Distinguishing Features

Tension lingers in his sharp, hawklike eyes. Crows feet and smile lines shape his lean face. Sudden, intense smile. Deep brown hair, neatly kept; clean shaven. A scar streaks along his right ear, ragged scars cover his body. Baritone Voice. An accomplished warrior, with court-trained dexterity and skill.

Personality

Personality:

Babak al'Tabur is a man of deep, hidden passions and ineradicable truths. For him the world is not a murky place of maybe or perhaps, but has been seared down to simple matters of what is, and what is not, within his power to control. He has a deep core of bitterness, though that is often obscured by his ability to embrace joy when it comes to him.

His face bespeaks his strong will, with a jutting chin and hawklike-eyes, and his full, deep baritone voice is well suited to teaching or leading, both of which he handles competently. He does not yell, either in anger or crisis, although his lean features and the scar on his face can give him a faintly menacing air. He favors the classical grab and weaponry of Pruul, as if he feels that if he keeps their traditions in small ways somehow the larger traditions will fall into place once more as well. For this reason, rather than overt threat, he always wears his Khanjar.

He is a deeply devoted family man, putting the welfare of his family above his own needs and wishes without hesitation. While an admirable quality on its own, his own family has been twice betrayed by the leadership of Pruul, which makes him a weapon poised at the throat of his own Clan. He values loyalty and steadfast courage more than any other traits, and he has seen very little of that in those who have ruled Pruul for the burdensome years of his life.

Babak truly loves Pruul, and he believes that the desert purifies. He believes less in prophecies of any one group bringing back the rains, than that the rains will return in their own time. For either there is a spell in place to withhold them, or it is Mother Night's will that Pruul be so tried. Either way, the best way to survive to is to let the Desert set the rhythms of yours life, rather than trying to force the desert (or fate) into conceding to your will.

He raises his one surviving child according to this principle, not trying to force Kurush to live the life Babak desired, but the one Kurush needs in order to grow straight and strong.

Likes:
  • 1 Fine Wine. Babak loves a good, high quality wine and liqueurs. Given the opportunity he would be a fine sommelier; in fact, his family once protected the hidden plants and secret vaults where the native drink was grown and stored. Decades ago the soil dried up and blew away, but the tradition lingers in his family.
  • 2 Reading. He is surprisingly well educated, less from formal classes or tutors than a keen intellect and true delight in reading, weather it be silly romances, children stories or more serious works.
  • 3 Loyalty. He has a firm code of honor, and the foundation of that is loyalty. It is his great belief in truth and loyalty that has led to his conflicting issues with the Clan of his birth.

    Dislikes:
  • 1 Hatred. It is not that Babak lives a passionless life; but he has seen and felt how hate can warp a soul and distort good judgement. So he both resists the emotion in himself and despises when he sees it control another.
  • 2 Prejudice. Good or bad, each person should be evaluated for who they are, not their caste, family, tribe or race.
  • 3 Slavery. Until he met Hadjara, slavery was just part of life in the desert. Seeing Hadjara's grace and strength in surviving such a brutal beginning, and witnessing the trauma of the Mineborn, has made him realize that the Blood are too violent and hate filled to be granted such power over each other.

    Fears:
  • 1 Loosing Hadjara or Kurush. He has lost everyone else. For all he feigns to be calm about loosing his son to the Temple, there is an aching fear in his heart that Kurush feels the call of the Darkness, because Mother Night is going to Call Kurush home to her. Hadjara has healed his heart, just through her courage and compassion, yet he honestly feels she is too good for the world, and fears constantly that the world will devour her.
  • 2 Betraying his family. As much as he loves Pruul, he fears it. It is a brutal and difficult land, best navigated by someone properly protected by a tribe. Is he betraying Kurush by seeking to tie their little, broken family to Hadjara? Is he betraying HER by encouraging her to love him when a powerful marriage alliance to a properly strong Clan might protect her and all her Minesibs?
  • 3 The Price. He cannot quite see how to both pay the necessary Price for Kurush, and for Hadjara. Kurush's steadfast calling to be a Priest may force Babak to swear loyalty once more to the Clan of his birth; a Clan that has been extremely hesitant to indicate any support for  the Mineborn. Wedding Hadjara as he so ardently desires would mean giving up his Clan, to join her tony, token band.

    Craft Strengths:
  • 1 Psychic Senses. As opposed to being able to discern minutiae from a Psychic Scent, or detect hidden Castes, Babak has a gift of being able to passively sense activity and presences at a vastly greater distance than most Blood. Occasionally, a synergy between his danger sense and psychic sense can allow him to spot craft-hidden individuals; it is not a precise locating, such as to permit a blow, but a shimmer like a heat mirage, giving him an area.
  • 2 Danger Sense. Living on the edge for so long, in a land slowly dying, Babak's instincts are highly trained. He cannot quantify what it is that signals a portentous meeting or risky event, but he believes that the desert itself whispers to his soul of approaching death. And that the moment of his death will be defined by the lack of that extra moment's warning, as the Mother Night chooses at last to have him become part of the land he has guarded all of his life.

    Craft Weaknesses:
  • 1 Spatial Craft. He's from Pruul; to his mind long distance communication could kill the person you are reaching (sandworms), Scrying is for the sayyadina, Tracking Craft will get you killed in the desert, and until his son decided to be a Priest, he never had any need to travel to either border of Pruul. He never even explored this aspect of Craft, a combination of it not being useful and the traditions of his family.
  • 2 Mind Craft. He feels that Mind Delving, Compulsions, and Breaking Barriers are the province of Queens and the Sayyadina. Deception and Emotional manipulation are so foreign to the traditional culture of Pruul that Babak has refused all instruction in this area. He would destroy a collar, and Mediation Craft is for Princes and Queens. He can sometimes achieve actively reading another's emotions, but he finds it intrusive. Everyone has their secrets. He must pay a high energy cost and he is poor at it, for he is fighting himself.

    History:

Babak was born to a well-to-do family in the Tabur Clan, one whose ancestors had made the spicy, desert wine unique to Pruul before the Great War, before the water changed and the people swore they loyalty to Pruul and Clan before all else. As the fruit they used became more rare, his family began to focus more and more on warfare, but they never lost their love of fine wines and liqueurs. They drew closer and closer to the Courts, following the nomadic ways of Pruul.

So Babak grew up in the nomadic Courts of his Clan, and by the time of his birthright, his keen mind and discrete manner had made him a favorite at any Court. Though a desert tribesman by inclination, he spent nearly half of his teen years in one court or another, serving the interests of his Clan. At his Offering, his Opal meant his service was almost entirely with the Court itself. He was carefully trained to the different needs and customs when Escorting those of different Castes.

Babak fell in love with Farshid, a weaver who spent most of her time in Shidah, a Clan hold in the mountains, hidden away for her skill not only in weaving the precious and utterly necessary cloth that protects and enriches the Clan, but in making the looms. Shidah still had a tiny bit of water, a few trees for wood, and a deep, slow well hidden in the desert. Farshid bore him two beautiful children. The Clan rejoiced in the birth of his daughter, Afari, a precious Priestess. She was not taken immediately to the Peaceful Place, but allowed to stay with her family until her Birthright Ceremony.

The family was gathered at Shidah for Afari's Birthright Ceremony, but Babak was called away to an emergency at Court. He and his brother fought a brutal battle over a dried up well in the desert. Babak returned to Shidah only to find the small community devastated, bodies left to rot in the sun. The attackers had failed to find the hidden well, but had smashed or stolen all of the looms and cloth. He followed a faint scent to find his son, seizing convulsively, clinging to the dead body of his sister. The little Priestess had taken a wound, and bled out, her tiny, brand new Jewel already shattered in its setting. He never even knew what Jewel she had been blessed with. Everyone who knew was dead, and Kurush has no memory of the day.

Kurush was bait in a trap, and Babak found himself surrounded by those who had slain his kin. He tricked them into following him into the desert, and sacrificed his depleted Opal to summon Sandworms and drive them into a frenzy. He hid himself and his son in the deep, stony well, and the desert avenged his family. He and Kurush lived, but neither one was whole.

For Afari had touched Kurush's mind, seeking to calm him as she lay dying. Kurush seemed to desire to follow her down into death, seeking after his sister. When Babak brought his son to the Clan no one could Heal him; Priestess, Healer and Black-widow all reported him damaged. Babak was encouraged to surrender Kurush to the desert, and return to the tribe. But Babak would not do so.

The boy was lost, certain memories or Jewel strengths triggering such powerful associations that his spirit would seek out the Darkness he was not born to touch, as he looked for his sister. His Clan would not pay for specialized Healing, would not even grant Babak death geld for the loss of his kin until he returned to the fold, and sacrificed the welfare of his son. Instead, the Broken Warlord walked the length and breadth of the desert, seeking help.

Eventually, he found Lady Kesare Fuentes. Babak served as her Escort for a year, and she put his son's mind back together, eased the trauma and Healed the damage to his brain. She even took Kurush to the High Priestess of all Dhemlan. The High Priestess' gentle expertise permitted Kurush to survive his Birthright Ceremony with his Jewel intact. Kurush, however, is forever changed, filled with an endless fascination with and longing for the Darkness. He has asked to be trained as a Priest, despite the unease the notion of a male Priest provokes in most of Pruul.

During his service, Babak met and fell in love with Hadjara al'Izar. She has agreed to be his betrothed, and Lady Kesare permitted him to end his contract early, and take up service with his Chosen lady.

    Character in Play:

    Prelude.

Babak al'Tabur stood deep in the Abyss, but his uncut Opal would not be enough, not this time. His powerful, battle-hardened hands held tightly to his unconscious, barely breathing son. The body of his daughter lay at his feet, her shattered jewel in her hand. Her other hand had been wrapped around her baby brother, and Babak had had to break her tiny arm to free his son. For that indignity alone, he could not permit a single male here to survive.

He stared down leader of the bandits who had both slain his family, trying to discern who he truly represent. If he ever found out which Tribe it was, he'd hunt them all down. These men had slain his family, and used his only surviving son as a trap. They wanted water? He would give them water. They would drown in it. An idea slowly formed in his mind.

"I will take you to water. But you will not live to enjoy it."

They sneered; they took it as bravado.

Purpose burned like acid in his gut, but he was no Prince or Warlord-Prince; it was not rage, not truly. It was something beyond anger. Beyond sanity. It was purpose and drive with no softening of recognizable emotion or ability to count the cost of his actions. He did not care that he would be destroying an ancient, holy site. He did not measure the amount of carefully hoarded water that would be lost to the desert.

Not even his own Price mattered.
