Personality

Personality:
As the day is long Danyal is patient, as the night is cool he is calm but as the storm blows and howels his fury knows no bounds. Pruulians have always exhibited a connection to the vast wasteland their ancestors have called home for thousands of years but none seem to exemplify this than those of the Sabbah (in Danyal’s opinion), and he is part of his Clan and Tribe to his core. Shifting sands trickle or cascade much like his personality, either coming out in slow doses leaving many to believe him a stoic individual only to be caught unaware when the dune shifts ,and floods them with emotion.

From the offset Danyal seems like the sandstone forming the region surrounding Onn; rough, abrasive and slow to change without force applied, but past his rougher exterior beats the raging sandstorm that the Hague have come to symbolize. Passions, rage and primal emotions swirl within his mind and soul where only the dense mask of indifference can weather the storm and keep him in check. He is a fierce warrior, taking preasure in every aspect of that craft and in leading others. He seems made for the role of Master of the Guard, commanding loyalty through leading by example. He is the first in the training yards every morning even now that he's turned gray and is always ready to lend a hand to anyone who wishes to improve their skill.

The waters of kindness and love have rooted themselves as an oasis within his soul found with Jameela, his first and only love. Though she is long gone, the lessons she taught him have never faded. Through the cracks of his sandstone-like facade the creeping roots of generosity and tenderness can be glimpsed for a moment before withdrawing back into the interior as the mask once more slides into place. He has no children but has taken many into his heart. He loves to hear the ideas and stories that the young tell, just as he likes to drink with the elders of the Tribe and recount tales of days gone by. Easygoing when off the battlefield, Danyal will always lend you a sympathetic ear as long as he deems you someone who is of sound moral fiber, or who has the potential to be.

Finding himself now within the service of Elenor al-Sabbah as her Master of the Guard he feels as though he is now the sand within the hourglass; turned over and over again inside of a finely crafted prison of time. While he respects and has accepted his position within her court the desert still calls to his soul and he longs to once more embrace the scouring winds and burn of the unforgiving sun… He serves because he believes she is the Queen the Sabbah need. Not his Queen, perhaps, but a good Queen. He takes his oaths seriously and intends to be part of the storm that washes the Sabbah clean of the taint of Adramelech. Still, she worries him. He believes her to be good, but deeply flawed, and moving at a pace that is faster than he is comfortable with. Like a youth rushing ahead without stopping to think, he has to race after, hoping to be the voice of reason in her Court.

Likes:
  • Family: Where the Sabbah value family ties and traditions Danyal has fully embraced it, they are the water to his oasis and what keeps his kinder nature thriving. Since losing his wife, his focus has been on his chosen family. He likes seeing children grow, feeling the joy of a brother's accomplishment and sitting with the elderly as they live out their last days.
  • Arak: Little joy is to be found in the hostile dunes of the ever roaming desert save for a few, Arak has always been one of those simple joys for Danyal . Drunk around the evening fire exchanging stories or in the taverns of Onn there are few occasions where he will turn down a drink. He does not drink to excess, but he likes the social aspect of drinking with friends.
  • Fighting: Throughout the history of the Hague they have always been a fierce and martial people. Danyal enjoys every part of the fight. He loves the rigors and discipline of training, the thrill of combat and the victory drinks after a good bout! He doesn't like actual war, but only for the toll in lives. The actual act of fighting is something that brings him joy.
Dislikes:
  • Lazy Fighters: To fight is to commit with one’s whole soul to winning. Anyone who does less earns Danyal’s disdain. He will take a dedicated but unskilled fighter over a lazy but naturally talented one any day.
  • Solitude: Danyal is a people-person. He lives for his Tribe and his Clan and being alone is something that bothers him. It makes him antsy and nervous and he will do anything necessary to get back to a group or even a single traveling companion.
  • His queen’s attitude to personal danger: SHE DID WHAT?! Danyal appreciates many things about Elenor, but her disregard for safety is not one of them. If anything could drive a wedge between them, it is her standing in the way of his job.
Fears:
  • The Fall of Tribe Hague: For all their faults the Hague have always survived, living on the fringe of the Sabbah for some time now. Danyal fears the day they can no longer we welcomed around the tribal fires of the Sabbah and will once more be cast out into the unforgiving wastes, or that they will whittle away to nothing and his people will simply disappear. He has seen their numbers fall over his lifetime and it makes him worry that in a few more generations they will be gone and not even in a blaze of glory.
  • Foreign Influence: Yes, it seems strange considering he serves a foreign-born Queen, but Lady Sabbah passed her Trials and is Sabbah. What he fears is that she has not truly embraced that new identity and that her ideas are far too influenced by her upbringing. He worries that she will try to change too much, too fast and that she is not respecting the traditions that have made the Sabbah strong. Not to mention the fear that this will cause a civil war which will have a high cost in lives.
  • Age: With only a few decades left to his life Danyal has started to feel the aches of his time, the grey hairs and the stiffness of his joints. Soon his time to take the lone walk into the desert will come and he dreads he will take too long in recognizing his time to pass on, becoming a burden to his Tribe. He also just fears that day because while he knows he could die in the glory of combat, dying in ignominy scares him very much, given that he has no children to carry on his memory.
Craft Strengths:
  • Calming Rage: Life in the desert is difficult enough without the Blood and their impulses. Throw a raging Warlord Prince into the mix and is could spell disaster. Learning to calm such individuals down is a skill Danyal has found himself needing to rely upon more often since coming into Elenor’s Court. He is always the calm within the storm.
  • Telekinesis (Pinpoint Source): Where one would use craft to lift a boulder on all sides to their will and desire, Danyal has developed the skill to push a single point. By selecting the point of power he can accelerate, break or control the velocity of an object with far greater results.
Craft Weaknesses:
  • Large Shields: Danyal can manage a personal shield around himself or someone he is touching, but cannot make a big one around a location or group. This leaves him at a diseadvantage as a Master of the Guard because while he can protect his Queen, it leaves her Court defensless.
  • Psychic Sensing: To Danyal, others are a mystery. He has to use his eyes and ears, not Craft, to sense what they are feeling, or even their Caste unless right under his nose. This is a disadvantage in combat as well as in life, since having that sense could help him anticipate his opponent’s actions, but he has just had to learn to live with it. To pick up on a psychic scent he has to be very close to someone and really concentrate.
Life Story

Family:
Mother: Dana al-Hague, Purple Dusk - Green witch
FatherHaidar al-Hague, Tiger Eye - Purple Dusk Warlord
Brother: Iman al-Hague, Yellow - Summer Sky Warlord 50 (b. 143AP)
Wife: Jameela al-Hague, Rose - Opal witch
Best Friend: Nasser al-Hague, Purple Dusk - Opal Prince, 58 (b. 135AP)

History:
Danyals young life was unremarkable. He grew and studied like any member or Tribe Hague would until his Birthright, when his Blood Opal Jewel set him apart from many of his peers for it’s dark potential. From that day on he was given if not special, then at least additional consideration in his training. By the time he was in his teens his lessons and the sense of discipline and responsibility they had imparted had turned him into a solemn and dependable boy. When he took his Trials at nineteen, he was already one of the most skilled fighters of his generation, and that prowess would only grow. Danyal’s specialty was close, hand to hand combat, getting inside his enemy’s defenses and using a mixture of muscle and pinpoint telekinesis to defeat his opponents in as little time as he could.

His Offering came shortly after his Trials and he came away with the Red. This wasn’t a surprise to anyone, for when Danyal put his mind to something he tended to succeed. It wasn’t any innate skill or cleverness that brought about these positive results, merely hard work and a dogged determination not to let the world stop him.

He spent his twenties serving in the Court of the Hague Queen as a Second Circle Guard, then in the First, and finally rising to the coveted position of Master of the Guard at thirty. By then he had married and while his wife and he never had children, he always took an interest in those newly adopted into the Tribe and took to heart the ‘it takes a village to raise a child’ mentality, becoming an honorary uncle to all his friend’s kids.

The Queen he was serving was old even before he entered into her service, and not three years after joining her Triangle she returned to the Darkness. Another mature Queen was found to rule after a time, but Danyal decided to leave Court life to instead focus on his wife, who had been diagnosed with a slow but fatal condition. He cared for her in her last years and when at last she was no longer able to keep up with the nomadic ways of the desert, he supported her decision to offer her water back to the Tribe.

His grief after his wife’s death was long to let go of his heart, but time heals all wounds and in the course of enough of it Danyal returned to his usual self if a little more quiet and reserved and slightly less prone to a quick smile.

He had never dreamed of serving in a Court again and only went to the Trials of the new Queen of the Sabbah because he was in Onn on business. Elenor al-Sabbah was not his Queen, but her message ran true, and as was the way of the Hague, if one could fight and pass one’s Trials, then that person belonged to Pruul. He offered to serve because it was the right thing to do and accepted a place as her Master of the Guard with surprise but pleasure. As he got to know her, that pleasure turned to respect and annoyance, for the blasted woman seemed intent on getting herself killed. Still, she was a good Queen and one worth serving, and Danyal found comradery in his brother of the Court. His anger at the faction calling themselves the True Sabbah rose as they continued to make his life difficult and his worry for the Hague grew alongside it. His Tribe was small in numbers and their Queen was once again ancient, except this time there was no replacement in sight.

Even as he serves Lady al-Sabbah, Danyal has to consider if long-term he should, or if it would be better to return to his Tribe and try to help them weather the storm of losing their only living Queen.

Character in Play:

Danyal rubbed the bridge of his nose as he stared at the latest disaster that had popped up on his pile of paperwork. He was not a man well-suited for paperwork. A fight was so much cleaner than the doldrums of this monstrosity called the bureaucracy of Clan Sabbah. Alas, as Master of the Guard, there was paperwork to be done, and this piece in front of him was even more important than usual.

When Lady Sabbah had first said that she planned on going on a road trip around the whole of the blasted Realm, Danyal had thought she must be joking. She couldn't even go to the market without getting mobbed in the streets, what made the fool of a young woman think that Territories where Danyal didn't even know the customs were places he could keep her safe in? But Elenor had insisted, so here Danyal was, filling out requests to be able to bring armed escorts into half a dozen Territories. Why did Pruul have to border so many? His job would be so much easier if it were just one or two. Maybe he should pick a second from among the First or Second Circles, someone he could assign this sort of job while he set up the logistics of actually keeping the foolhardy female safe during this ill-advised escapade.

Danyal stretched, his aging joints protesting the motion and having to hunch over a desk. At least they would be in motion soon, traveling like a Court of Pruul shoudl instead of being stuck in Onn with all the people who wanted to harm the person he had sworn to serve. Not for the first time, Danyal was grateful he had not bonded to Lady Sabbah like so many had. She already gave him near-heartattacks on the regular. How much worse would it be if she held part of Danyal's soul? His wife was the only person who could claim that honor, and it probabaly made him better at his job for it to be this was. He had no innate need to obey, which meant he could drag the Queen kicking and screaming out of danger if need be.

If he coudl see her.

Maybe he woudl ask Prince Matin to teach him that trick that Warlord Princes had with marking people. That seemed useful and a better use of his time than struggling onward with this paperwork, not with a headache coming on. Yes, that sounded good, and while he was at it he would check how the Prince was doing. Danyal worried about that boy.
