Distinguishing Features:

Personality

Personality:
Eskandar is a man slow to speak, because he likes to carefully consider his words and the purpose behind them first. Thus, he comes off as reserved and quiet, traits that aggressive people see as weak. The only thing he is shy about is women, particularly the love of his life, so it should be known that Eskandar is not shy about voicing his opinion or stating the facts -- he simply takes his time in doing so. He’s a thinker, often taking hours to come to a decision rather than solely trusting his gut, and he is a collector of information, all sorts of information. Thus, Eskandar spends a lot of time in his own head.

He’s well versed in Protocol and very polite towards those in authority or elders. With those nearer to his age, he is more comfortable, showing off a boyishly charming smile and letting his language slide a little. He’s got a pretty big heart, which can get him hurt sometimes, but overall, most people consider him steady and trustworthy, the kind of guy they would like doing business with or having over for dinner.

Faults? Yes, he has them, although if you ask him that question, he’ll think he has way too many. He can be fairly self-deprecating at times, which some people think is odd because he knows he’s overall a good guy. Most of his weaknesses stem from either women or conflict. He tends to be oblivious to flirting, or just too shy to act upon it when it happens, and might shut down emotionally for a bit if change is sprung upon him. He’s one to verbally intervene if a fight develops but physical fighting still scares him a bit. Aggressive people he generally just avoids if he can. He’s too soft spoken to overcome them and the fact that he tends to lack the visibly confident aura that his twin possesses bothers him sometimes.

Likes:
  • 1 - Horses. This was how he met Simin when they were children and ever since then, he has loved being astride a horse or working with them. He can tell you the pros and cons of each breed, the history of it, etc.
  • 2 - History. Bookworm, bookworm, is what the kids called him. Being a Prince, studying came naturally, and Eskandar found there was so much to learn from history, even things that were applicable today! This used to be a dirty secret, since his father hated having such a bookish son, but now that Eskandar is on his own, he looks forward to evenings spent reading.
  • 3 - Exploring. One of the few things he has in common with his twin (there are others, just not as obvious) is a love for exploring things -- caves, ruins, new places, they appeal to Eskandar because of the history they offer and the interesting things to be found.
Dislikes:
  • 1 - Physical fighting. Eskandar subscribes to a “can’t we all just get along” mentality a lot of times, even though he’s loathe to voice it. He’s not a hardcore pacifist but if people were nice to others, there’d be less fighting, and he thinks that would solve a lot of problems overall.
  • 2 - His father. Husain was not a good husband and Eskandar remembers that. Now, he sees that his father is a good businessman but still not a good person, so Eskandar tries to take the opposite approach in the same situation, since he doesn’t want to become his father.
  • 3 - Seedy or illegal things like gambling, caravan raiding, or Red Moon houses. Eskandar knew these things were outlets to fuel his father’s misogynistic and cutthroat ways and steers clear of them. He wants to build a life out of more honorable pursuits.
Fears:
  • 1 - Simin never loving him back. Ever since they were kids, Eskandar always saw a life, a family with Simin. The notion that she might build that sort of thing with another man scares him because he’s always, ALWAYS been in love with her and he has built his entire world around that dream.
  • 2 - Bashir hating him. There’s a lot of resentment coming towards Eskandar from Bashir, mostly stemming from the fact that Eskandar looks like he has it all together. Eskandar is afraid that Bashir secretly hates him and does just about anything to care for his twin.
  • 3 - Losing someone he loves to depression/suicide. The circumstances around his mother’s death are shady. Eskandar is fairly certain she took her own life but no one will talk to him about it so now he lives with this fear of one day, someone else he loves will just disappear from his life without warning and he could have stopped it.
Craft Strengths:
  • 1 - Diplomacy. This strength started young within Eskandar, since his father was a businessman bent on teaching his sons how to survive in a cutthroat mercantile world, but it truly became a Craft strength in his teenage years, when Eskandar began applying a little research about history and current events towards his meetings with other people. This has allowed Eskandar to develop contacts in all of the major clans of Pruul, as well as resources not usually available to someone so young.
  • 2 - Preservation spells. Pruul’s arid climate lends keeping manuscripts and books intact but sand gets into everything so Eskandar has learned how to weave anti-sand lining into these spells.
Craft Weaknesses:
  • 1 - Compulsion Craft. Eskandar remembered being physically ill the first time his father made him use it on someone and he wasn’t even the one who made the spell! He was just the messenger! Ever since then, it makes Eskandar shudder or pale to think about this sort of Craft.
  • 2 - Exploiting weakness. As a strength of his father, Eskandar avowed never to use this Craft ability, because he didn’t believe in abusing others that way. If people wanted to do business with him, he wanted them to come to it of their own volition and not because he roped them into it unwillingly.
Life Story

Family:
Mother: Elise/”Safiyah” (last name unknown) , Blood female, deceased at age 32
Father: Husain al-Sabbah, Purple Dusk to Green Prince (age 52, born 142 AP)
Siblings: twin brother Bashir al-Sabbah, Tiger Eye to Summer Sky Warlord (deceased at age 26, born 167 AP, died 193);
sister Malika, Summer Sky to Opal witch (age 24, born 170 AP)
Stepmother: Nadira al-Sabbah, Yellow descent witch (age 44, born 150 AP)
Half-siblings: brother Nasir, Yellow to Tiger Eye Warlord (age 12, born 182 AP) ; sister Rasima (age 7, born 187 AP), Yellow to Rose witch

History:
For all of the seeming happiness and success now, early life in the twins’ household was not a pleasant one.

Their mother came to Pruul by choice but did not come into Husain’s household by the same willingness. She had been part of a caravan, traders from Chaillot, that had been betrayed and pillaged, the women taken for exotic spoils, the goods split amongst the raiders. She was a wife in title only. With her Chaillot husband killed, Elise (whose named was changed to Safiyah) became the wife of Husain, and it was little better than slavery.

Eskandar was the eldest of her three children and remembers this time as always having to watch out for his siblings and helping her with the endless stream of chores that Husain piled upon her. When their father left bruises on her, Eskandar cared for her. He grew to resent his father early on and vowed never to be that sort of man to a woman.

Husain was a man of business, a man always looking for ways to increase his wealth and status. Eskandar learned the ways of trade but did not take to it with the same cutthroat attitude that his father had. His Rose Birthright was not the starting Jewel his father hoped for but his mother adored it and that smoothed over a lot of the doubts in young Eskandar.

He remembers the day when his mother died as the day that he grew up, even though he was ten.

It might have been suicide. It might not. In the months, years that came next, Eskandar learned how callous and selfish people could be. His father dismissed his mother’s death with hardly a sigh of grief and remarried when the twins were thirteen. Bashir, Eskandar’s twin, revolted constantly and it fell to Eskandar to play diplomat and try to keep the peace, at least until the twins reached their majority. While Bashir strode into his Offering defiant and assured, Eskandar walked in with a heart full of prayers and hope. He walked out clutching a Purple Dusk Jewel, knowing fully that his mother would have been proud, even as his father sighed in soft disappointment.

The only shining moment that came out of this incredibly rough decade of his life happened when he was thirteen. Still too much of a boy, he met his love and his Queen while his father was looking for a bargain on horses from the Jinan. That day, going from horse to horse with a little six year old girl, was the best day of his life, even when the adults balked at their age difference. Eskandar still smiles when he remembers the moment where Simi, barely past a horse’s knee, declared to all of the adults that he was her friend and would always be her friend.

He didn’t know what it was then. But as the years went on and he heard of adults talking about Bonding to a Queen, Eskandar was convinced that he had encountered the same thing. Once he was old enough, he would find her again. That promise he made to her in haste as a child became something he built his world around.

So, Eskandar worked. And worked hard. From that day forward to his Offering and beyond. He learned how to make connections, how to draw in business, how to make friends everywhere. Most of his hard work went to lining Husain’s pockets, which kept him quiet and happy. There was plenty to go around and Husain’s new wife enjoyed the luxury that came in. Eskandar smartly kept a portion of his business out of his father’s hands and by the time he was in his mid-twenties, he had enough to make his move. He passed his Trials of Manhood, with the Trial of Strength giving him the most difficulty, and descended into the Purple Dusk dawn of his next journey.

He waited for his sister to make her Offering and then the three of them disappeared to make their new life elsewhere, leaving behind the Sabbah camp and joining up with the next clan caravan out anywhere. Eskandar planned on taking care of his siblings somehow -- he had plenty of money to get them started -- but his biggest focus now was finding his Queen. She had to be old enough to make her Offering now and set up her Court and he planned to be a part of that. Somehow.

Character in Play:

In the Darkness, there was silence.

And that comforted Eskandar.

He had walked into this trial alone, even though his twin was nearby, undergoing the same event. Eskandar did not take comfort in that but rather, he prayed that his twin would be successful. Bashir had always been a lost soul, something that Eskandar was not. And that had always worried Eskandar.

They were bound, the two of them, no matter where life led them. And in the Darkness, Eskandar embraced that. He was not worried about his own success -- he knew where life wanted him to go. He only hoped that Bashir found the same sense of purpose that Eskandar had.

Simin. The thought of her brought Eskandar peace. After this was done, he would be on his way to her. As soon as everything else was ready.

Holding on to that peace, Eskandar descended, thinking about the Queen who was now grown up and ready for him to serve her, remembering his mother’s supportive and proud smile over his Birthright, and ignoring his father’s dismissive or cutting remarks. Once this was done, the final pieces of Eskandar’s plan would fall into place, and he would be done with his father. He would take his twin and his little sister and create a new, better life away from this place.

He would find his Queen and begin anew.

All he had to do was complete this Offering.

In the Darkness, there was conviction, the silent and sure belief that Eskandar was on the right path, that he would succeed. There was confidence in his heart and plenty of love and level headedness to match whatever arrogance sought to take hold. No matter what Jewel the Darkness judged him by, Eskandar would find a new life and create better days for his twin and sister. He would not be the slave his mother had been.

Mother, he thought, remembering her smile. She was here, in the Darkness, and that comforted him further.

When Eskandar opened his eyes, it was to a Purple Dusk twilight, the setting sun of one life that would bring the dawn of another. Exhaling as he steadied himself for what was to come, Eskandar rose and began the first step on his next journey.
