Appearance

Play By: Kunal Kapoor
Distinguishing Features:

Chand’s dark hair is curly and a little messy, like he just finished playing in the rain. His beard is often trimmed enough to keep it presentable, but otherwise goes unshaven. His most defining feature is his imposing height. At six-foot-four, the Warlord Prince draws attention for both his looks and his height, but his intense, focused gaze usually forces people to cross the road to avoid him in the hopes he'll find another target for his ire.

Personality

Personality:

Violence and passion run deep in Chand, even for a Warlord Prince. He celebrates life in all of its forms, whether it’s dancing in rainstorms, cooking for his family, or good sex (especially during a Rut), Chand lives in the moment because tomorrow isn’t promised to anyone, especially now. Glacia is stealing his people’s land, crushing their spirits, and further shaping Nharkava into a vassal state to carry the banner of their Dark Religion to the rest of the Kaeleer. If he dies tomorrow, Chand wants a life well-lived to flash before his eyes as the world goes dark.

He’s not ready to die just yet.

Chand is possessive of the people that he considers his and isn’t afraid to exert control over their safety if needed. His sister, Kavuri, is most often the victim of this because she is under his protection and he expects her to defer to his will. He’s learned to (mostly) control the flares of temper that accompany new people entering the lives of those he’s close but sometimes the air chills when he’s introduced to a new acquaintance. He might hold no personal grudge against a newcomer, but Chand is accustomed to sympathy for the situation in Nharkava. He’s heard all of the pretty words about how everyone needs to work together against Glacia’s overreach. But words are wind and the people speaking them usually vanish when the fighting starts. Chand keeps the circle of people that he trusts very small, limited to people who have proven themselves to him so as to avoid disappointment.

In return, Chand is a dependable ally to those who earn his trust. Violence is an acceptable measure when protecting those he loves from the invaders of his homeland. Murder is acceptable when rooting out and destroying those who collaborate with the Glacians to keep Nharkava oppressed. Chand does not brook disrespect to himself, to his allies, or to his Queen. Step out of line, attack his people, and get corrected without remorse. The Friends of Rose Neela were slain without mercy for the sin of trying to liberate their homeland by any means necessary. His father was murdered for demanding freedom. The Glacians gave no quarter, so they should expect none in turn.

As violent and vicious as Chand is in relation to his friends and allies, he is particularly savage when it comes to protecting his Queen.

The heart-bond with Neesia Ashtikar gives Chand a focus for the deepest levels of his possessive nature and protective urges. He can’t control just how obsessed he is growing with his Queen and it frightens him. Worse, her seemingly inability to simply accept his protection rakes at his temper like knives against his flesh. The bond has forced Chand to become more introspective, more cautious, more forward-thinking in his plots and plans. Any threat to Neesia is met with overwhelming and deadly force, no matter how small the infraction.

He’d rather apologize a thousand times for an overreaction than lose her due to inaction or negligence.

Likes:

  • 1. Cooking: Whether he’s cooking for five people or fifty, Chand loves the kitchen. It’s one of the few places where his naturally  possessive nature is sidelined by his enjoyment of helping others make a good meal. Cooking brings people together and bonds them like few other things in the world. Salty, spicy, or sweet, Chand has memorized hundreds of recipes handed down through generations upon generations of the Nayar family, and he’s ready to get to work at a moment’s notice.

  • 2. Dancing in the Rain: Chand’s parents married young and remained happy for decades. They often took Chand and Kavuri outside to dance and play in the rain. His mother and sister no longer dance, while his father has returned to the Darkness. Chand, however, can still be found in the jungle during thunderstorms, soaked to the bone and smiling like the cat that ate the canary.

  • 3. Prayer: Before his father’s death, Chand rarely stopped at the temples he passed along the various roads in Nharkava. Now he's more aware of them and more willing to stop in and donate marks or help the Priestesses and give back to the community. He also prays to Mother Night, asking Her to take care of his father and grant him peace in this life and the next. The experience, while painful, leaves his soul clean and his mind clear enough to focus on protecting those he loves who still live.

    Dislikes:

  • 1. The Dark Religion: More than anything else the Glacians have introduced to Nharkava, this poison has done nearly-irreparable harm to his people. Even as a Dark Jeweled male, he wants no part of a belief system that determines worth based on the one thing no one controls. Under the Dark Religion, his Queen would be collared and her control ring handed to some Glacian bastard who’d hurt her while claiming it as Mother Night’s will.

  • 2. New People: Chand is territorial over the people that he considers his. While he’s not hostile to new acquaintances, he does not count on anyone who hasn’t proven themselves, regardless of charm. Words lie, actions don’t. It’s that simple.

  • 3. Obedience Collars & Control Rings: Chand hates these devices and their growing prevalence in his homeland. The idea that the Light Jeweled need to be collared and controlled like animals makes his stomach turn. Whenever Chand has a chance to destroy unused collars, he takes it. Otherwise, he will watch the collared to see who holds their ring. If possible, Chand is quite comfortable with killing a ring-bearer in order to set someone free.

    Fears:

  • 1. Losing His Free Will: Chand is a self-directed and self-reliant man, one who has controlled his destiny and influenced his family’s since his youth. Few people refused him for fear of provoking his rage. Now, Chand’s life and priorities have rearranged to accommodate his service to Neesia. He is obsessed with her safety and well-being, sometimes to a degree that unnerves him. He fears the day when his only thought in life is what makes her happy...and Neesia’s willingness to use it against him.

  • 2. Losing his family’s land: The Nayar homestead has been in Chand’s family for three centuries. Generations of his family have tilled and tended the land. Chand believed that, eventually, he would tend that land until he grew too old, and then pass it on to his son. His father’s death, and the bond to Neesia, means that Chand must help manage the land on his mother’s behalf. The Glacians are greedy, though, and Chand worries that it’s just a matter of time before the Glacians attempt to take their land by force.

  • 3. Killing During a Rut: Chand enjoys his Ruts, but once the madness ends, there are consequences. He cannot be held responsible for any injuries he leaves behind, but they aftermath bothers him just the same. Chand worries about the day the wakes from a three-day exertion to find that he’s killed the woman he’s focused upon. He’s further afraid that it may be a friend like Kiara...or worse, Neesia.

    Craft Strengths:

  • 1. Enhanced Battle Craft: Confronted with a group of hostile warriors, Chand can determine who is leading and who is a subordinate. Once decided, Chand can determine who to kill or disable in order to demoralize the group.

  • 2. Reading Psychic Scents: As a Warlord Prince, Chand is accustomed to being granted a wide-berth to do as he pleases. Some people, however, take umbrage when a Warlord Prince comes to town. Chand has learned to pick out the scents of fear, anger, or aggression so that he knows whom to focus his ire upon and whom to walk away from at first opportunity.

    Craft Weaknesses:

  • 1. Jewel Management: Chand's Green Jewel grants him deep power. His tendency to use every weapon in his arsenal to protect those he cares about often leads to quickly depleting his well of power if he’s not careful.

  • 2. Deception Craft: Chand is a terrible liar and his emotions are easy to read in the grimace on his face, the tension in his shoulders and the hard look in his eyes. He's not rude to new people, but he also doesn't see a need to make his words softer or sweeter to assuage them. Deceptions of any kind flat-out don't work work for him, which gets annoying when he'd rather not talk about something and someone just doesn't take the hint.

    History:

Chand is the oldest of two children born to Ayush and Nagini Nayar on the Nayar homestead in Jharkand Province. Ayush and Nagini fell in love and married young to the consternation of their parents. Once they married, they built a house Nayar property and began building their lives together. Just a year after their nuptials, Chand came kicking and screaming into the world. His scent marked him as a Warlord Prince by his first birthday, but even without his scent the signs were hard to miss. His temper notoriously foul and his father ended up with more than one bruise from the little Warlord Prince’s fists. Ayush was always patient with his son and the two grew closer over the years.

When his sister, Kavuri, arrived a few years later, Chand only broke a few glasses and plates in protest, proclaiming that he would not be sharing his parents with anyone. So it has always been that Chand is wary of new people until they’ve proven themselves. Over time, he accepted Kavuri into his circle but even today, he expects her to follow his lead because he is the older brother and it is his duty to protect her.

Chand hoped for a Tiger Eye at his Birthright ceremony, hoping to match his parents. When he received his Blood Opal, he initially believed that they’d be disappointed in him for not matching their Jewels. Instead, his parents threw him a party and made his favorite foods in celebration. A few years later, Kavuri received the Rose at her birthright, further cementing the possibility that their children would earn Dark Jewels. Ayush hoped that they would both eventually serve in a Court and bring honor to their family. Chand’s best friends, Vinay and Induri, hung around him much more now, for Chand’s protective and possessive streaks grew even stronger upon gaining his Blood Opal and he got into more than one fight defending his friends or his sister.

When Chand turned 14, change swept Nharkava in the form of Isyviel Valenkos, Priestess Queen of Glacia. Nharkava’s land had suffered since the Purge and the Glacian Priestess Queen lead her people to Nharkava under the guise of helping the Nharkvans maintain their Territory. Lady Rien accepted, grudgingly. Chand was deeply wary of the pale-skinned, pale-haired northerners who treated Kavuri and him with wary respect, but seemed to look down their noses at his parents. In time, Ayush was offered a position in the Third Circle of the Territory Court, where he learned that the Glacians offer of aid wasn’t as benevolent as it seemed. Father began working longer and later, leaving Chand to take care of his mother and sister.

When Chand turned twenty, he underwent his Offering Ceremony with his mother and sister in attendance. At sunrise, he emerged with a Green Jewel. Despite being a only a single step deeper in the Abyss than his Birthright, Chand loved the look and the color of his jewels. In order to bring in more money for the family, Chand took up work guarding caravans headed toward the city markets. The combination of his Jewels, Caste, and imposing height often made brigands think twice about attacking his charges. When it didn’t, Chand fought back savagely, granting to no quarter. Year after year, the Glacians’ presence grew more prevalent while their religious beliefs permeated the the cities.

Winter 187 saw Chand caring for his mother when she fell ill, brought on from exhaustion due to being overworked. Ayush purchased the services of Kiara Makur, a Healer noted for her rapport with her patients. Chand met her the day following her arrival as he saw her dancing in the rain while he was out walking. The pair became fast friends and Kiara was soon the focus of both of his Ruts that year. The Healer gave of herself freely and she kept up with Chand, making it easier for him to enjoy himself. Kiara also taught Chand much about living in the moment and enjoying his life, which encouraged him to forgive his father’s secretive ways. While he and Kiara did not stay together long term, she keeps in contact with his family and they remain close friends.

The Summer of 191 was another year of changes for the Warlord Prince. His father left for work that morning, asking Chand to be at home when he returned, for her had an important matter to discuss. Chand agreed and took a small escort job to a neighboring town, expecting to return home by nightfall to speak with his father. Despite Chand’s late return home, Ayush wasn’t home when he arrived. So he waited.

He waited all through the night and the following day.

He waited for a week. After that first week, Chand went to the home of his father’s friend, Pandu, who also served with him at Orissa. When he arrived, Pandu’s family was in mourning. From them, Chand learned the members of Mahamari Rien’s Court had attempted to defy the Queen of Glacia, Elisif Brenden. For whatever reason, Elisif and her three Ebon Gray males butchered the entire Territory Court to a man.

Numb, Chand held out frail hope that his father had perhaps escaped beforehand, or that he was just too injured to come home. When he found no indication of either outcome, he returned home to break the news to his mother and sister. Chand’s pain was deep, but watching his mother mourn rent his soul to ribbons. And it was that pain that crystallized into cold rage as the Glacians grew even bolder in their invasion.

Chand resolved, after his father’s wake, to go to Orissa and murder every Glacian he could find at the cost of his life. He went to his father’s crypt to pay his respects, believing that he’d join him soon. Yet his life changed once more upon entering that tiny space.

Chand found his Queen also paying respects to his father. The shock of the bond dulled his suicide mission, but Chand was shocked to learn that his father had been a member of the Friends of Rose Neela, an organization that had been fighting against the Glacians for some time. Resolving that his father would not die in vain, and that his Queen would not go unprotected for another minute, Chand joined the Friends of Rose Neela as muscle, as a protector, as whatever they need to get the job done.

The Dark Religion would enslave his mother and his Queen simply because they bear Light Jewels. Chand won’t have it. He will not let them be collared. He won't let them be controlled by the Glacians.

He will avenge his father, even if it means dying with his fingers wrapped around the slender little throat of the new Territory Queen.

    Character in Play:

    Late Summer 191- Manipur

Chand Nayar was tired of waiting.

He put away the whetstone and then vanished his scimitar. His clothing, black pants and  white tunic, were layered with several protection spells, all ready to go activate at a moment’s notice. Chand grabbed his backpack from a corner of the room. Filled with several days’ food and water, he would need it to make sure that he arrived at Orissa with the strength necessary to fulfil his grim task. His sister, Kavuri, had been talking to him for nearly twenty minutes, but he wasn’t hearing her. He made his decision and there was no turning his mind from it. Ice formed on the walls as slung his bag over his shoulder.

Kavuri fell silent when the temperature dropped.

I’m done talking, Kavi. I’m sick of talking. Papa's killers will pay.” he said, heading for the door.

Chand, please! Don’t do this![ The Glacians will kill you if you go to Orissa!” she yelled. Her eyes were wet with unshed tears, but Chand ignored them. He wouldn't be stopped today. He couldn’t stop as long as the people who murdered his father still walked the earth. Those people had returned to their palaces of power in the far north, probably drinking champagne and celebrating the murders they’d committed. Chand’s rage grew deeper and the the ice on the walls grew thicker and deeper.

    CHAND!

He walked out the door, headed down the stairs, and then walked out the front door without a backward glance. His family’s home resided on a small patch of land near the edge of Manipur District that had been in his family nearly a thousand years. Long ago, Mother Night walked this land educating the Blood on how to live in peace with the world and defend the Landen under their charge. Chand loved those old stories and way that things flowed and fit together in those idyllic days before the Purge culled the Blood and gave the Landen dominion over nearly everything.

He headed away from the house, toward the small family crypt on the south edge of the property where the wake was had been held just hours ago. Weeks had passed since the attack and they’d just been informed that his father’s remains couldn’t be found. Mother needed closure so they interred an empty box and sang songs for someone whose soul would never find rest. Chand couldn’t join them knowing all of that. He couldn’t cook for his family and pretend that he didn't want to kill every Glacian in sight for what happened to his father.

Still, in that moment, he needed to say goodbye to his father. He needed to tell him that everything would turn out alright, someday.

Most importantly, Chand needed tell his father that he was coming to join him very soon.
