Appearance

Play By: Lucien Laviscount
Distinguishing Features:

Kontar’s bronze skin and dark eyes have earned him a number of second (and third!) looks from the opposite sex and even a few members of his own. He's 6'3" and possessed of a frame of wiry muscle, obtained from days of hard exercise and combat training. He has several scars gained in fights with thieves and brigands, and more than one gained in defense of his mother, his sisters, or his nephews.

Kontar’s most memorable feature, however, is his smile. His friends and lovers earn it with ease, and it’s always in sight whenever he’s spending time in the company of his nephews, Bakari and Tsekani.

Personality

Personality:

Kontar loves spending time in the company of his family and making new friends. These people earn his loud laughs, his bright smiles, his stream of endless bad jokes that only seem to make his nephews laugh. He teases his sisters mercilessly, but never maliciously. He strives constantly to make sure that his parents are taken care of, often planning the start of his days making sure that chores are done at their home before determining if his sisters need anything. This is balanced by spending quality time with his nephews or escorting them to see their mother when she is so busy at work that she forgets to return home.

When escorting a female he is unfamiliar with, Kontar obeys all facets of Protocol to avoid seeming improper. His temperament when escorting an unfamiliar female appears to be night and day from his dealings with those who have earned his friendship. He is not rude or curt, but he is insistent upon meeting deadlines and getting someone where they want to be on time. With males that he is not familiar with, Kontar strives to prove that he’s well-prepared and capable of handling any task set before him, as he wants to be a credit to his family and his older sister, Nailah, the High Priestess of Raej.

Kontar enjoys women and often spends time at his sister Theoris’s Red Moon House. She gives him two free visits per month, but the truth is that he doesn’t use them that frequently. Sometimes it’s just nice to speak to a woman that he isn’t related to about the things on his mind. He enjoys sex, but he has a deep respect for Red Moon women, as his own sister is one. To mistreat them is to mistreat her and he won’t stand for that from himself, or other men. Kontar’s reverence for the Priestesshood and Healers run just as deep, as two of his elder sisters claim those castes as well.

He reads at least two books per week when he can, though he’d read more if he had the time. He’s read about places like Dhemlan and Dena Nehele, but he’s not sure he’ll see them, as he fears his family’s implosion without his presence.

Kontar’s truest self shows anytime he is sparring or in combat. He is fiercely competitive when it comes to fighting and likes to test his skill when he can. He’s not afraid to lose; even losing teaches something. He’d rather lose 12 out of 13 fights for the knowledge he can gain and apply, than win 13 fights and get cocky.

Likes:

  • 1. Travel - Kontar was born with a wanderlust that pricks at his soul whenever he’s been in one place too long. Since his teenage years, he’s traveled across most of Raej and even briefly to Pruul in defense of a traders’ caravans. He eventually returns home with souvenirs for his nephews, but mostly Kontar just likes to see the sunrise from different places whenever he can.

  • 2. Combat - The savagery inherent in the Blood finds Kontar whenever he’s in a fight. He’s not above dirty fighting or learning how to incorporate new moves and techniques into his style. Aside from reading, it’s the only other thing he’d do all day without pause.

  • 3. Being an Uncle - Kontar was only fifteen when his nephews were born, but he’s loved them without fail since the moment he first laid eyes upon them. One of his favorite things to do is teach them little bits of self-defense so that they don’t get picked on by boys larger than themselves. Otherwise, sharing ice cream (and keeping it from their mother) is one of the highlights of his day

    Dislikes:
  • 1. Being late - Tardiness is a sign of disrespect. Kontar is obsessive about the time it takes to do most tasks, and he strives to handle personal business so that he’s not late for meetings, escorting Nailah, or generally being where he says he’ll be, when he means to be there. People who are constantly late irk him and usually lose his respect.

  • 2. Cats - These creatures bother him. Most of them are dirty and the sounds they make rend at the soul and the ears. Kontar avoids the places where he knows they’ll be, but the people who keep them as pets confuse the Warlord. How does one befriend a creature that merely tolerates one’s existence?

  • 3. Unkindness - Everyone has troubles and bad days in life. Everyone has bad things happen to them now and again. That’s no reason to for a poor attitude or attempting to tear others down. You can’t control what happens to you, but you can control how you react to it. The only way that people survive in this world is depending on the kindness of others, so it burns Kontar’s belly when people are cruel to each other just to make themselves feel better. Kontar is quick to call out a bad attitude and doesn’t long associate with people who continue to wallow in self-pity or mean-spirited behavior.

    Fears:

  • 1. Wasting his potential - When one of your sisters is a Dark Jeweled Territory High Priestess and the other is one of the most successful Red Moon Courtesans in recent memory, it’s easy to feel like you’ve fallen behind. Kontar doesn’t resent or envy his sisters, but he worries that he’s running out of time to find the thing that he can do better than anyone else.

  • 2. Choosing between his sisters - Ever since his was little, Kontar has noticed the sharp division in the family between his two sets of sisters. Nailah and Theoris have always been a unit, while Rehema and Masika have declared that it’s them against the world (the world being defined as Nailah and Theoris). Kontar fears that the day is coming when he’ll be forced to side with two of his sisters against the other pair. The idea pains him and so he looks for ways to diffuse any tension between them when he can.

  • 3. Failing his nephews - Kontar can live with angering his sisters if it comes to it. What he cannot abide is setting a poor example for Bakari and Tsekani. The boys have already lost their father and Nailah’s avoidance of discussing Badru with them  hurts them as much as it hurts Nailah to think about him. Kontar refuses to fail his nephews, whether it means not lying to them (even when it would spare them) or curbing his worst habits in order to model proper behavior to them.

    Craft Strengths:

  • 1. Telekinetic Craft  - Kontar has never been disarmed through the use of this craft. Once Kontar has handled a weapon for a few seconds, he does not need to concentrate to call it to his hand. Enemies have managed to knock his blade from his hand, attempting to go for the finishing kill, only to be surprised when he parries or blocks the seemingly deadly attack with the weapon they just took from him!

  • 2. Calming Rage - Kontar’s personality lends itself well to stemming the tide of stronger emotions around him. He can utterly blunt the cold rage of males possessing  jewels lighter than his own without their knowledge. For Males with jewels darker than his own find their rage softened somewhat, but they are immediately aware that he is using Craft.

    Craft Weaknesses:
  • 1. Reading Emotions- Growing up with five women, Kontar should be a master at reading subtle emotions and knowing when not to be “overly male” as Nailah puts it. Yet he is not. If it’s not apparent in body language or facial expression, Kontar doesn’t really pick up on it and Craft is no help. Many times, Nailah’s glare, Theoris’ quiet murmur, or Masika and Rehema’s tandem yelling are his only warnings that he’s strayed into dangerous territory.

Thrown objects have also been known to get the point across.

  • 2. Fine Telekinetic Craft - Kontar can lift his sword or a dagger with his Craft, but ask him to pick up a pebble lying atop his sword and he’s helpless. Kontar’s fine telekinetic control is practically non-existent despite several attempts to grow this ability.

    History:

Kontar Abbasi is the fifth and final child of Baahir and Rashida Abbasi, the surprise to cap their good fortune in birthing four strong and beautiful daughters. Baahir had already resigned himself to being outnumbered by the women in his family, so when Rashida announced that she was pregnant ten years after the birth of their eldest daughter, Nailah, Baahir readied himself for another daughter. When Kontar announced himself to the world, his father celebrated with a glass of a rum before spending the whole evening talking to his son until sunrise.

Kontar’s sisters loved him deeply and he loved them in turn. But even in his youngest years, he saw the divisions between them. Nailah and Theoris were always closer to each other than they were to Rehema and Masika, the twin terrors. Masika and Rehena, for their parts, prefered each other’s company over that of their older sisters. THe only thing both pairs had in common was their willingness to do anything necessary for their baby brother. Growing older, Kontar strove to act as the mediator and bridge between his dueling sisters, promising both himself and them that he’d never be placed in a position to choose between them.

At his Birthright Ceremony, Kontar prayed with Nailah in the hopes that he’d receive a jewel. While he did not see his parents, Theoris, or Masika as less for not having jewels, he hoped for his own in order to have something that was his, something that he didn’t owe to his older sister. His Summer Sky wasn’t as dark as Nailah’s Blood Opal but it was a step below Rehema’s rose and he treasured it.

Nurar, his family’s home village, was one of the busier villages in Damietta District and Kontar traveled with his father on some of his merchant trips. The bonding experiences they shared are memories that Kontar feels shaped the course of his life. It was on one of these trips that he met a Warlord named Badru Khoury  who took a shine to the young man and taught him the rudiments of combat. Kontar took to fighting like a fish to water, and soon he was accompanying Badru on trips across the whole of Raej, protecting caravans from bandits and seeing them safety to their destinations. A chance meeting between Nailah and Badru lead to their spending time together, which became love in short order. Kontar was glad to see Nailah and Badru happy and overjoyed when they  announced to the family that she was pregnant. The only person who appeared unhappy with the news was Masika, who felt that Nailah received too much attention for her dark jewels and her success as a Priestess.

In each city he visited, he stopped to pay respects at local temple in honor of Nailah, and he made small donations to certain Healers in honor of his sister Rehema. He often saved a portion of his payments, however, to visit a Red Moon House where his sister Theoris worked. Theoris often introduced Kontar to women she thought compatible with him and even today, he seeks Theoris’s advice when it comes to matters of the opposite sex.

Eventually, the lure of the road and Kontar’s wanderlust waned, driving him to move to Kemet where Nailah worked in the Temple under the High Priestess Menefer. Nailah performed his Offering herself, upholding a promise she’d made to him years before. He received the Purple Dusk and, while he would never hold the amount of power his sister did, Kontar enjoyed having a jewel in common with his other sister, Rehema.

When he turned twenty-four, tragedy struck the family hard.

Badru was slain defending Nailah from an assassination attempt. Kontar mourned his friend and mentor, but watched as Nailah threw herself into her work and her quest to gain status while her sons grieved. Knowing that they needed a strong male figure in their lives, Kontar worked to curb his worst habits and spent as much time as possible with the boys. When he wasn’t with them, he made himself Nailah’s permanent escort, to the chagrin of Masika and Rehema, who both felt that Nailah was using the tragedy to focus the family’s attention solely upon herself. This is the only time so far that Kontar has been genuinely angry at any of his sisters and he does not take insults against Nailah lightly.

His status has risen since Nailah’s ascension to the post of High Priestess of Raej. Kontar knows that his sister suspects her old mentor, Malia, of being behind the attack that killed Badru but he can’t sway her from the dark thoughts she voices now and again. He reminds her, gently, that her sons have lost their father but they still need their mother. Nailah glares but she listens and Kontar doesn’t press his advantage any further.

Sometimes it’s enough just to win today’s battles before taking on a new one tomorrow.

    Character in Play:

The chamber doors opened for two separate rooms at the same time and Kontar rose from the stone bench he’d been sitting on for the last half-hour. His nephews, Bakari and Tsekani, emerged from the rooms. Bakari was a Warlord Prince and it showed, even at eight years old, as he practically strutted across the room toward his uncle, right hand balled in a tight fist. He marched right up to Kontar and stopped as if looking at his uncle for the first time.

Mother Night blessed with the Purple Dusk, Uncle. Mother will be proud of me.” Bakari said, the words spoken as fact because Bakari fully believed them.

Tsekani, his twin brother and a Warlord like Kontar, attempted the same confident walk, but he didn’t have his twin’s natural grace. Tsekani appeared calm. He extended his arm and opened it to reveal a Summer Sky jewel.

We have the same birthright, Uncle.” Tsekani said, smiling at Kontar.

Now this is good fortune, my boys. Each of you has one of my jewels. The three of us will be a fearsome team, protecting the roads from bandits and escorting your mother from place to place. This is a serious duty. Are you both prepared for it?” Kontar asked.

As one, the boys nodded in affirmation at their uncle. To Kontar’s mind, it was a little unnerving. He’d seen Masika and Rehema do the same thing a thousand times. It unnerved whenever they did it, too.

Where’s Mother? I want to show her my jewel.” Bakari said.

She’s finishing up some paperwork, Prince Bakari. She wants to hear the entire story about your Birthright ceremony as soon as she’s done. For now, she’s given me permission to take you both to the market for a new toy.” Kontar said, silently cursing his sister and her damned “one more piece of paperwork” excuse. She’d started her paperwork to keep from worrying about the boys, but she’d lost track of time. Again.

Badru would be furious with her. He saw too much of his mentor and friend in his nephews sometimes. The hurt nearly stole his breath at tims, so how much harder was it for Nailah, who’d put these boys to bed each night but found no refuge in her own dreams?

But before we go toy shopping, I am going to have cake with Aunt Teo. Is there any man among you who would join me?” he asked, looking around the chamber as though there were fifty men in the area, rather than just the three of them.

Both boys raised their hands, jumping up and down and imploring him to pick them. As he always did, Kontar pretended to look around for suitable candidates to join him on this most sacred mission.

I choose...Lord Tsekani and Prince Bakari. Let us go and find Aunt Teo and all the cake she keeps hidden for special occasions! Last one there has to sweep the porch!” Kontar said.

Young boys moved like lightning when cake was at stake.
