Distinguishing Features:

Personality

Personality:

Yashvi is often an awkward person when first meeting someone else, or with those she doesn’t know well. To someone she does not know well, she can seem shy or even aloof. Prone to blurting out random things in hopes of striking up conversation, she has found that it is easiest to let others do the talking. However, when it comes to subjects that she knows well, she is able to talk, or monologue, for a long time without realizing that she might be boring her trapped audience. Yashvi would much rather be at home brewing more poisons than at some social event. Those who know Yashvi well will see a more outgoing side of her where she speaks her mind more readily and is comfortable taking the time to come up with answers and truly engage with whoever she’s talking with. Her passion shies through when she is able to converse about something she knows a lot about, or something she feels strongly about.

What Yashvi lacks in social graces she makes up for with intelligence and an eye for details. While others are busy talking, she is taking in the person’s psychic scent, the mood of the room, the objects around them. The eye for details carries over into her work, which is what helped her rise to her current status within the Coven, which she finds stressful but necessary. She enjoyed the ability to work in the background before the Coven’s leader was killed, but pushes herself to fill the role that is needed now. The opportunity to more strongly influence the Coven was far too good to waste.

Anger tends to be a quiet, seething thing that takes on a life of its own. Rather than reacting sharp words, Yashvi is more likely to take revenge with actions. This is partly because in the heat of the moment, she usually finds herself tongue-tied, heart pounding, unable to form any sort of intelligent riposte. Those usually come to her later. When interrupted, or if an unwanted person is in her space, she can be prickly or standoffish, wanting to be left in peace.

There is a sadness to her as she mourns the deaths of her sister and father. It's a pain that she attempts to keep at bay by staying busy and focusing on avenging them. She definitely does not want to talk about their deaths, and her fear of losing someone else means that she tries to keep people at a slight distance so that they don't become personally important to her as well.

Likes:
  • Cooking and baking: Yashvi cooked with her mother as a young girl, and it began a lifelong love for it. It was one of the few times she saw her mother truly happy, and they make sure to spend time in the kitchen together whenever Yashvi visits. She enjoys the exactness of recipes: having specific amounts of each ingredient and pre-set baking times allow her to relax and enjoy cooking. At the same time, she also likes to experiment with changes to recipes to make them better, as well as coming up with completely new recipes of her own because she can track changes and write down new instructions so they can be repeated exactly the same way again.

  • Rain: Yashvi loves the sound of rain on the roof, finding it relaxing while she works. She also enjoys the power felt in thunder storms. Her favorite part, though, is the refreshed scent and feeling of rejuvenation found when the rain has ended, and finds this to be the best time to harvest the plants she uses in her poisons.

  • Books: Especially old books. Yashvi likes reading a lot, although she does not get to do so for fun often anymore with everything else going on in her life. Whether the book is fiction or nonfiction, she likes losing herself in the pages, following the journey of characters or absorbing the knowledge being presented to her. It started with a book her father gave her as a child when she was finally able to read chapter books. It was a battered copy of his own favorite book, and she keeps it in her psychic cupboard at all times, along with far too many other books.
Dislikes:
  • Humidity: it makes it feel difficult to breath; it makes her feel sweaty and gross; and it does, frankly, awful things to her hair that she has to waste time and Jewel power fixing with Craft. Honestly, what is there to like about humidity? It might be a little better than bitter cold, but not by much.

  • Gardening: While cooking tends to be a cut and dry activity, gardening feels like the opposite to Yashvi. There is so much trial and error, so many variables, and while she can water things on a schedule, that does not necessarily mean the plants will grow exactly as she expects them to. There can be issues with the soil that she does not know about, rain or extra sun can throw off her watering schedule, and don’t get her started on the insects that can devour her plants seemingly overnight.

  • Sweet Foods: Yashvi has just never liked sweet foods, preferring savory or salty options instead. Since this includes most fruit, her mother had a really difficult time getting her to eat them when she was a child, and even now she avoids them whenever possible.
Fears:
  • Losing the rest of her family: The shock of losing her father and sister at the same time when Glacia’s Coven attacked the tunnel system was already almost too much to handle. Now that the rest of her family wants to take a more active role, Yashvi finds herself distracted with ensuring their safety despite their protests. Yashvi saw the destruction in the tunnels first hand, and she has nightmares that it will happen again, taking the rest of her family this time.

  • The Twisted Kingdom: Sometimes Yashvi feels foolish for being afraid of something that is so completely part of being a Black Widow, but the pull she feels like a siren song is terrifying to her. Her first foray under the supervision of a teacher did not go well, and the teacher had to rescue her. Yashvi still fears getting lost forever, drawn in never to escape, and as a result, she focuses mainly on other skills, to the detriment of her ability to make predictions using webs.

  • Failure: A lot rides on Yashvi's ability to lead. If the Black Widows decide that they don't like what she's doing, they could take away her influence. If her timed craft fails, someone could die because of it. If her plans go awry, even more people could die. She constantly wonders whether she is doing things the right way, and worrying about whether or not her strategies will work out keeps her up a lot at night.
Craft Strengths:
  • Poisons: early on in her training, Yashvi realized that she enjoyed the process of making poisons, even down to the mechanics of mixing ingredients together. She liked the exacting nature of it, where small mistakes or purposeful changes could have large effects, and that how toxic the result was could be adjusted. Seeing that it was a strength of hers, the coven encouraged her to focus

  • Timed Craft: This sort of Craft is something Yashvi uses all the time, so it was something she focused on specifically as well as gained experience in organically. She uses it for everything from using Craft to make a spoon stir her latest brew for a specific amount of time to the trap spells that she is sneaking in with the members of the Landen rebellion. Yashvi has even figured out how to put a spell on poisons that triggers upon discovery, rendering the poison harmless to hide the fact that a Landen was carrying something harmful.
Craft Weaknesses:
  • Seduction Craft: as a Black Widow, Yashvi is supposed to be good at this stuff, or at least, she feels like she's supposed to be. Unfortunately, her attempts at this sort of Craft did not go well; the Craft was obvious and the effect was the opposite of what she was going for, leading to a swift and very embarrassing exit for her. Once she's comfortable and confident, she's plenty sensual without it anyway.

  • Combat Craft: other than basic shielding, Yashvi is almost useless in a fight. She is much better at sneaking around, avoiding altercations by taking down enemies before they have a chance to fight back. If she's forced into a situation that she has to fight, there's a chance she'll freeze up or simply use somewhat ineffective power bolts and hope for the best.
Life Story

Family:
Mother: Esha Mangal (b. 137 AP), Yellow - Rose witch
Father: Karthik Mangal (b. 138 AP), Non-Jeweled Blood - deceased 192 AP
Brother: Shakti Mangal (b. 163 AP), Opal to Sapphire Warlord Prince
Sister: Krisha Mangal (b. 165 AP), Non-Jeweled Blood - deceased 192 AP
Sister: Taahira Mangal (b. 166 AP), Rose - Purple Dusk witch

History:

Yashvi and her twin sister, Krisha were born to loving parents, they were the second and third of four children in a house that often felt chaotic to her. Even as a small child, Yashvi would hide away from the ruckus whenever she could, and her parents let her do so without much interference.

Unlike many Blood children, Yashvi’s Birthright ceremony did not feel like a guarantee of walking away with a Jewel. Her dad was Non-Jeweled Blood, as were many relatives on each side of her family. Some of her friends spoke of ‘what Jewel they would get’ while Yashvi’s focus was on if she would get one at all. There were no real patterns in her family for it, nothing for her parents to point to and say ‘well, based on that, you’ll probably get a Jewel in this range.’ And indeed, while Yashvi came away with a Jewel, her twin sister did not.

Although they were not identical twins, they were still both confused, and Krishna was jealous. Yashvi was rarely tempted to use it was leverage in fights, and their parents did their best not to favor her over her sister. Their mother and older brother had a Jewel as well, so Yashvi was hardly the first.

Despite their parents’ best efforts, this was the beginning of a wedge driven between the sisters by the different paths their lives were taking. The distance only grew when Yashvi’s snaketooth came in. It was a surprise to everyone since female Castes were rare on both sides of her family.

She felt a little adrift then as her parents figured out where she should get her Black Widow training. It was not something they had ever thought to look into before, and with everything else going on in the territory, they were hesitant to trust anyone with their daughter. Affording it was difficult as well, especially because they feared having their homes taken from them. Eventually she was able to settle into her studies, although as the years went by, the distance between her and Krisha grew to feel like a vast, uncrossable chasm.

By the time it she was old enough to make her Offering, Yashvi’s father had begun to grow more distant, too, spending more and more time with Yashvi’s sister. She couldn’t figure out what they were doing, and no matter how many times she asked, they wouldn’t tell her.

Following her and her sister’s Offering, the frustration and anger between them finally devolved into a huge fight. Accusations were made on both sides, and finally the truth came out: Krisha and their father were part of the Rebellion. Yashvi was shocked and terrified for them. What if they were caught? Killed? It made her want to figure out a way to keep them safe, and if she was not able to do that, she would help them in any other way that she could.

Yashvi and Krisha slowly settled into a new normal, from which sisterly affection slowly grew from teamwork and long nights working towards their common goal.

Her skills and desire to help and protect her family were the beginning of Yashvi’s rise within the coven. While she had no personal ambition--leadership would not have been her goal if not for her family--she saw it as the best way to achieve what she wanted to achieve. Her influence within the coven grew as she slowly gained a few followers and then more as she found Widows that she felt she could trust. The group remained relatively small.

Over time, working with the Rebellion began to shift Yashivi’s desire to help and protect her family to a need to aid those that they directly worked with. At first, she saw the others as useful tools. They could help her get poisons and traps into places that they would be more effective, and she could use them to cover more ground than she would be able to manage on her own.

The Coven’s leader saw what she was doing and why and helped her climb the ranks. Yashvi always suspected that part of the approval and encouragement came from the fact that Yashvi was not truly a threat to the leader’s status. She lacked the skills and experience necessary to take on such a role, but most importantly, she did not desire to lead the entire coven herself. Leadership was a means to an end, rather than being the end goal itself.

The means to an end became much more responsibility when the coven’s leader was killed when the territory court was wiped out by Glacia. Seeing the opportunity, Yashvi continued to climb, pushing herself far outside of her comfort zone in order to have the opportunity to influence in how the Coven used its resources. Her method of leadership was not flashy; it was no-nonsense and goal-oriented, and she was able to show what her plans were and how she wanted to get there. She liked the set-up that she and her co-leaders have; it allows her to focus instead of having to stretch herself further to oversee areas of the coven that are not within her wheelhouse. Since the Coven was somewhat compartmentalized before the death of the leader, Yashvi and the other two found that they had a common goal: to get the Glacians out of their territory, they decided that cooperation worked out well, with each working with their own branch.

Just when Yashvi felt she was getting her feet under her in her leadership role, the Glacian Coven attacked and collapsed the Rebellion’s tunnels. Her father and twin sister were among the dead. The loss was especially devastating since they had only just become best friends again, and Yashvi could only look back and see so much time wasted.

If not for her role in the Coven, she may have simply succumbed to her grief. When her older brother decided to join the movement, seeking revenge, she knew that she could not let him or any of the Black Widows that she now co-led down. So, she gathered herself and turned her leadership role into a way to focus her grief into action. Instead, she was able to focus on her own plans to remove the Glacians from their territory.

Character in Play:

Yashvi was completely tuned into the work that she was doing, trying to come up with way to increase the potency of one of the poisons she made regularly. Books were stacked on the table around her, some dogeared and others with multiple bookmarks stuffed into them. Her workroom was always chaotic, and to an outsider it probably just looked like a mess, but to Yashvi, it was an organized mess. She generally knew where everything was.

As she dripped an extract from one of her plants into the vial of poison and imbued it with Craft, it started to smoke. That was not the intended reaction. It was a delicate balance, she had found, and she was trying to make that balance less sensitive. A thought occurred to her and she slapped her hand down on the table and spun herself around to flip through the nearest book.

"Ah-ha-" She started to say to herself when the door slammed open. She had secured it with a Blood Opal lock, which meant that there were few people she knew who would barge in, and most of the ones that could would respect the point of the lock. Confusingly, the person who appeared in the doorway was usually one of those.

"Shakti?" Yashvi addressed her brother. "What-"

"Dad and Krisha are dead." The snarled words echoed in the the room, and it was as though all the air was sucked out of the space. Yashvi forgot how to breathe. She opened and closed her mouth several times while trying to put together a question from the jumble of thoughts in her head. How? Why? Where? Her limbs felt numb, and she was very glad that she was already sitting down.

"There was an attack on the tunnels," Shakti said and Yashvi's unfocused gaze became immediately clear. She knew exactly which tunnels he was talking about, and that meant the loss of life was probably... the thought sparked anger in her chest.

"When?"

"Now."

"Who?" Yashvi said in a low tone, laced with a mixture of pain and anger.

"Glacia."

It only took the one word to send Yashvi descending into the Abyss. The air around her chilled at the same rate, and on all the shelves in the room, the glass bottles and vials shattered in a wave.

The release of raw power dulled her anger and made room for shock and denial. They couldn't be dead. There had to be some mistake. Her brother must have shielded himself because he did not react to the outburst, nor did he look twice at the broken glass that now littered the floor.

"What are we going to do now?" He asked her. She could see him working to keep his own temper leashed, how he needed to do something. She needed that, too.

"We're going to finish what Dad and Krisha started." Yashvi replied. They by no means started the Rebellion, but their part was as important as anyone else's and as she clung to the grim determination that was keeping her afloat in the sea of new grief, Yashvi vowed to see that mission through.

There was much for her to do now. Some of her Coven sisters were almost certainly dead. A Black Widow appeared at the door, ready to give Yashvi the news she already knew and Yashvi sent her away with a message to gather the other Widows. They were needed at the tunnels. They needed to help, to find out what happened, and to make sure that it never happened again.
