Making time
« on: Feb 27, 19, 12:39:49 PM »
The days had been busier than Hayden was used to, of late. She'd grown accustomed to having a significant portion of each day to bum around and do as she liked, but between her quasi-secret lessons with Liese and the projects Amerys was pulling her in to help on, things had felt pretty non-stop for a few weeks, now. She realized this only when she had a moment to breathe, this sunny afternoon after leaving one of the planning meetings for one of the trade schools Amerys was having built. She'd departed from the court folk citing some personal business to attend to, when really she was just aching for some time by herself. She still had matters to tend to today: a lunch appointment awaited her in less than an hour, in fact. Still, even just a walk back towards Tarn Nataniel was doing wonders for her. The street was busy with midday happenings, people moving about, all tending to their lives and their business. Hayden enjoyed slipping into the stream of them, disappearing among the mass of people who made up the Territory. There had been moments recently in which she had nearly convinced herself of the uselessness of the Lord Black charade. Sure, revealing herself would likely change things, but would it break anything? Wouldn't it be worth it to leave behind all the deception?

But then there were moments like this, when she could glide anonymously alongside everyone else in the Territory with no one casting her a second glance. It reminded her how much she appreciated being able to slip in and out of places without drawing notice, and how much freedom she had now because most people didn't miss her when she wasn't around. She was just another courtier to everyone but the small circle of people in the know, and it took moments like this to remind her of what a luxury that was.

Blessed anonymity or no, however, she promptly forgot to be any kind of low-key when she recognized a certain jacket and a certain stride moving down the walk a ways ahead of her. The grin that splashed itself across her face was brilliant and instant, and she quickened her pace to move through the passerbys at a run.

"Lysander!" was the only warning the former pirate got before he was downright assaulted by a high-speed hug, whether he was ready for it or not. Had she really let it slip into weeks since she'd visited him last? How criminal that suddenly felt....

Lysander really did love beautiful days. He preferred beautiful days on the bow of a ship - but there was nothing inherently wrong with enjoying one on dry land so he wasn't going to let himself get all mopey and wistful about how he maybe would have changed things to make them just that little bit better. The sun was shining, it was warm on his face, and the breeze was teasing him with some mystery delight that had to be coming from some street vendor down the way. He wasn't sure which one it was, or even what the particular food item was - but he was going to find it and get it into his belly straightaway.

Or at least, that had been his mission as he made his way down the walk north through the city. Sure, sure, he had plenty of actual things that needed to get done todoay while he was about, but first: yummies.

Well - Second: yummies, because First had just been claimed by a particular little witch who'd just launched a surprise attack at him from behind. He'd only barely heard her squealed pronouncement and had just started to turn, so when she hit him his weight was rather misplaced and he was set instantly off balance. Unless Hayden was particlarly agile and warrior-like in her ability to catch herself, she was probably going to end up going down with him. But never fear! Lysander's reflexes were a little bit better than his unceremonious tumble would mayhap lead others to believe. If Hayden wasn't able to catch herself, Ly would pivot in time to catch her, arms wrapped around her as he fell hard onto the pavement.

Most of hie weight landed on his ass and he groaned through a breathless laugh. Then, whether he already had her conveniently in his arms or had to get up in order to do so, Ly wrapped his arms around the slender witch with a grin and hugged her with the temperment of a true-blue cuddle.

"Hay-dy Pants!" he exclaimed in matching excitement as he hugged her, then kissed both of her cheeks. "How ARE you?"

"Ah, no!" Hayden squeaked, caught off guard with just how hard she'd collided with the warlord. He started to tumble and she lost her balance while trying to help him stay upright. The both of them went down, and despite how genuinely Hayden regretted having caused the tumble, she couldn't entirely keep the laugh out of her voice while she apologized. Clearly Lysander wasn't offended, if his hug and kisses to her cheeks was any indication. Still, Hayden scrambled to get to her feet and help pull him upright as well in short order. She looked him over and helped to set his jacket aright.

"Overly excitable, apparently," she cheerily lamented, when he asked how she was. She brushed herself off and laughed again, cheeks ruddy from the tumble and the humor. "Are you alright?" she asked, though she stopped short of letting herself apologize for a FOURTH time by biting her lip. "I was just surprised to see you and I got excited, and--" she started to ramble, but stopped herself and laughed again, shaking her head and opting to just hug him again instead of explaining further.

"I'm sorry, I've been meaning to stop by the shop," she said, before releasing him. "There's just been so much going on. I've missed you," she told him quickly, a hand landing on his arm and resting there. "How've you been? When you're not being accosted on the street, I mean," she said, a grin lighting her face.

Lysander didn't bother counting how many times Hayden apologized during their little greet-'n-tumble, mostly out of a courtesy to her considering if he had kept track it would have only been so that he'd be able to tease her about it later. As it were, Ly just grinned and chuckled and hugged her back.

"Oh shush, don't worry about it. Yes, yes, I'm fine fine fine thank you." He winked. "Also, fine - if I do say so myself." He fluffed his curls to make his point then slung an arm around her shoulders, getting them walking down the street. "I'm off to acquire some nibbles at the moment and you, my fair and fetching friend, are going to join me." After all, she was utterly correct in the assessment that it had been far too long since they'd sat down together. Between her being so busy with her whole shtick up at the Territory Court and him being generally off-the-cuff with his own agenda, an unacceptable amount of time had passed since they'd actually had the chance to do more than go "OKAY SORRY NEXT TIME BYE".

"As for what I've been up to?" He hummed in thought and smiled mysteriously at her, wiggling his eyebrows. "You tell me yours and I'll tell you mine, how about that. You need to give me an update on Prince BreckenYummy and I may or may not have details of my own scrumptious sort of here-again, gone-again flavor that's at least temporarily ended the unfortunate little drought I was in last time we had a proper gossip-session." Judge him, he didn't care, he was a slut for gossip.

With a gentle bump of his hip against hers, he turned them around a corner and toward a cozy little place they'd enjoyed before that had outdoor seating. After all, he had no intention of wasting this perfect, perfect day.

Though Hayden proposed no objections to Lysander draping an arm around her and resuming his trajectory down the street, his assertion that she'd join him for a meal managed to paint a touch of hesitance on her face.

"Actually, I was headed--" she started to say, regret heavily tinting the words that she clearly didn't want to say. But she looked back to Lysander mid-thought, and was struck with a thread of impudence that assured her she could rearrange other things in her schedule, if she needed to. This was important, right now. So she paused, lips pursed, and considered Lysander for a moment before striking a compromise with her own sense of responsibility.

"No, you know what? That can wait. For a moment, at least. I can't stay long, but I can at least eat something, and hear about what you've been up to."

Lysander's reference to Prince Breckenyummy struck an unusually tight nerve with the witch, who closed her eyes and groaned softly, a hand raising to partially hide a face that hinted at embarrassment.

"Gods, you're never going to believe what's happened, 'sander." She dropped her hand, and let herself be steered towards the array of tables adorning the front of a nearby cafe. "Though I'm not surprised at all to hear that you've had adventures of your own," she said, casting a teasing smile towards him. She settled into a seat across a table from him, and waited with commendable patience while the server greeted them, took their drink orders, and went away.

"You first," she demanded, and the cheeky smile that followed the words suggested she wasn't about to easily moved.

Hayden here was certainly one lucky ducky, because thanks to her swift redaction she would only end up having to suffer a few seconds of his kicked-puppy pout. Instead, she was treated to a bright, adoring smile and a firm kiss on the cheek. Lysander Kane had no shame and he'd been fully prepared to pout and sigh and maybe even get a bit teary-eyed in the attempt to sway her toward accepting his company a bit longer if she had tried to proclaim having duties elsewhere. Surely it wasn't anything that couldn't wait, right? And even if it was -- well, they could just say that there'd been... some kind of traffic incident involving a couple of wagons filled with several crates of rabid chickens or something. Okay, maybe not rabid chickens. Normal chickens then - they were vicious enough.

They were spared this, though, because Hayden wisely acknowledged that it was far better to chat with him than do something likely work-related.

He twinkled at her merrily, a little dance in his step as he brought them to the little restaurant and right to one of his preferred tables. He made a show of getting her seated and fluttered his eyelashes playfully at an amused server who seemed to recognize him as a regular. Once this bit of drama was done he settled himself across from the witch and plopped his chin in his hands.

"Oh meeeee?" He hummed, pretended to think, then grinned. "Okay! Well I'm not sure there's a whole bunch to say other than I have a frequently infrequent bedmate... who is also my floormate... and countermate..." He flashed a lascivious grin. "And there were certainly a couple instances against the wall." There were benefits to having an irregularly regular affair with a roguish Warlord Prince. He'd never need to read another trashy smut novel again! Honestly, he'd probably make a decent killing off of writing up their little tumbles as one-shot erotic adventures.

Perhaps he would...

For now, though, he just grinned at Hayden. "He's been around a few times now, keeps me occupied for a few days" -insert appropriately devilish eyebrow-wiggle- "then vanishes to get up to no good. Oh! Did I mention that we first met when he broke into my shop? That encounter ended disappointingly clothed, granted I wasn't too happy with him at the time anyway." He waved a hand in dismissal. "We made up for it the next time though."

Lysander's good cheer and his playfulness were a welcome change from the dour moods into which Hayden tended to descend while handling formal affairs. She'd been working quite a bit lately, though part of her increase in busy-ness had been her rather clandestine efforts to train under Lady Skovgaard. Things there were progressing more slowly than Hayden liked, but she was trying to bear in mind that such things were a process. Becoming a Healer wasn't something she'd decided to do overnight, and she wouldn't accomplish the change overnight either. In her more enlightened moments, she understood that the patience it required was a good lesson for her in itself. She'd gotten entirely too accustomed to being able to just move obstacles out of her way by force, perhaps. That wouldn't work here.

Her studies with the kind-faced Rihlander were just one more thing she hadn't yet caught Lysander up on, she realized. This appetizer-and-run that she was indulging in was going to be nowhere near enough time to spend with the warlord; she needed to make a proper date with him to hang out for an evening or an afternoon at least. But she set those thoughts aside to focus on Lysander when he began to speak of his recent conquests. The sass in the way Lysander grinned while speaking of his latest lover summoned an answering grin from the witch, and she leaned forward on her folded arms to watch him, almost giddy on his behalf.

"Good grief, that sounds exhausting," she teased, then reached across the table to give his arm a light shove to prompt him to speak further.  "Come on, give us a name. How'd you meet him?" Some of the mirth gave way to a bit of confusion and concern when it came out how they'd met.

"Wait, what? He's a thief?" she asked, sitting up to ponder the matter. She seemed disappointed by that revelation, but was waiting to hear Lysander's explanation.

"That's right. Well, I'm sure he's more than just a thief." Lysander shrugged. "Much too clever and tricksy to be a run-of-the-mill burglar." There was a distinct note of pride in his voice that belied the very real fact that though Lysander Kane had supposedly hung up his pirate's cap for that of a mild-mannered shopkeeper, he hadn't forsaken his past entirely. Oh no, because his delicious here-again, gone-again, strumpet was more than just a common criminal, he was something more mysterious and lucrative than that. Lysander had zero proof of this, of course, but he liked to think he had good instincts.

There was a brief interlude when a server came by and Lysander flirted them into a tray of appetizers to share, an iced tea (with two lemons) for himself, and whatever Hayden wished to sip during their spontaneous chatter session. Once the blushing maid had flounced away to fetch their drinks, Lysander turned back to Hayden with a broad grin and nudged her calf with his toe.

"Oh, and he calls himself Jacobi." This was offered in an after-the-fact sort of manner. He didn't add that this was only one of what was sure to be many names, or that one of the other ones he seemed to be known by in more nefarious circles was "Oz" -- considering Ly had learned that name from another thief who was a mutual friend. When asked, he'd insisted to be called Jacobi, though Ly could admit at least privately that Oz sounded way more intriguing and he found himself slipping mentally relatively frequently when reminiscing about hands and mouths and... well.

"He hasn't actually stolen anything from me though, oddly enough. At least if he has, it hasn't been anything remotely significant enough for me to notice." His tone was chipper as he added this on, both as a way to reassure his far more straight-laced friend and just to muse on the novelty of it. "Not even that first time. Oh, he'd intended to. We got a bit snappy and snarly with each other. Probably not my wisest moment, to be honest," he admitted with a selfdeprecating chuckle, "him being a Warlord Prince and all - but it's all seemed to work out in my favor anyway."

As such, he didn't worry about it.

"Been a little bit since I've seen him last, so I kinda hope he pops up again soon. He always spices up my evenings. Or afternoons. Or bizarre hours of the morning. I'm not sure the man has a set sleeping schedule. He should be aware of that, erratic sleeping habits can be hell on you, especially if you're a traveler." He looked over as the server returned - already in possession of their beverages and their appetizers.

"Ah! Brilliant. You are perfection and a peach."
