This Wolf Wears a Bolero
« on: Apr 07, 19, 05:50:17 PM »
She would find her in the gardens. Winter was loosening it's grip on the land and in only a few short weeks they would be celebrating the official onset of spring. Of course, Queens and other garden-minded Ladies didn't need any sort of calendar to tell them when spring was and when the growing season had begun. Which was why Rayne didn't need any kind of tangled web to know where her Queen was. Nor did she need her little whisperers in the Court. Nor did she need that special sort of bond between her and Odelle - although she had at least two of the three to confirm her educated guess.

Swiping a couple of apples from the kitchen, she bit into one of them and chewed thoughtfully while she walked - much as she was chewing over the information she'd finished assessing this morning.

At first, she'd thought that the webs had been trying to tell her something about Odelle. Reasonable, considering she had been weaving regarding Odelle, and there was such a strong sense of 'Queen' in the whole thing that she hadn't a cause to think of anyone else. However, there were plenty of other things that didn't match up at all. Further analysis brought her to the conclusion that it was not Odelle that the vision was directly about. Or rather, Odelle wasn't the Queen the webs were honing in on. No, this Queen was younger, not yet ruling, surrounded by peacocks and twittering birds when she herself was a wolf. That alone intrigued Rayne. The Blood often presented themselves as animals in her visions and webs - Rayne supposed because of the feral, animal nature that was the Blood - but she didn't get many wolves. And most of the time, Queens presented themselves as felines. Odelle for example was almost always a clouded leopard.

But a wolf? Now, that was interesting.

It didn't take her long, either, to suss out the possibilities as she took over Jack's office to go through the records of young Queens in the Province, assuming that she was likely someone within proximity or under Odelle's jurisdiction. Or, well, possibility. The moment she'd touched the right file it was like a punch in the face, a flash of that young she-wolf, staring at her evenly through the trees.

She did more digging, and now - not only did she have some curious discoveries for her best friend and Queen - but she also had gossip. Really, it was the best of all things.

"See, there you go again," she said with a sigh as she came up behind the Queen and dropped the apple into her lap. "You're out here in the gardens and missed all of my wonderful, brilliant discoveries." She smirked, and bit into her own apple again.

Odelle had been sitting on a bench, looking over the Garden and plotting out how she would redo the garden this year.  This was a sanctuary, a lab, and a retreat all at the same time.  She was positively delighted that Spring was coming.

Why?  Because she could use the gardening time again.  Oh sure, doing random indoor things during the Winter was charming for a bit.  But it wasn't ALWAYS pleasing to be cooped up in the winter - especially in recent weeks.  Jack was busy, Kamal was being strange, and Eirnan had gone and gotten himself - very ill.  She was most displeased about that.

So she was in no rush, today, to go over everything in the Garden.  She was in no rush precisely because it meant that she had more time to gather some peace of mind and calm her emotions before returning to the fray that was ruling Rockland at times.

Of course, then there were apples.  A burst of laughter left her, and she shook her head.  "Well, you know how I am with gardens, Raynie.  As for your discoveries.."

A smirk touched her lips, and she vanished away her notes before plucking up the apple.  "What discoveries have you made?  And I swear, if you go into discoveries on Moe's backside... well.. I'm desperate for a bit of relief.  I might enjoy hearing it."

Was that exasperation?  Yes.  At this point, most in the Court knew when Odelle was feeling pent up.  Her dresses tended to be more revealing and her flirtations went through the roof.  Not that she acted on those flirtations much - but... they were there.  "Did you hear about Eirnan?  Of course you did.  Sometimes I'm fairly certain you hear things before I do.  How, I've no idea."

Rayne's smirk shifted to a grin as she took another bite of her apple and nudged Odelle over so that she could occupy some of the bench herself. She knew that Odelle was feeling restless. Between being cooped up for the winter, when all the growing things were sleeping, her males being... well... male in various ways, and the general day-to-day standstill (which somehow still managed to be chaotic) that was running a Province through the winter. Winter was the prime time for politics, since the Queen's primary focus was no longer on the land. And politics were exhausting. And, most often, incredibly boring.

Well, except for when they weren't.

"Oh yes, I heard about Prince Dumbass." She rolled her eyes. Usually, she approved of Eirnan. He was typically less of an idiot that most of the other males at Court. She supposed this was why - because he was saving up all his stupid for the opportunity to faint on his Queen. What an idiot.

But she didn't want to belabor this to Odelle too much, considering she'd already suffered quite enough for the occasion. Instead, she'd much rather turn her Queen's attention to the matter at hand.

She patted her friend's hand. "What you need, dearest Odelle," she said in such a prim, posh tone she'd perfected in her years with her aunt's coven back in Dharo, "is a little jaunt. A short trip, out to visit one of the village Queen's under your purview." Her lips quirked in a knowing smirk. "Perhaps check in on a couple of the younger in-training Queens... It would get you out of the Seat. You can stretch your legs, check in with the waking land with your Queenly stuff, get to know some of the girls that will be coming into their own soon... maybe hear some juicy gossip..." Or, well, one young Queen in particular - and one bit of tasty gossip that Rayne didn't have nearly enough details about. Yet.

"Raynie dear... you're talking about checking in on village Queens. Don't dangle a lure and expect me to not call it a lure. What have you caught on to?"  Odelle knew Rayne too well.  Rayne wasn't interested in other queens.  Rayne didn't give two shits about other queens.

Rayne cared about Odelle, and Odelle's needs.  If she was bringing up a Village Queen, or that Queen's wards, then there was reason for it.  That reason might be as flimsy as a strange dream, but there would be a reason

"What sort of gossip?  And which girl are we going to visit?" There was no 'maybe' there.  Odelle was going to play along.  And to prove it, she called for Kaleva across the warm thread that tied them together.  Her Escort was quick on the uptake.  He was in the Garden almost as soon as she gave him permission to be.

And he was quick to take her hands, to look her over as if expecting her to have hurt herself.  She supposed that was fair.  She'd gotten the males to leave her alone during these little garden trips.  She'd been intent on that.

And what did that mean? That something had come up if she was cutting her time 'alone' short.

"Well?  What do you think Kaleva?"
"You want to visit a village?"
"Well.. yes.  Frankly I'm restless, and I feel like stretching out a bit."
"... fine.  But you will listen?"
"Of course."

She fully intended to do that.  She really, really did.  That didn't mean she WOULD manage it, but she would at least try.  "Let's go. Before something else happens."

Rayne merely gave her Queen a mysterious smile - at least for the moment. She knew she wouldn't have to wait long, and then... Right on cue, there was Kaleva. She waited patiently as Queen and male went through their ritual, using the time to finish off her apple. When Odelle beckoned them to leave, Rayne was already rising, brushing her hands down her pants with a very smug sort of smile on her face. She knew that the expediency was in part to Odelle's restlessness, but it really did feel very good to be listened to with this kind of promptness and attention. Moe could learn a thing or two from his Queen.

In no time at all they were taking their seats within the carriage and Rayne knocked lightly on the partition in order to direct the driver. "To Woolslin, if you please." Then she turned to her friend with a smile. Lady Jacqlyn Hilloughby was a veteran Queen who had ruled her village for well over twenty years and would be perfectly content to do so for another twenty. Hers was, for all intents and purposes, a stable rule. Her court was often a training ground for young people looking to get into the Courts - and she'd trained a handful of Queens over her tenure that had gone on to rule other villages and a few towns in Rockland, and even in their sister Provinces. Presently, she had two Queen wards, similar in age though different in everything else.

Rayne passed Odelle the file of one of those Queens. It was a small file - with only the basic personal information regarding one Urassaya Mordoga. She was nineteen years old, wore the Tiger Eye as her Birthright, and had no documented bondeds as of yet. Her breeding and activities were, on paper, relatively unremarkable.

"There's been a bit of a stir, apparently, surrounding one of the young Queens being trained in Woolslin. Lady Hilloughby must be doing a good job keeping it quiet, otherwise I would have thought we might have heard about it without me having to go digging. As it is, I only uncovered the rumors of scandal as I was searching for the subject of an intriguing vision."

"Woolslin?  Interesting."  Odelle smiled, running her fingers over Kaleva's hand absent mindedly.  She'd worried, in the past, that he would take her absent minded petting poorly.  She'd fretted, and worried.. and then he had promptly picked up her hands and set them on his arms.  For most of my life, my Queen, my loved ones did not touch me.  Please.  Do not do the same.

And so she often did these days.  When she needed comfort, or just quiet company, Kaleva was always there.  She needed him around, she always would - but she was irritated that she had to call on him for that calm comfort so often these days.  Ever since Eirnan had collapsed, and Kamal had gotten so odd, and Jack had buried himself in his office... well Kaleva was the one that helped her remain sane.

"A stir, hrm?"  She smiled, flipping through the small little file.  Strange to have a Queen that there was so little information on.  Her eyes narrowed, fingers smoothing over that name on the file.  "Urassaya Mordoga... Mordoga... that sounds familiar."

Hell. She couldn't remember where she'd heard it.  It wasn't about the young Queen in question - she knew that.  But she could not place the name.  That was frustrating.  "So what's the rumor, then?  You wouldn't just leave it that undetailed if you didn't have more.  You are far too nice to me for you to do that."

That was not assumption.  Rayne Callis loved her.  Odelle knew that.  Odelle used that.  But Odelle also loved Rayne, so it was fair.  "And if you don't spill, I'm going to tell Moe that he has to bring me all of the chocolates for the next month."

The Black Widow tilted her head curiously as Odelle mentioned familiarity with the name - but she didn't elaborate and Rayne didn't press, at least not for the moment. First, she had to laugh at the threat that Odelle would somehow get Moe to bring only her chocolates. If the man wanted to be able to touch her at all for the next year he would know better than to take that deal, so she was unconcerned on that front - even if she were considering not telling her friend the details.

"Mhm, well, there was some kind of incident between the Lady's son and young Lady Mordoga. She attacked him." While it wasn't entirely unheard of for a Black Widow to go off on someone in a violent sort of manner, particularly when young and learning to manage their temper - such activity in Queens was highly unusual, and for good reason. Queens were protected and escorted as much for their own protection as it was for everyone else's. When a Queen went feral she almost always went for the kill - and a Queen who was willing to, and was good at killing was a creature to be very wary of indeed.

Naturally, this made Rayne think of Odelle.

She gave a sly sort of smile at her oldest friend. "They say that she was trying to blind him, or maim him in some way. Make him less attractive to the Ladies he apparently preferred over her - so is the loudest of the rumors anyway." Rayne gave Odelle a look that told her that she clearly did not think that this was the full story.

"A young Queen attacking a male of the Court she's serving her apprenticeship in is a pretty severe event, no matter how serious or not-serious it was." She hadn't been able to figure that out either, though she'd done some digging. Perhaps it wasn't all that dire an injury. Or perhaps it was important to Lady Hilloughby and her Court to make sure it didn't draw any more attention. "So it wouldn't be a bad idea to swing through and just.. check up on things. Particularly when you consider that I only discovered all of this through my investigation of a vision from one of my tangled webs." She met Odelle's eye's seriously. "A young Queen shown to me in the form of a wolf."

A wolf.  This Queen looked like a wolf?  That boded... well, actually.  It would fit with almost everyone in Odelle's Court.  Kamal was clearly predatory, as was Kaleva in a quiet way.  Jack and Eirnan were razor sharp at focusing in when they wanted to be, Rayne was a Black Widow with a temper, and Odelle?

Odelle liked to pretend that she was not as awful as she knew she was.  That there might be a Queen out there, a young Queen in Training, that was willing to attack and injure a male in the Court she was serving was telling.

Odelle wanted to know how deep that temper ran.  How far was such a Queen willing to go?  How dangerous were they, and how much of an ally might they be?

Wolves, after all, ran in packs.

"I haven't swung by Woolslin in some time; it is best to do random visits just to see how things go when they don't realize I'm coming."  Odelle smiled, sweet and without any of the sudden stretching of territorial possessiveness she was feeling on her face, before stretching her legs out a bit.  "If this Lady Mordoga is under stress, or being taken care of poorly, better to find out now before she gains her Offering and do our best to step in and fix whatever problem there might be, don't you think?"

Jacqlyn Hilloughby was a good queen.  Odelle would be very surprised if the older Queen was intentionally failing a Queen Ward - but she would not be surprised at all if the Queen was trying to keep a scandal quiet.  That was only good jurisprudence.  Still - she wanted to know what it was about.

And she wanted to lay eyes on this supposed 'wolf' herself.

Rayne flashed her Queen a broad grin as the other woman agreed with her regarding the terms of their little jaunt. Which really was a good thing, considering they were already trundling down the road.

They passed the trip with amiable chatter and other gossip - about the Court, friends, associates, and the larger sphere of their social bubble - but it wasn't too long before they arrived within the village of Woolslin. It wasn't a market day but there were still plenty of people out and about since the weather was so nice, and no one paid particular mind to their carriage as it passed through the square on the way to the Queen's Residence, which was situated off the northern side of the square.

Rayne had to appreciate the gardens that stretched from the gates all the way up to the house itself and probably around back as well. Lady Hilloughby had had many years to cultivate her gardens - to nurture them and craft them to be her own personal sanctuary. She wondered what Odelle's would look like after twenty years tending the same soil - and in some cases the same roots - after decades. She wondered if Odelle would have decades at their present home - or if when she eventually ascended the Territory Seat (because obviously she would) she would choose to move location to the traditional Seat in Portland.

There was still some time for that though. Not decades maybe, but time.

They reached the drive and the carriage pulled to a stop, followed a moment later by the door opening so that they could be let out. Rayne waited, and followed Kaleva and Odelle out, then looked up at the house with a bit of a devilish smirk. "Nice place. Now, my Lady" -she winked at her friend- "shall we?"
