Personality

Personality:

Nailah Abbasi is, at first glance, an attention-seeker bent on keeping the limelight upon her. Dig deeper, however, and one finds a woman who understands the mantle and power and authority she wields among her people. She is confident and poised when she speaks to her congregations, urging them to think and to dedicate themselves daily to understanding Mother Night’s purpose for their lives and the contemplating the greater mysteries of the Darkness. Her movements and gestures are practiced as though she is ready to speak or give counsel at any time. She seeks the will of the Darkness and Mother Night at all times for herself and for those around her.

During arbitration, she is quiet and contemplative of her both parties’ words and body language, using craft to cut through self-deceptions or other falsities that will impede her ability to help. Nailah has, over time, gleaned the secrets and weaknesses of Princes, Queens, and Jewelless Blood. She works without cease to bring every member of the Blood (and even some Landen) closer to peace so that they will work that much harder for the greater good and glory of Raej.

Only with her siblings and, most importantly, her twin sons does Nailah’s voice or laugh rise above the dulcet tones she reserves for the people of Raej. She laughs loudly when playing with her son's, but isn't above using a bit of Craft to enhance their bedtime stories each night. Their smiles brighten her life enough and make it easier for her to rise each morning to repeat the process.

Nailah enjoys her moments with others, but solitude allows her the reflection necessary to better herself. She basks in the the quiet moments when no one is around to seek her wisdom, question her decisions, or request blessing from the Darkness. She spends the bulk of her days and nights barraged with the emotions and desires of hundreds, if not thousands, of people so any time she receives to herself, she spends reading, writing her next sermon, or bathing the remains of the day from her body. It is in these moments that she feels most herself and most in tune with the Darkness that has blessed her with more than she could ask for.

Service is the bedrock of her life. She will continue as long as Mother Night allows.

Likes:

  • 1. Her Children - Nailah loves her entire family, but her twin sons, Tsekani and Bakari, are the first part of all her joy. The burdens of her duties as a Priestess are made tolerable whenever she can read to them, tuck them into bed, or even answer their questions about the world around them. She has sacrificed sleep, love, and comfort in her pursuit of power but giving her sons the best life possible makes it all worthwhile.

  • 2. Public Speaking - Many people fear public speaking, fear having the attention of the masses focused upon them. Nailah relishes the spotlight and the chance to reach the people of Raej and other lands with her words. She is the Voice of the Darkness in Raej and this sacred duty brings her pride and honor. She is ready to speak at any moment, though she won't do so just to hear the sound of her own voice.

  • 3. Politics - Knowing who holds power, how it is used, and how to gain it fascinates Nailah on a subconscious level. She’s attended District Court and Territory Court meetings to listen to petitions and just learn a bit more about the issues facing various areas of Raej.

    Dislikes:

  • 1. Pregnancy - Nailah loves her sons with all her heart, but she despises being pregnant with the same intensity. The disconnection from her Craft is bothersome, yes, but not nearly as much as the illness, lack of energy, and upsetting of her center of gravity. Two children on her first try is more than enough.

  • 2. Chaos-  Chaos is the antithesis of the orderly life Nailah has built for herself. Everything and everyone has a time and a place. Disruption of her routines is a deep annoyance; disruption of her ceremonies is enough to drive the High Priestess into a rage.

  • 3. Sleeping - Sleep is a necessary component of life but if Nailah could avoid it, she would. Sleep takes up time that could be used preparing her next speech, checking in on her junior priestesses or making connections that will aid her in the future. She sleeps for five to six hours a night, no more. She has much to accomplish.

    Fears:
  • 1. Enclosed spaces - Nailah prefers ceremonies and chambers with enough space for people to spread out and where she can walk around them without feeling smothered. Her large family lived in a small home for many years and it often felt like they moved and lived atop one another. Being trapped tight spaces (or in areas where she cannot move) steal the breath from her lungs and will drive Nailah into a fight-or-flight response to escape.

  • 2. Assassination- The last High Priestess vanished without a trace. Raej is more cultured than other territories, but they still have slavery and murder. She is a rising star in the Territory and Priestesses are as prone to jealousy as anyone else. The idea of being murdered and leaving her sons behind keeps her awake at night.

  • 3. The Landen- They outnumber the Blood. They seek parity without understanding what the Blood endure to maintain their power. They seek rights without the accompanying responsibilities. Nailah does not hate the Landen, but they are a clear and present danger to her people. They are too many, and the Blood too few, to live together in true peace.

    Craft Strengths:

  • 1. Advanced Communion with the Darkness - Nailah specializes in guiding subjects under her care to a deeper connection with the Darkness during Communion. She can aid others in descending into their well of power with ease, helping them refill their Jewels in half the normal time.

  • 2. Reading Emotions - Nailah reads emotions the way many read psychic scents. It takes barely a look and a moment of concentration to discern the dominant emotion in a person standing before her. She also gets a vague idea of the source that sharpens within prolonged contact. Emotions to become easier to read the more familiar she is with the person and she describes them as scents of their own (anger is spicy, rage is tart and hot, etc.)

    Craft Weaknesses:
  • 1. Emotion Manipulation  - The Darkness gave her the ability to sense emotions, but denied her to ability to shape them to her desire. One thousand attempts have netted one thousand failures. This forces Nailah to rely on her natural charisma and charm to mold consensus to her views.

  • 2. Conjuring Objects - Vanishing objects is easy; Nailah's finds it draining and difficult to bring them back. If she cannot hide something within the folds of her robes, she will have an attendant carry it for her.

    History:

Rashida and Baahir Abbasi loved each other from the moment they met. They pair grew up together in Damietta and bonded over their shared status as Jewelless Blood. Neither person’s family had seen a Jeweled member of their family in three generations. They did not consider themselves hampered or lacking for this deficit; they simply redoubled their efforts.

Nailah’s birth was the start of a large family. When they realized her that she would grow to be a Priestess, Baahir and Rashida recognized that she would be the first member of their family in generations to be granted jewels by the Darkness. The Village Priestess of Damietta, Malia, seized on the opportunity to take on a protege that she could mold from a young age. She showed favor to the Abbasi’s, spending nights at their home and blessing their attempts to have further children. When she asked to begin Nailah’s training in time for her offering, Rashida and Baahir considered it yet another blessing on their family.

Malia a stern, yet fair, teacher who started Nailah’s education with the proper method of keeping a temple clean and ready for worship. She spent hours every day trying to meet the elder Priestesses standards. Most nights, she was so exhausted she could barely stand, so Nailah woke earlier to assist Malia, attend to her duties and aid her Mother with any lingering matters with her remaining time.

Her father and the elder men of the village told stories about the times before the Purge. They explained the Blood’s duty to shepherd the Landen and Nailah absorbed these lessons, resolving that she would guide her people without regard to the strength of her Jewels. She also took to heart the responsibility of watching over her younger sisters. She and Theoris were fast friends, born only three years apart. Together they balanced out the wilder twins, Masika and Rehema, who joined just a few years later.

Her Birthright Ceremony was attended by only her parents. In truth, they expected that Nailah would not receive a Birthright Jewel as it was the custom for their family. In the fourteen hours her ceremony lasted, Nailah believed that Mother Night spoke directly to her soul, whispering a message that she contemplated to this day. She emerged with her Blood Opal clutched in her small hand, and the family was overjoyed. Considering this a change in the family’s fortunes, they feasted well that night.

Nailah was swept up in Malia’s plots and ideas as the elder Priestess laid the groundwork for her personal advancement. A young Priestess with a dark jewel was an excellent asset; Malia laid further responsibilities and demands upon Nailah, praising her sparsely when she succeeded, but always taking the time to explain how to do better each day. Nailah learned from the older woman that her appearance played a role in her reception; proper posture, correct diction, and constant reverence of Mother Night’s will reshaped the younger woman’s worldview. Her parents’ lessons were sharpened and expanded to include watching over her fellow Priestesses. Malia noted it and asked her why she would aid her rivals.

My sisters are not my rivals.

Not yet. But they will be soon.

Over time, Nailah realized the truth in her mentor’s words. She applied herself to her tasks, practicing troubling areas of ceremony and craft during her free time while the other girls gossiped. Her talent with reading emotions aided her in mediating disputes between other Priestesses. She didn’t make everyone happy but she kept a number of situations from escalating and reaching Malia’s ears.

She learned that Theoris and Masika did not receive a birthright, but Rehema did. She returned home for the birth of her brother, Kontar. Nailah hoped to serve her village and be close to her family once more, but Malia had other plans. When Malia was appointed to the post of High Priestess of the Damietta District, Nailah became her right-hand, instructing new Priestesses and watching those that crossed her mentor. Nailah, for her part, studied the relationships between the Priestesshood and the other castes.

Her parents attended her Offering Ceremony, performed by none other than Malia. Once more, Nailah felt Mother Night speak to her, telling her that it was her job to raise not just herself, but her people as well. She found herself gifted with a Red Jewel and silently thanked Mother Night and the Darkness for the internal strength to pursue her new agenda. While she was thankful for Malia's lessons, she recognized that the elder Priestess was chose her not just for the strength of her Jewels, but to hide her own deficiencies with Ceremonial Craft. Whenever she was granted the chance to speak, Nailah seized the opportunity to show off her ability with Ceremonial Craft, especially where the Birthright and Offering ceremonies were involved.

Malia sensed her control over Nailah diminishing and sent her home, hoping it would humble the younger woman and make her beg to return. Instead, Nailah returned and displaced the Priestess who’d taken over in her mentor’s stead and chipped away at Malia’s influence in the area. She preached a message that involved Mother Night’s desire to see her children actively seeking her guidance and held communions for all who wished them. This lead to her a chance meeting with Lord Badru Khoury, a Warlord visiting her temple in the course of his duties on behalf of the District Queen. Their time spent together lead to love, followed by Nailah’s pregnancy. The pregnancy was hard on her and Nailah vowed to herself that she’d not put herself in the position of being without her Craft for several months. She delivered her sons, Bakari and Tsekani, but they were conjoined at the hip upon birth. Worse, Nailah fell ill and was unable to care for her boys, suffering from fever and delirium. The intervention and skill of the Black Widow Healer, Kesare Fuentes, separated and saved both children, and put Nailah in the Dhemlanese woman’s debt.

Nailah arrived in Kemet ten years ago as Prince Odji rose to power. The High Priestess Menefer hoped to use her to blunt Malia’s growing influence in the area. Nailah worked against both women to establish herself as a future candidate for the position of High Priestess. She convinced Menefer to reassign Malia to Damietta prior to Menefer’s own disappearance. While Nailah is suspicious of the circumstances, she knows better than to make an issue of it.

An assassin attempted to kill her several months ago, but was foiled when Badru threw himself in front of her before she could get her shield up. He died in her arms and her sons were robbed of their father. She does not know who was responsible for the attack, but believes it was Malia’s revenge for her exile. Nailah intends to repay her in kind for the blow struck against her family.

    Character in Play:

Peace, Nai. You’ll wear a hole in the floor before the boys return if you keep this up.” Kontar, her brother said as he leaned against a wall inside his older sister’s office within the Temple. He’d come to keep  her company on this blessed and difficult day. To his mind, she needed it more than his nephews.

Nailah sensed his worry from across the room without her craft. Kontar worried about everyone except himself. It made him sweet. Loyal. An excellent defender and confidant. Sometimes, however, it made him too damned perceptive for his own good.

Nailah rolled her eyes, noting just how little help her younger brother was for her nerves. Her pacing back and forth slowed, but did not abate. Her brother meant well but he couldn’t understand the depth of her worry, not today. Her sons, Bakara and Tsekani, had already started their Birthright Ceremonies. Her boys competed with each other for her affections, despite her constant reassurances that she loved them both (and would love them) no matter the results of the ceremony. Bakari had boasted, privately, that he would match his Mother’s Blood Opal. She’d smiled at him and ruffled his hair, hoping that he was right.

Tsekani made no boasts, but waiting until his brother was occupied elsewhere before coming to her.

Mother, will Papa be proud, too? he asked. It took all of Nailah’s discipline not to pull him into a crushing hug and rock him gently until he believed that, yes, Papa would be proud of him regardless of the outcome. Despite his more gentle nature, Tsekani was getting older. Even now, he did not always want the other children to see his mother displaying affection toward him. He did not want to be thought of as a “baby”.

Nailah’s pacing resumed its intensity. Kontar sighed, his words having fallen upon deaf ears.

They’ve already been cleansed. The Priestess will lead each of them to the altar, suggesting that their clear their minds and focus. We’ve been over it a thousand times, so they know what to expect.” Nailah said, reviewing the steps in her mind.

They won’t have any questions. I answered a thousand of those, too, before today. I’ll have to arrange for training for both of them upon their return. I don’t want to waste time. But Bakari wants his party first.” Nailah said, as much to herself as to Kontar.

“Your son loves his parties as much as his mother loves her ceremony. He comes by it honestly.” Kontar teased. Nailah favored her younger brother with a withering gaze, but they both knew it was merely in jest. She loved her younger brother, though they disagreed on a number of things. More still, he was the most stable male figure in their life now that Badru was gone. Nailah took a deep breath. Kontar sensed her unease.

Badru would be proud of them. And of you, Nai.” he said. “Has the killer said anything?

No. He won’t give up the person who hired him. Badru’s killer won’t escape justice, but the man who held the knife will pay for it in interim.” she said.

If Malia is behind this, let me find her and do away with her. It would be easiest.” he said.

Nailah shook her head. Kontar sometimes thought in straight lines, considering the easiest solution the best. He’d kill for her if she asked him, but Nailah’s loyalty to her brother was also unwavering; she loved him too much to ask that of him.

Believe me, brother, I want her dead for this. She robbed my children of their father. But people know of our relationship. Should she die under mysterious circumstances, suspicion will fall upon me.” Nailah said.

For now, she is safely tucked away where I can reach her, back home. But if a time comes where her death will serve a greater purpose, believe that I will see it done.
