Appearance

Play By: Denise Vasi
Distinguishing Features: Delicate. Zaehrah stands to all of five foot and one inch, and at first glance one might assume her diminutive measurements are in some fashion indicative of personality. At least, until the unmistakable psychic scent of queen is apparent. Though her hair is naturally curly, Zae prefers to brush and comb the heavy midnight locks until they both shimmer and are closer to an elegant, soft wave.

Her blue eyes with their golden specs mark her as half long-lived, though she has seen little enough life that said upper length of her life has yet to precisely make its mark upon her. A happy woman despite the difficulties of life in Pruul especially without rain, Zae is swift to smile, and even more so to welcome those she calls near-kin or clan. Well favoured of soft silks and as much well woven linen as she can manage, weaving, books, and cradleboard interest her most, while long chess matches are second to these. She is seldom seen without the pair of jeweled "open handed" pieces of golden ornamentation around her small wrists signifying her place among the Bali.

With a preference for soft blues and delicate greens, the woman's very curious appearance marks her as one piece of Pruulian history, in which those fleeing great difficulty elsewhere may find themselves a safe haven in the sands, so long as they follow the rites and traditions.

Personality

Personality: Caution and a slowness of consideration are what holds Zae steady even at her rather young age for a half blooded long lived Hayllian that has known very little of the place that her father was born, raised, and eventually returned to. Thus, while she is loyal to bones to Pruul, having been born among its sandy landscape she has always been curious about the world beyond it, despite the likelihood that she will ever see anything save sand.

Ever has she considered the long lines and the history of Pruul herself, dedicating herself to the pursuits of knowledge not only of her Caste, but of the richness of the world and its passions. She remains among the divide of the long and short lived; containing that swift, star like spark that is all too quickly extinguished and the coiled tension of the Hayllian mind.

Her tutelage by the Voice of Clan Bali, was of course a foregone conclusion at the moment of her birth; never has she acted in terms of clan political shifts without seeking his advice. This aspect is well present in terms of Lady Zae's personality and registers in an immense presence of patience in the woman, as well as a nearly even handed justice, were it not for her slight preference in Pruulian concerns to lie with that of her Clan.

Despite the revolutionary measures present in their very uncertain society, and her sympathy for the existence of such movements, Lady Zae is well aware due her understanding of patterns alone that such "causes" are typically doomed to failure without a guiding hand in steering. As Queen of the Bali, she does her very best in devoting her life and all that it means to her people, despite her origins elsewhere. While aware in some manner as a Queen of her lack of freedom, rather than despairing in it, Zaehrah has always been one to bring light and life wherever she goes, following in the footsteps of those that have arisen to rank before her with grace and as wise a footing as she can manage.

Likes:
  • 1 Silk Ribbons: As a child bereft of parents, silk ribbons were always one way to ease the young ones' solitude and solemn bearing. As an adult woman now past her first century of life, she finds joy in weaving ribbons for the children of the clan and tribes that hold allegiance to the Bali.
  • 2 Dance: Where others lose their hearts to violence and poor temper, Zaehrah eases her slower burning, yet occasional wrath with dance. It has often kept her from making too swift a judgement or a decision that may have cost more than it was worth, such as allying with the once occasionally useful Order of Tohm, now turned foolish and radical.
  • 3 Prayer and Ritual: Seeing immense value in the weight and graciousness of the rituals that bring the Blood closer to Mother Night, Zae has a deep respect for Priestesses and the rare Priest. In another life, she would have wished to have been born as one, but the Darkness decreed elsewise.

    Dislikes:
  • 1 Insecurity of Youth: The Mineborn. The popular little group of children trying to rule is on everyone's tongue these days, from the crazed members of the Order of Tohm to the least of those of the Bali, and even the Aubdina. Some hate or love them. Zaehrah finds the group, power or not, laughable in the idea that inexperienced youngsters could rule an entire territory. It is the most foolish thing she has ever heard. Rumours state the children are trying to bring the rains, yet calling forth rain does not equal the ability to dispense fair and evenhanded law and justice, nor being trained for decades to rule. As they were born in the foulness of salt mines, while she pities them, Zaehrah strongly disapproves of their rule. 'Only an idiot would hand riches to an egg and expect it to speak,' says she. The Lady, were she so blessed to take on the learning of the Priestly Caste and chosen by the people (this is most important, for no one chose the Mineborn, they took), even feels herself too young to rule a territory without wiser hands to guide.
  • 2 Idle Hands: To be idle does not suit the culture of Pruul, Zaehrah feels. Even Queens must bend their minds and hands toward some trade or practical learning in times they are not running a court. It is a harsh statement, perhaps, and as a Queen Zaehrah is very aware of that, yet she holds herself to the same exacting standard she would hold all else.
  • 3 Soiled Books: Books. The records of knowledge. Without them to guide, memory can falter and shift over the decades and centuries. Thus books that are not well kept and respected annoy Lady Zae to no end. Dogeared pages especially frustrate the young woman. Books that are becoming too worn to properly use are diligently recopied, sans errors, and the old version destroyed.

    Fears:
  • 1 Famine: As the great drought has passed on and on, the Lady Zaehrah's greatest concern is that of famine, and what typically follows it, disease. While the Blood have Healers that may snuff out many of the most foul pains and wounds, the Landen do not. While many Blood hold disdain for them, Zaehrah feels a true responsibility toward the Landen and Jewelless Blood of Clan Bali. As a result, she has enforced the restrictions on the wasting of water very strictly. The smallest of children, and women with child come before all, followed by Healers, and warriors. The illnesses that took her parents ring through her choices, and which occasionally are steps from an obsession.
  • 2 Desperation: In desperate times filled with confusion, the people need even further a firm hand and guide than usual. While some might immediately consider the Bali Hidebound, it is the reckless desperation of others like the Mineborn and the various radical orders and Zae's fear of them stirring parts of the population that ordinarily, might keep their fruitless complaints to themselves. After all, it was those elements that lead to the heartless murder of her brothers.
  • 3 Civil Warfare: Revolution, cried all those that felt they had less, until the first of the bodies of their own families rolled in for the removal and purification of the water from them and their personal stores. In Zaehrah's clever, well ordered mind, there are far more intelligent ways to rule than mere revenge and ridding oneself of enemies through harsh methods. A war across all Pruul keeps the young woman up late at night, wondering at the safety of all those that did not ask for it.

    Craft Strengths:
  • 1 Emotional Healing: Zaehrah's grasp of emotional healing is subtle rather than a sharpened scalpel. With time, she is capable of wearing away at damaging paths in emotional tendencies, as well as sense intention based on the hints of emotion in the air around others. This skill is more pronounced the more time she spends around someone.
  • 2 Item Enhancement: In addition to keeping her body cool in the heat of Pruul by weaving subtle spells into her attire, she can as well regulate warmth as needed, especially on small objects such as rings and scarves that do not register as direct Craft use. It is a very essential tool when out in the deep desert, where the use of Craft attracts deadly sandworms.

    Craft Weaknesses:
  • 1 Shield Craft: Her shields have a tendency to falter in moments from creation. As a result, Zaehrah ties protective spells to clothing and jewellery. Though not nearly as useful and accurate as proper shields could be if she could learn them, it is a minor replace that is reasonably adequate, at best that might allow the Queen time to escape a destructive situation, or call for aid.
  • 2 Death Spells: Though perhaps very useful in defending ones' self from deadly combat, or meting out the most final of justice in a court, Zaehrah has never been able to master them. At best she is capable of delivering a craft strike to render an opponent or enemy unconscious, due to an inability to channel her jewel strength in just the proper, most efficient method.

    History:
Zaehrah was born to a doting father, whom while loved her mother, was never one for the clan life, and instead maintained the relatively prosperous lifestyle of a caravan leader in Onn. While he was born in turn to Challiotian traders, he firmly took on the culture of the home he was born in, rather than the one his family left behind. In turn, Zaehrah's mother had been adopted into Clan Bali for her usefulness; a long lived, dark jewelled Priestess willing to remain and learn certainly being of excellent purpose.

Though not the only child born to the pair, Lady Zae was certainly their most indulged while also held to the strictest standards due to being first their youngest, and secondly born a Queen. As with every child, regardless of her father's presence, Zaehrah was delivered of her mother safely by Abulurd ibn Bali. After her parents deaths due to both ingesting poorly prepared food items at the Spring Festival in Onn following her fifteenth birthday, her manners took a considerable shift toward the grave. As a result one of the Priestesses and the then ruling Queen of the Bali took over her care with tutelage handled almost entirely by visits from the Voice of the Clan, or a hand selected tutor.

The early loss of her parents turned Zaehrah into a studious, graceful young woman, while the deaths of her three brothers only honed her understanding of how precisely the desert gave life, and could as well in swift change take it away. Lady Zae's Virgin Night was handled by a somewhat elder Warlord that was like her, half long lived. Lord Fatin was a diligent, skilled lover and managed the event without a ripple of difficulty, and the pair remained lovers off and on until his death. Zaehrah's Offering and descent to the Opal drew the attention of another, a Warlord Prince. Though Jalal was lighter jewelled, he eventually gave her two children, a Warlord, and a Prince.

Though neither man still lives, their presence in her life helped teach her of the value of relationships, whether bonded or otherwise, and particularly for men that do not bond to a Queen, yet simply enjoy her presence and service. In her century and a third, she has had the fortune of having two remaining bonded only; Master of the Guard, and Steward respectively. At the present, Lady Zaehrah does not possess a First Escort due the end of the previous ones' contract with her court.

A doting, yet serious mother, both Lady Zae's sons adore and respect their mother. However, the young gentlemen have long moved on to live their own lives and had before Zaehrah became Queen of the Bali clan nearly a decade previous. While an unexpected event, it was one nonetheless that she has been grateful and very determined to succeed and give honour to every moment. Despite being Queen, she still and has always leaned heavily toward seeking Lord Abulurd's advice in most major judgements.

    Show Us What You've Got

    Character in Play:

It was damnably hot, more so than usual; Zaehrah wanted nothing more than to get through the remains of the present judgements so that she could rest. It had been five years since she had been risen to Queen of the Bali, and this was one of the few moments that the Voice of the Clan had not been in attendance, having been called away on more pressing business than mere disputes. As a result, the Court had been convened in Onn rather than the deep desert as might have been expected. It meant a small rerouteing of business for the Clan, but nothing immensely difficult, given the benefit of trade while present in the city.

So, as it normally would have been, these were left to her to make a call upon, seeing that the individuals had been unable to arrive at a resolution themselves. In her reclining chair under considerable shade, several continuous spells that never would have been available in the deep desert but were here helped to cut the heat in the room, marginally improving the comfort. Most judgements were simple matters of trade, and minor disputes settled with coin or contracts of service.

Though it made her nervous being responsible for the well-being of the whole of Clan Bali and those tribes among their numbers, Lady Zaehrah thrived off of being useful. She enjoyed dispensing proper justice and being as fair as one possibly could to those that relied upon her slow growing wisdom. Craft painted nails in a soft summer sky blue tapped upon the edge of the chair as her last order of business prior to a meeting with her Steward presented themselves before the assembled court.

The Queen gestured a hand. "Please, speak freely of your difficulty."

A tall, lithe young woman stepped forward, holding the hand of a young boy that appeared to be approximately five years of age. Though masculine, he appeared the image of the lady that escorted him, and by psychic scent and demeanour, Lady Zae knew she was looking at a Warlord Prince and his mother, by the tension in the pair and the familiar manner between the two. Brushing soft brown hair back from a sharp boned face, the woman, bowed, fixing her soft brown eyes on the Steward, Prince Bassam, whom stood on Queen Zaehrah's right. An elegant Tiger Eye Jewelled ring shimmered on the man's right hand. After a moment she looked back at the Queen, whom smiled; the expression lit her soft blue, gold specked eyes.

"I am Lady Tilhan, thank you for listening to my petition. A former lover has demanded my son to live with him, and I have no family to block the wish despite the fact that I have not named the man as possessing Paternal rights." She gestured to the irritated, yet calm Prince behind her, attired in greater opulence than the Hearth Witch telling her tale. As the Prince parted his lips to speak, Zaehrah held up a hand to silence him.

She did not prefer a petitioner being interrupted at court, especially when it was as well Clan business. Crossing one leg over the other, Zaehrah tilted back her head thoughtfully, and quietly communicated to her Steward as a result of the interruption.

*He I believe, has a stake in this judgement. Send one of the second circle now to verify his identity, as well as this woman's story. He is Bali by blood and Pruulian besides, and she is not though still one of us., Yet there is more to this than what is immediately apparent, my lord. If the Lady Tilhan speaks true, then there will be a trail of information, as I have been so taught.*

*It will be done, Lady Zaehrah. What then if the woman is lying?*

*That is what must be discovered, yet I am uncertain of the motive of a woman lying when she has the upper hand. A child belongs to the mother, especially at this age.* Zaehrah continued to tap her fingers while peering at both the lady, and the child before turning her gaze to the Prince that had attempted an interruption. As her court was known for its fairness, that detail continued to rub at her senses. As a mother herself, she had to restrain herself to neutrality and not grant an immediate defence of the mother without hearing for both sides.

"Very well. Is the child yours? Did you birth the boy?"

The Hearth Witch nodded emphatically. "He is my son, yes, my lady."

A faint shift of the emotion in the room gave cause for her to regard each person. Her brows raised slowly. "Prince. You appear to dispute this Lady Tilhan's claim? I will permit you to address the court in equal presence as the lady has."

He stepped forward, a wave of emotion rippled around the slightly younger man. "I am Prince Aamir, thank you for listening to my challenge of the presented petition." A pause in his breath lasted some moments before the Prince began to speak. "She speaks correctly. I am indeed a former lover; we did part ways what appeared amicably. Yet the boy is not her son. He is my child, though she grew close to him over the time we were paired. I departed on business to Dhemlan and as we remained close, I requested that she tend to him for me while I was away for the pair of weeks my trade required." The gentleman tilted his chin upward.

"She refused to return the boy to me upon my return to Pruul, my Queen." Aamir's hazel gaze flickered in a brief glance toward Lady Zaehrah's Master of the Guard, Lord Faruq, whom stood focused at her back, maintaining Green shields around the Queen.

Lady Zae studied the Hearth Witch, whom stood tall and still, and surprisingly unreadable. It was a familiar sort of pride.

"You have presented your case very well, Lord Aamir." She studied the lady calmly, without apparent emotion upon her expression, then gestured to the handsome male child, deciding on a test while waiting for further intel to arrive back for proof in either direction, be it in the favour of the woman, or the male that made the Lady Zae somewhat uncertain. She did her best in considering how the Voice of the Bali might have wished her to handle the situation, while also being true to her own mind and conscience. "Release the boy to Prince Aamir."

A tremor went through the woman as she clutched the boy to her frame, before finally letting go of his hand. Not a single tear was apparent; though the child was slow to move toward the Prince, a hint of confusion upon his face. In that moment, Zaehrah turned her attention toward something behind her, deliberately looking away while her bonded males served as her eyes and ears for some moments for the purpose of simply attempting to stall for a little more time. It only made Zaehrah appreciate the patience needed for the process at all.

Three things occurred near simultaneously: Prince Aamir smirked, only to pinched the child's ear, whom flinched at the faint painful contact, Lady Tilhan shivered and her lower lip trembled. Several of the ladies in the room tensed and or shifted in disapproval, though no one dared actually interrupt.

It was Prince Bassam whom very lightly brushed his fingertips against the crest of Zaehrah's left cheek. "Will that be your Judgement, my lady?"

*For the gentleman is lying, as admittedly convinced as I was by his tale, so says three sources that have been questioned in the last several moments.*

*How do you know, my Prince? What has been discovered?*

*Not only does the boy have the same mouth as his mother, but the child is afraid of the man. There is an open and unresolved complaint against Prince Aamir. He was accused of attempting to steal the shares of water held by others before, yet the opposition either obtained no proof, or were silenced before it could be dealt with. Prince Aamir has something of a storied reputation in Onn.*

Zaehrah looked again this time at the three intently, seeking the clues that she had just been informed of, having as well noted the bare end of Prince Aamir's smirk, and three others in the crowd that stared with keen disapproval or interest. It meant the child's testimony would give needed answer, and ideally, the remainder of the truth would fall into place. She valued it considerably, truth, even in matters of the heart. While on the one hand it could have been enough to simply rule in the favour of the lady, that this man was participant in a pattern of some measure of abuse ... it could not stand.

Allowing the Lady Tilhan to have her son was not enough punishment, for he could always come again after them if she was not careful and clear in her ruling. Sensing her tension, her Master of the Guard very briefly reacted to place a hand on Zaehrah's shoulder. It gave her the additional support she needed. Being Queen held so many different layers, meaning, and needs for all those involved. At five years in, she was still just learning.

"Boy child. What is your name?"

"I am Prince Zurir, my lady." He gave the smallest, neatest bow he could manage, and watched her already with a keen eye despite his youth. "And you are not mine, but you are my Queen," he said in a very precise manner indicative of the man he would eventually become.

"Will you tell me which one of these people is your parent?"

The boy tensed and turned around to face both of them, pausing.

"She is my mother, and he was intended to become my father, but hurt my mother's heart with his greed."

Lady Zaehrah tilted her head upward toward Prince Aamir.

"For lying, and attempted kidnapping ... and water theft by way of abusing a court judgement, you are exiled from both this court and the Clan Bali. Though I cannot remove you from Pruul, due the fact that is not my right, if you are seen around us again, my judgement will be far more severe. Prince Bassam. Send word around the other clans that this man is a water thief. If they are wise, they will listen. One can only hope."

The queens eyes glittered at the sheer shock on the man's face.

    "How did you ...!?"

"Simple, my cowardly, disgusting Prince. By listening to the advisors that know me best."

The young Warlord Prince ran back to his mother's arms.

You can! A shop purchase is required, though. You can reduce this Jewel set to a lighter set if you'd prefer, or you can purchase a Roll Discard or a Bankable Roll and take another General Random.

Just a word of caution, though: you can only apply one shop item to each application. So if you buy a Roll Discard you can't then buy a Dark Descent Roll, for instance.
