to impart harsh penalties for transgressions has ensured that none mistake her compassion and kindness for weakness.  When someone has committed a crime grave enough for her attention, she is inclined to ensure that not only is the Price high, it is an example of why such actions should not be committed.
Known to all, Raet does not enjoy emotional conflicts in those that circle her.  It is seen as a kindness, her desire to fix and mend the emotions of those nearby... but in truth, it is a selfish desire.  Conflicting emotions are... distracting.  The man swallowed by grief has her sympathy... but if he is drowning so loudly that she cannot think, how can she do her job effectively?  For this reason, she will make subtle... nudges to the emotions of those with issues.  She knows others might see this as... well, unethical at best... but in the end, it is best for everyone.  A man drowning in grief could all too easily fall to a killing rage, and the black widow with enough spite to catch her attention could all too easily cause harm.  So she cultivates the personality of someone who cares enough to try to heal them... and during her conversations, will very subtly make efforts to make them more inclined to obey.

Likes:
  • 1. Gardening.  It may seem cliche, and childish... but Raet loves her little garden.  Feeling her fingers sink into dark soil and encourage growth brings her a sense of peace and accomplishment.  This is often her way of retreating from pressure and stress.
  • 2. Fixing Problems for Commoners.  She has a genuinely caring nature... and while she understands the necessity for a ruling body to make decisions that may make life more difficult for the average commoner, she loves to help make their lives easier where she can.  When a problem is brought to her attention - perhaps a child is injured during one of the seasonal floods, she always feels a sense of satisfaction for ensuring that these problems are taken care of without burdening the families over much.
  • 3.  History - It may be an unusual hobby... but Raet enjoys learning of the past and the lessons it can teach her.  There are so many instances in the modern day where she can point at a historical document and find that there was an example to prove that the action would not have worked.  Because of this, she tries to recall precedent, and how it could impact whatever decisions she makes.
Dislikes:
  • 1.  Dismissing others -  Those that dismiss the thoughts of others because of status ... annoy her.  There is a natural rank and file to society, of course.  But that does not mean that a commoner's opinion is worthless.  They may, in fact, have a great deal of insight.  The inability of some to recognize this irks her.
  • 2.   Addictions - Addictions are a symptom of suffering and poor will power.  People turn to addictions to escape their troubles, but the drugs or drinks do not remove the problems, and thus only cause more.  When she can get the time, she often tries to find ways to assist those under her care with their issues... though rarely directly.  This is not due to her own caution, but a caution instilled in her and to her through the mentoring of other Queens and Odji himself.
  • 3.  Hasty Reaction -  She still remembers when the territory queen died, for she was only 14.  The reactions from so many were... unacceptable, and would lead to only more suffering.  She herself grieved, but she did so privately.  She tried to come to peace with the situation, and find some sort of meaning in it.  Privately, she agrees with Odji that the Landen are a problem.  While part of her greatly regrets what that will likely lead to, she sees little recourse, for the Landen are too many and have already proven that they are not happy with the Blood ruling.
Fears:
  • 1.  Betrayal - Above all, Raet fears betrayal.  When she was ten years old, her mother and father were slain by Landen.  These Landen had lived and worked near her family for years with no ill intentions.  They had never been a threat, and therefore, her family did not expect the violence that rained down upon them.  When Raet learned about how her parents died, she was devastated.  Her family were not rulers.  They had not done anything to earn such ire.  She thanks the Darkness that her little sister was visiting her uncle that day, or she would have lost even her.  It was the first time she had ever viewed the Landen as a true threat, and that memory has stuck with her.
  • 2.  Landen -  Though she will perform her work for both Blood and Landen, and gladly... some part of her fears being out amongst them.  She isn't very happy with herself for the fear.  Caution is one thing, but the fear she feels when surrounded by Landen is maddening.  She constantly reminds herself that the Landen who lash out have been treated badly in many instances... that she has not done so.  But the memory of her family's deaths has left its mark.  She does her best to hide this weakness from all others, though she's fairly certain that Syeira, at least, is aware of it.
  • 3.  Not being loved for her Self -  Surely it is not an uncommon fear, she tells herself.  Surely many queens worry that they are loved only for the charisma their caste contains, and not for the contents of their souls.  As common as she believes it must be, as certain as she is that she is not alone in this worry... she often worries that any who show her love do so because they see a Queen... and not because they see Raet.  The exceptions to this, of course, are her family.  But even they, she worries, love her only because of her caste... at least a little.  She was not raised among them, after all...
Craft Strengths:
  • 1.  Emotional Healing - Raet's gaze is often the most memorable thing about her looks that others can recall.  There is a reason for this. Raet showed an aptitude for this particular Queen Craft early on, often able to look a person in the eye and know whether they were feeling guilt or worry.  She would always try to soothe the hurts... and avoid those who felt 'dangerous' to her.  As she grew older, some of that avoidance would transfer into her gaze when she saw those who embraced their more malevolent ambitions.  She is not above trying to subtly alter those emotions to try to nudge these individuals towards a better path... but she would never admit it out loud.
  • 2. Queen's Touch -  Whether this is because of her skill in emotional healing, or has developed of its own volition, none could say.  What they could say is that it was never more evident than when a Warlord was ready to turn to violence to avenge a perceived insult against his kin.  She laid her hand upon his shoulder, and the very aggression in the air seemed to bleed away.  She whispered her calming words, turning her attention towards his target before reaching out to clasp hands with the man and request that both sit with her to work out their differences.  Many thought it very well done.  She only admitted her nervousness and fear during the situation to Odji and Syeira afterwards.
Craft Weaknesses:
  • 1. Defensive Shielding -  Because of how sheltered she was kept most of her life, Raet has never pursued more knowledge of defensive craft.  She has been aware nearly all her life that she will never be truly unguarded.  Even if she were never granted her own district or province to rule, Odji and Syeira would always be certain to look out for her in lieu of her parents' death.  She often feels foolish if anyone makes note of the fact that she does not make shields... but better to be seen as confident of her escorts than to make a shield so weak a child could smash it.
  • 2.  Telekinetic Craft has always been a problem... sure, she can make that cup lift and go to the other table.  But managing to keep it upright and keep the liquid contained within?  It rarely goes well.  The basic movements are there, but the fine control needed to not break delicate objects is not.  She does all she can to avoid having to use this particular skill in public... it's simply too embarrassing.

History:
Born to a common family in lower Raej, Raet's caste showed itself within a few weeks of her birth.  Raet was taken away at the age of one to be raised by another Queen, as is typical in Raej amongst the traditional families.  Her family was common, yes, but very traditional.  As the years grew, Raet did not resent her family for their choices.  This system ensured that she had someone to learn from, as no one in their family had ever been a Queen before.

She went through her Birthright Ceremony with her family present of course, as well as the Queen.  She was gifted her Summer Sky, and even now remembers with joy and sadness the joy her father had when his paternity was declared.  He swept her up in his arms, twirling her about with uninhibited happiness.  Never, in all her life, has she doubted the love her parents held for her.

It was only two years later that they died.  Not through illness, or accident... but through the most brutal of deaths a young girl could imagine.  Frustrated and angry over their treatment, a small crowd of Landen surrounded her parents and a few others... and buried their tools in her parents' bodies.  She was learning how to harness her gift with emotions when the news was given to her... and it was the last time she ever let her emotions run away with her.  The terror and grief of the situation swept her up, racing through the room with all the strength of her lone jewel.

From that day on, she put her all into her studies.  She was going to change things.  She was going to make it so that no one ever felt their only real option was to lash out at those who had not harmed them.  At first, it was idealism.  She'd be the best Queen, so that the Landen could feel cared for and therefore not rebel in so hideous a fashion.

As time wore on, she began to realize it was more complicated than that.  She began to understand the drive for power and control that all creatures, Blood and Landen both, shared.  She began to quietly agree with Odji that their first duty was to the Blood... but she never quite gave up on the Landen that she'd meet.  They were still living beings, and deserving of the same care that all individuals should receive.

Even still... she always found herself more inclined to forgive the Blood their transgressions than any Landen.  She found herself having to actively work to ensure her judgements were based on actual actions instead of perceptions.  Because of her introspective moments, she began to be known as a thoughtful, well-received Queen.

Her Offering is still an event she regularly reflects on.  She doesn't know whether everyone comes out of their Offering with such a clear idea of who they are meant to be, but she did.  In her dreams, she can still remember the caress of the Green depths across her soul, and the whisper of her purpose.  Try as she might, she can never remember the exact sound of the voice that whispered to her... but she treasures that memory down to the deepest and darkest recesses of her soul.

When she was chosen to take over for the District where Kemet itself was located, she was thrilled... and nervous.  Some said it was her very ability to think things through before choosing an action that had given her that extra little shove towards such a position... others that the Queen who was choosing to retire had always liked her from her time with the prior Territory Queen.  Whichever reason didn't matter all that much to Raet.

She was still thrilled to have been elevated to such a position.  She is also well aware of the danger that can come from it.  She was 14 when she lost her Queen and the court that had helped raise her to Landen Butchery.  Despite her public kindness and compassion... her new position has given her teeth.  She will not tolerate threats to her, her people, or her land.  If a Landen so much as flicks eyes wrong in her direction, she is ready to set her escorts upon them... though habit makes her do her best to judge whether it is intention or merely uncontrolled emotion that causes such a flicker.

~Fall of 192~  Raet's lover, Maseo no Shingetsu, is sent to Dena Nehele by Syeira Neferet and Nailah Abbasi.
~Fall of 193~  Maseo no Shingetsu breaks Raet's heart, due to the interference of Kontar Abbasi.
~Early Summer 194~  Kontar Abbasi dies of heart failure (AkA Trance the assassin killed him at the request of Maseo no Shingetsu).

Character in Play:
Remember, Raet... when it comes time for you to have a Court all your own... it is all about instinct.  You, and they, will know.  She took a deep breath, looking at the reflection in the mirror.  She had affixed a traditional scarf around her hair... but she was leaving her face open for others to see.  She wanted to See, and to be Seen.

Kemet, and the caretaking of it, were hers.  She was going to face the truth of that head on.  The idea of making her own Court was appealing.. the idea of Bonding to anyone was slightly terrifying.  She'd seen Bonded males before... and the depth of their emotional resonance was awe inspiring.  What if she was unworthy of such a gift?

Resolutely, she refocused her thoughts.  Going into this with nerves on edge would make it unpleasant for everyone, and she already knew there would be some unpleasantness from those disappointed for not being Chosen.

Dark eyes swept over those gathered before her, her steps sure and confident as she made her way towards her chair.  With studied care, her knees bent and allowed her to settle within it.  "Thank you, friends, for coming to see me this evening."  Let them see you, Raet... and speak to them as you would speak to them if they were already yours.  Again the memories of her mentor came to her mind, her eyes closing for a moment in remembrance.  "Transitions can often be difficult.. but I assure you that I intend to see us through with as few hiccups as possible.  Remember that above all, I want to serve our people in the best way I can."  She set her hand to her heart, bending her head just a bit.

That was a Queen's job... to rule, and to be Ruled by the needs of the land and the people upon it.  She knew that not every Queen saw this as their purpose... but she did.  She could remember all too clearly her Offering, and the purpose she'd gained from it.  She was not just a Queen to ensure the health of the Land... she was a Queen to heal the hearts of those within it.

That was true upon her Offering... and it was true now.  Her eyes slowly swept from person to person amongst those in front of her.  The first to step forward almost surprised her.  Vadik... her cousin.  He smiled at her, reaching for her hand.  She felt her own lift, almost as if she couldn't help herself.  He bent over her, his lips touching her fingers.

"My Queen."

She smiled, a small burst of joy filtering between herself and Vadik.  She hadn't seen him in three years... and at the time, they'd both been rather busy.  Her hand clasped with his, squeezing lightly for a moment.  She had been concerned that she would have a stranger be the first to step forward for her... but this was much better, in her mind.  She would have at least one familiar face.

With a small amount of regret, she let her cousin's hand fall from hers as he moved to stand beside her, looking out with that protective bent to his jaw that she'd seen on occasion.  He would guard her, even without her asking.  Her uncle looked quite pleased... though he did not step forward.  None of the rest of her family did.

That wasn't unheard of.  She turned her gaze across others, watching as a few stepped forward.  She greeted each of them warmly, freely sharing her hope and joy through each touch amongst them.  Let her Court be founded in trust and warmth.  Harsh reality could, and likely would, invade later.  For now... for now she would let the small bloom of Hope grow as it would.
