Distinguishing Features: Other than a few scars, Torin’s most distinguishing feature is his gaze, which tells you in no uncertain terms that he is watching you, and that you better not lay a finger on his witch.

Personality

Personality:
Torin is stoic, quiet, stern. He does not speak much, and when he does, it is to the point and precise, but this does not mean he is unfeeling. On the contrary, he feels everything deeply, but prefers to deal with those feelings himself instead of letting them gush out all over the place. Since he was a little boy, Torin has always put the lives of others before his own. Deeply devoted to his Clan and Mother Night, everything he has done has been done for them and now for Vera.

His relationship with the Voice of the Jinan has shaped the last few years of his life and been the focus of his attention. He serves her with unwavering loyalty, always by her side, always there to protect her from her enemies, hold her when she suffers, and care for her when she needs a helping hand. His love for her grew out of respect and admiration for her perseverance, and turned into a deep and aching adoration as he stood by her side day by day, watching her take on the world despite all her hurt. Fortunately, Torin is a patient man, because the witch he loves beyond reason also drives him mad. She has her fingers on all his buttons and seems determined to press them. Cursed woman.

In battle, as in life, Torin exudes calm. He is lethal, despite his relatively light Jewels, using tactics and quick thinking to win. His hatred for his enemies is a fuel that keeps him going long after his limbs ache and tremble, and when he dies, if it can’t be old and gray by Vera’s side, he hopes it is in combat, defending those he loves. Until that day comes though, he will keep his sword honed, and enjoy knowing how many Sabbah monsters he has taken down with it.

Likes:
  • Adavera: from the moment they met she has been the center of Torin’s life. He loves her to the furthest depths of his soul.
  • Cooking: contrary to what most people outside the Jinan might think, Torin loves puttering about and concocting new dishes. He particularly enjoys cooking spicy food, and is always on the hunt for new ideas. It is sometimes what he is thinking about during those long meetings while he’s glaring at you over Vera’s shoulder.
  • Onn: the desert is fine and good, and better for horses, but Torin loves the bustle of Onn, especially during festivals. There is something fun and exciting about being in the city, and he is not as sad as he feels he should be about living there now.
Dislikes:
  • The Sabbah: This used to be a genuine hatred, which has tempered to a resigned dislike as his witch seems determined to be friends with their Queen and spend time around them for her daughter’s sake. Still, he often fantasizes about a day where he gets to kill just one or two or twelve more of them.
  • Mares in Season: even the nicest of them becomes bitchy, and they bite. Others can deal with them; Torin has other temperamental ladies to take care of. As a rule, he rides geldings.
  • Overly independent witches: slow the fuck down! Get an escort! It’s a male’s job to protect, and Torin gets unreasonably irritated when the witches under his care don’t let him, and has been since he was a boy. Vera just makes it worse.
Fears:
  • Vera’s demons: Torin is afraid that the trauma Vera has undergone will keep them from ever having a chance at being more than Voice and escort. He wants to be in her bed, not just by her side. Hellsfire, he wants a wedding ring on her finger so no one else can touch her, but so far this has been impossible.
  • Something happening to his siblings: They are out of his sphere of protection, and often not even in the Territory. He worries about them, and every time one of their letters is late is filled with the deep desire to drag them back to Pruul kicking and screaming, if need be.
  • Secrets: He worries that another Spider is hiding in the shadows, that someone that he thinks of as a friend will turn out to be another Tribe Geiba. He has seen how things can appear fine on the surface but be rotten from within, and this fills him with disquieting fear.
Craft Strengths:
  • Calming Rage: Torin is a lethal man, but he is rarely overcome with fury. He takes on his battles, both physical and emotional, with a calm, centered focus that he is able to pass on to those around him. He has
  • Tracking: Once Torin is tracking you, you will not fare well. He is exceptionally good at following difficult trails, even through the hustle and bustle of a city.
Craft Weaknesses:
  • Heating and Cooling: Torin has no ability with these types of Craft, which means that on the hottest days he is crabby, sweaty and miserable, and on the coldest nights he has to bundle up to stay warm. It also means he cannot heat tea water for Vera with Craft and has to do it the Landen way, which is a constant annoyance.
  • Finishing Kills: He has a lot of trouble affecting other people's Jewels at all, and the disquieting thought that those he has killed might one day come back to get retribution fills the fairly devout Torin with dread.
Life Story

Family:
Mother: Hiba al-JinanSummer Sky - Green witch
Father: Tayeb al-Jinan Rose - Opal Warlord
Sister: Aida al-Jinan, 33, born 160Summer Sky - Opal Priestess
Brother: Alim al-Jinan, 33, born 160Summer Sky - Opal Prince

History:
Torin al-Jinan was born to the dunes of Pruul on a particularly hot midsummer day. His mother, exhausted by her ordeal, swore that she was never having a child again. Three years later, she and her husband were blessed with a set of twins.

The family of five were part of a small group of nomadic tribesmen of the Jinan, traveling mostly from Onn to Tuono with their herds. They specialized in breeding horses fit for heavy labor, not racing, and Torin enjoyed the quiet might of the beasts from when he was a boy and his father first put him astride a saddle of his own.

Growing up, Torin always watched out for his younger siblings. Alim was a careful child, taking much more after their father, much like Torin had, but Aida was a wild-child, constantly in trouble, always on the move. From the moment she got her feet under her, Torin’s parents just sighed, looked to their eldest and said: she’s your responsibility.

So Torin learned to run, and kept running after his sister until her Birthright, when both the twins stepped away with Summer Sky Jewels, outranking even the Darkest Torin could ever hope to be. Aida used her newfound strength to pester Torin, and keep him from stopping her fun. He blames this for how grumpy he became by the time he reached adulthood.

After his Offering, Torin remained by his parents side until the twins, too, had come of age, then, with kisses and hugs goodbye, they parted ways. Aida and Alim wanted to meet other people, see new places, explore and learn and grow. Torin just didn’t want them to get in too much trouble.

But trouble they did get into. Aida got it in her head that she wanted to travel outside of Pruul. Alim and Torin argued against it, but neither made any headway with their headstrong sister. So it was that on a clear winter day, Torin stood on the border between Raej and Pruul, waving to the twins as they made their way towards adventure, his heart heavy with worry for them.

Part of Torin has always wondered if he should have gone with them, but Pruul was and is his home, and he just could not bring himself to leave.

Instead, on his own for the first time since he was three, he joined up with a larger group of Jinan and began working as a guard for the Clan. Warrior training and a life full of lifting heavy feed sacks and running after small children had made him a strong and capable fighter, but it was in this part of his life that his knack for combat was identified and trained. He became lethal, despite his light Jewels, and took to the training and work with quiet enthusiasm. His calm head and steady hand in a fight won him a good reputation among his peers, and he was just starting to really enjoy his life when he got the news that his parents had been attacked by raiders. No one had survived.

The twins came home for a little bit to grieve with their brother, but soon were off again. Torin had lost his easy smile, but returned to work as well, determined to do the memory of his family proud.

About a year later, the horrors at the Central Mines were uncovered, and shortly thereafter, news spread among the Jinan, all the way to Torin’s ears, that there might be members of their Clan who had been brought to the Mines after Geiba raids. With hope and horror that one or both of his parents might have suffered that fate, Torin volunteered to go with the group sent to investigate.

What they found there was something out of nightmares. So many injured, broken, starved bodies. So much misery. Torin and his team searched through the survivors, and it didn’t take long for him to determine that his parents, perhaps blessedly, really had been killed. The Healing tent where only the most grievously injured were being tended was the last place he looked. The air was heavy and smelled of herbs and blood and rot. Healers moved from cot to cot, but one of them saw him. Keeping his voice low so as not to disturb the sick, he asked if any here were Jinan. The healer nodded and pointed towards the cot at the very end, telling him that there was one. No family had come to claim her, and she had been badly injured. They were not sure she would survive.

Torin walked over and looked down at the too-thin witch, cheeks flushed and burning with fever, and sat down beside her.

She was Jinan and had nobody. He was Jinan and hadn’t been able to be there to protect his family. He would protect her instead.

The logic may not have made sense to some, but Torin, still torn with grief and just a touch of survivor's guilt, had always needed a focus for his instinct to protect. That day, that focus shifted entirely onto Adavera al-Jinan.

He stayed by her side, refusing to budge other than to let the Healers through, until she was ready to return to the Clan. He remained with her through the months of recovery, while she learned to walk again. He dragged her to the elders to talk when nightmares kept her from sleeping and held her in the saddle in front of him until she could manage to stay on a horse alone. Whenever she asked why, he simply shrugged.

By the time Vera was named Voice of the Jinan, it wasn’t just stubborn guilt and loyalty keeping him by her side, it was also love. He had never met a soul with more endurance and will to survive than her. She was blunt and sharp all at once, vulnerable but unbreakable.

His hatred for those who had wronged her grew alongside his love. When the day the Mineborn called the Rains, Torin felt fierce pride in his witch’s courage before the Spider, and reveled in the Sabbah blood he was able to spill upon the ground.

Though it may have started as nothing more than one Clansman protecting another, Torin’s devotion to Vera has become absolute. He will be there for her every day of his life as whatever she needs him to be. As an escort, as a guard, or, as he hopes she will one day accept him, as a loving partner.

Character in Play:

The heat inside the tent was sweltering, the air sticky and thick with the smell of death. In the cot opposite him, a new haggard body had been brought in to take the place of the one that had left covered in a sheet an hour before. Next to where Torin sat on the rocky ground, the rattling breath of the yet-unnamed Jinan woman continued to steadily tell the time. He reached over, checking the temperature of the soaked cloth on her brow before pulling it off and dipping it again in the small bucket of cool water. This would be an excellent time not to be terrible at cooling things with Craft.

With a sigh, Torin replaced the towel, brushing damp black hair out of the woman’s face as he studied it for the thousandths time since he had begun her bedside vigil three days ago. At the time, the Healers had been uncertain if she would pull through, not with the infection that was burning her up from the inside. He had watched them change the bandages on her leg and had nearly been sick at the sight of the puss-filled wounds and mangled muscle. Yet he hadn’t excused himself, simply averted his eyes as he held the basin of water for the Healer.

Several days later, and the leg didn’t smell like death anymore. Her fever still burned, but there were brief periods of semi-consciousness interspersed within the sleep, moments in which her gold eyes opened and looked through him before closing once more.

He had just settled back on his folded up coat and picked up his book when the brush of something on his upper arm made his attention snap back to the bed. Her eyes were open and focused, although the lids still drooped as if sleep was not far off. The fingers that had brushed his arm were still there, and Torin carefully took them between his hands. She opened cracked lips, as if to speak, but Torin made a soft shushing sound.

“Don’t try to speak yet. Some water first.” He pulled his canteen from his belt and uncorked it, lifting it to her lips and allowing her to swallow a small mouthful. “There, one more. The Healers said the more water you have, the faster you’ll recover.”

“Am I dead?” Her voice was raspy and hoarse, but stronger than he expected. No whisper, just… a question.

“No. Not dead. You were hurt in the mines. Healers are tending to you. What’s your name?”

“Adavera.” she croaked.

“Adavera,” he repeated, then squeezed her hand, “I’m Torin al-Jinan. I’m going to watch over you for awhile. Nothing or no one will harm you while I’m here.”

Can I request White to Tiger Eye Jewels and 4 family rolls?
Home is behind, the world ahead, And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night, Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead, We'll wander back to home and bed.
