Personality

.

Personality:

Simin’s idea of the type of Queen she will be seems to be at odds with the idea that her tutors had been trying to ingrain in her.  She wants to be a Queen as long as she can stay out on the trade routes, on horseback, with the hot sun on her and the shimmering sands before her.  The idea and thought of being cooped up in a tent all the time, forced into uncomfortable fancy outfits and acting like her tutors are always telling her a Queen SHOULD behave sounds so confining.

She is a tomboy, known for irritating her mother and sisters by dressing in rough pants and loose shirts worn by the hands who tended the herds.  Despite their best attempts, she is often seen with wild blown hair and rough sun-touched skin.  She shows none of the interest in the finer luxuries that most females would fawn over and equally oblivious to her is the subject of men.   This is not to say that she lacks any interest in sex - after all she is a dark Jeweled young woman and very sensitive to the calls and hungers of her own body.  It’s just that most of the men that have been involved in her life thus far were of blood relation to her and never really drew her interest in that direction.

Simi is young, and still has some of the temper and disposition of a young woman on the cusp of adulthood despite her whole life having been prepared for the eventual responsibility and power that she would have.  She can be calm and diplomatic but many times her temper is known to flare at an implied insult or undermining comment.  She is stubborn, especially when she finds her intentions and desires are blocked or deterred for the simple reason of her age.  She finds it extremely frustrating when her decisions are called into question simply because of her youth.  In her mindset, why make her Queen early if they wanted to question her every move?

Despite her lack of interest in the finer, elegant points of being both a woman and a Queen, she understands her responsibility to her family, her tribe and her clan.  It had been ingrained in her as fiercely as her love and responsibility towards the herd.  Simi carries the hope of her Clan and her determination in helping her people prosper and grow along the trade routes in not only Pruul but all of Terrielle is an element of her personality that has driven her to exceed in her lessons.  Her tutors speak highly of her intelligence and willingness to work hard.

Simi has the spirit and drive of a wild horse with an energy benefited by her youth as well as her dark jewels.  She is proud of her Clan and wants more than anything to serve them well.   The Jinan had not been regarded as more than a mercantile people but she had hopes of elevating her clan to a strength usually associated with the Sabbah or the Bali.   Her proudest moment was the day she was finally allowed to receive her Clan tattoo, the silhouette of a  horse rearing rampart. .

Likes:
  • Horses- To say a member of the Jinan was crazy about horses was a little redundant but in the case of Simin, she was born with horse blood in her veins.  From the moment she was old enough to move on her own she was crawling towards the herd, reaching for tails and muzzles with a coo and a laugh.  She could ride practically before she could walk and moved as naturally on the back of a horse as she could on her own legs.

  • Stargazing- She loves going out to the herd at night, laying out in the corral and staring up at the night sky, watching the twinkling lights of the sky.  It is almost a spiritual experience for her, a realization of how small her world is in the midst of everything and how magnificent the Darkness can be.

  • Skandi - The strange boy she met so long ago still lingers in the back of her mind.   It had been so long since she had seen him that she was beginning to believe he might've been a mirage,  a vision from the desert that her child- like mind had made up to become the friend she desperately needed.

    Dislikes:
  • Fancy clothing - She disliked the strange feel of the richer and more expensive fabrics.  They always felt that at any minute they might melt under the harsh heat of the sun or tear at the slightest pull.  Give her rough woven sturdy cloth anyday that could withstand a hard, rough ride on the back of a stubbornly spirited stallion anyday.

  • Suitors - Now that she had made her offering, her mother was set on parading all the eligible males she could gather, in the hopes that one of them might catch Simi’s eye and heart.  Simi found the whole thing ridiculous. The very idea of romance and courtship was so strange to the young Queen who had never once felt the flutter of attraction for any male, viewing men as competition on horseback or a stubborn obstacle in the way of her freedom.  The whole event of her Virgin Night had been horrid and awkward, performed by an older distant cousin who had attempted to initiate her interest in the physical pleasures of the bedroom without any success other than to see her through unbroken for the next morning.

  • Clan Elders   A necessary annoyance, she had often thought about this group of men and women.  Not quite leaders in the traditional sense, they were the oldest members of the Clan who had taken over some of the yoke of leadership in the wake of a Queenless and Voiceless Clan.   She respected their experience but she was the Queen, shouldn’t she be able to decide on certain things without needing their permission first?  Why did it seem like everything she wanted to do was met with opposition at every turn?  She knew that traditions were important, but it seemed like every proposal she pressed forward was met with the same response, “that is not our way, that is not tradition.”  How was she supposed to push the Clan forward if they were still so bound to the past?

    Fears:
  • Letting down her tribe -A natural fear of any young leader, Simi has been told her whole life that she was going to be the lifeblood of her people, the revitalizer that the Clan needed.  It made the thought of failure even more overwhelming.
  • Being forced to give up her freedom - Simi has long understood that the carefree days of her childhood were no longer a possibility with the growing demands of responsibility, but her youth and wild spirit still seek to ride unfettered and free as she was always want to do.   She fears that to become the Queen needed, she would have to forsake her very sense of self.
  • The growing threat of Sandworms - It had been noted by her Clansmen that since the start of the Rains, the Sandworm population seemed to have become exponentially more active and more dangerous leading some to believe that the increase in available water was causing the creatures to swarm.  Already tribes had been reporting a number of their herds being devoured by the terrifying creatures.  Simi fears for and mourns the loss of the horses and worries that the continuing trouble would decimate the livelihood of her people.

    Craft Strengths:
  • Queen’s touch - It wasn’t only the animals in her care that received relief and care at her hand, but the males in her life.  Her tutor was near ecstatic at this news as her attempts to mold Simin into anything she felt that a Queen was supposed to be had always fallen to the wayside.

  • Animal Healing - her mother recognized the natural talent that the young girl had with the horses in their herd, the ability to understand the mood and feelings with the horses by the time she was able to walk and while she never exhibited any other Healer gifts or interest in pursuing any other healing skills, her talents developed into being able to deal with sore muscles and minor injuries.

    Spoiler (click to show/hide)

    Craft Weaknesses:
  • Queen’s Gift - Simi has no real connection to the land, It never called to her the way her tutors told her it should.  Whenever she would try to sense the needs of the ground beneath her feet all she could sense was the pounding of hooves and hear the sounds of the herd even though they were far away
  • Power Bolts - Despite her brothers’ best efforts to teach her some offensive spells, she could never get the handle on using her craft as a weapon.  She had nothing against defending herself but to become violent and attack someone was just out of her character.

    History:

    Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Simi had been a child unexpected, conceived and born at a time when her mother had assumed she was long past her childbearing years. All her siblings were past the age of their Offerings, grown adults themselves, some with children of their own when her mother found herself pregnant. Being a Healer and knowing the risks to both mother and child at such a time she had prepared herself for the possibility that the child could be unhealthy perhaps even not survive the terms of pregnancy. However, to everyone's surprise, both she and the child developed healthy and strong and the delivery went very quickly. At her birth, it seemed perhaps that her mother’s fears had been true, because instead of the dark color that usually graced a newborn’s eyes, Simin was born with eyes such a pale gray that both the midwife and the mother had assumed that the child was born blind. This was quickly proven untrue as the little baby’s eyes attentively watched everything around her with keen intellect and interest.   It was also exciting for the tribe that she was a Queen.  There had not been a Queen born to their tribal family in centuries, and since the last of the clan Queens had been killed in a raiding party, this was the first Queen born to the Clan.

News of her birth spread quickly throughout the clan, revitalizing hope within the wandering Horse Lords who had been leaderless for several years.  There was much argument as to what should happen with the child.  Some argued to take her away from her family and raise her in Onn, grooming her intrinsically for the life she would be expected to lead.  Others argued that a Queen of the Jinan must live as the Clan lived and wanted her to remain with her family, traveling the deserts with the herd and experiencing the harsh reality of the Clan’s day to day lives.  Finally, a compromise was agreed upon.  Simin would remain with her family and after her Birthright Ceremony, the best available tutors would be sent to live in her family’s caravan to teach the young girl all that she would need to know to be a wise and successful ruler.

So Simin grew up as any other girl of the Jinan, surrounded by the scent of horses and wind whipped sands of Pruul, moving from place to place.  When Simi was six, a group of traders came to their encampment looking to purchase fresh horses to revitalize their own herd. She was too small to be included in the discussions but she still stuck around the tents to listen in and spy on the strangers. The one thing that caught her attention was the two boys who were mirror images of each other, yet one drew her interest so much more.

Simi was a warm vibrant child but it usually took her a little time to warm to strangers.   Something about this boy made her feel safe and happy as if she had known him her whole life.  She quickly hurried up to him, taking him by the hand and decisively told him she knew exactly the pony that was supposed to go home with him. Simi remained with him for the entire length of his visit showing him her horses and teaching him how to touch them in a way that they liked.  She told him things and thoughts and secrets that she never shared with anyone until that point.  Her father and brothers had been less than pleased with this development but she had stubbornly put her foot down and told them that he was her friend and he would stay with her as long as she wanted.

There was something in the way the adults had looked at her, judging the expression on her face that had finally allowed this interaction to go on uncontested until the boy and his herd had completed their visit and left with probably better horses than they might have originally obtained. Simi made sure her friend took the young gelding that she said belonged to him. Skander, well that was the name she had called him because his real name was just so long, had promised he would come to see her again.  Simin had looked for him every year thereafter whenever the next group of horses was ready for market.   He never reappeared, and it had crushed the little girl who began to wonder if he hadn’t just forgotten about her as some did when they grew up and put aside the promises of childhood.

    Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Coming away from her Birthright with the Opal only solidified the truth that she would one day become Queen to the clan. The year after her Birthright, another Queen was finally born to the Clan, and then another the following year.  Three Queens, on whom all the hopes for the tribe rested on their young and small heads and no head wore a greater weight than Simi’s.  True to the agreement made when she was a newborn, the best tutors were arranged to join her and her time became occupied in studying all the finer points of Protocol, ruling and Clan histories, all to prepare her for the fast arriving day when she would step up to become the Clan Queen.

Even though she understood her role to play in the future, the young child had enjoyed a carefree youth before her Birthright,  freely allowed to spend time nurturing and bonding with the horses that her family raised and sold. Like all of her tribe, she was a natural horsewoman.  It was quickly realized that Simin was gifted with the rare ability to understand and even heal the four-legged members of the Clan.  Her mother had been excited and hopeful that her daughter would be a doubly blessed dual casted child, but Simi didn't want to be a Healer and a Queen. Even at a young age, she understood that her role was a singular one, and while she wanted to develop this very rare gift, the core of her lessons and practice was to prepare herself for the day that she would step up to the role her caste prepared her for.

When the Voice of the Clan passed away, it seemed that the Jinan were left leaderless and rudderless until she would make her Offering and reach her majority.  At only fifteen years old, that time was still several years away.  Thankfully, a Voice rose out of the desert from a young woman who had survived the cruel treatment of the Mines, a Voice that commanded attention and respect despite even her relatively young age.  Simi was adamant about corresponding with this new Leader, eager to have the backing and support of someone who would have many years of experience to learn from before she was ready to make her own transition. Simi began a correspondence with this young Voice, and over the last several years struck up a mentorship that bordered on friendship through the passage of letters and missives.

On her 18th birthday word reached her tribe that there was trouble brewing in Onn. The Voice of the Sabbah seem to be behaving strangely and there was talk of rising concern from many of the other clans and tribes over the future of Pruul with such a powerful unstable leader. Despite tradition, the clan elders decided that the Jinan had been too long without a Queen to center around. It was decided that she would make her Offering that same year and rise to the seat of power.

Simi has been groomed for this moment, has attended lessons and learned what it meant to rule but still had no real exposure to the tangled maze of clan politics.  She descended to the level of the Red in her Offering, making her a very powerful Queen in strength but still untried and unknowing Queen in practice.  Men from the other nomadic tribes were being summoned together to be presented to her, to form the necessary circle of Power that would support and guide the young Queen.  The elder selected the best of the older males in the hopes that their experience would be a strong guiding force for the new young Queen  but many of the men had never truly served in a court and those that had once served other Queens had not done so in many years, and never to a Queen so very inexperienced and young.

In all of this Simi felt swallowed by the sea of responsibility that had suddenly come up over her, like a stampede of horses that she could not run away from and all she could hope was that the hooves never hit her.  She had thought she still had a few more years to grow into the feel of this role, two more years to gather experience where she could.  Still, she was determined to do well for her tribe and her clan, especially after news of Adavera al-Jinan’s call against the Sabbah voice, standing with the Mineborn.  There were some who did not agree with the decision of the Voice, feeling that her decision placed the Jinan in a position of vulnerability against the larger and more powerful Sabbah clan.  Some had heard or seen the Miracle of the Mineborn with their own eyes and were leaving generational ties to the Horse Lords to join and follow their banner instead.   Simi was not only tasked with uniting the Clan behind her but to give the Jinan reason not to seek allegiances elsewhere, a strong young powerful Queen to rally behind once again.

    Character in Play:

Simi lay back on a blanket, the warm body of her mount close enough that she didn’t feel the chill of the night.  Above her, the sky was vast, black as ink but filled with a million points of light that flickered and twinkled silently.  There was no moon, lending more to the encompassing darkness and making it feel like the sky was slowly drifting down towards her.  She sighed deeply, inhaling the rich scent of horse that surrounded her, as the faint whispers of the herd carried through the air.

Here she was happy, here she found peace.  How much longer would she be able to have these nights, tucked away and surrounded by the creatures she loved so much?  Would she be forced to have guards watching her every move?  Would she be restricted to sleeping only in her bed, passing time with the herd only when it could be scheduled in by some official?   Tomorrow, her life would change completely, tomorrow she would be presented to the males of the Clan, to view and be viewed and to see who would serve in her Court and who would serve her.  Simi’s hand drifted up to the Red jewel that rested in the hollow of her collar, cold and vibrant against her skin.  It still felt so strange and new, this part of herself.  She had not expected to make a full descent, not at such a young age and it was a daunting thought to bear the responsibility of caste and such a dark power.

She closed her eyes and imagined herself riding away into the desert, the herd running freely behind her, away from the everything that lurked after the dawn.  To be free and unfettered, suddenly she ached for it and found herself harnessed to the same responsibility that she had known would someday come for her.  No, she couldn’t run free like an untamed mare but she would not become a broken, hobbled creature either.

With a sigh, she turned and curled up against the warm shoulder of her mount, feeling his mouth lip at her hair as she closed her eyes and enjoyed this last night when she was still just Simi, and not yet the Queen.
