Watering mouths and business deals

Mara was hungry.  Eirnann was off on his duties and she was taking advantage of a lazy morning before heading into work at the Rocky Haven.  Having a full staff gave the opportunity to do things like sleeping in a little later and she was enjoying the privilege fully.  Of course, Eirnan’s accommodations were much nicer than her own small little bed in her tiny back room of the Haven.  Now that she had moved into his rooms, maybe she could do something a little more productive with that room.

She still felt a little strange as she wandered the halls of the Court Seat.  In some ways she didn’t feel like she had earned to be in such an illustrious place.  She wasn’t Court, she didn't really serve Eirnan and she was more than certain that some people were thinking her involvement with the Steward’s Second had more to do with what she could get out of him.  Well, they weren’t wrong there, but what she wanted from Eirnan had nothing to do with wealth, power or standing.  She just loved that man from the top of her head to the tips of her toes and he loved her in return.

A happy smile crossing her lips, she almost skipped towards the hall that lead down to the kitchens where she hoped she could find something a little left over from breakfast.  She had regretted missing out on the morning meal with Eirnan but he had left so early that she hadn’t been able to rouse herself.   Part of that was his doing, the sexy bastard.

Something wonderful and delicious smelling drifted down the hall in front of her and she closed her eyes, inhaling deeply through her nose as her feet pulled her faster towards the scent.  Warm bread, best scent in the world, and combined with the smell of yeast and dough was something else, something that made her mouth water.  She couldn’t pin point it, but as she turned through the doorway that let her into the kitchen, she was almost drooling in eagerness.

“Oh please tell me there’s enough of whatever that is to share, even a little piece,” she all but whined at the woman who was pulling a tray of the culinary dream from the oven.

Rachyla hummed softly to herself as she bustled about her little corner of the kitchens, cleaning up. It was getting late in the morning, almost time to get started preparing lunch for the Court and there were a few things on the dinner menu that would need to be started soon as well.

She glanced in her oven at the breads baking on her way from the counter to the large triple sink - yes, just a few minutes longer for most of it. The rolls at the back were a little further along so she inverted a shield over just the rolls so that she could lower the temperature of that section of the oven.

The petite Hearth Witch didn't normally bake bread this late in the day unless she was making fresh rolls for dinner, but today... well today she had had an itch to do some extra. Greta, thankfully, had only smiled indulgently as her young assistant set about mixing up a veritable smorgasbord of breads and pastries.

She had just pulled the first large pan out of the oven when she heard an unfamiliar woman's voice.

Oh please tell me there’s enough of whatever that is to share, even a little piece.

Rachyla looked up with a big smile. “Of course Lady. Let me grab the other pan, and I can get you your choice.” She quickly put action to her words. While she waited for the other woman to choose from a wheat loaf, brioche braids, yeast rolls, or one of the many fruit or chocolate filled pastries, Rachyla prepared to offer tea or coffee to the witch.

“Of course Lady. Let me grab the other pan, and I can get you your choice.”

Mara could have let out a squeal of delight and plopped herself down on one of the stools that lined the massive stone work island, her hungry eyes looking at all the choices. “I would say one of each but that would make me seem greedy,” she said though her eyes all but screamed the truth of her wish.  Taking a deep breath, she sighed and said, “I will just content myself with one of those brioche, oooh and maybe one of those chocolate filled pastries.  And if it's not too much trouble, coffee?  You don’t have to make a fresh cup, I’ll take whatever is left in the pot as long as it is hot.  I’m sure it’ll still be ten times better than the sludge left over the morning in my own pot especially if we had a night full of drunkards who wouldn’t be able to step straight without a shot of dark roast to sober them up.”

Mara leaned her elbow on the counter and placed her cheek in her hand, watching the food that was quickly placed onto a plate with a dreamy expression.  “I hope I’m not bothering you at your duties, but I missed morning meals and I am ravished and I know as soon as I go into work I won’t have a chance to sit and eat til well into the afternoon.  My cook is good, but her biscuits and breads are a bit rough for my tastes though they do go well with the stews she provides, so long as you let them soak a while.”

Accepting the offered coffee, she pulled it to her lips and downed it with only a small grimace to the bitterness of the black liquid.  She didn’t even bother with her usual extra cream extra sugar concoction, she needed the jolt of alertness to wake her up.    After taking another sip, which wasn’t quite so hard to swallow, she smiled and said, “Oh, I’m so rude.   I’m Mara, I own the Rocky Haven down in the village.”

Rachyla smiled in delight - there was nothing that made the petite Hearth Witch happier than feeding someone who enjoyed her baking and she could tell that this woman would definitely enjoy it. She loaded the requested items on a plate and set it in front of the woman.

“You're in luck, Lady. It's a fresh pot of coffee... I need a fair bit to get through the day so I always have a pot on.”

As Mara introduced herself, the Hearth Witch slipped a roll she had buttered onto the plate in front of the other woman with a mischievous grin.

“It's a pleasure to meet you Lady Mara. I'm Rachyla. I haven't been to the Rocky Haven, but then I haven't spent much time in the village yet.”

She poured herself a cup of coffee and stirred in a bit of honey before she parked herself opposite Mara.

“Don't worry about it. I have a bit of time before I have to get started on lunch and dinner preparations. I was actually indulging myself with a little extra baking... I had a feeling it was going to be needed.” She smiled, pleased with the accuracy of her intuition. ” I'd love to hear more about you and the Rocky Haven.”

While they were talking, Rachyla was quietly using Craft to pack up the rest of the baking. Most of the remaining chocolate pastries and a couple of the fruit pastries the Hearth Witch set aside for Lady Odelle; she was well aware of the Queen's sweet tooth by this point. About half the rolls and wheat loaves went onto the sideboard for others who might seek out a snack or meal between official mealtimes. The rest went into a sturdy basket she kept under her counter.

“Rachyla, you are Darkness sent,” Mara said with half hooded eyes as the light flakey pastry melted in her mouth leaving sugar crystals that blended into the delicate layer of dark chocolate hidden within.  She eyed the buttered roll that appeared before her with greedy eyes.

“I’m going to end up a plump woman at this rate,” she added as she chewed on another piece of chocolate pastry.  “Women in my family go plump very easily and with such delicious treats, I won’t be able to resist.”   It didn’t stop her from reaching for the buttered roll.  Warm and fresh and the butter tasted equally fresh.   She finished off the roll and her coffee before she held out the cup again.

“Might I trouble you for some cream and sugar?  You’ve probably noticed thatI have a sweet tooth and that goes to my coffee.  Eirnan teases me that I like my cream with just a splash of color as pale as I usually drink it.”  She grinned wickedly as her eyes drifted around the kitchen.

“I wish I had some skill for cooking but sadly no.  I’ve got a mind for numbers and business, and I have a tongue for alcohol but I don’t know if that simply came as a perk of my chosen profession or through talent.   The Haven started out as a bit of a seedy and run down little drinking place but I’ve managed to turn it into something somewhat respectable.  I’ve added evening meals, and things have been good enough that I have been able to purchase the building beside it and I’m working to make it into a traveller’s inn attached to the tavern.   If I’m to do well in this venture, I’m going to need to come up with a cook that can make a decent morning meal.   Drunks in the middle of the night aren’t as picky about their meals but morning tends to clear the mind and the palette.”  She pulled the refilled cup of coffee into her hands, inhaling the scent before sipping it.

“You should stop by,  our special this month is a delightful mead that is made from a local orchard.  I went in as an investor when the owner came to me with his idea and it’s been paying off in spades!”
