Personality

Personality:
Eloquent with words, elegant with her khanjar. Naamah embodies water in the way she moves and how she lives her life. To outsiders, she’s a bit of a dichotomy -- a Healer warrior -- but she will tell you that there is balance between opposites and she lives in that space. Not too far in any direction, she flows through life with a serenity and ease that others envy.

At least, until recently.

For a woman living in Pruul, she is well aware of changes but does not do well with great changes. And for a Healer versed with death, all of her dealings with it so far have been with patients. Change and death have not touched her deeply until this year and she struggles with returning to the balance she once had. Where was she was once calm and centered, she now feels adrift and struggles with a sharp desire for revenge. She’s desperately seeking a return to normal but has yet to adjust to the fact that normal has changed. This manifests to others as a negativity that was previously not there and a bouts of sharp frustration that she finds herself apologizing over more than usual. She has also noticed a sharp protective streak nowadays, an aversion to change or things that might put someone she loves at risk.

Aside from this turmoil, Naamah comes across as a woman sure of herself, a quiet sort of leader that others can rely upon to guide them through tough times. With one hand, she can be seen wielding her weapon in the defense of her tribe, and with her other hand, she can be seen healing the wounds inflicted on that beloved tribe. It’s a duality that comes easily to her, a giver and a taker of life. This public persona used to also be her private persona but recently that has changed. Still, Naamah’s serenity follows her and her patients trust her unreservedly. They do have a tendency to tease her that she needs to take some time to herself, since she is so commonly seen in the Healers’ tent while her daughters are in the creche, but Naamah can’t help herself sometimes. She needs to make certain her people are healthy and whole. Their lives in balance are an extension of her own.

In her spare time, she can be found spending time with her daughters, as well as cooking and practicing her swordfighting. When Naamah is very happy, she sings. She believes now that she will never find someone who loved her like Suraj did, especially with what she deems as this darkness inside of her. This doubt manifests itself as self-deprecation -- little jabs at herself and sad smiles -- but should Naamah ever find it in her heart to love again, she will blossom like she had before.

Likes:
  • 1 - Cooking. Naamah appreciates not only the craft of making food for others but the joy of experiencing well-cooked foods. Spices are her favorite thing to bring home from the market since she can now experiment with them at home. Some of Naamah’s favorite memories of Suraj was when they cooked dinners together.
  • 2 - Educating others. This can be as grand as giving a class on Healing techniques or as small as showing her daughters how to do some task on their own. Naamah enjoys imparting wisdom to others because of all that she has learned.
  • 3 - Words. Not just reading them, but speaking them, hearing them, tasting them on her tongue. Naamah is a huge fan of poetry and eloquent prose. Her personal tent has beautiful hangings with scriptures and other old poetry.
Dislikes:
  • 1 - Extremism. Being a person of balance, Naamah hates in others what she sees developing so strongly within herself again. Fanatics, zealots -- it doesn’t matter what end of the political or religious spectrum they fall on, all extremism inherently tips the scales too far and leads to ruin, something that she has learned from her younger years.
  • 2 - Being blindly told what to do. Naamah will go along with many things, so long as she understands the reasons behind it. Leaders who command and then won’t allow questions or the possibility of other routes anger Naamah, who likes to consider her options before making a decision.
  • 3 - Someone else handling her weapons. Naamah would prefer that someone handle her Jewels before they take her weapons. She has extra enchantments on them to keep them from being marred or letting psychic scents adhere to them.
Fears:
  • 1 - Losing herself. This time of personal darkness scares Naamah because she could easily see how she could fall into a cycle of hatred and suffering. But the grief, anger, and pain just grip her so tightly sometimes that she can’t control herself.
  • 2 - Enclosed spaces. Naamah is claustrophobic. Small spaces where she can’t move, can’t pass through, can’t defend herself -- those spaces can cause her to hyperventilate on the verge of panic. Caves are not her favorite places at all.
  • 3 - Loving and losing again. Naamah loved Suraj deeply and losing him shattered her heart. She knows that this too shall pass and that she will stitch herself back together (hopefully) but what if it happens again? What it if she loses another mate, or, even worse, her daughters?
Craft Strengths:
  • 1 - Passing through objects. This aids Naamah greatly while Healing, especially for complex injuries. She has great spatial awareness of herself and knows which areas to pass and which to solidify. She’s never had a problem separating herself from an object. This skill can also make her fairly deadly in combat, since it allows her to strike hard in close quarters.
  • 2 - Bone shaping. Naamah excels in setting and mending bones, especially in children, whose bones are still very porous and need a delicate touch so as not to affect growth later on. But the flip side to this skill is that she knows how to shape bones unnaturally, an option that she has never though to explore before the sandworms attacked.
Craft Weaknesses:
  • 1 - Death spells. While Naamah has no problem finishing off an enemy, there is a certain timing and patience aspect to death spells that Naamah still can’t quite grasp, even after training in some of them. She blames the impromptu side of her nature for getting in the mental block way.
  • 2 - Healing tonics. Naamah barely passed all of her lessons in this area of Healing because of a problem remembering ratios, potencies, and contraindications. She prefers to let someone else in the Tair clan brew the tonics, especially the more intricate ones.
Life Story

Family:
Mother: Nareen, Rose to Purple Dusk witch (age 57, born 137 AP)
Father: Isman, Yellow to Rose Warlord (age 60, born 134 AP)
Siblings: Jaleh, Yellow to Summer Sky witch (age 35, born 159 AP); Amarrah, Tiger Eye to Purple Dusk Black Widow (age 30, born 164 AP)
Spouse: Suraj al-Kalurops, Tiger Eye to Summer Sky Prince (deceased at age 33 in 193)
Children: twin girls Haleh and Hadassah (age 7, born 187 AP)

History:

Naamah’s father was not disappointed that he was gifted with three daughters and no sons. No, he was delighted and he applied the knowledge of a warrior into each of his daughters to varying degrees. Before Naamah learned how to Heal, she knew how to fight. She had a ferocity to her, driven by her need to compete with her equally ambitious sister Amarrah, that sometimes worried Isman, but that ferocity would become tempered in time, beginning a few years after Naamah received her Birthright Tiger Eye.

The decision to become a Healer was not something Naamah initially embraced. She wanted to fight more than heal and it took many years for her to understand this “balance” thing that her father had always stressed. Training in the Healer Caste was something her parents thought would help her achieve this, so, in her late teenage years, she began. She would still struggle with it in a work-related sense as she aged but at least emotionally she learned how to temper her feelings and not let them affect her actions so much.

Naamah attributes the last great event that taught her to temper her emotions as her Virgin Night. She grew greatly attached to the man who had seen her through it but one night together naked could not sustain a relationship during the daylight hours and Naamah later learned how destructive that sort of emotional dependence had been on her and others. Her Offering gifted her with a Summer Sky and she knew what path next to take in her life.

She finished her Healer training and embraced the duality of being both defender of her people and healer of wounds. She was her own double-edged sword in a way, merciful and merciless, depending on what was needed. Meeting Suraj al-Kalurops was a delight to her warrior side, since the Kalurops were fierce fighters. Suraj was equally a passionate lover. He supported Naamah in her studies but also reminded her to care for herself. He balanced her like no other and they were married by the time she was twenty-three.

Three years later, their twins, Haleh and Hadassah, were born.

It wasn’t until her daughters were born that Naamah began to appreciate her Healer skills, having to constantly mend little lacerations and bruises. It gave her motherly worry an outlet and she gained more empathy when treating other women’s children. Naamah greatly wished for a son for Suraj, even though he, like her father, was delighted to teach their young daughters the ways of the warriors, but Naamah miscarried their next two children. Suraj urged her not to worry or stress herself -- she was young and they had time -- so their lovemaking became less about procreating and more about the pleasure that had drawn them together in the first place, while they raised their daughters. When Naamah was twenty-seven, she accepted the position of Court Healer of the Tair tribe, cementing a long-standing friendship with the Queen of the Tair, Sirrah, and beginning a new chapter in her life.

Those six years after the birth of her twins, despite the heartaches of miscarriage, had been utter bliss. And were destroyed the day the worms attacked Tuono.

Character in Play:
Suraj was late in returning.

Normally, such a thing would not concern Naamah. She was not the type of woman to cling insecurely to her husband and afforded him the same amount of freedom as he granted her. She loved that about him, that he knew how to ebb and flow around her, but never, ever clipping her proverbial wings. She had plenty to do, with young twin girls, and thus was neither bored nor lonely. So the hours flew by without a thought, until Naamah realized that her husband had been delayed almost a day.

And then that day turned into night. And with the night came the cataclysm.

A lone rider came into the Tair Court camp, where Naamah had called home for the last five years. He immediately yelled for the Queen, his voice piercing and panicked. As Healer, Naamah had already started in his direction, accustomed to such situations almost always requiring her skills later. She dusted her hands clean as she strode towards the firelight. The gathering crowd whispered fearfully but Naamah did not fear.

Not yet.

Sirrah al-Tair, Queen of the Tair, strode forward, equally as calm as Naamah. The two women were a pair alike, and Naamah was very glad she had accepted this position as Court Healer. The Tair traveled more than other tribes and it had pleased Suraj to take a position as guard within the tribe. A few days ago, he had left with a group of their tribe to visit Tuono, updating the maps harbored at the sandrider city.

Naamah figured that the rider had found someone in the desert who needed assistance or was bringing word of sandworms nearby. She believed both of those options wholly even as she reached the center of the ring gathered around him. And it wasn’t until Sirrah, her Queen, turned her head to find Naamah in the crowd, her expression breaking the moment she recognized her friend, did Naamah realize that it was something far, far worse.

Sirrah’s mouth formed the words but Naamah’s ears had already closed them off. She had seen that same look, delivered by her own face, when there was nothing that could be done for someone. But it could not be. No, not with her husband. Her mind, falling into disbelief and panic, reached out for Suraj with a scream.

And found nothing.

In that one slicing moment, she heard what her friend and Queen had been trying to tell her, over and over again, at first so very softly and now with tears in her eyes. Gone. He was gone. Gone, gone, gone, just like that. A snap of the fingers, a snap of the jaws. Gone. Naamah’s world blurred, then tumbled. Her friend and Queen held the pieces of her together when she tried to bury herself in the sand. Gone. Gone where she could not follow.

“We will sing his name to the stars and draw drop after drop of our vengeance from their hides,” Sirrah whispered mournfully in her deafened ears. Did sandworms know of pain, of revenge? Did they relish in the misery they caused? Did they, did they, did they? Gone, gone, gone. Spiralling down, down, down into the Darkness, catching stars with their tails. Catching...catching…

Gone.
