Personality

Personality:

Shadya is young and ill-suited to restraint or holding her tongue. When she’s required to, such as in Court, the difficulty is etched in her expression. As a Black Widow, she's used to making her will known and dealing with the consequences. Her gaze is penetrating and eerily fixed on the person she’s talking to, as if she’s seconds away from learning every secret a person holds. Shadya is opinionated and rarely spares anyone her sharp tongue or cutting insights. She’s been called mean-spirited and bitchy, but spiders don’t pay attention to flies unless they’re consuming them. She makes no apologies for who she is. A person always knows where they stand with Shadya because life is too short for games.

Shadya loves the mysteries presented by her caste and her visions in the Twisted Kingdom. Solving riddles and unlocking the secrets of her world and the Twisted Kingdom makes her strive to be the best. She revels in outmaneuvering others and removing threats to her clan before they arise. She is Elenor’s Seer and knife in the dark, using people’s fear and unease with Black Widows to her advantage. Those reactions draw her attention and soon Shadya’s examining your life, in your business, and preparing to steal your secrets to protect her clan and Queen.

Losing her parents at a young age has spurred Shadya to grab life by the throat and wring from it every pleasure possible. She defends the people who are hers and works hard to please them. Greedy for new experiences and highs, she'll try anything once..and more than once if she enjoys it. Keeping secrets comes naturally to Shadya, because some people aren’t meant to handle the deeper truths in the world.

Emotional intimacy terrifies Shadya, and most of her demeanor is a defense mechanism meant to protect her from her deeply held compassion for others. She can't stand crying or tears because they affect her too easily. Losing her older sister has cut her deeper than she can express. With the last member of her birth family dead, Shadya fears that her long lived family will either murdered by their enemies or outlive her and forget her in a century. Rather than express that fear and deal with it, Shadya armors herself with aggression. Physically, socially, and sexually, Shadya strikes first to keep people off-base and force them on the defensive where they can’t probe her weaknesses.

An Eyrien taught her that the best defense is a good offense. Shadya takes that lesson to heart each day.

Likes:

  • 1. Vulgar Jokes: Shadya is a Court Seer, but that doesn’t mean that she's lost her sense of humor. Vulgar jokes make her day and give her a window into a person’s demeanor. She’s memorized hundreds of them and is always listening for more. She loves to slip them into conversations to throw people off. Bonus points if she has to explain it in graphic detail so that the other person can’t stop thinking about it later.

  • 2. Craft: Shadya respects the Landen drive and ability to get through life without Craft, but she can’t imagine being without the magic of her people. Whether it’s creating a web, repairing a chalice, or just calling an object to her hand from afar, Shadya uses Craft every chance she gets.

  • 3. Serving Her Clan: While she can be crass and hard to approach, Shadya is proud of her role in Elenor's First Circle and enjoys helping her people. Her uncle’s centuries of protection and devotion to the Sabbah has instilled in a love for helping her people whenever they ask (and even when they don’t). She may feign annoyance when they ask her for help, but Shadya is honored whenever people ask for her help or insight to solve a problem.

    Dislikes:

  • 1. Being short-lived: She envies Fin’s long life. Five thousand years of life would be wonderful, but she’s 100% short-lived. While she’s glad that Judiah and Elenor will be there for Fin after she dies, Shadya is also jealous that both women will be his family after she’s gone.

  • 2. Lucky al-Izar: While Shadya's views of the Mineborn vary, she has already made up her mind about Lucky al-Izar. He nearly killed Amira two years ago during his fight with Gideon Cinerus. Fin feels some strange responsibility to him, one that's nearly gotten him killed more than once. Now that Lucky's leading the Mineborn and sniffing around Elenor, Shadya's annoyance with the man has increased a hundredfold.

  • 3. Sleeping Alone: Shadya hates sleeping, in general, but it’s easier to bear when she can hold someone or run her fingers through their hair or across their skin. She doesn’t mind when a person does the same for her. Sex is great, but she’s happy enough to just sleep beside someone...even if they snore.

    Fears:

  • 1. Dying: Her parents died when she was young. Amira is recently gone. Each day, Shadya feels like she sees another sign of her mortality in the wings. Elenor, Judiah, and Fin might as well be immortal compared to years that she will live. Shada fears that, at the end of her life, there will be only darkness. More than that, she fears that Amira will be long, long gone to whatever peace she has earned that she will be well and truly alone.

  • 2. Losing the Sabbah Civil War: Shadya is proud to be Sabbah. Her family stretches back generations in the Clan. So it galls her that the so-called True Sabbah has the audacity to lay sole claim to that legacy. Shadya has foreseen that Elenor’s Court loses the oncoming battle against the True Sabbah, but not the scale of the loss. Now she’s in crisis mode, looking for any way to mitigate the damage and ensure that something of the Sabbah survives to be reestablished in the future.

  • 3. Fin won’t return in her lifetime: Amira and Fin were the constants in Shadya’s life. Now, her sister is dead and her uncle has returned to his homeland to stop a madman from coming to Pruul. Shadya understands why he left, even if she hates it. Fin has no further reason to stick around. If he chooses to stay in Askavi for sixty years, Shadya will grow old and die alone. He's protected her entire life. Now she may not ever see him again.

    Craft Strengths:

  • 1. Mind Healing: Shadya’s skill in this Craft allows her to heal the scars of mental trauma that come from repeated compulsions or tampering with the mind. She’s especially adept of skillfully unweaving the nasty traps and surprises left behind by Black Widows who tamper with the minds of others.

  • 2. Protecting Inner Barriers: Those attempting to enter Shadya’s mind without permission find themselves shunted directly into the Twisted Kingdom with little hope of escape. Her secrets belong to her. Violating a Black Widow's mind is a bad way to end life.

    Craft Weaknesses:

  • 1. Illusion Webs: Fin taught Shadya to never hide or apologize for who she is. Shadya’s illusions are terrible. She can disguise small objects for a short time, but wearable illusions to disguise appearance, caste and jewels almost always fall apart quickly, if they work at all.

  • 2. Jewel Management: Shadya needed her sister to remind her of her limits. Amira's passing has broken Shadya's restraint where Craft is concerned, and Shadya now drains her jewels faster than expected.

    Life Story

    Family:

Mother: Tamina al-Sabbah - White to Tiger Eye  Healer (d.175 AP)
Father: Faqir al-Sabbah - Yellow to Rose Prince (d.175 AP)

Sister: Amira al-Sabbah - Rose to Opal Priestess,  Age 25 (Born 168 AP - Died 193 AP in the sandworm attack at Onn)

"Uncle": Tavar al-Sabbah, Purple Dusk to Sapphire Warlord, Age 1252 (born 1059 BP)

    History:

Shadya al-Sabbah is the second daughter born to Tamina and Faqir al-Sabbah, three years after her sister, Amira. The sisters were close from the start and would remain so throughout their lives. She was four years old when Fin al-Sabbah, an Eyrien Warlord, returned from one of his long absences that took him away from Clan Sabbah for decades on end. She accepted her “uncle” without reservation and often grated on her parents’ nerves with constant queries about when she could see him again. By the time her Birthright Ceremony arrived, Shadya was begging her uncle to teach her to fight for the glory of Clan Sabbah. Fin congratulated her on her Tiger Eye but gently refused, vowing to revisit the matter when she was older.

Her parents died the following year and Fin took them in, rooting him to the clan for the first time in centuries. Shadya emulated her uncle’s forthright nature, refusing to lie or spare people’s feelings when they needed truth. Her snaketooth emerged at thirteen, giving her a clearer understanding of her shifts in mood. Uncle Fin seemed nervous around her, so leaving to train was a welcome break from her family.

Black Widow training exposed her mind and body to sensations and desires that she’d craved but couldn’t name. Shadya loved her Tangled Webs and poisons but working with the minds of others captured the lion's share of her attention. Humbled by the power she wielded, she realized that few could handle the secrets imparted by her caste. At seventeen, Fin gave Shadya the first knife ever given to him by his own father. This mended the rift between them and brought them closer than ever.

She asked Amira to perform her Offering Ceremony, receiving her Purple Dusk. Honored to share a  jewel with her uncle, Shadya worked to prove her worth to Clan Sabbah. She nearly lost Amira during a fight between Lucky al-Izar and Gideon Cinerus, a visiting Priest Warlord Prince from Hayll. Meanwhile, it took all of Shadya’s cunning to bring Fin together with the "sex lady" Judiah Vidanic, whom her uncle was clearly attracted to.

Shadya hated Adramelech al-Sabbah and his followers for their dominance over the Sabbah and their support of the Geiba’s treachery. When Adramelech was slain by the Mineborn, Shadya believed that Fin's guidance would set the clan on the right path. Instead, the Old Spider's followers branded themselves the "True Sabbah" and threw her uncle’s mercy in his face with their xenophobic propaganda. Despite her advice, Fin refused to slaughter the separatists on the advice of his newfound Queen, Elenor al-Sabbah.

The True Sabbah threatened Amira's life to force Shadya into assassinating Elenor during her Trials. Shadya failed in her task, though Fin managed to save Amira. Shadya has hated the True Sabbaah ever since, especially their leader, Zhaleh al-Sabbah.

Expecting death for her actions against Elenor, Shadya was instead made her Seer. She sensed her uncle's hand in the appointment and resented his interference. Shadya relented when Elenor agreed to her request for a blood bond to enforce Shadya's loyalty. The relationship between the women has shifted from unease to a burgeoning friendship, though Shadya calls out her Queen when she’s being careless with her life. Elenor's recklessness motivated her to join Elenor on her journey across Terreille to help the Sabbah find new sources of water. She narrowly survived the Decimation of Dena Nehele and was relieved when Elenor confirmed their return to Pruul in time for the summer festivals. But her newfound worldliness came at a heavy cost:

Amira was slain by sandworms in her absence.

    Character in Play:

"Shadya al-Sabbah, my necklace please. And the antidote to whatever it is you poisoned me with."

Fear gripped Shadya's heart and she froze before she could finish her soup. Her webs had shown her this moment one hundred times, but she still felt unprepared. One hundred webs, one hundred possible futures and ninety-nine of them ended with Uncle Fin standing over three dead bodies as the True Sabbah closed in on him.

The only future that held any hope saw them swimming through an ocean of blood while passing plenty of their own.

Lady Lirion, are you making an accusation?” Zhaleh asked. Shadya nearly threw the hot bowl of stew in the woman’s face and told her to do her own dirty work. She wanted to march out of there, find Amira, and guard her until morning. She could do neither of those things. Amira was already at the temple for the night and the compound was locked down.

Shadya tensed as Zhaleh spoke to her.

What do you have to say for yourself, Lady Shadya?

Elenor would never trust her after today. Uncle Fin would hate her. Even Judiah wouldn’t like her anymore, and that made her angry. If Elenor Lirion had never come to Pruul, Shadya wouldn’t have to betray her family to keep them safe. Elenor was important to people she loved. But if she lived, Amira would die and that left Shadya no choice.

The silence in the courtyard was deafening. Elenor waited, hand outstretched. Zhaleh sneered.

    Shadya was sick of waiting.

She handed the necklace to Elenor with her left hand and closed her right upon her ritual dagger, given to her by Fin years ago. Shadya snarled, hoping that the poison hadn’t fully compromised her. She swung for Elenor’s throat and prayed that the Queen was ready to fight for her life.

    The strike missed.

Shadya would have cheered if the moment wasn't fraught with peril. Instead, she pressed her attack. All Elenor had to do was stay alive until Uncle Fin arrived. He would end this. He was the Voice of the Sabbah and they would listen to him.

Queen and Black Widow circled each other, but Shadya saw Elenor’s eyes losing focus, signaling the poison's effectiveness. It wouldn’t kill her, but the hallucinogen would make her wish she was dead a few hours from now as her mind summoned all of her demons into being. Shadya couldn’t stall forever without tipping off Zhaleh that she was playing her false. She lunged forward and opened a gash on her shoulder. The scent of blood, Queen’s blood, hit the floor and Shadya's soul screamed that this was wrong! This was unnatural! And yet Shadya couldn’t stop. Stopping meant Amira’s death. So she attacked again and again, praying that Fin was on the way. But he didn’t come.

Elenor snarled and something in her expression shifted into rage.

That was the moment that Shadya knew her folly.

The next  moments were a blur. The two women fought like demons, neither able to gain control. Soon, though, Elenor had the knife and was pinning her to the floor. Scenes from her life flashed before her eyes.

The loss of her parents. Fin's arrival. Amira laying in the rubble of the Sabbah house. Dinner with Judiah. The death of the Old Spider.

Elenor, here to end her life.

    Elenor, stop!

    The Opal Queen froze.

Shadya pushed for all she was worth, unseating Elenor and dropping her to the floor. She called her knife back and leaped atop her uncle's Queen. The Black Widow did then what she should have done at the beginning: she told her the truth.

The knife bit into Elenor’s skin as the Queen’s rage spiked. Shadya was on her back again. Elenor drove her elbow into Shadya’s face and the darkness took her. She knew no more.

She woke sometime later to sensation of a cool cloth against her forehead. It hurt to breathe. Amira sat quietly nearby, tending her injuries while she hummed an old lullaby that their mother used to sing. Uncle Fin stood at the foot of the bed, black wings wrapped around his slender frame like a cloak made of shadows. Was he here to disown her? He was holding her knife. Shadya’s heart sank.

When you can get out of bed, Elenor wishes to speak with you.” Fin said.

Shadya winced as much from humiliation as pain.

    She was a dead woman.

Approved for all the Elenor bits!
Home is behind, the world ahead, And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night, Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead, We'll wander back to home and bed.
