Distinguishing Features:
Personality

Personality:
In many ways, Vihaan embodies the phrase “still waters run deep”. He is a deeply passionate man who has nonetheless learned to listen before speaking, and to watch before acting. Outwardly he comes across as an affable fellow, quick to smile and easy to pry a twinkle of humor from. Even so, he is more reserved than outgoing. Though it would not be accurate to say he is antisocial, he has learned the benefit of consciously choosing where to spend his social energy and where to hold it in reserve. When motivated, he can be quite charming and warm, though unless it’s in the company of someone he truly enjoys, it taxes him to be so.

Vihaan’s family is very important to him. He feels that those bonds were given to him by the Darkness, each one for a specific purpose, and he cherishes them. He is an intensely spiritual person overall, though not everyone he associates with knows this about him. He has no trouble speaking of his faith, but it is a personal matter that he will not squander on those he feels are not truly interested in hearing. He sees himself as very perceptive, and to some degree his is. However, he sometimes falls into the trap of drawing conclusions that are inaccurate because of blanks he’s filled in on his own without realizing it. Though he works hard to keep himself free of the biases and prejudices he’s grown up with, he is not always one hundred percent effective.

He is more an intellectual than a brute, far preferring to logic out a problem before opting for raw force. When violence is the best answer he has no problems with applying it, but it is rarely the recourse he reaches for first. He is well-read, and though he has no artistic talent of his own to speak of, sharing a household with Jabin for so many years has taught him to appreciate artistic endeavors more than most. He enjoys passion and all the expressions thereof, from dance to music to sex to singing to visual arts. Life is short and tomorrow is not promised; Vihaan believes in taking what pleasures are available now and enjoying them in hearty measure when one can. Existing in this world, he believes, is about experiencing as much of life as one possibly can for the sake of refining and enriching one’s soul to bring it closer to eventual oneness with the Darkness.

Likes:
  • Landen Rebels. The sheer courage it takes for someone in a world of Craft users to stand up and make demands is staggering. Vihaan cannot help but respect the fierceness of the passion and bravery that he finds in those Landen with whom he works. They are facing impossible odds and are yet undaunted. He admires them greatly.
  • Solving puzzles. Vihaan has always enjoyed being able to assess a situation, discern the missing pieces, and then find something to fit the needs he sees. He began practicing this skill at a young age, when he’d encounter an item he desired but lacked the funds to buy it. He would study the owner until he came up with an idea for a trinket or favor or something else aside from money that he could acquire in order to trade with the owner for the item he wanted.
  • Healing. With no money for proper Craft schooling, Vihaan had to search out his own learning where much of his Craft was concerned in his younger years. One of his childhood friends was a Healer named Neela, who taught him how to heal simple wounds in exchange for some tchotchke of his that she wanted. Vihaan was surprised to learn the extent to which a non-Healer could heal things, given the proper lessons, and found that he enjoyed the practice immensely. It means a great deal to him to be able to repair something so meaningful in a world that seems ever-more full of violence and hardship.

Dislikes:
  • Discrimination. On the one hand, Vihaan was guilty of this himself for a long time. He grew up in a Blood household, and despite the friendships he established with the Landen in the village nearest his own, he always saw himself and the rest of the Blood as superior creatures meant to take care of the Landen. It was not a thought he expressed or even consciously thought much about at all, but the bias was there. Now, his eyes have been opened to the dangers of comparing one person to another based on race or nationality or Jewels. He works very hard to consistently measure people based on what he observes from them, rather than what cultural biases might tell him. It bothers him greatly to see others dismissed for such reasons, as he feels this weakness is responsible for much of Nharkava’s strife.
  • Violent activists. It isn’t that Vihaan wouldn’t fight if he needed to; he is still Blood and violence will always be a part of him to some degree. However, in the work to subvert Glacia’s hold on Nharkava, Vihaan sees little merit in striking out in blatantly violent ways. He sees more value in tactical maneuvers and long-term, quieter measures of resistance. It’s not as glamorous and it doesn’t feel as satisfying, but he sees it as a more viable means of routing Glacia in the end.
  • The old ways being oppressed. Vihaan finds comfort in his faith and he very much enjoys the colorful, passionate practice of the old ways of his people. He’s watched the Sekhalasi dance before, and has felt the swell of peace and power in their worship. He hates that they must hide themselves now in the face of their Glacian occupiers, and he fears that the need will persist to the point where the practices and customs are forgotten over time.

Fears:
  • Saraswata being found. The older the young Queen gets, the less satisfied she grows. Vihaan visits her to comfort her as often as is safe, but he has a feeling she will not consent to remain hidden indefinitely. Tied as she is to the land and the people of Nharkava, he worries that her Darkness-given need to tend to them and help them will drive her to make choices entirely too risky to be wise.
  • Jabin losing his way. Vihaan’s brother has been through a great deal. He has lost his beloved wife to the Glacians, and his daughter is their hostage in Glacia. As the days pass, Vihaan fears that Jabin’s great losses will embitter him to the point where his soul is damaged. Not only would it mean ruin for him in this life, but it would hinder his progression towards enlightenment in the next.
  • Being exposed as a rebel supporter. Not only does Vihaan worry for his own safety (he likes to think he’d face his punishment bravely, but he doesn’t WANT that to be his end), but he understands that there are a great number of other people whose safety depends on him escaping notice for the work he does. Everyone from his brother and parents and niece to his friends among the Rebellion would likely suffer dearly if Vihaan ever allowed himself to be compromised. He is no Landen to rest safely in the knowledge that his mind cannot be breached. If he is found out, he could be responsible for the Glacians getting a truly damning variety of information.

Craft Strengths:
  • Healing. Vihaan will obviously never be as competent at Healing Craft as an actual casted Healer, but he is exceptionally good at it for a non-Healer. He began taking lessons when young out of chance, and has found the Craft to be very fulfilling and rewarding in a personal sense. Though he is limited to mending flesh and crafting brews, he does so with much care and patience.
  • Calming Rage. Vihaan grew up with a Warlord Prince for a younger brother. Though he was not naturally talented in this Craft any moreso than other Warlords, he practiced at length to perfect the skill as a matter of necessity. Keeping the peace in his house often fell to him when Jabin got riled up.

Craft Weaknesses:
  • Telekinetic Craft. For no reason Vihaan has ever uncovered, he’s always been poor at Telekinetic Craft. He can only float light things, five or ten pounds max, and not for terribly long.
  • Power Bolts Vihaan’s power bolts have always been weaker than they should be. Even when he is fully focused and concentrating, the most he can manage is a poorly aimed bolt at a strength well below even his Purple Dusk.

History:
Vihaan grew up in a time of great strife in Nharkava, and it has very visibly shaped the man he has become.  He and his siblings are too young to have experienced the worst of the days of famine, back before Lady Rien managed to organize what little resources were available into as practical a dispersal as possible. Yet Vihaan can still recall nights that he went to bed amid protestations from an empty stomach. There were rations, of course, but not always enough to support a family as blessed with Jewels as Vihaan’s was. He was quite young still when he figured out that he could acquire more resources for his family by bartering with both the Landen and the Blood around them. No one seemed to have a wealth of things to share, but Vihaan became very good about finding unorthodox things that others valued for the sake of being able to trade with them. He was also willing to go where others weren’t; most Blood he knew overlooked the Landen entirely whereas Vihaan refused to do so. They were no better off than the Blood – often their conditions were worse. Yet Vihaan learned to deal in things sentimental and unique rather than just straightforwardly valuable, and the Landen around him were just as likely to help him find such things as the Blood were. He was well-known and liked enough by the Landen nearest his village that even when his Birthright Ceremony lent him the Purple Dusk, he retained at least some of those connections.

He was not quite grown when Isyviel Valenkos, Glacia’s Gray Queen, made the decision to take Nharkava under her wing. Many Nharkavans resented Lady Rien’s acquiescence to the Glacian court, and Vihaan did not begrudge them their pride. He felt it himself, truth be told. But he also looked at the change with a hesitant sort of hope. After all, was not Glacia rich with Queens and resources? Yes, Vihaan would have preferred to have Nharkava fend for itself, even if it could not manage quite the riches of its neighbor, but he was too much of a pragmatist to still believe it would happen. Faced with the thought that people could die with their pride intact or thrive with a greater sense of humility… Vihaan did not have to think on it long. Had it only been him that he’d considered, he might have been angrier about it all from the start. Looking at his younger siblings who might benefit in the end from Glacia’s assistance, though, Vihaan dared to be hopeful. He could see how his people were turning against one another, how desperation was furthering the divide between the Landen and the Blood, and he hoped that some reprieve from that desperate need would allow some healing of that fissure. He had inherited a quiet spirituality from his mother, and in the beginning Vihaan saw the arrival of Glacia’s influence as the answer to the Territory’s prayers.

In the end, Glacia did begin to heal the Nharkavan land. Their loaned Queens provided the Territory with sorely-missed Craft, and fields began to produce yields they hadn’t seen in centuries. Even if the Land would take much more time to fully heal, it was progress. That was, however, where the benefit from Glacia’s presence stopped. Vihaan watched helplessly as the line between worthy and unworthy was slowly shifted, and though it’d always held (in the mind of many Blood, at least) between Landen and Blood, Glacia’s influence began to nudge it into the Jeweled spectrum. Those without Dark Jewels were slowly relegated to lesser status, their properties and resources liable to be seized by more Darkly Jeweled Blood. Someone came, in fact, to try and lay claim to the properties of the Dara family, a notion which finally succeeded in infuriating the usually even-tempered Vihaan. It was only luck that he had recently completed his Offering at that point, and his status as one of the “worthy” allowed him to keep control of his family’s holdings. The wolves were turned away, but Vihaan was a changed man, after that. He had lamented over the injustices around him all his life, but never before had someone come so close to actually harming his own family.

Things deteriorated from there. When a Light Jeweled childhood friend, a Healer of all people, was brutally murdered at the hands of a Glacian Warlord, and when the payment of a Price was denied to her family, Vihaan was only one of several Nharkavan natives who were incensed. It was bad enough that the Glacian influence had begun corrupting the already-bitter way Nharkava’s countrymen were treating one another. To have them so blatantly deny Blood Law just because of the color of the Healer’s Jewels was too much to bear. The group of angered natives organized themselves, and Vihaan carefully turned his long-practiced networking and acquisition skills towards helping them justice done. First with the Glacian murderer, and then again in response to another injustice against a young Light-Jeweled boy.

Vihaan’s family continued to manage the general goods business that had begun to thrive ever since the lands had begun to heal – the lynchpin that was slowly beginning to mend the Nharkavan economy. His brother Jabin met and fell in love with a Queen who would eventually rule the Sikkim Province, and his service in her court took him away from the family business. Vihaan remained behind to maintain legitimacy for his family’s ownership of their property in the eyes of the Glacians. They all feared for the fate of the youngest among them, little Saraswata the Queen. When she came away from her Birthright Ceremony with a Rose Jewel, the brothers decided that it was safest – both for Saraswata and for Nharkava – if the Queen was hidden away from the eyes of the Glacians. They’d heard of Queens being taken back to Glacia on discovery; none of the family could bear to think of Saraswata being treated in the same fashion. The years passed and Vihaan secretly grew more entrenched in the rebellious group now calling themselves “The Friends of Rose Neela”. Things splintered some, and while some members moved more towards guerilla-style attacks on the Glacians and their Nharkavan sympathizers, some others – Vihaan included – gravitated more towards the system of support set up to help (or sometimes take advantage of, if we’re being honest) Light Jeweled Glacian refugees who were fleeing their home Territory. When the Landen Council reformed and the Landen Rebellion officially took off, Vihaan devoted some of his time to aiding those efforts as well. Anything to try to help push back the madness he saw dividing his people.

Character in Play:
“What do you mean, ‘gone’? Taken back to Glacia?” Vihaan asked, his dark eyes narrowed in concern and mild confusion. He reached out a hand to touch that of the woman across from him. She was trembling still, and had yet to lift her eyes to look at him directly.

“No,” she blurted out, the single, pained tone riding the crest of a sob. She lifted her hands to cover her face, and wept bitterly. Vihaan got up and smoothly reoriented himself to sit at her side, where he could put an arm around her to try and comfort her. He squeezed her gently, petted her pale, blonde hair, and waited for her to be able to speak again. “She killed them, Vihaan,” she finally choked out. “She came with her males and they killed them all. Everyone. The whole court, just… slaughtered…” she managed, before devolving into wordless sobs once more. Vihaan could hardly believe what he’d heard. He was stunned for a moment, struggling to parse the woman’s words. She spoke again before he managed it. “If I’d been there she would’ve killed me to. I can’t do this anymore, Vihaan, Darkness forgive me, I can’t do it anymore.”

“Shhh, dear one,” he said, holding her again, petting her hair, leveling his voice to a reassuring timbre he didn’t truly feel. His heart was seized and cold, his breath stolen. Yet he pushed past the shock for her sake. “It is not you who need seek forgiveness. I should not have put you so near to such danger.” She continued to weep, and Vihaan continued to hold her, even as his mind reeled. When she’d composed herself a little more, he’d have to take her inside to tell the others. He could only pray that it would neither break their spirits for good, nor incite them towards more of the reckless intemperance that had gotten them here in the first place. It was too late for blame. Too late for forgiveness. Now, all that was left was to attempt to pick up the pieces and learn what they could from this horror.

But somehow, he swore to himself, this debt would be paid.
