Appearance

Play By: Claudia Lynx
Distinguishing Features:
Ziba has intense eyes, a dark mahogany that can seem black when she is angered and a beautiful deep brown so entrancing that many a bed partner has 'fallen into' her gaze.  She is also short, a mere five feet.

Personality

Personality:
Ziba al-Hague is a deeply spiritual person, a woman of faith and belief, and approaches all things with a reverence for the blessings her Goddess has given her.  That reverence has led her to be a protective and caring person, willing to do all that she must in order to ensure that those around her survive and thrive in a land which is designed to test their worthiness.  If the land itself is designed to test their worthiness, then surely the flaws inherent in each person are also tests of worthiness.

Those flaws are most often of personality, but Ziba also believes flaws can be of a physical nature.  Whether that test maybe of attractiveness, or of physical infirmity, she believes that all people were born with a purpose - and that to turn them away for their imperfections is to dishonor the tests and gifts the Mother has gifted her People.  This belief developed over time in her youth as she saw those injured in the Desert be forced to die - and she found that it just never felt right to do that.

Those challenges she faces can sometimes bring her to Question, but she will often use those very Questions to seek out answers from within the Darkness and come away with answers and emotions which give her strength and purpose.  This isn't to say that Ziba doesn't have her flaws.  She is proud of her faith, proud of her strength, and some would say she is sometimes too proud - though those brave enough to speak such words might not be brave enough to speak them within hearing of Ziba herself.

She is also vain, willing to spend whatever time is necessary to ensure she looks 'appropriate' as an Aubdina and a Priestess.  Appearing shabby, after all, is likely to not have those she serves take her seriously.

Ziba knows these flaws can be brutal to the spiritual, and so she wrestles with them often - trying to temper them with patience and caring, a willingness to work even if the work is filthy, and attempts to be honest most especially with herself.  No person can be perfect (not even her, to her chagrin) and so Ziba knows that these struggles will be life long battles.

Those battles are worth it for the smiles of the people of Pruul, her Clan, her Tribe and Family, and her Children.  Her mother, the Queen of the Hague, had ensured that Ziba knew her purpose was to Serve - but she also ensured that Ziba knew to care for herself in order to Serve effectively.  To that end, Ziba will always Serve her family first.

Her children and her lovers are the most important people in the world - and to honor them and ensure they live as they should, she will stop at nothing.  Those that threaten her family are her enemies, and Ziba's usual caring and kind nature will fade beneath the Rage of a Darkly Blessed creature when the gifts the Mother has granted her are threatened.

Now that hte Worms have claimed her mother, and so many of the Hague, Ziba will do what she must to ensure the survival of her Tribe and to fix the faults she finds in Onn.  No matter what it takes.

Likes:
  • 1.  Serving: Ziba has felt the call to serve all her life.  Not a Queen, necessarily, (though she is not averse to this) so much as to serve the people.  There is joy to be found in service that only a Priestess can provide to the people of Pruul, and more joy to be found in being an Aubdina that can be the difference between life and death to a caravan.
  • 2.  Communion: There is nothing more sacred that the connection to the Darkness, and there in the Abyss Ziba feels the presence of Mother Night and the peace that only She can bring.  Whenever Ziba feels troubled or overwhelmed, she often turns to Communion to ask for the Mother to help find her way.
  • 3.  Intimacy:  There is something about the touch of another person - something about feeling the breath and flesh of another being against her own that brings a sense of wonder to Ziba's soul and peace to her heart.  When communion and prayer cannot settle her, it is the intimacy of her family that settles her better than anything else can.

    Dislikes:
  • 1.  Ambitious People: It is healthy to have some ambition.  Ambition can be a fantastic motivator.  But there is such a thing as 'too much' ambition, despite what many amongst the Sabbah seem to believe, and whenever Ziba runs into these people she often feels as if she will crack her teeth with how often they grind together.  This distaste grew out of things she witnessed in Dar el Salaam, and frankly she tends to react poorly when confronted with certain behaviors face to face.
  • 2.  Xenophobia - Pruul is a land of immigration.  The Hague are a tribe who will take anyone strong enough, wise enough, and cunning enough to pass their Trials.  The surge in hatred for foreign blood and outside influence that has infected her Clan has been making Ziba seethe for some time now.
  • 3.  Forgetting HIstory - It has been nearly two hundred years since Witch unleashed the Purge on the Realms.  According to the lessons and stories, the reason for the Purge was not just to end a war but to try to strike a blow against the corruption that had enabled the war in the first place.  Sadly, Landen and Blood alike seem to have short memories as that same corruption is alive and well in the world today - and Ziba is more than willing to confront it as a Voice of the Darkness.

    Fears:
  • 1.  There is No Hereafter - Being a Priestess, a Spiritual Beacon, Ziba knows that Mother Night and the Darkness are there for all souls in existence.  She truly believes this, and imparts this belief in others.  But sometimes, when life grows particularly cruel, there is a thought that tickles the back of her mind and keeps her awake.  What if there is nothing once we die?
  • 2.  Becoming What She Fights - Ziba worries that in fighting the monster feeding at the Sabbah's heart, she may become something very similar to that monster.  Surely the True Sabbah did not start out as murderers, rapists, and dishonorable bastards.  What if in facing the evil the True Sabbah carry, they make of her something worse?  She has seen how good people can be swayed by fear and anger - and if those good people could fall to such forces then how will she stand against the evils in Pruul and not fall to their influence?
  • 3.  Corruption - Times of Testing and Hardship have but three possible results.  People may leap towards greatness and honor, they may continue on as they have, or they may fall into decay and evil.  With the upheaval in Pruul, and the vicious sandworm attacks, Ziba fears that Pruul may slide into behavior it will never recover from - forever being tainted by hatred and fear.

    Craft Strengths:
  • 1.  Connecting With the Darkness - Ziba has always shown a particular talent for being able to sink into the Abyss, but with training, this talent became particularly focused on affecting the Jewels of others.  With this, she has been able to keep those who drive themselves too far from Breaking, and has assisted many Pregnant Blood with the Draining of the Jewels during such a dangerous time.  She has also been known to help children learn to control their flows of power during their Craft training.
  • 2.  Water Summoning - All Aubdina can summon water, but Ziba has learned to summon it not only from the air, but from the aquafers she can sense deep below Pruul's surface.  It takes longer if the water is beneath the sand, but it can be done.

    Craft Weaknesses:
  • 1.  Communication Craft - Ziba cannot initiate threads once someone is out of sight, though she can respond to them no matter the distance.  Because of this, Pavad often seems a little paranoid about letting her get around a corner without him right on her heels.
  • 2.  Defensive Shielding - Most Pruulians receive combat training of some sort - and Ziba had to get many remedial lessons when it came to defense.  She could never seem to keep shields up for more than a few breaths, and so her mother out of sheer desperation began teaching her to reflexively use combat shields.  It means she has to know the blows are coming, but it is better than nothing.

    History:

Eszter al-Hague was the Queen of her tribe, and she was a good one.  She'd born a Daughter and had served her people well for nearly a decade when the Night seemed to decide that she had one last Blessing to offer her people.  At the age of forty, Eszter al-Hague bore another Daughter.  And this Daughter, from the nearly the moment she'd opened her eyes, bore the scent of Priestess.

She nearly died doing so - but as Ziba grew up, she was often told of how she had been the "Blessed Surprise" of her parents' lives.  She was often in lessons, learning of the various rites and traditions that all Priestesses must learn, but she was also taught by her Mother how to see the world around her as the Blessing it was.

Those lessons taught her to see the world in a way that most Priestesses could not, and over time, those times in the sand and amongst small boxes and pots of plants taught her to sense things that others seemed to have difficult sensing.  She could not sense the land as her mother could - she was no Queen.  But she was always, inevitably, drawn to Water where others might think it did not exist.

She became the 'luck charm' of the caravans that her Mother's presence would attract, and she often spent time trying to teach her nephews.  Of her three nephews, however, only one seemed interested.  Mehdi was the kindest, sweetest soul she had ever met.  When every other child, including herself, was intent on getting what they wanted and without care for others, Mehdi was intent on trying to make plants grow and on making others happy.  "Mehdi.. like me, you are called to Serve.  You are just called to Serve in a different way."  That was what she would tell him.  And it was what she believed.

Mehdi became her example of how people should be.  He accepted life, in all its complexities and truths, and he simply continued to be himself.  It did not take a genius to see that Mehdi confused his father and brothers, and so Ziba took to reminding him that he was perfectly fine just as he was.  The Mother had made him that way, and if she'd meant him to be a sword-swinger he would be one.  If she meant him to learn to feed his people and bring them joy, then that was what he was meant to be.  She continued to teach him these little tidbits of wisdom until she felt called to her Offering.

She was twenty when the urge struck so strongly that she thought she might fly from the very ground seeking an altar.  It took little convincing for her Mentor to believe her, and when she came away with the Red, her mother was overcome with pride.  And then terror.  For Ziba knew that she was not meant to be just a Priestess.  She was meant to be an Aubdina.

She received her parents' blessings, kissed her sister and her nephews goodbye, and then was escorted to Dar el Salaam.  The Rite was harder than she had imagined it would be.  She burned and writhed in fevered dreams and strange visions the first day.  But she survived.

She relied on the Darkness to protect her when her body crawled to the brightest pool of light she could find, nearly blind to the need for water and relief as her skin drank in every ray and struggled to devour her life to sate the poison in her blood.

When the third day came, she was exhausted and in pain and so thirsty that as the water came to her from the air she felt at first relief, and then dismay.  She could not stop the water.  There was so mcuh, so very much, that she feared she would drown.  It took effort, concentration, and faith in the Darkness to find a way to at least redirect it out and away from her.  As the water flushed through her, she felt cool relief for the first time in days.. and then pushed it awya from her to circle about her as she sat upright and focused on that pulse of the Goddess in the Darkness just behind her flesh.

She succeeded where so many failed.

Then began four years of Aubdina training.  Many amongst the Aubdina simply desired hte prestige that their position would grant them - and there were a few who wanted more.  In those four years, Ziba developed a distaste that bordered on hatred for such ambitious creatures.  As her training drew to a close, she knew that she could have chosen to remain and seek the power that would someday see her rise as Head Aubdina.  It wouldn't be hard.

For a moment, a few heartbeats, she was tempted.

And then she chose not to do so.  She had felt the call to serve the People, not to rule them.  And too many Aubdina, she decided, did not seem to know the difference.  So she sought instead a male that could be a good match as a Blood Bound, and when Pavad approached her, she felt the flicker of an attraction that was more than just lust.

She accepted him, tied herself to him, and left the Peaceful Place for the Northern Ranges.  There, she found flowers and seeds to send to Mehdi.  There, she found that she could fall in love with her Bound Escort and help him raise his daughter.  The Northern Ranges is where she birthed her son, and it was the birthplace ofa  new life and new purpose.  There, she met Mirza and Shahina, and brought them into the family she had made with Pavad al-Hague.

While she missed Mehdi, she found she loved the routes of the Northern Ranges.  She loved the stars against the mountains, the flowers that dotted the hills, and the people.  She loved mentoring Shareen, and she loved being able to make her own decisions and help give advice where necessary.

Those years in the Northern Ranges gave her peace.  Then came the news of the Sandworm attacks.  Then came the news of the disaster that had been the High Festival.  Rumors of the hatred that was festering within her Clan's breast disturbed her, and so Ziba spoke with her family and convinced them to go with her back to Onn.  There they could discover the truth, and determine for themselves whether their Clan and Tribes were going astray.

There, the peace they had thought they held could be shattered by the reality of Shira and Zhaleh al-Sabbah's machinations.

    Character in Play:
Arriving at 'the' waiting camp for passage into Onn was a little odd.  Not that she came back to Onn often, but Ziba had a hard time believing that even after all these weeks, the Worms were still such a problem.  Still, it wasn't hard to spot the worm sign in the distance.  The reason for this camp being necessary was obvious.

What did truly surprise her, however, was feeling the tremble of a familiar presence at the Red.  Her eyes sought over the small group of people ahead, and when she spotted that oh-so-familiar set of wings she let out a delighted laugh and squeezed Pavad's hand.  "Jasper!"  Her left hand went up, waving a bit to catch his attention.

The Desert had many blessings.  Jasper al-Situla was one of them.  With his beautiful eyes and his warm heart, many an Aubdina in training had fallen hard for the Winged Male.  Even Ziba had to admit that she'd had an 'eye' on him at times.

Excited, she tugged Pavad forward and smiled as she heard his grumbling.  "Oh Pavad..."
"Young prideful boys are hardly as good as Mirza and I love."
"Of course not.  But Jasper is hardly a 'young and proud boy'."  Oh the teasing.  She laughed, leaning in to a lay a kiss on Pavad's cheek before winking at Jasper.  "Hello handsome!  It's been too long!"

She extended her hands towards Jasper as Pavad chuckled, her smile so wide that it almost felt as if it could split her cheeks.  There was always something pleasant about Jasper.  Maybe it was the way that he seemed to love all of the Aub, or maybe it was just the way he seemed to care about everyone.  She couldn't put her finger on it.

"I didn't realize you were one of those on duty today.  The Night blesses us."
"Lady Ziba.  It warms my heart to know that you and your family are safe."

Ah.  Yes.  The Hague had been greatly harmed at the festival.  So had the Latifh.  Ziba's smile fell, her eyes dropping to the ground as she took a deep breath.

"Grandmother passed during the attack, Jasper.  Many of the Hague are gone.  And the rumors... bode ill.  I've come to see for myself.  All of us will need to get into the city."

"Conditions there are not.."  Jasper seemed to try to find the words, and Ziba squeezed his hands.

"That... that is why I am here.  It is the duty of a Priestess to tend the spiritual needs of her people, and the duty of an Aubdina to ensure that the people's water needs are met."  She set her jaw in that old familiar stubborn pattern, and lifted her chin.

"We will not take no for an answer."

Looks great!
Home is behind, the world ahead, And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night, Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead, We'll wander back to home and bed.
