Personality

Personality:
Growing up in Onn made Zareen who she is. She may not be one of the tribes, always wandering the desert, and she may not know her father, whom her mother chased out before Zareen was old enough to remember, but don’t let that fool you into thinking Zareen isn’t tough. The desert has its dangers -- and so does the city.

At the core of Zareen is someone who wants to make a difference, who wants to see the people she cares about happy. She has a soft spot for the orphans of Onn. But the exterior, the layers that cover her like an onion? That’s a different story. Zareen is usually sassy or sarcastic, often scathing. Mess up around her and she’ll give you an earful. She’s naturally distrustful of everyone and it takes her a long time to give even a moderate amount of trust to someone. She’ll say she trusts her two best friends but does she really? Hard to tell. Keeping people at a distance comes naturally to her because she feels she can get the best of both worlds that way -- she gets a good character reading on them without getting too bogged down by details and gets in, gets out, gets paid without many questions about her own background.

Not that she minds. She’s the eldest daughter of Jerusha Rasim, who owns several stores and restaurants. Her mother is a stable name in Onn and she doesn’t care what her children do so long as they stay on the right side of the law. Which, Zareen does. Usually.

Zareen’s wary nature means that she’s always looking around, even when she’s in places where she feels comfortable. She’s not looking for an attack -- she’s observing. Everything. Zareen has a memory that stretches back and back and back. She can tell you what you were wearing last week or a verbatim conversation from years ago. It’s just a natural skill she has and it comes in useful in her lines of work, which is everything from reciting conversations, tailing someone in a crowd, or seeing the interpersonal connections between people.

Besides people always seeming to annoy her somehow, Zareen does enjoy a balanced amount of things, usually with select people that don’t annoy her like her siblings or her best friends. Riding horses, eating good food, playing games in the street, etc. -- Zareen likes doing things, not sitting back and letting life pass her by. And in Onn, there’s plenty to do.

Likes:
  • 1 - Weapons. Crossbows and khanjars. Javelins and daggers. Zareen’s favorite places in the city are places that either make or sell weapons. She knows the history of the great ones, the rudimentary processes of weaponsmithing, the differences between weapons of each era, etc.
  • 2 - Aromatics. Oils, scents, spices. Zareen likes things she can smell versus things she can touch. Some of these scents are attached to bright memories but most are just the novelty, the tickling, the sliding down the back of her throat feel that comes with scents.
  • 3 - Intelligent conversations. Zareen dislikes small talk but get her into an intelligent conversation with someone -- or let her just listen to one -- and she’ll sit for hours. She enjoys such things of the mind: comparative history, philosophy, sociology, politics, etc.
Dislikes:
  • 1 - Tribesmen. They have their own weird honor and rituals. They tend to be ignorant of Onn’s nuances and streets. They’re ignorant and arrogant, thinking that they know more than city-dwellers, yet getting lost in alleys because they can’t navigate a city. When Zareen has to act as a guide for them, she hates it.
  • 2 - Drama. She loathes it. She hates listening to people bitch about their boyfriends, or their coworkers, or whatever other angst they’ve got in their lives. She thinks people who do so are self-absorbed and will gladly let them know what she thinks.
  • 3 - Affection. As someone naturally untrusting of nearly everyone, that breach of personal space and touch of skin on skin really irks Zareen. She’s not a germophobe, she just finds that proximity and emotional vulnerability really odd and if someone tries to hug her or touch her, she’ll shy back. Space -- give it to her.
Fears:
  • 1 - Onn never going back to normal. Zareen hates the overly crowded streets, the tribal in-fighting that keeps destroying property, the sandworms besieging the city, the stretch on resources. Onn is caught in some transition and Zareen fears it’ll never go back to the city she once knew. What will she do then?
  • 2 - Black Widows. It takes a certain sort of crazy to dance with the Twisted Kingdom and like poisons. It’s that chaos embodied that Zareen fears. Why would anyone want to get close to any of that?
  • 3 - Sandworms. It used to be that the sandworms were some boogey-creature out in the deep desert. Something scary that didn’t affect her. Now, they’re like...right outside the gates. And even if they leave, they’re still out there, waiting to eat things.
Craft Strengths:
  • 1 - Sight Shields. Zareen already has a knack for keeping out of sight using crowds and corners but her Sight Shielding is where her strength is. She can waver her Shields to look like heat rising on the road or mold them to shadows so that she escapes notice entirely. Nothing to see here, move along.
  • 2 - Imitation Craft. Zareen is good at mimicking the details of someone’s clothes or hairstyle. Disguises in general. If she’s spent enough time around someone, she can even get their voice down pretty well. Her imitation stands up to more than a cursory inspection.
Craft Weaknesses:
  • 1 - Psychic sensing. Whether it be because of a mental prejudice or an actual weakness, Zareen struggles with gauging another person’s Caste and rank. She hides this by scornfully stating that “Blood is Blood and what does it fucking matter?”
  • 2 - Jewel Management. Zareen’s own hubris causes this weakness. She is reckless when it comes to using her power. Better use it all in one strike, finish it quick, overkill, that sort of thing -- that’s her mentality. She’s come dangerously close to shattering her Jewels before in the past.
Life Story

Family:
Mother: Jerusha Rasim, Purple Dusk to Opal witch (age 56, born 138 AP)
Father: unknown
Siblings: half-sister Esteri Rasim, White to Tiger Eye witch (age 29, born 165 AP)
half-brother Kadeen Rasim, Tiger Eye to Purple Dusk Warlord (age 26, born 168 AP)
half-brother Esad Rasim, White to Yellow Prince (age 22, born 172 AP)
half-sister Selah Rasim, Rose to Purple Dusk witch (age 20, born 174 AP)

History:

Jerusha Rasim is an entrepreneur.

She has a growing network of businesses within Onn that started small -- just a restaurant -- and now takes over a city block. Two restaurants, three stores, one housing complex, five office spaces...and growing. But it started with just that restaurant and Zareen remembers it best. Her mother shouting out orders to cooks and servers. Zareen peeking out at customers from the small, paper-strewn office. The thick scents of cooking food and smoke. And, after the dinner service was over, spending hours in the restaurant cleaning, singing, and laughing.

From her mother, Zareen learned shrewdness. To cut through the bullshit. And to never let anyone keep her down.

But she also learned hard work and how to turn bad situations into better ones. Jerusha rarely complained about the cards dealt her and Zareen picked up on looking for silver linings that she could turn into sunny days whenever the storms of life hit. But while her mother was suited to deal with people, Zareen preferred not to, often hiding away after too much interaction, overwhelmed.

Her mother made certain that her children all received at least some rudimentary education. After Zareen’s Birthright, her classes became a full day’s load for a few years, until she was in her teens and began working with her mother more, learning how to run the various businesses that Jerusha had acquired. But business management did not come easily to Zareen. She didn’t like being stuck indoors or constantly reviewing paperwork. But all of those business connections did offer Zareen an opportunity -- she had a network of people in Onn to offer other services to, like being a courier or guide.

Through this and her mother’s reputation, Zareen established her own niche in Onn, both a common sight to see at one of her mother’s businesses and frequently spotted throughout Onn on various assignments.

Zareen’s Virgin Night is something she now wrinkles her nose at (not the best of bed partners, but hey, he did his job) but at the time it was required in order for her to reach her Rose Offering. Zareen was glad that she had Jewels on the lighter end of the spectrum because being out of the spotlight was her preferred state. She felt that having Dark Jewels like her mother’s Opal would have forced her into a life she didn’t want -- carrying on her mother’s businesses.

With her two best friends, Surah and Kitab, Zareen continued her simple, happy life of scrapping up coin from odd jobs. She even scored a decent sized apartment with her hard work and not via handout. That was until the sandworms attacked and Onn became the largest center of refuge. Suddenly, Zareen found her city permanently packed. To compound the issue, the tribes began reshaping the city, both with their terraforming and fighting. Though displeased with these new developments, Zareen held her tongue until the day the city sickened and the Sabbah Queen was deposed.

Not like she had any loyalties or love for the Sabbah. Zareen was just tired of seeing warmongering tribesmen ruin her city. She found others who, for their own reasons, wanted to see the Sabbah Queen restored, and joined their cause, making it clear that she was here only to get Onn back to its former glory.

Character in Play:

From her vantage point above the crowd, Zareen could see them coming.

Witchlight hung over their heads. Their voices were angry or wailing. Away from the mobs, anguished screams and retching could be heard. The cacophony rolled through the streets -- a tidal wave of pain and fury heading for the Sabbah quarter.

What the Hell were they up to now?

Zareen slit her eyes, trying to pick out the leaders or familiar faces. One or two from the city, probably there because their loved ones were sick, were in that crowd but mostly tribesmen could be seen. They marched in almost orderly fashion right now but Zareen knew that would change when they crashed against the Sabbah gates.

She took the stairs down from the ledge and hurried toward the nearest of her mother’s businesses. “Lock the doors,” she said harshly to the servant watching from the threshold. “We’re not getting involved in that.” She went to the back of the business, towards the office, to see if her mother was there. She wasn’t. **Mom, something’s up. Looks like the Sabbah are--**

**I’m aware, dear. See to your siblings.** The tone Jerusha used was commanding but not rude. Years had taught Zareen that her mother was applying all of her energy into the situation. Zareen would do the same.

Quick communication threads located each of her siblings -- Esteri, Selah, Kadeen, and Esad -- and brief conversations afterward made sure that they all stayed somewhere safe. Two more inquiries found her best friends -- Surah and Kitab. Kitab was on his way to her right then and slipped into the business through one of the back doors. The only concern that Zareen showed was a quick squeeze of Kitab’s arm once he had arrived. “It’s getting nasty out there,” he said.

If it hadn’t been for the dire situation, Zareen might have rolled her eyes and chided him for stating the obvious. Her tone wasn’t dulled though as she said, “Yeah.”

“I wonder what they’re up to now,” Kitab replied as the two of them drifted close to a window to watch safely.

“Who cares? I wonder when they’re just going to leave,” Zareen muttered darkly. Ever since the sandworms had attacked and besieged Onn, the city had been over its capacity and it showed. The people were too crowded, resources too strained. Zareen couldn’t go a few feet nowadays without running into someone and she hated running into people. “At what point do we get to just kick them out?” she wondered aloud.

Kitab looked at her. “We can’t do that, Zareen. Not...not with the worms waiting.”

“So? Their problem, not mine. They took their chances with the desert before. Why not now? Or are we just going to sit here and let them raze the city because some bitch can’t stand sharing the room with someone else?”

Kitab looked back out the window and didn’t reply. Zareen crossed her arms over her chest and stared outside as well.

Someone in this city had to agree with her. She just had to find them.
