Personality

Personality:

Lord Klaus Savela is known to most of Tornio is as good son, a caring brother, and a stalwart member of the Midnight Keepers. He takes deep pride in his appearance and presentation, so it is out of character for him to arrive to a meeting with a hair out of place or anything more than a day or two of stubble on his face. Every article of clothing is chosen for both what it does not say as much as what it says, though his membership ring is always on display on his right ring finger. He’s known to play with children, both light and dark jeweled, whose parents are less than attentive and at Winsol, he makes anonymous donations of food or warm clothing to those less fortunate, often from unused items he’s garnered throughout the year.. His life has been one of service since immediately after his Offering and though he prospers now, he has not forgotten where he comes from. His family fell on hard times in his youth and it grounds him to help others who may have suffered the same fate.

Klaus bolsters this reputation at every turn because it forces people pause when considering the rumors that he’s an animal walking on two legs when it comes to protecting his charges or those he cares for.

The other Klaus Savela, called Lord Wall or the Gray Keeper, is a dervish of motion in combat, brutal ferocity backed by a Gray jewel and desire to cause grievous bodily harm the moment a Healer under his protection is threatened. One Healer he stood guard for reported that Klaus escorted her to a Village Court for an assignment and charmed people with tales of small-court life. A Warlord she was previously involved with grasped her by the arm and tried to lead her away for a private and unwanted discussion about the end of the relationship. When she refused, the man attempted to drag her away.

The wine bottle shattered on the left side of the man's skull before he could shield, embedding glass in the man’s face. His eye couldn't be saved. After the Healer indicated she was unhurt, Klaus returned to the conversation without comment on the unconscious man bleeding on the floor before beside them.

Even this is at odds with the man who, deep down, fears the loss of his freedom so much that he employs a third party whenever possible to speak with a Queen’s representative so that the mere idea of meeting one in person isn’t floated in his presence. The Bond is a one-sided trap that grants Queens all power and no weakness while stripping a male of everything he is. He's seen the effects that the Bond has on males and what happens when their Queen dies or casts them aside.

Yes, it’s been explained to him that Bond isn't quite so dire.

No, it doesn’t soothe him to hear it.

These three men are at odds with the easy-going, bright, but ambition-lacking young man that Jarkko Immonen, Commander of the Patriarch, brought into the Midnight Keepers fifteen years ago. Jarkko notes only that one day after three months of training, Klaus grew withdrawn and acquired a focused anger he simply didn’t possess prior to his Offering. It's not the cold rage of a Warlord Prince but it's enough to unnerve a few people. He adheres to the Dark Religion but worries over the plight of his Light Jeweled family members. Jarkko  sees the barely-concealed hatred Klaus carries for his older brother, Voitto, and knows that it’s just a matter of time before his protege decides that the Price for making his older brother disappear is worth losing his family for good.

Likes:

  • 1.Inflicting Physical Pain - He doesn't speak of it, but Klaus is the owner of a vicious streak a mile long. His fighting style is the physical embodiment of this, a brutal mixture of joint locks, pressure point attacks, and heavy-handed strikes meant to do maximum damage with minimum effort in the protection of his charges. Whether fighting, having sex, or merely providing instruction, watching others wince or hearing them cry out in pain gives him a rush matched by few things.

  • 2. Tailored Clothing - There’s nothing like the feel of clothing made for just for you. Klaus loves being fitted for new suits, silk shirts, and tailored long coats. He spends his free time between missions choosing the outfits he plans to wear over the course of a week. When on duty, his clothing is structured for maximum range of movement and utility, Craft-altered for protection of vital areas and the covert hiding of weapons on his person.

  • 3. The Midnight Keepers- Prior to his Offering ceremony, Klaus had little direction or idea what he planned to do with his life. So long as he didn’t embarrass his parents or squander his fortune, his Gray Jewel would land him somewhere decent.

The Midnight Keepers fueled him with the purpose and direction he needed. The sense of brotherhood and belonging with an elite organization gives him confidence. The protection of a his charges is a personal honor and something he enjoys, especially when challenged. His training under Jarkko Immonen has lead to an impressive record and the ability to travel the length and breadth of Glacia in service to the Organization. He’s made friends (and even a few lovers) among the Healers he’s protected and seen more of Glacia than he ever would have sitting behind a desk at Court or in the employ of a Queen. He’s grateful to the Keepers for his service.

    Dislikes:

  • 1. Protocol - Protocol makes the monsters smile and pretend at nobility. But that’s all it is: pretense. He understands that Protocol exists to keep everyone from killing each other over minute provocations in public, but that doesn’t stop anyone from hiring someone to murder an enemy in private or doing it themselves for their own personal enjoyment. Perhaps his Gray Jewel makes him overconfident, but Klaus wouldn’t mind if everyone just started swinging and let Mother Night sort it out.

  • 2. Voitto - Klaus is not close with his older brother, Voitto, but his hatred of the man stems from his devotion to the Dark Religion and his treatment of their parents. Voitto has swallowed every drop of the Dark Religion’s poison and plans to collar their parents and younger sister once the collars he's ordered arrive. When Klaus confronted him, Voitto threatened their parents lives to insure Klaus’s silence. Voitto doesn't play this card often because, at the end of the day, his younger brother stands deeper in the Abyss than him.

It doesn't stop Klaus from feeling helpless.

  • 3. Open Spaces - Klaus likes knowing the location of every exit inside of a structure where his charge is located in case they need to escape at a moment’s notice. He had a bad experience when a charge decided to aid someone in the village square four years ago. Klaus killed the man, though his Healer was slashed in the arm, delaying their leaving the village by a few hours. Klaus will physically carry away any of his charges who wish to do business outdoors where he cannot control the terrain.

    Fears:

  • 1. Being Wrong About the Dark Religion - He's heard, now and again, a few people espouse the idea that the Dark Religion is wrong and that Mother Night would not sanction the treatment of the Light Jeweled as it has occurred under Queen Elisif Brenden. The opposite question keeps Klaus awake at night: What if the Dark Religion is the one true path for, not just Glacia, but all of Kaeleer? Learning this would rattle Klaus's worldview and bring him to his knees. For it means that Voitto has been right in his treatment of their family all along...and Klaus has fought against it to salve his pride.

  • 2. Disappointing Jarkko- Commander Jarrko Immonen has been the strongest male influence in his life, even over his father. Klaus would not be a Patriarch without the example set by the elder man. Jarkko worked hard to show him a life path where service to his land was rewarded with honor and recognition for a task well done. His actions, both good and bad, reflect on his mentor. Jarkko has never said it (and likely never will), but Klaus is the son he always wanted. His service honors don't measure up to that kind of honor, so Klaus does what he can to avoid tarnishing his surrogate father's legacy.

  • 3. The Queen Bond - He has served Glacia through the Midnight Keepers of his own volition for 15 years. Bonding to a woman who does not know him, does not understand him, and would demand the lion’s share of his loyalty enrages and terrifies Klaus to his core. Queens are the greatest tyrants in the world to Klaus’s thinking and the man who prides himself on control of himself cannot imagine a fate worse than being tethered to a woman he did not choose. There’s no all-powerful woman controlling his destiny and, Mother Night willing, they never will be.

    Craft Strengths:

  • 1. Jewel Management - The Patriarchs stand in defense of Healers, protecting both from external threats and from their own compassion. Klaus has seen the high cost of commitment as it relates to Healer caste, resulting in broken jewels or damaged chalices. Klaus is so connected with his personal reservoir of power that he can, through touch, channel that energy to a willing party to replenish their jewel strength. The experience is deeply intimate for both Klaus and his charge.

  • 2. Protecting Inner Barriers - Training with the Midnight Keepers requires one to keep the secrets of their charges safe from those who wish to profit from them. Where most males are trained to protect the depths of their mind with silence or conflicting thoughts, those who attempt to enter Klaus’s mind hear a long, painful keening that is hard to tolerate. Prolonged contact reveals the sound as a mixture of nails on a chalkboard, a cat being skinned alive, and gravel crunching under the foot of a thousand running men all at once. Safe to say, Klaus doesn’t give away secrets easily, if at all.

    Craft Weaknesses:

  • 1. Defensive Shielding - Klaus's enjoyment of inflicting physical pain manifests in his brutal, always-advancing fighting style as he considers the best defense a punishing offense. This has also unfortunately lead to a drawback he doesn't like to think about: summoning defensive shields. Klaus can summon a defensive shield but it assembles at half the speed of other shields. Even a White jeweled Hearth-Witch can summon a shield faster than him. Those critical seconds are an issue when under fire from protectile weapons or power bolts. He has a several scars on his body to remind him of this deficiency.

  • 2. Physical Enhancement - Klaus is well aware how dangerous he would be if he could boost his strength enough to crack a man’s rib cage in a single blow or reach in and tear his heart from his chest. It deeply annoys him that skill in this craft has eluded him. His physical strength requires work and training to maintain, along with his stamina and manual dexterity.

    History:

Lennart and Netta Savela’s marriage was arranged by their parents in their middle adult years. Lennart had a child from a previous relationship, his son Voitto, but Netta took him in as her own. Their first child as a couple was born when Voitto turned seven years old. Named for his great-grandfather, Klaus was much loved by his parents, though his older brother grudgingly accepted the new child into their home. When their parents were busy, Voitto often tormented the baby by pinching him or, when he learned to walk, knocking him over onto the floor. Voitto considered this good fun, but was always punished severely by his parents when they caught him at mischief. Voitto was blessed with an Opal during his Birthright and he was quickly snatched up for training by the local court.

Seven more years passed in which Klaus grew into a thoughtful, and loving boy. This was the year that his younger sister, Karita, joined the family. Unlike Voitto, Klaus welcomed his sister with open arms, declaring himself her protector. He walked with her to school, always passing the home of Prince Jarkko Immonen, one of the storied Midnight Keepers of Glacia. The older man treated the boy kindly, but tolerated no foolishness from Klaus. When he saw the young man being harassed by a few local boys, Jarkko pulled him aside and taught him a simple wrist-lock that he could use on anyone. He never got to use it, though.

The neighborhood boys studiously avoided the Klaus after that, though no one would say why.

When Voitto returned home that year, he tormented Karita much as he had Klaus and kindled an anger inside the boy that he didn’t understand at the time. Knowing that he couldn’t lay a hand on Voitto because of his Opal, Klaus waited until his older brother retired for the night. Stealing into the kitchen, he grabbed his mother’s frying pan and crept into his brother’s room. The joint-lock that Lord Jarkko taught him wasn’t very effective.

The frying pan to the face conveyed the message: Don’t touch my sister.

The young Warlord took savage joy in his brother’s screams and the spray of blood from his broken nose. Voitto didn’t tell their parents, knowing that Klaus’s half of the story would reveal his abuse of Karita. Voitto grew more subtle in his attacks on his brother and sister, but he never turned his back on Klaus again. Klaus enjoyed the accomplishment of protecting someone and it made Voitto’s revenge tolerable.

Voitto’s harassment ended abruptly when Klaus received his Green Jewel at his Birthright Ceremony. For the first time, Klaus could see genuine fear in his brother’s eyes when they were in the same room. Two dark jeweled sons was a great blessing from Darkness; Lennart and Netta held a small celebration with close family and friends. They hid from their children the fact that their bakery was faring badly due to his Lennart’s poor health. Voitto avoided helping out as much as he could, leaving Klaus to spend late nights with his mother preparing for the following day before returning home to help make Father more comfortable. Lennart lived three more years in poor to middling health before passing away in his sleep when Klaus was eleven.

Voitto stopped coming home after that, leaving Mother to deal with mounting bills and little money. Lord Jarkko helped out quietly and spent more time with Klaus. They exercised together and Klaus found a sounding board in the older man, one who helped him cope with the loss of his father and abandonment by his older brother. When Klaus received the Gray at his Offering Ceremony, his mother and Jarkko were in attendance along with Karita, who’d earned her Rose the same day. Jarkko asked him what he planned to do with his life and Klaus admitted that he hadn’t considered it, though helping his mother was the most important thing.

Voitto returned home and asked to speak to his brother privately.

Seems that your mother is having some trouble, Klaus. You know, she took care of me for a few years and I’m in a position to return the favor. Provided you do something for me.

Even today, Klaus regrets asking the price.

Just get down on both knees and ask me to help your mother.

Klaus still remembers the fury that burned through him that night, but he also remembers the shame. Not that he submitted to his brother’s demented wish; his pride wasn’t worth his mother’s suffering. Voitto’s words cut deeper than that.

Whenever you think you’re better than me, whenever you think that Gray jewel around your neck means you can look down your nose at me, I want you to remember this moment. Remember that a Red brought a Gray to his knees.” Voitto said, his voice laced with venom.

Mother's bakery was losing money and several of the appliances were failing. Klaus's portion of his father's inheritance went into keeping the bakery afloat, leaving little money for him to contribute. Days after his humiliation at Voitto's hands, however, contractors arrived to fix damaged appliances and renovate the building. A few Hearth-Witches sought employment, allowing Netta and Karita to take days off and attend to their home.

It didn't escape Klaus's notice that the "Help Wanted" signs hadn't drawn people to apply at the shop. Somehow, though, Voitto had uncovered a number of unemployed people almost over night. Not to mention that the local Village Court suddenly realized that there was a bakery in the area after ignoring it for several years.

He asked Jarkko to train him for the Midnight Keepers out of respect for the older man, but also so that his mother and sister would never need help from Voitto again. Jarkko’s teachings helped Klaus excel and, in time, he joined the Patriarchs Division of the Midnight Keepers, protecting Healers in the course of their duties. Klaus respects the Healers in his charge, but more than once he's either had to replenish their jewels after overworking themselves or consign a patient to death because their Healer refused to accept a life truth that he learned when his own father passed away:

    You can't save everyone.

Klaus covered his personal anger at the world with excellent manners, attention to Protocol, and a dedication to his charges that leaves fond memories in their minds. His ability to energize spent jewels provides a deeply personal communion that more than one Healer said reminded her of her Virgin Night in all the best ways. That the sudden intimacy his skills provide often leads to learning about his charges in a more carnal fashion is just another perk of his sacred duty.

He’s been careful to avoid meeting Queens where possible, but of those he’s encountered so far, he’s not been bound. The Midnight Keepers changed his world, allowing him to present himself as a professional, to engage in respectful employment, and to earn enough money to make sure that his mother and sister live well. The organization also lets him indulge his less civil activities when someone attacks his charges or wants to pick a fight with a Gray.

Klaus has heard that Voitto is involved in illegal dealings with his local court, but he doesn’t speak to his brother unless it is necessary. So far, it hasn't been necessary. Jarkko says Father would be proud of how he turned out, but Klaus can't bring himself to believe it.

No father would look kindly on a son who wants to murder his own brother.

    Show Us What You've Got

    Character in Play:

Wait, wait, wait. Explain to me one more time exactly why you had to snap the man’s neck that way.” Commander Jarkko Immonen said, looking up at the soldier before him. If anyone had told the Commander of the Patriarchs, faction of the Midnight Keepers, that the man before him would be both his most successful agent and his single greatest pain in his ass, Jarkko would have laughed them out of Glacia. He wasn’t laughing now. While this wasn’t the worst kill that Klaus Sevela had ever made, it was a righteous kill as the target, Valdemar Makinen, had attempted to murder Lady Emma Siimes, a Healer in Randers who may or may not be skirting the edge of legality in her dealings in that area. Ordinarily, they could cover call it the price of doing business. Makinen was Light Jeweled and shouldn’t have attacked Lady Siimes as she was under Klaus’s care.

The problem lay in two unwelcome developments.

The first was that Makinen was bound to a Village Queen under Miina Kalas, Queen of Ivalo Province. If this Queen pushed it up chain to her District Queen, and the District Queen pushed it up to Kalas, there would be problems for Klaus. Jarkko didn’t want that for the boy (he still thought of him as a boy, even after all these years), but the great truth among the Blood was that there was always a price. Nowhere was that more evident than in the second problem that Valdemar Makinen’s death created.

He was also a Summit, member of a brother branch of the Midnight Keepers.

Klaus stood at attention while Jarkko read him the riot act...again. Yes, Valdemar Makinen’s blood was on his hands, but Klaus found vindication in the fact that he hadn’t started the fight. His three-day contract with Lady Siimes had gone better than expected, especially once the ice broke between them. It wasn’t long before the strings of her corset broke either, but Klaus put that particular memory away to focus on Jarkko’s question.

Am I boring you, Lord Savela?

No, sir. In answer to your question, Makinen followed us for two and a half days, shielded from sight. I attempted twice to contact him and back him off, but he wouldn’t respond to my psychic thread. He attacked on day three and tried to break my jewels before attacking Lady Siimes. Even then, I didn’t kill him. I dislocated his shoulder and knocked him out.” Klaus said.

Yeah, it’s in your report.” Jarkko said, holding up the manila file.

Then you know I didn’t kill him until he attacked us that evening in Randers. He tried to kill Lady Siimes; he nearly succeeded. I acted in her defense and now he's dead. He wasn’t going to stop.” Klaus said.

And you didn’t break his neck like that for any other reason?

I didn’t say that, sir. I acted in defense of my charge to end the fight. You taught me that.” Klaus said, only now breaking bearing to look down at the shorter, older man. Klaus respected his mentor deeply. He hated putting Jarkko in positions like this but someone had hired a Summit to kill that woman and keep their hands clean. Most Midnight Keepers respected each other’s assignments but things were changing as the Silent Civil War escalated. Even the Midnight Keepers weren't immune to the prejudices between the dark and light jeweled.

The new guard is shitting on the old ways. Jarkko said.

Klaus agreed, but age and jewel color had nothing to do with it.

Makinen was a disrespectful asshole that was now also a dead asshole.

I suppose I did. Now we’ve got bigger issues even before Queens come into the picture. Valdemar Makinen was trained by Kain Eskola.” Jarkko said.

    Klaus inhaled and then sighed.

    Fuck.

Then Eskola’s training failed that man. He should’ve waited until I was gone to do the job.” Klaus said.

I agree. But men like you, Lord Harmaa and Prince Eskola make it hard for the new blood to shine. No one believes in earning the blood on their name anymore with hard work and good service. They want instant recognition. They want trophies." Jarkko said, sighing deeply. He looked old then, older than Klaus remembered. He was healthy man in his early sixties but he was slimmer than Klaus remembered. His hair was thinning so much that Klaus could see scalp through the silver mane that was once pure blonde.

Once he retires, the next commander won't take your shit, Klaus.

"I need to reach out to Commander Kovisto and address this before Eskola decides your head would look good on the mantle over his fireplace.” Jarkko said.

I can handle myself, sir.” Klaus said.

Yeah, I know. So can he. He’s got more kills on record than you do. And he does it for a living. I hear he flays people, Klaus. You don't tangle with an animal like that, no matter what color his jewels are.

Like I said, I can handle myself, sir.

Well, you’re doing it from home. You’re headed back to Tornio today.” Jarkko said, turning on his heel and marching back to his desk.

You’re benching me? Sir, I did--

Relax, Klaus. I’m not taking you out of the field. I am putting you in a different field just in case I can’t smooth this over with the Summit right away.” the Commander said, reaching into his desk and taking out another folder. He slid it across the desk. Klaus reached down and picked it up, thumbing it open. The woman inside was pretty, though her jaw was a little more square than most women. She had the soft eyes of a Healer if Klaus had ever seen them. He tested the name on his tongue.

Lady Sanna Omdahl. Court Healer of Tornio Province under the Queen Maarika Sydan-Harmaa. Any relation to--

Yeah, same Harma. His wife, if you can believe it. Might be the only guy in Glacia that worries me more than Eskola. Eskola can at least blame it on being a Warlord Prince. Harmaa’s a cold piece of artwork. Nice guy but his smile never reached his eyes. Not to mention she’s got a couple of other dark jeweled men there. You’re meeting with her in two days’ time.” Jarkko said.

Riiken will let me know what kind of person she is.” Klaus said. His assistant usually met a client’s representatives just to iron out details keep him from the possibility of Bonding to a Queen.

Ohhh no. No. You are going to meet her in person, Klaus. After this bullshit stunt, you better pray you bind to that woman. Might make that dumbass Queen rethink pushing this up the chain if she knows you’re attached to a rival Province Queen. Might even do you some good.

Klaus glared at Jarrko across the table, anger flaring in his chest. He’d pushed the old man too far this time and he knew it. Beneath the anger was a thrill of fear. Lady Sydan-Harmaa  had other males bound to her. Would he see vacant expressions in their eyes as they paid homage to their Queen? He wouldn’t become one of those men. He’d fight it with every fiber of his being before he became one of them.

    Fuck!

    You’re dismissed, Lord Savela.

Klaus saluted and turned to go.

Tell your mother I said hello and bring me a cake. And for the love of the Darkness, try not to kill anyone on this mission!

I can handle myself, sir.” Klaus said, opening the door. He looked back over his shoulder at his commander.

    But thank you for worrying.

He walked out with Lady Omdahl’s file in hand and thumbed it open. There was another expression on her face, something else in her eyes that Klaus recognized. Something he knew.

    Something he liked.

Maybe this won't be so bad after all.
