Princes Cannot Be Defeated by "The Sniffles"

Spring was creeping up on them, he could feel it. Some days were still bitter cold and threatened snow - and others were tepid enough that when the sun was shining, there was no mistaking the approaching shift in seasons. Already, the Province Court was making plans for it. Of course - they started those plans months ago, shortly after Winsol and the breaking into the new year, with the intention of being prepared. Then things got busy and those plans sat at the corner of Eirnan's desk, utterly untouched, for well over a month and a half, before he rediscovered them. Eirnan was far too dignified to call the resulting rush "floundering", but there you have it.

Today, Eirnan was to be bringing the outline for the first round of spring tours to Odelle for discussion and approval. He had with him files of various statistics to back up his proposal, including crop yields and soil health throughout the Province as well as the distribution of Queens, their ranks, and how it all correlated into his assessment for which areas needed to be inspected and gifted first, and potentially could use more than one visit by Odelle herself.

Eirnan had kept young Petre and the other statisticians quite busy these past few weeks. So it was understandable that he was a little bit tired. But that's all it was. He was just a little bit drained from the work. His temperature always ran a bit high as a boy, hadn't it? And the pallor of his skin was invariably caused because he'd been cooped up in his office so much lately.

He was not ill. Eirnan didn't get sick, thank you very much.

Brushing away these annoying observations, the Green Jeweled Prince smoothed a (shaky) hand down his vest and headed to Odelle's office, pointedly ignoring the throbbing at the base of his scull. Once he reached the door he knocked politely and entered as the door swung open for him, giving a polite bow of his head to his Queen (and dear friend) in the process. He shut the door behind him, then moved toward her desk, calling in the copies of his findings.

"Good Morning, Lady," he greeted, flashing her a warm (but wane) smile. "The weather seems to be turning in our favor, it looks like it might actually start staying warm here in the next few weeks."

Odelle had put on the work trousers and a loose blouse today.  She had every intention of getting out into the garden and digging through the beds now that things were getting 'possible' to work with.  She was excited.  The guards had made sure everything was secure, she could go out and pretend to be on 'her own', and she would be perfectly safe the entire time.

Of course, first she had to finish up her appointments and paperwork.  With the weather they'd been having, when she was done with the garden she'd likely have to take a while to clean herself up.  Something she was looking forward to, actually, because she did really enjoy bathtimes and always had.

Of course, Eirnan was one of her appointments, and she didn't mind putting everything off for him.  They didn't get to see each other often enough in the last few weeks, and she missed him.  But when he came into her office?  Well, she found her happiness a little diminished by concern.

"Good morning, Eirnan."  Odelle felt a frown tugging at her lips, but she let him finish his sentence.  Was he trying to distract her from the fact that he obviously felt unwell?  Was he trying to pretend that he did not feel unwell?  It didn't matter.  What mattered was that he looked terrible.

"Eirnan... are you alright?  You look... pale."  Actually he looked like he was about to throw up.  But Eirnan never looked like he was ill.  She'd seen him drunk enough to imply he would be ready to be ill, and he hadn't looked like this.  "Sit.  Please."

Eirnan wrinkled his nose and sighed at the frown he saw on his Queen's face and the concern he could hear in her voice as she questioned his health, then felt frustrated with himself for the break in his composition to do so but it was too late to take it back so instead just resolved to prove it to her that he was, in fact, perfectly fine.

"No need to worry, Lady," he confirmed with a smile. It felt like his muscles were doing all the right things, but in fact Odelle would see that his lips barely even twitched. The only reason that Eirnan thought he was giving a proper expression because it took that much effort to get such a significantly inferior result. He ignored the face that the throbbing ache at the base of his scull had now expanded to encompass the entire back of his head. His ears felt thick and his knees almost like they were constructed of framing and bolts - and the screws had all come just a little bit too loose. It was all a bit disconcerting - but pushed on.

He held up his files. "I've brought the files for the..." he paused and frowned, considering her. Odelle hadn't always had a twin, had she?

It was at that moment that the screws keeping his tin-man knees together finally tumbled out and he stumbled. He barely caught himself on the chair as the world spun about and he really needed to make sure he talked to Kamal about how aggressively the daisies in that painting jeered at Odelle's guests - it was bound to make people uncomfortable.

What grip he had on the chair faltered just after he made this decision and he hit the floor with a very loud and ungraceful thud.

Eirnan's lips didn't move much.  In fact, his words sounded - odd.  That was what had her raising to her feet.  That was what had her coming around the desk - just in time as it turned out - in order to catch him and keep him from crashing his head into things on the way down.  She hadn't entirely expected the crash.

Looking back, she supposed she should have tried to 'catch' him in Craft.  She'd been too surprised.

His files had spread out around the floor but she paid that no mind.  Instead she reached out - admittedly with a bit of panic - and called for Lucy. Lucy!  Eirnan has collapsed!  His breathing is quick.  And .. he's so clammy.

She didn't like it.  But she swept her fingers against his head anyways.  She touched his throat, feeling the pulse of his heartbeat and the rush of his quick breath over her hand.  This wasn't good.  He was clearly ill - clearly weakened - and she had no idea why.  Oh no.

What if he had been poisoned?  Someone tried to poison her after all!  Her hands shook at the thought and she carefully pulled his head up into her lap.  A little elevation might help prevent him from vomiting and choking on it.  And .. if she were honest... she just wanted to feel him in her arms.

"Eirnan, you stubborn idiot.. how could you let this go so far?"

Clearly he had been ill for a while.  This sort of thing didn't just pop up out of nowhere... did it?  Of course not!  Or at least, she was fairly certain it didn't.  Unless he's been poisoned...
no.  NO.  We're not thinking that way.

It felt like he was under water. Warm, fuzzy, hazy water that still allowed him to breathe - but only partly. Distantly, like she was in another room, he could hear Odelle saying something. Talking to him? But whatever she was saying just wasn't coming together as decipherable words and sentences in his head. He knew that he should understand what she was saying - but it was like trying to listen to a specific conversation at a crowded dinner where everyone was talking at once, and the person you wanted to listen to was on the absolute opposite end of the table.

Except, of course, there was no one else in the room and Odelle was right here in front of him.

Wait, no. Beside him?

Eirnen frowned and shifted, turning his head into the touch of her hand. Her scent was all around him and it was a good scent. It was the right scent. The scent of Queen and Odelle and friend and home.

"Hn... f'n..." He tried to shake his head - but had the oddest sensation that he was doing it in slow motion when he meant to move normally. He tried to open his eyes but found that he lacked the energy to do even that. This - his sluggishly fatigued brain decided - was getting ridiculous. Gritting his teeth, he tried again and found he was able to flutter his eyes partway open to look up at Odelle. She was blurry. Why was she blurry? Did she need glasses..? No, that didn't quite make sense.

"Oh.. O..delle..." He cleared his throat and tried to put more strength into the sound. "Fine. I'm... f..ine." He lifted a hand to wave away her worries and it flopped unhelpfully across his stomach. "D'nt.. w'ry..."

With the end of winter, Lucy knew that she needed to start planning her garden. There were some changes she wanted to make from the year before, and so she was walking among the relatively short rows of dirt that would eventually have little sprouts. Some of the changes were plant placement, but she also wanted to adjust the amounts of a couple of them. Some had gone to waste last year, and some she could have used more of. They made good neighbors for each other, so it was easy enough to make the change.

Lucy had a paper clipped to a board in her hands as she took slow steps, drawing out her idea with tiny, neatly written labels for the future garden rows. She was just finishing a note when Odelle's voice broke into her thoughts. The pen left a line on the page as she whipped around, automatically facing the direction to where Odelle was. Lucy didn't keep tabs on everyone in the Queen's residence; that would be a bit much. But she did do her best to know where the Queen was as much as she could.

*He's...* Lucy stopped herself from repeating what Odelle said as her brain caught up with the brief description of symptoms. *I'll be right there.* Lucy dashed back into the door to the healing room, tossing the board onto a counter with a clatter that startled her escort.

"Come on," she told him, rifling through a cupboard for a few supplies that weren't in the case that she carried in her psychic cupboard. On the way through the halls, she quickly got her escort up to speed and he opened the door for her when they arrived at Odelle's office.

She dropped to her knees next to them and reached for Odelle's hand to give her a reassuring squeeze. Then she gently grasped Eirnan's wrist to check his pulse.

"How long have you been feeling like this?" Lucy asked Eirnan, gently feeling his cheeks and forehead to see how warm he was. She had a feeling she knew what this was. She had treated a few other sick court members already, but none of them had tried to work through their illnesses, which she guessed Eirnan had since he was in Odelle's office rather than his bed or Lucy's healing room. It meant that none of the others were quite in this state. Still, she couldn't just assume.

"What are your other symptoms?" Lucy glanced at Odelle as well, to see what she knew, but the questions were partly to learn about whatever he had, and also to assess his breathing and clarity so she wanted Eirnan to answer as well. She called in her box of supplies and glanced up at her escort. He nodded at her and left the room to get the water she needed.

Oh thank goodness.  Lucy was coming.  That meant she would be here with all haste - because Odelle knew that sound.  She knew that tone.  Lucy feared no one when it came to grumpy patients - a good thing considering Odelle herself was a terrible patient - and then she turned her attention back to Eirnan.  She was still stroking her fingers along his hairline, playing with his face to keep him awake.

Not that him awake seemed to make any sense.  He could barely say her name, let alone everything else.  But she did catch the attempt at 'I'm Fine'.

And it made her eyes narrow.  "If you weren't already laid out on the floor, Eirnan Connoly, I might be tempted to lay you out on the floor myself.  You should never let yourself get so ill and not say anything, silly."  He's ill.  Not poisoned.  Ill, not poisoned.  She just had to keep repeating that to herself.

Maybe she'd even believe it if she thought it often enough.  But what if he was poisoned?

If someone had poisoned her Eirnan, there was not a single soul in all of Little Terreille that would be spared from her wrath.  Or any other Territory, for that matter.  She'd hunt them to the ends of the Realm, consequences be damned.

There.  THERE was Lucy.  At last.  Odelle's temper prickled, but she forced herself to take three breaths before attempting to speak.  "He entered the office pale and shaky.  It didn't take long at all for him to start to fall, Lucy."  Was that a bite in her voice?  Yes.

Odelle never had handled any of her males feeling ill well.  When Jack had the flu as a younger man, she'd thought she'd go mad worrying over him.  The Healer had banished her from the room, and she'd never been quite so furious up to that point. Fortunately her parents had distracted her with new gardening opportunities.

Unfortunately for the Court, that would be harder to pull off now.

Has he been poisoned, Lucy?  For the sake of many lives, she hoped not. Has someone tried for us again?

There was a peculiar little fairy leaning over him now, and Eirnan found that he was a little bit hurt that Odelle had never told him that they were on terms with the creatures - then he realized that it was Lady Benton. There was half a moment when he was hurt instead that Lucy had never confided in him that she was, in fact, a fairy - and then he was able to pull himself together enough to be assured that no, Lady Lucy Benton, their Court Healer, was in fact not a fairy.

Thoughts of fairies did make him think of home, though - and for just a moment he longed for it, missed the rolling green hills and the songs and the tales and the magic...

'How long have you been feeling like this? What are your other symptoms?'

Eirnan blinked up at Lucy, focusing on her - and on the here and now - and offered her what was meant to be a reassuring smile. "Just.. a little tired.. I think," he said. "Bout of the sniffles, that's.. that's all." He had to catch his breath several times as he spoke, as if just talking was exhausting - which was fairly frustrating because he felt like before his little stumble he'd been holding himself together just fine. Then he trips and suddenly he barely had the energy to talk? Ridiculous! Or, of course, there was the possibility that his body had just had enough - but Eirnan wasn't about to consider that right now.

"I think I'll.. be alright. If ye migh' just.. help me up." He shifted to push himself up. "Havn'a had the sniffles in a long mile..." Exhaustion pulled the old accent out of him but he didn't seem to notice at this particular juncture, focused as he was on leveraging himself up from his Queen's lap. He still needed to give her his reports, after all - and it would be difficult to do them laying down, not that he didn't love the nearness of her.

Odelle’s terseness rolled easily off of Lucy’s back. She was used to worried friends and family members and their reactions to waiting on her to help. Queens and their bonded males also fell under this category.

*No, I don’t think he has been poisoned,* Lucy assured Odelle. She could see how the symptoms and seemingly quick onset could be worrying, though, given the court’s history with poisoning. Turning her attention to Eirnan, then, Lucy listened both to the words he spoke and to his breathing and tone.

She managed not to roll her eyes as Eirnan claimed that this was just the sniffles. She did, however, turn to give Odelle a flat, unimpressed look before returning her gaze to the Prince in front of her.

“I think this is a bit more than the sniffles,” Lucy informed him. “There seems to be a run of this kind of illness lately. The flu, basically.” His breathing while talking wasn’t great, but that was a familiar symptom. Then her escort returned with the water and Lucy set about making a little brew that would ease any pain he was feeling from his illness. Sometimes she found that the difficulty breathing was accompanied by chest pain.

“Alright,” Lucy set the cup down on top of her box of supplies. “This brew will help with your breathing as well as that bit of a fever I think you have.” She glanced up at Odelle. “If you’ll help him stay sitting up?” Normally she would have asked her escort to do this, but she had a feeling that doing something to help would make Odelle feel a bit better.

Once she was sure that Eirnan was not going to list to the side or anything, Lucy held the cup up to him, keeping her hold on it in case he was too shaky to take it from her on his own.

“Once you drink that, we can see about getting you back to bed.” Then she and Odelle would have to convince him to actually get some rest.
