Listen, About Jack...
« on: Feb 19, 19, 02:03:32 PM »
Kamal had been contracted to Odelle for some time now. He has observed the many mannerisms of the Court and the courtiers who reside within it. Who they are, what they liked, how they operated (to some degree). It was his job as Master of the Guard to defend them all. To be the hoplite ready to jump to their defense. That required working knowledge of their lives that they might not share in open company. It made him observant of their attitudes toward others, where they went, what they did and how they related to other members of the Court and courtiers in other courts.

It was Kamal's belief, that the court Odelle operated was horribly structured and whose occupants were in positions where their talents were under-utilized. More importantly the arrangement of the Court also kept obvious wants and desires - ones he was fully aware were reciprocated - from finding release in acquisition. Such a state of affairs was toxic, not just for Odelle but for everyone in the Court. And is what landed his sights on the primary culprit. Jack.

The Steward was a disgrace to the gender and his Caste. He had seen the way Jack eyes Odelle and she him. He has even smelled it, passing by various rooms keeping tabs on security. Love. It was more than simply a heartbonded male entreating with the Queen of his soul, not with Jack. It was more so. A subtle elegance that didn't require a Queen's nature to smooth the edges of his temper. His feelings did it on his own. It continued to surprise the Warlord Prince that Jack didn't man up and put a ring on it, ask to be Consort and be done with it.

Yet there he was. Toiling in the Stewardship continuing to bat eyes and knock bedframes with a woman he desired but did not have the balls to try and claim. He pitied the man.

Naturally that meant that Jack required a better male perspective to move things along. Notably one with a spine. Kamal was happy to oblige once he realized Jack needed such help. No one else, obviously, had the spine to do so.

Today he came into his office ready to go over the reports of criminality of the Province supplied by the District Courts and also beginning to put his plan in motion. He sent one of the court guards to find the Court Seer and bring her to his office to discuss 'matters of importance'. If anyone were to help weave his plan to fruition it would be the Black Widow. He would have to see how she received his considerations on Jack's unfortunate predicament.

He sat down at his desk and quietly began to peruse the reports waiting for Lady Callis's presence. When she was announced Kamal looked up, set the papers down on the desk and gestured inside. "Lady Callis. Thank you for answering promptly. Please have a seat. Be comfortable."

When Rayne Callis arrived in Kamal's office, it was with the intent to murder someone. Oh, she looked very cool and calm - but anyone who had spent more than a week in her general vicinity would know better than to get in her way with such a hard, icy look in her eyes. Even if she hadn't been walking with concentrated purpose, leaving a vague chill in her wake, it would have been incredibly ill-advised cross her. Rayne Callis was a Sapphire Jeweled Black Widow, and one did not just impose or impede or interrupt a woman like her and expect to come out of the altercation without suffering some sort of regrettable consequence. Considering who and what she was, those consequences ranged from a terrifying tongue-lashing to, you know, death or the complete obliteration of your Chalice.

So when Kamal summoned Rayne to his office in order to discuss 'matters of importance', and the witch stalked her way down the long corridor to his office with such cold focused purpose - anyone who happened to be in the area promptly made themselves scarce. This included, but was not limited to, the messenger who'd told her of the summons, a maid cleaning in the hall, and at least two other males of the First Circle.

The cause for her mood, contrary to what most would whisper about throughout the day, was not due to an inherent dislike of the Warlord Prince who'd summoned her. (Nor was it that she had been summoned at all.) Rayne went back and forth between intensely disliking the Master of the Guard and intensely approving of him. It tended to be one or the other with nothing in between, and she rather liked to think that he held the same sort of opinion of herself. It tended to be the way of things between her and Warlord Princes, no matter their flavor. Either they hated each other and were prone to rising to the Edge (in one form or another) just by being in proximity, or they played this dance of temper and agreement depending on if they had something to agree on. It certainly made her relationship with Merihem incredibly interesting.

So, no, it wasn't Prince Kapoor himself that has stroked her ire - though it really wasn't anger, not exactly, that possessed her. It was something darker than that, something bloodthirsty. When the message given to her had said 'matters of import', coming from the Master of the Guard and to the Court Seer, Rayne had assumed (on a very logical route really) that something had happened or been discovered. Some kind of threat to Odelle. And that made her want to kill things.

Rayne entered the room and shut the door behind her, taking a seat across from the Warlord Prince's desk, her gaze sharp and posture ready.

"What's happened?"

Rayne Callis was one of the few people in Odelle's Court that Kamal did not know much of. Not on account of her character, a lack of interest on Kamal's part or issues of incompetence. It was the nature of Black Widows to hide, and thrived in the aspects of life that required things to be hidden. Brains being one. The nature of their work another. Rayne was like every other Black Widow in this regard. A great many things about her, unless she deemed it necessary or opened herself to others, remained hidden. No amount of watching or keeping tabs could reveal those things about her.

Her temper was just part of her character. Kamal could respect it. One didn't live with poison in their veins and not be a complete ray of sunshine. So when she entered his office and sat down with a glare that could chill stone Kamal leaned forward to meet it.

"It has come to my attention that there is a threat to the general Court's welfare that must be addressed and due to it's cause cannot be handled in the usual manner to which threats are quelled. Hence why I called for you."

He summoned some wine, poured himself some and then nudged a glass and the decanter over to her. "Which brings me to the person causing this subtle threat. Our dear Steward, Jack."

"I am sure you know given your keen skills of perception that Lord Bolton and Lady Ackley are practically gnawing at the roots of their nails staring at each other from across the halls. Both desire more of their paramour than the other seems willing to give. While I admire the game of cat and mouse I believe the current state of affairs has lasted long beyond what is healthy. Repression does not age well and the last thing I desire is for that repression to unleash undesireably and bring permanent and lasting harm to the Court. As Jack is impotent in this affair I believe he is waiting for more confident minds to prevail. This, is where I would like you to assist me in rectifying this internal dilemma Lady Callis."

"It is my belief that the optimal arrangement of this Court and fulfilling the satisfactions of those involved requires that Jack take his proper place as First Consort. He has the leadership skills and will gain the affection and lifebond that he desires from his paramour, I am sure Odelle will benefit much the same. With him in his proper place the discord they practically level on anyone they are in vicinity with will diminish and the threat abated."

"I am curious as to what you think about the present...predicament and it's circumstances."

'It has come to my attention that there is a threat to the general Court's welfare...'

Rayne only nodded, all of her focused honed - sharp and deadly in its intensity - on what the Master of the Guard was telling her. There was a threat, and it needed to be quelled. But, apparently, it wasn't something that could be approached in a conventional way.

And, apparently, that problem... was Jack.

Rayne blinked, then sighed softly and relaxed. Really? Call her up here, get her worked up and ready to kill something, because of Jack's well-known idiocy? Not that she didn't have affection for the man - she really did - but seriously, the entire Court was aware of the thing between Queen and Steward. It was a known issue, and one that many of the Court giggled about with neither party was in earshot. Not in a ridiculing way, but more of an exasperated one - and Rayne didn't slap them down because, well, she shared a similar sentiment.

A bit frustrated with the man across from her, Rayne nevertheless accepted the decanter and poured herself some wine.

"You could have opened with 'Jack is an idiot, let's fix it." you know," she chided around her glass before taking a sip and adjusting her seat to fold one leg over the other. "You aren't wrong, it can certainly be considered a matter of Court security, but you had me ready to kill someone - especially with everythign that happened with Odelle last year." She shook her head and sighed, but decided not to dwell and instead move forward with the purpose of the meeting.

So she took another sip of wine and nodded before setting her glass down.

"But you're right, Jack should be the Consort - or even First Escort if they didn't want to involve sex in the contract and keep that bit purly on a personal level. Jack does good work as the Steward, but he's leader of the males of this Court. Kaleva is a good man, and a fine escort, but it seems more like he's got the job because Jack wanted to play around with his numbers instead." She sniffed, disapproving. "Which, might I say, he hasn't been doing as much lately because he's been so obsessed with keeping close to Odelle. I'm glad they've finally solidified their relative exclusivity, but really now."

Rayne picked up her glass again and siwrled it, then considered the man across from her. "Have you spoken to Odelle about this at all?"

"I consider the current state of affairs particularly dangerous, hence the threat." He adjusted himself. "Jack's lack of a spine is dangerous, not just to himself but the other males of Odelle's Court and even beyond that. Should he continue his puppy dog routine and continue to restrain himself he will in some form try to keep himself as number one. Up to and including alienating everyone and anyone that might threaten his position in Odelle's heart. Lovers first. Then friends. Anyone bound to Odelle will be an enemy to him and the Court will start to crack under the strain." He finished his wine glass. "At first I considered the game cute, some courting play. It has gone on long enough."

As Rayne fleshed out her opinions of the dear Steward the result made Kamal literally fume. He thought he didn't hear her correctly. That the only reason why Jack isn't a Consort, or anything else that would solve this whole crisis, is because Jack likes numbers?

Rage bubbled up in his blood and with a hand slapped his wine glass off the desk, across the office and shattered to pile shards on the floor. "The pitiful sack of flesh!" He hissed. "To think Bolton was having some sort of courage crisis! No. It's because he believes that between a ledger and Odelle, the ledger wins?" He rose from his seat and hurled the chair across the room this time, missing Rayne's head and the wood shattered into splinters. To think that someone would place his Queen in such a pathetic stratum where numbers were more important than her?? And DARE to say that he 'loved' her??

If Odelle, or anyone for that matter, looked at Kamal the way Odelle googly-eyes Jack from afar there would be no hesitation, no decision to be made. He would take her and do whatever it took to be at her side. Kamal was no Consort, but he would force himself to be if that was the price needed to pay, a pittance compared to the bounty on the other side. Because if someone looked at him like that? Was worthy of such a price.

Jack, apparently, disagreed. Odelle wasn't worth the trouble. He would rupture the stability of the Court, threaten Odelle and others with his indecision based solely on the fact that Odelle, and being at her side, didn't equate to a math problem. What a pathetic Warlord. The taint of the Light Jewels must be clouding his judgement - anchored to the firmament as they are. Reason making him blind in one eye to the point he risked everyone.

There was only solution. His instincts flared with a simple purr in his thoughts.

Kill Jack Bolton

"Odelle neither deserves the curr or the risk he carries." He stood up to full height. He cracked his knuckles, and his eyes visibly sharpened to razor-clarity as heat began to bubble off of him like a furnace. "He doesn't deserve Odelle, nor a place in this Court. Let him count his numbers in the Abyss." His purpose clear, he made for the door.

Jack would die. Odelle may hate him for it, but she will come around. Unlike Jack's precious numbers, Odelle had a heart. She would understand.

Rayne sighed. Of course Kamal would get all uppity and ragemonster-y. He was a Warlord Prince, after all. Their immediate response to anything surprising or unpleasant was to kill it until it was dead, then blast it with a power bolt, then kick it in the dick, then kill it again just in case. Not that she didn't understand the sentiment, but really - it was all so... dramatic.

In spite of her exasperation, however, Rayne still took that rage very seriously. After all, he was a Warlord Prince, and if he truly hit the Edge over this there were going to be bodies.

And that, more than anything else that the man might have said about his opinion on the matter, actually was a matter of Court security. And if Kamal thought the situation was something that disrespected his Queen - he probably wouldn't be the only one. Moreover, it could also weaken Odelle's appearance from an outside perspective. Something had to be done.

First and foremost, however, she needed to stop Kamal from actually killing Jack.

It was a fine bit of control she exercised, swallowing her snarl when that CHAIR almost DECAPITATED her - but she managed it, ducking with nothing more than a sharp squeak of alarm. Then she took in a deep breath and pushed herself slowly to her feet. "Prince, please, wait just a moment." She said please to get his attention and hopefully get a double-hit of surprise and the nudge toward the aggressively nurturing side of a Warlord Prince's nature, rather than just the aggressive one. "I absolutely understand how upsetting this is, but what if we went about this in a.. different sort of way." She paused a moment, making sure he was listening (and there was a Sapphire shield now on the other side of that door just in case he wasn't - though she didn't relish the necessary decision to lock herself in here with a Warlord Prince. Sure, her Jewel was darker than his by a rank, but it was only a single rank, and if they actually had to wield Jewels against each other she'd probably STILL end up dead. Well, so would he, if she could get her snake tooth in him but.. well, it was best not to think about both of them dying in defense of Jack's stupidity.

"I've got an idea. You'd be able to nudge Jack into getting his head out of his ass, and -as punishment for the slight he's already given his Queen and Court-" in Kamal's opinion anyway, but seeing as he was the one with murder on the brain, his opinion was really the only one that mattered at the moment "-there's also the added benefit of utter humiliation. How does that sound. You'll get to socially torture him. Won't that be so much more satisfying than a quick death and a crying Queen?"

It was an alien word coming off of an alien tongue. Please. Kamal didn't expect those words to come out of Rayne's lips, for anyone other than Prince Striker mayhaps. It slowed him a touch, drawing his attention away from the door that the Widow then secured with her own power.

She spoke of 'another way'. The honest path was never liked by anyone. Going down the hall, killing Jack, and having a nice red wine afterward would be far more fitting of his time than any way the Widow might suggest. But that is the flaw of lesser beings, not seeing how the world worked behind their reason and rationales. Passionless, emotionless beings the lot of them.

He was going to kill the man before this was over. He was infecting the Dark Ones with his deranged attachments.

But the other way, as Rayne spelled out her lure to snag his attention away from death and murder, didn't sound so bad. Odelle would be furious that Jack was dead and keeping him alive would appease her. Meanwhile Jack would get tortured and tormented all the while? A worthwhile punishment, seeing as how all Kamal seemed to have to do is urinate on a math book and fling Jack into the Twisted Kingdom.

Social torture. Odelle not crying. Or a quick death. The death was still powerfully tempting.

He slowly turned his attention from whatever was behind Rayne's head, the look of a bubbling Warlord Prince who saw meat rather than people, to focus more directly on her instead. "What is your idea."

Kamal slowed, then turned - and for half an instant Rayne wasn't sure if that was because he'd actually heard her or if it was because the sound of her voice had drawn the attention of a hungry beast and he was able to rip her apart instead of Jack. Well, try to rip her apart. If she and Kamal every did go head to head there was every likelihood that they'd both end up dead, and Rayne was fairly satisfied with that, all things considered. At least neither of them would have to worry about dealing with the fallout.

'What is your idea.'

Oh, good - he wasn't going to try and turn her into pudding just yet.

Rayne took a breath and kept herself fairly still, making sure she kept his attention on her words instead of little movements that might provoke the beast to the forefront again. She had rather a lot of experience with Warlord Princes in all sorts of moods, and she was thankful for that now.

"You and Odelle have always had a sexual tension, yeah? At least, there always has been from Odelle's side and you - well, you're you." She didn't mean that as any kind of slap, just a statement of fact. He was a Warlord Prince, he was attractive, he was powerful, and he was an incredibly dominant personality on top of what came naturally as a Warlord Prince who wore a Green Jewel. Most females looked at him and suddenly felt a little bit wet from some bodily fluid or another. "Play it up. We get Jack to think that Odelle has finally given in to you because Jack, as athletic as they can get all over his office, isn't stepping up in the ways she wants him to. It's not like Queens are expected to be monogamous, and it's not like she's got a Consort or anything. There'd be nothing he could really be upset about, not as her Steward anyway."

Even if the ruse only lasted a week before Odelle figured out what was going on, at least it would open up a bloody dialogue about it. What was making the whole thing so blasted unbearable was the fact that neither Odelle nor Jack seemed willing to acknowledge or talk about the weirdness. Even if in the end, Jack remained the Steward and no official Consort was named - maybe they'd sit down and take a closer look at the court dynamics and realize that some things needed to be adjusted.

Of course, it had occurred to Rayne that she could sit down and just tell this to Odelle - but really this was far more entertaining. Besides, it wasn't like she hadn't poked her about the whole Jack-Consort-Steward thing before. Odelle just wasn't all that concerned or otherwise didn't want to talk about it. It wasn't Rayne's job to figure that shit out. She was the Court Seer, she had bigger fish to fry.

This, though, this could potentially be very fun.

The woman radiated resolve like a perfume. It was intoxicating. He wanted to revel in it before removing her spine and mounting it on the wall for all to respect. His knuckles gave a series of pops as he clenched fists opened and closed, his eyes becoming transfixed on the Widow while she spoke.

The Strong Widow outlined her plan. A vicious and scathing passion play. Lure them by their hearts to where they needed to be so that they could settle things once and for all. Kamal need do nothing but be himself and let Odelle by her own actions convince Jack to act. Simple. Effective. Kamal simply needed to be the bait, luring Odelle along like breadcrumbs.

No death. No blood.

How disappointing.

Kamal's voice was unnaturally calm for the amount of emotion that bled off of him like a wave. A master of his own anger, one who directed his righteous power rather than trying to restrain it. No grinding of teeth, no snarls or growls. He rode the waves of his emotions like a master shipwright in a thunderstorm in the ocean and was reflected in an unnaturally smooth tone to his voice like someone pleased. "Odelle will tell Jack that any perceptions are false." His eyes sharpening on her features. "It would break the illusion...unless you have an idea of using her testimony to add more doubt?"

Odelle, politically, was dumber than a box of rocks. Odelle, as a person, was not. Jack had the emotional value of a teaspoon but he wasn't an idiot either. If Kamal led a suggestive gambit hinting that he and Odelle were growing intimately serious, all it would take is a word from Odelle to Jack that nothing was happening and everything would be a waste. Did the Strong Widow have a way of using that against them? To add more suspicion, if and when Odelle tried to tell Jack that nothing was going on?

He was sure the Widow would have an idea. Her intelligence tasted delicious.

Alright, good. Good. The Warlord Prince was listening to her - which was better than the Warlord Prince rampaging through the Seat to cut down the Steward of the Court on some semi-imagined slight. It would have been truly foolish to think that she could actually relax yet, but she did allow herself to release a little bit of tension.

His question, though, had her scoffing softly in an imitation of amusement. "Please - Jack's downfall has always been his insecurity. Otherwise, he and Odelle would have gotten together a hell of a lot earlier to begin with. Odelle is still attracted to you and Eirnan particularly as her heart-males, and that tension with you is infamous."

She moved, now, slowly, careful of where Kamal's attention was and if he looked particularly primed to pounce. All she did was take a few steps and turn slightly, so that she could lean casually back against the desk. She kept her posture loose and as relaxed as she could in case he decided that he was still riding that edge hard enough that he was looking for a target - but she was fairly sure that they were out of the woods for the most part.

"You won't be the only one dropping hints. You speak for you, Prince - but I can speak for Odelle in hints and glances and all sorts of little ways that only another female and stratigically allied best friend really can."

She shrugged. "Look, even if Jack does go to Odelle - and Odelle assuages his fears and makes it all better, then we've accomplished something, and we've gotten them to start a conversation without sitting them down like a couple of hapless kids. If this goes on for even a week, then Jack can sweat it out and do some introspective thinking and once he does that he'll have to talk to Odelle one way or another. Odelle is smart and she'll take it the rest of the way to ultimately get them to a resolution. And you still get to have some fun humiliating Jack in the process, yeah?"
