Play By: Janibek Bakyt
Distinguishing Features:
Salome is missing her left arm below the elbow.  She also has vicious scars that cover her upper back, bleeding up onto the back of her neck, and one large scar on the side of her head, which is why she always wears a headscarf.

Personality

Personality:
Salome is a quiet creature now.  She strives to be fairly unobtrusive, unnoticeable, and ultimately forgettable; these things are the things that keep someone in her situation safe.  Inside her soul, however, Salome is not so quiet.  Beneath the mask of Salome Sands she is Salome al-Geiba.  She has endured the fires of Raej, and the sting of betrayal, and she will endure whatever else life throws at her as well.

But this time, when life throws something at her, she will fight.  She knows now, after lessons hard learned, that life will not play by fair rules.  She knows that those in power cannot be trusted to do the right thing, and so the right thing must be done by those with the will and courage to DO them.

The Geiba did horrible things and the guilt of her Tribe weighs heavy on her heart.  Even so she truly believes that what was done to them was wrong.  How could Pruul's Mother be so willing to throw away the lives of children?  Her little sister had only been seventeen.  When she learned of the horror of that day she was sick with grief.  She was furious that more of Pruul was not willing to stand for children.

The Geiba did horrible things but the children of the Geiba still live.  She has dedicated herself to doing whatever is necessary to care for as many as she can.  What food she can buy, work for, or steal she will often give away to the children who are obviously in more need.  That she is using only enough for herself to survive matters little.  She might be too thin, she might seem a bit starved, but if the children are fed enough to grow strong she will consider the effort worthy.

She was an adult when the Geiba's duplicity was discovered and while she tried to do the right thing she ultimately failed.  What is a little hunger in comparison to the blood spilled over the Mines?  What is a little discomfort in comparison to the pains of the children that have survived her naive trust in the Old Spider?

This is her Price.

Likes:
  • 1.  Children :  The orphans on the streets of Onn are tragic with their loss but they are also some of the strongest people that Salome has ever met.  She enjoys spending her time with the children, looking after them, and trying to make their lives a little easier.  She has no illusions that she will ever have a child of her own - what life could she provide for children of her flesh - but she fulfills that desire by taking care of those who have no one else to care for them.
  • 2.  Pain :  It reminds her she is alive.  It reminds her that the Masters couldn't break her and that every scar and injury is proof that she is stronger.  It reminds her that she is the wall between those that can take the punishments of life and those that can't.
  • 3.  Fighting : It is better to fight and die free than to die collared or a coward.  She loves to fight.  When everything starts to crash down around her ears, when the world seems to make no sense, she can sink into the clarity of a fight to right the world again - even if just for a few moments.  She will spar with anyone that is willing and she will laugh even if she loses.  The point is to fight; it isn't about always winning.
Dislikes:
  • 1.  Clan Sabbah - they knew.  They knew what was going on.  She knows they did because she told Adramalech herself.  After she told him he then sold her to Raej.  She knows that not everyone in the Sabbah is a monster.  There has to be good people too because she knows that not every Geiba was terrible obviously.  She's not willing to risk going to look for one when she might be recognized by the Clan that her fallen tribe belonged to though.
  • 2.  Politics :  It is the source of every evil known to man she is certain of it.  Politics is driven by money, and greed, and lies.  She would much rather tend to the actual problems in Pruul than try to convince a bunch of greedy politicians that they should do it.  Maybe she doesn't have the money to do it on the scale it needs done but if everyone would do what so obviously needs done then the problems would go away.
  • 3.  Bullies : She's spooked people off the 'easy prey' before and she enjoys doing so.  Bullies make her stomach curdle.  That bullies are so often ignored by those in power drives her crazy.  Whenever she comes across a bully she makes it a point to try to make their life difficult in some way.
Fears:
  • 1.  Slavery :  She's endured it before.  She will not endure it again.  She has been beaten nearly to death.   She has experienced the cruelty of Landen, and Blood, and she will kill anyone who tries to enslave her again.  Better to die free than live as a collared whipping girl.
  • 2.  Sandworms : Before the High Summer Festival sandworm attacks were an academic concern.  Now?  Well, now she knows all too well what it is like to have Sandworm teeth in one's flesh, and to hear the screams of the dying when Sandworms attack.  She wakes in a sweat at night, gasping for air as she remembers the High Festival and their deadly visitors.  She will never forget it, never be able to forget the sensation of teeth in her hand, and signs of Worms on the horizon is more than enough to have her bolting for the safety of the walls.
  • 3.   Being Discovered :  She came back after the Slaughter unknowing of the fate of her family.  She heard rumors that the Geiba had been decimated but she thought that the rumors were exaggerations.  She didn't know, for certain, that they were dead until she came back to Onn.  She doesn't dare present herself to any Clans for trials.  She doesn't dare try to be anything more than another poor Onn-Dweller because she won't go back to Raej.  Maybe she would be able to make sure no one ever guesses by staying an unnoticed loner but she can't ignore the neglected Geiba kids on the streets either.  So she'll steal, and rob, and do whatever is necessary to help them survive despite the risks.
Craft Strengths:
  • 1. Reflex Craft :  She can't run faster than the eye can see, or have the endurance of a Warlord Prince.. but she can react faster than most to attacks or surprises.
  • 2.  Balance Craft : Salome doesn't trip due to clumsiness.  While she can be forced over in a fight, she tends to know how to best recover from it AS she falls, and will be able to try to turn such maneuvers to her advantage in unexpected ways.
Craft Weaknesses:
  • 1.  Shielding : Salome cannot shield.  At all.  She's never managed it, and even after everything that has happened, still has not found a method to do so.  Dealing with sandstorms has to be done in the 'landen' way.
  • 2.  Cooling Spells : For someone who has lived in two desert territories.. this is more than a just a bit 'annoying'.  This is downright devastating at times.  Overheating is a real problem, and being able to use Craft to keep herself a little cooler would be very useful.

History:
She was like any other child of Pruul.  Her parents came together, they made her, named her after her Grandmother Salima, and she was raised as all children of Pruul are meant to be raised. She was instructed in the traditions of her family, Tribe, and Clan.  She was taught their history and their stories.

She was taught of Honor and Tradition.

When she was about twenty, those lessons proved themselves true in her heart.  She approached Adramalech al-Sabbah to report that she had heard disturbing things from the Mines.  She had heard there was a Black Queen beneath the sands, and that Pruulians were being captured by Raiders and sold as slaves to the mines.

He had sworn to her that he would look into this terrible thing, and had offered her water from his own stock.  She'd drank without concern, for the Spider would take care of everything.

The world had then blurred into a large mass of color and sound, and by the time she emerged from her dozy confusion she'd found herself tied up, gagged, and thrown in a caravan bound for Raej.

She was sold to Raej as a slave for daring to speak out against the wrongs of the mines, and she was expected to never survive.  She knew she was expected to never survive, because most of the slaves sold to her Master did not.

It was known, apparently.  Every slave there held a sort of fierce despair that she came to know better than her own name at times.  She endured beatings that had killed others, and she continued to work hard anyways.  She constantly watched for opportunities, and she tried to take them.

She knew the bite of the Collar often enough over the next few years to derive a sort of spiteful pleasure from its pain.  When her back and neck were scarred so badly her Tribe mark disappeared, she did not weep.

When a whip caught her across the side of hte head so badly that it scarred her skull and caused a gash where no hair would grow, she did not cry.

When she was dragged in front of her Master, and was told that he would see her dead for daring to help another slave escape its overseer.. she laughed at him.

In fury, he had strode up close to grab her about the throat.  And she had set her carefully stolen knife into his heart.  She'd felt his blood spill across her face, and had twisted about to send that knife soaring through the air into the face of the Overseer who was staring in stunned silence.

She freed as many of the slaves there that night as she could.  And after packing as much water into a bag as she could, she'd fled into the desert.

She bartered her work to caravans on her way back to Onn, scheming all the way of how she would get vengeance on Adramalech for what he had done.  But as the nights passed, she learned that her vengeance was not to be.

It had already been claimed by children from the mines.  And her Tribe?  The Geiba, she was told, had been slaughtered.  Everyone over the age of eight, everyone past their Birthright, was dead.

Her world shattered that night when she heard such a thing - and for the first time, she felt gratitude that she had given her name as 'Salome Sands'.  She felt gratitude that her neck and back were so scarred there would be no proof of who she was.

She reached Onn, and took to the streets like a shadow in an alley.  She taught herself to steal, and to survive.  Better to be free and poor than to live as a slave.  Better to fight for every scrap of survival, and know that she earned it.

When she first found Yari, or he found her, she nearly panicked.  When his 'brother' of a Warlord Prince cornered her in an alley, she readied herself for a blade entering her body.  In this case, she would not fight back.

A Geiba child had every reason to demand that an adult of their Tribe die.  She'd squeezed her eyes shut, and held herself still, and then waited.  He had shoved her to her knees, and she expected the blade to go for her throat.  She had been oddly grateful that he would make it quick.

But then he'd tipped her hair out of the way, studying her neck.  And he just... stared.  She didn't know what he was thinking, or wanting, and it made her uneasy.

"Where are you sleeping?  Have you eaten?  That was smart, not healing the skin near the tattoo."  She had been so startled that she'd told him it hadn't been an option.

Being taken in by a child should have shamed her.  Instead, it had warmed the cold hole left by the absence of her family.  When she'd learned of just how many Geiba children were left to starve on the streets, and how many were being abused, she'd promised to assist where she could.

She doesn't try to run their lives.  They have a Queen, even if many of them don't know.  And even if they asked her to, she wouldn't do it.  She'd failed them once already.

She wouldn't fail them again.  That was her oath.

When the High Festival came, she'd actually gone out into the crowds to look for wealthy pockets to pick.  It was her reflexes that saved her when the Worms arrived.  She felt teeth scrape her hand, but the man beside her was swept into the mouth of a beast.  Without flinching, she lopped off her arm below the elbow, wrapping a belt around the stub before taking off for the city.

It wasn't a guarantee that she would survive the touch of a Sandworm's teeth - but it was a better chance than trying to ride out the risk.

She survived.  Many others did not.  So many Tribes felt loss on a level that only the Geiba would understand, and like the children, she was willing to help where she could.

Unlike the children, she wasn't willing to be SEEN doing so.

Her job, as she came to find, was to 'find' food for those that otherwise wouldn't eat.  Being a thief might not be the most honorable life.. but it was better than death.

Show Us What You've Got

Character in Play:
Her hand was bleeding.  Her pinkie was hanging by a thin thread of skin.  That didn't matter.  Resolved, she drew a blade from a nearby stall.  Her hand rested against the top of the sales' top, despite the madness occurring around her.  She braced, and then swung her new blade down against her forearm.

It took two swings.  Even she had to scream at the sensations.  But the blade was sharp, and it was well made.  It cut through.  She let her arm drop to the ground, pulling a sword belt from the stall to wrap around the bleeding stump.  She tightened it, cursing at the agony echoing up her arm.

The new blade stayed in her blood coated right arm, and she began racing for the walls.  It was a whisper, a flicker of movement, that had her leaping for the small hillock of sand to the side.  The sandworm that erupted where she had been standing sailed past her, crashing into another woman that had been fleeing.

She caught her breath, scrambling towards the walls again.  A cry to the left caught her attention.  She moved without thinking, dropping the new blade into the sand before scooping the small toddler there up in her arm.  Her heart was racing.  This could be the day that Death took her.  This could be the day she finally lost that fight.

But she wouldn't go down easy.  Never.

There were multiple close calls.  There were so many times she had to leap for it, or stop at a dead standstill to let the beasts slide past her.  They still almost didnt' make it.  She kept the girl with her until she could find Barin, collapsing in front of him as her lungs erupted in sand-filled coughs at last.

".. no.. parents..I.. think..."  She needed water.  She was so hot.  Her arms moved forward as if to brace against the ground, and she found herself toppling over for the first time in ages.  Oh, right.  One arm, not two.

"What the fuck, Sal?"
".. got bit."  She laughed a little hysterically, staring up at that concerned face.  "Dun worry.. I cut it off myself.  Probably.. needs to be shaved.. though."
That answering growl from the young Warlord Prince made her laugh harder, even as her vision swam.  It was worth it.  She'd saved at least one child.

One less body to fill a sandworm's belly.  It wasn't a bad legacy, was it?  She almost didn't feel the water as someone began pouring it between her lips.   Her arm hurt.. and it was starting to be a good thing. She was still alive.

Maybe next time, Death.

good for Barin and Geiba orphans mentions.
Home is behind, the world ahead, And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night, Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead, We'll wander back to home and bed.

Hey Erica, we don't do Birthright only rolls for family rolls. But you can determine that the family roll is BR only.
