It's 5 o'clock somewhere or so they say
« on: Dec 17, 18, 10:36:06 PM »
Braelyn walked the crowded streets doing her best to look like someone it would be better to give a little space to. When others didn’t give her the space she needed, the dark haired Healer did her best to find that space for herself.

She was feeling more than a little guilty. She’d told Geir that she would come see his tavern ages ago. What was it called? Oh yes - The Tottering Otter. But a Healing matter had come up with one of her regular patients experiencing an unexpected complication and somehow she had just never made it there. Geir hadn’t said anything to make it seem like he felt slighted; really her friend was too easy going for that kind of thing, but Braelyn was conscious of his eyes on her and often felt she was being judged. She was fairly certain that was something she imagined, but still - it made her feel guilty.

At any rate, today was a day off and she had gotten out the door and away from the flat without any emergencies cropping up, so Braelyn was on her way to the tavern at last. It was a little early - not yet ten in the morning, but the Healer figured she would be able to get a drink and a snack. Just because it was a tavern didn’t mean the drinks had to be alcoholic, right? Or she could indulge since it was a day off. Besides, she'd had to get out early in order to avoid getting called in.

By the time the Tottering Otter was in sight, Braelyn was wound pretty tight and had about decided she’d have a soothing glass of wine, early hour or no. Why did there have to be so many people on the streets? Shouldn’t they all be at work?

The Healer suppressed her frustration and tenseness and endeavored to put a pleasant expression on her face as she entered the pleasantly dim building. There weren’t that many people in here, thank the Darkness and Braelyn’s attention was immediately drawn by the young looking witch behind the bar since she didn’t see Geir right away. Not that she expected him to be waiting for her since she hadn’t told him she was coming today...she didn’t want him disappointed if something kept her away again. She carefully made her way to an empty seat at the bar well away from any other customers and smiled shyly at the other woman as she came over.

“Hi. Do you think it’s too early in the day for a glass or two of wine?”

Autumn was coming to a close, Winsol was practically right around the corner, and Nina was all sorts of abuzz with energy and excitement. This year they were going to host several holiday gatherings across the thirteen days and Nina was going to be able to deck herself out with the spirit (and spirits) as she tended bar for each of them. One of them was even a private party! Ooo! It was just going to be so much fun!! She'd come up with some special drinks just for the season and they were starting to sample them out bit by bit in order to draw people back in during and around the holiday to get the full drinks and take advantage of some of their other festive promotions.

While on the whole, Nina was really more of a summer witch than a winter one, she really did love the holiday. She'd never been particularly religious, but she liked the general gist of the whole thing. Getting together to celebrate Witch - it was also about hope, wasn't it? It was about hope, and wishes coming true, and being united, which to her always made her think of her family. And her family always made her want to smile.

This year had been rough in some parts, being away from them and mostly on her own, but she felt.. good, stronger and more sure of herself than she had in a long time. She knew she could stand on her own two feet now, she could find her own path and make her own friends and do things... her own way. And that was okay.

A little tune on her lips, Nina busied herself around the bar, chatting up some of the regulars as she worked on her morning tasks, eager to get them done so that she could spend the idle pre-lunch lull fine-tuning the holiday specialties. Usually, Nina worked the evenings - they were the busiest - but Geir had worked in a few earlier shifts for her during the week so that she would have some evenings off as well. Which was nice, because then she had time to be able to go out with friends or go shopping for the upcoming holiday, or.. spend some time with him... which was cool. You know, really, really really cool.

Pulling herself out of lingering daydreams of Geir's grin and the way he laughed, Nina instead focused her attention at the new arrival - a Healer who had just taken a seat at the end of the bar. Friendly smile rising easily to greet the newcomer, Nina made her way over.

"Not at all," she said with a grin. "You know, we have some 'breakfast wines', if you could believe in such a thing. They're lighter white wines, almost like champagne but not as" -she made a flutter, fizzy gesture with her fingers- "bubbly. And they go great with our bar breakfast menu. Did you want to see it?"

The other woman's grin pulled a real smile onto Braelyn's face. “Breakfast wines? Really? I would love to see your menu.” As she read over the card handed to her, the dark haired Healer muttered, “I wonder why he never mentioned breakfast wines... didn't he realize that would have gotten me here a lot sooner?”

She pulled her attention back to the other woman, flushing a little. “I'm sorry, I'm being rude, aren't I? To be honest, I have no idea what to choose. Perhaps you could ask the cook to surprise me? And you pick the wine? Normally, I'm pretty picky... but since I'd never even heard of breakfast wines - well how could I possibly make an informed decision?!” Her smile widened impishly. “I'll just have to come back often enough to try them all so I can pick a favorite!” She laughed a little, “It's exciting to make a discovery like this, you know?”

Braelyn had been studying the witch on the other side of the bar throughout the brief conversation and spoke again before the other woman could leave. “You're Nina, right? I've heard a lot about you. I'd love to see your fancy drink tricks some time. I've heard they're just the most amazing thing.”

She waited for the other woman's surprise, hoping they'd be able to keep talking. It wasn't often the Healer got to get out and meet someone who wasn't a patient. She wondered if Geir was there today; maybe they could all talk awhile. And maybe Nina wouldn't mind if Brae found out when she got off work... perhaps they could go shopping or something else girly. She always had liked to do that with friends, old or new.

Nina cocked her head as the Healer said something about a 'he' who had apparently been trying to get her to come and see the Tottering Otter. Maybe one of their regulars? Or another member of staff? Either way, it made her feel good that someone out there was recommending this place to their friends, and that those friends were coming!

She flashed the other woman a grin at her apology. "Oh don't worry about it! It's a little weird, yeah, but you'd be surprised by how many people want a light bit of zing to their morning routine." She winked, and hummed a four-beat tune of a ditty that might have been made to go with the words 'zing in your morning routine', but she didn't subject the poor woman to the whole of the song. She'd come up with it when they first introduced the wines on the menu but it wasn't one of her better ones. It was just one of the catchy ones and so often ended up getting stuck in her head. Ah well.

"Sure! Can do - I like to think myself pretty good at recommendations anyway and who doesn't love a fun little surprise?" She grinned broadly, then her expression shifted into surprise as the Healer apparently seemed to know her.

The witch blinked, twice, then grinned, a bit of color touching her cheeks in a pleased sort of embarrassment. "Oh! Yes! That's me! I normally don't do anything fancy for a wine-pour but I think I've got one or two that would work with the bottle." She grinned. Nina was a witch who did a lot of grinning.

"But I don't know your name, and you know mine! Come on, if you're gonna be a regular and we're gonna be friends you should tell me your name and who it was that failed so utterly at getting you in here sooner. I definitely feel jilted and would like to give him a piece of my mind." She winked, wanting to make sure that the other woman knew that she was only kidding and wasn't going to get angry with her friend. Tease him, sure, but nothing from an ill nature.

Braelyn gave a chagrined laugh. “I'm sorry, I'm being rude again aren't I? I promise I'm not usually this bad…” The Healer looked away briefly in embarrassment before looking at Nina again, her cheeks decidedly pink now.

“I really don't know where my manners are today. My name is Braelyn. Geir usually calls me Brae though. I'm one of his flat-mates... which is why it's so horrible that this is my first time being here!”

She looked around the tavern, trying to gauge how much of a crowd there was. There were a couple of people at the other end of the bar, and a handful of others scattered amongst the tables in the room. To her eye, it didn't seem like too many people, but then it had been a very long time since she had spent any time in a place like this, and she didn't know if they had another dining room she was unaware of.

She leaned forward, speaking in a voice meant to sound conspiratorial, “Can you sit and chat for a while or are you too busy?” she asked. “I hope we will be friends. You could tell me how it is working for Geir, and I can make sure you know how to find me if he ever does something particularly... stupidly male-like and you need to vent - or teach him a lesson if that's what you want.” She winked and grinned to show she was kidding about that last part - at least mostly.

Nina's eyes widened a bit as the Healer introduced herself as Braelyn. As the Braelyn. Geir's Braelyn! Well, not.. not Geir's Braelyn - but in the Braelyn-specifically-associated-with-Geir. His flatmate and his friend. Not his.. his girlfriend. Or.. or at least she didn't think that she was his girlfriend. Oh Night, she hoped not. Not..! Not that she didn't want them to be happy if they were, or that she didn't want Geir to have someone as nice and pretty at Braelyn but...

Realizing that maybe she was staring a moment too long, Nina shook herself out of her thoughts and instead grinned broadly at the other woman. "Oh of course! I should have realized!" She chuckled and leaned forward on the counter. "Geir has talked about you, and complained loudly and dramatically that you haven't come in yet - so I totally should have made the connection." She chuckled. "Don't worry, I've reminded him each time that people have lives. And you're here now! He'll be sad he missed you, but I'm kinda glad that I got to meet you on my own." There was a certain amount of mischief that sparked in her honey-brown eyes and she pushed her glasses up the bridge of her nose a bit. "Now we can conspire." She winked, then pushed back to take a look around the bar, considering Brae's request to sit and chat for a while.

"You know, it's pretty slow - so I don't see why not. Let me give your order to the cook and I'll be right back." With a flash of a grin, she turned and disappeared through the door that lead back into the kitchen, then returned a few moments later with a glass of aforementioned breakfast wine. Setting it down before the Healer, she resumed her casual position leaning against the bar and smiled at her.

"Now that we're Officially Friends" because of course they were "can I call you Brae, too? Or is that too forward?" She blushed lightly, hoping it would be okay. She felt like her and the Healer could get along really well - and Braelyn was so close with Geir, she'd like to get to know her better. And maybe that could help her get to know Geir better too.

Braelyn rolled her eyes fondly. “Of course Geir would be loud and dramatic about it. You'll have to swear to tell him I was here - he'll never believe it if I'm the only one telling him! Still,  he'll definitely be beside himself that I showed up when he wasn't here! But I had to get out and away before something came up again, so I didn't stop to see if he was even home or not.”

She smiled and watched the other woman dash off, presumably towards the kitchen, no small amount of bemusement in her expression. Nina certainly had a lot of energy! It was no wonder the lively witch held so much of Geir's attention.

When Nina came back with a glass of wine, Brae smiled broadly at her, eyeing the wine with interest. “Please feel free to call me Brae! I feel like I know enough about you that we're already friends.”

She took a sip of the crisp, light, cool wine and hummed a little as she rolled it around in her mouth before swallowing. “That is good! I normally drink full-bodied reds, but that would be too heavy this early in the day. I might have to get some of this for home for those days I can't make it here!”

Her eyes twinkled at the lively bartender. “So how did you end up tending bar in Geir's tavern?”

She leaned back, taking a larger swallow of her wine as she waited for an answer.

Nina blushed a bit - she couldn't help it! - when Brae said she felt like she already knew so much about her. That had to be because Geir talked about her, right? It was a bit silly, almost, how happy that made her.

Brae praised the breakfast wine and Nina grinned, lifting her chin rather proudly at her selection. "Yes! I hoped you would like that one." Her eyes sparkled with a little bit of play and mischief. "I think I'll keep it's secret a little bit longer, though, juuuust until we've got you addicted to the food too. To say nothing for the company. One more reason for you to just have to come in." She grinned. "Then I can tease Geir about him not having thought of it sooner. All for the greater good, you understand." She nodded solemnly. As a witch with two brothers (and being the middle triplet!) Nina was very well versed on male-hassling. One could even say it was an affectionate hobby of hers.

"Aha!" she exclaimed with a grin at Brae's question. "It's quite an epic tale, I promise you." She blushed, then laughed and shook her head. "Actually, it's really not. My family owns a brewery - which is fun and all, but I like being around people. So, I started working around here and there as a bartender. Both of my brothers sorta... you know, found their way and I decided I should do the same so..." She drifted off a little bit. Even now, after being on her own for over a year, it sounded kind of silly. You went off on your own to find your destiny.. and decided to be a bartender? But she liked being a bartender! She liked the Tottering Otter, and their regulars, and Geir...

Nina cleared her throat. "Geir had just gotten this place sorta over Winsol last year, you know, and was looking to hire a couple bartenders and various staff. I applied, and wowed him with my tricks," she winked, "and got the job." She shrugged.

"And that's that! What about you? How did you end up sharing a flat with our illustrious mutual friend?"

Braelyn couldn't help but grin back at Nina, or laugh with her, whenever the other witch grinned or laughed - there was just something so infectious about her joy in life.

She listened as Nina told her tale, very interested to learn more about her new friend. “Two brothers, huh?” She asked thoughtfully. “No sisters?”

The dark haired Healer caught the odd undercurrent to Nina's voice as she told how she interviewed with Geir after having decided to follow her brothers out on her own. “As long as you enjoy what you do, I think that's all that matters.”

“How did you end up sharing a flat with our illustrious mutual friend?"

Braelyn tensed up a bit - she should have known that would be the logical follow up question. “Geir... found me when something bad had happened to me. He took me home with him, got me patched up, and when I woke up...he basically claimed me as psuedo-family and insisted I stay - so I have.”

She shook her head, casting around for a different topic - she didn't want to dwell on the past right now, and she didn't want to ruin the happy mood, or sour the taste of her delicious wine.

“So Nina, what do you do for fun when you aren't here pouring drinks?”

The Healer knew the other woman would likely see through her rather transparent change of subject, but hopefully she would be sensitive enough to not push it now. That was a conversation for later in the day when she could get good and drunk in her own room.

'Geir... found me when something bad had happened to me...'

Nina felt her heart tighten in sympathy even as curiosity wriggled about behind her tongue. She wanted to ask what had happened - but one didn't make a good bartender without being able to read a room, let alone a single person in conversation. Whatever had happened, it was clearly a painfully sore topic and despite Brae saying that she felt like she already knew her Nina knew that wasn't actually the case. They'd just met, and this pain was probably too private for her to want to share with her.

So instead she flashed a warm, rather sweet sort of smile and nodded. "That sounds like Geir, alright. He can be a bit of a goof but he's a sweetheart, you know? A.. a really genuine, good guy." Okay, maybe she sighed just a little bit but she hoped that Brae either wouldn't notice or would forgive her minor bout of swooning. Wouldn't that be embarrassing if she told Geir!!

"Oh! This and that," she answered with a grin, readily jumping onto the next conversation train. It was unclear whether she was doing this fully out of understanding, or because she had maybe just embarrassed herself by sighing over Geir, or maybe just because she was that kind of person to be very accustomed to the bouncing of topics all about a conversation like a sugared up bunny rabbit. In all honesty, it was probably a bit of all three. "I like to design new tricks, and I love music. I play the ukulele and come up with my own little songs." She laughed a bit and leaned back, smiling a bit bashfully. "Nothing profound I'm afraid, but life is always a bit more fun when it's put to music, you know? My brothers are both musicians too, of a sort. Whenever we're together we sing and play just for fun." There was a tinge of wistfulness there - and longing. She missed her brothers terribly. It wasn't even like she never got to see them, and she'd been on her own for a year now but... but still, she missed seeing them every day, and laughing with them every day, and sharing things with them.

Brae suppressed a sigh of relief as Nina went along with the change of topic. She didn't fail to notice the sigh over Geir's name, but she ignored it for now - time enough to press for more details, and maybe tease a little when they truly were friends. It didn't occur to the Healer that it wasn't her business, because Geir was her most important friend and she wanted to make sure he was happy.

“I'll have to come back to watch you do your tricks Nina,” she grinned at her companion. “Perhaps you could teach some of the more simple ones to me. I know how to open a bottle of wine and that's about it.”

She waggled her finger playfully. “Coming up with new tricks sounds far too much like your work though, even if it is fun! Music now….that sounds more like something fun to do.” She shook her head wistfully. “I've always liked to listen to music, but sadly I've never had a talent for it myself.”

She pondered for a moment. The natural thing to do at this point in the conversation would be to ask more about Nina's brothers since this was the second time the other woman had mentioned them...but Brae didn't want to show any interest because then the other woman might want to introduce her to them, and that...was something she couldn't do. At least not now. And not without Geir, although that opened up other potential problems.

“I wanna hear more about what you do for fun outside work, but first I've got to ask if you ever perform here. Geir said he would be getting people to play some nights to encourage more drinking. I hope he thought to ask you!”

"Perform here?" Nina chuckled. "I don't know if I'd call any of my music, er, performance-worthy. It's just a lot of playing around mostly - you know, a way to put my life to music and somesuch. Most of it is just.. little jingles and nonsense songs." She grinned, but there was a bit of color in her cheeks that maybe belied that there were other songs too, ones that weren't just about breakfast wine and completing the evening stock counts. That, maybe, there were some sappy love songs in there. And, maybe, there were some verses written about trying to find your way. And, maybe, there were lines and chords and melodies dedicated all sorts of other things woven together into complete songs and expressions with piece of her heart sewn between the subdivisions of the beats.

"Besides!" she hurried along. "I've got to be tending the bar, you know?" Two bottled found their way to her hands and she spun them against her palms, then flipped them over each other to grab them by the necks with the opposite hands that had held them originally. She posed with a wink, one bottle tapping her brow and the other pointing to Brae playfully. She held the playful stance for a moment, then set the bottles down and leaned back again.

It was a bit scary to think about playing her music.. seriously for anyone. Like opening up something intimate and vulnerable for strangers to stare at and.. well, Nina didn't think she was brave enough for that. Besides, it wasn't like her music was really all that good anyway. It was just for fun..!

"What about you, Brae?" she found herself asking again - though this time about what she hoped was something of a less sensitive topic. Her smile curved teasingly. "I'm sure you aren't always healing. Oh! And here I am just assuming that's what you've got going on for you as a profession! Are you a standard sort of Healer? Or do you have a specialty? Oh! Or do you do something else entirely?"

Braelyn laughed and applauded the trick with the bottles. For now she didn't press about the music - that was another thing that could wait until they knew each other better, Brae would see if she could get Nina to play for her, and then they would see what happened after that.

She giggled a little at the rush of questions clearly meant to get the spotlight of the conversation off the other woman. “Yes, I'm a regular Healer. I run a small clinic in town that specializes in women and children. I'm good at wound care and minor illnesses, childbirth and the like...so pretty standard stuff.”

She tapped her chin thoughtfully as she considered what else to say. “I've always enjoyed gardening - I grow most of the herbs I use for medicines, but I like to grow flowers too. I like to read when I'm by myself, but when I get to spend time with girl friends I enjoy window shopping, though it seems like I do that mostly on my own these days too. I also spend what time I can just hanging out with Geir and the others. Maybe you can join us sometime...is there anyone else who tends bar besides you and Geir? Obviously you can't leave the place without a bartender!”

She laughed mischievously, “I'm sure Geir wouldn't mind if you hung out with us, and if the others object, they can get lost!”

She looked to see what Nina thought of that idea. “Oh, and I like to consider myself a collector of good wines...not that Geir has brought me anything interesting from here.” She pretended to pout a little. “You can add that to what you tease him about, yeah? And I shall have to tease him for not bringing you by the flat to hang out with us.”

"The problem that I have with window shopping," Nina said with a sigh, "is that it never stays window shopping." She gave a sheepish giggle. "I mean, not for me. Sometimes I've got the worst impulse control." Her nose wrinkled and she fiddled with her glasses. Okay, maybe it was more than just sometimes. Maybe she typically had pretty abysmal impulse control - but luckily she lived a tame enough life that it couldn't get her into too much trouble. You know, most of the time.

Her expression went momentarily distant in the way that happened with many of the Blood when they were communicating on a psychic thread, then she held up a finger and grinned. "Your food is up, I'll be right back!" Then, with a grin, she pushed away from the counter and vanished back into the kitchen for a moment. When she returned, she was carrying a plate with a tall stack of pancakes covered with fresh fruit and whipped cream and a healthy side of bacon. She set the plate down with a flourish. "Voile! This here is the Nina Special. That's not it's real name, but it's my favorite so that's what I'm calling it right now." She winked and grinned enthusiastically, waiting for her new friend to sample it before rummaging up the thread of their conversation before she'd made the momentary departure.

"Oh! And I would love to hang out with you all sometime! I'll definitely poke Geir about it. We've got a couple other part-timers that rotate out manning the bar or provide extra support on busy nights, so as long as he's got an idea of when you guys are all free he can make sure that the both of us have the night off." There was maybe a little bit of color in her cheeks, because maybe, just maybe, Geir had arranged it once or twice so that the two of them could hang out for an afternoon... Nothing big or fancy! Just.. hanging out, as friends, because they were friends, and friends hung out with each other, because that was a friendly thing to do.. as friends.

"I'll even bring the wine." She grinned. "Do you like different beers and ales? Ciders and the like? My family doesn't do much in the way of wine, but we've got some great brews this season."

Braelyn laughed in delight. “I'll let you in on a little secret!” She leaned forward again and lowered her voice to a conspiratorial whisper. “My window shopping is almost always just a scouting trip for what to buy the next time I've got money to spend! Although sometimes it's also a scouting trip for ideas for new outfits or accessories to make for myself.”

She nodded at Nina's words about her breakfast and watched the other woman's progress into the kitchen and back. Her eyes widened in appreciation at the plentiful plate of food, and she immediately grabbed a piece of bacon and bit into it.

“Yuummm,” she mumbled, rolling her eyes in pleasure. “I love bacon and this is cooked perfectly.” She finished off the slice of bacon in two more large bites, and then blushed seeing the look on Nina's face. “Sorry, that was….”she trailed off, not wanting to comment on her rudeness again. “Do you mind if I eat while we chat?”

Assuming Nina wouldn't mind, Brae took a bite of pancakes, making sure to have plenty of fruit and whipped cream on her fork too. She didn't say anything about how tasty this was, but the speed with which she took another bite spoke volumes.

She grimaced a little at the question about beer and ales. “I'm afraid I've never been a fan of beer - I don't care for the taste of the hops…. I assume ale would be the same. I've never heard of ciders though. Are they made the same as beer?”

"Not at all," Nina reassured with a chuckle when the other woman asked if it was alright if she ate while they chatted. "It was kind of the intent, after all." She flashed the other a grin and then, in the spirit of friendship, stole a strawberry off her plate and took a bite, smiling around the berry as she sucked on the juices and then licked her fingers. "Mm! Mwa!" She made a kissing gesture with her fingers to her lips. "Most marvelous - freshest fruit this side of the city, I tell you that," she promised with a wink before settling comfortably in her spot again as they returned to the conversation at hand.

"Hmm, you might like ciders. Depending on the brew it does kind of have a beer sort of... feel to it - but the flavor is a lot different because of the fruits used to make it. Apple and pear are the most popular. BUT, dad is working on a pineapple cider for next season. Pineapple can be kind of expensive, so he's still working out the best balance so we can get the most bang for our buck (so to say) but still have it be along a reasonable price-point for our accounts. Well, their accounts. You know what I mean." She blushed. It wasn't her business - but she'd been around her family's brewery her whole life and so it still felt like it was hers if by family association than nothing else.

She really could have gone into the inner workings of the brewery and the business for about four hours, but for the moment she let herself get distracted by something that Brae said a few moments earlier - before the mini-brewing introductory.

A grin spread across her face and she leaned closer again. "Wait, so you said you look for ideas to make your own outfits and accessories? That's so cool! Did you make anything you're wearing now? Sometimes we'd make outfits and stuff when we were younger, but it was more like a dress-up, play-time sort of kid thing rather than anything any of us would dare wear out in public nowadays." She chuckled, because she was pretty sure she still had a "dress" that her brothers had "made" her as a part of the Terrific Trio costume set for some silly play they did for their parents when they were like twelve.

Braelyn ducked her head, suddenly feeling shy. “Yes, actually. I sewed my  dress and knitted my purse.” She laughed a little. “I didn't do much dress up myself as a kid, but when my baby sister was about three or four she wanted to dress up and always managed to talk me into making her costumes.” She grinned, remembering her imperious little sister. “I learned to sew out of self defense. Tiana would get very cross if things weren't perfect for her. I really shouldn't have been so surprised when my stepmother wrote to tell me Tiana has started manifesting the psychic scent of a Black Widow.”

She fingered her purse   before holding it up for Nina to examine more closely. “I don't really remember when or why I learned to knit - I was really little. My father still wears the lopsided scarf he said was the first thing I made.”

She took a few more bites of her breakfast after first piling several of her strawberries on a napkin and shoving them towards Nina. “Please have some more. This is more food than I usually eat for breakfast and lunch combined!”

She was a little surprised by how quickly she was working through the plate of food. Normally she didn't eat much in the mornings... unless there was bacon of course.

She polished off another slice of bacon and looked at Nina as she wiped her fingers. “I could teach you if you want to learn how yourself. Either knitting or sewing, or both - though I wouldn't recommend trying to learn both at the same time.” She ate a couple more bites of fruit. “Actually, I could teach you to crochet too. It's similar to knitting, but makes a denser fabric depending on the yarn used, of course. Personally, I prefer it for things like scarves or hats or bags, but I've seen some lovely crocheted skirts too.”

"Oh my," Nina said with a laugh, not trying to hide her amusement as Brae described the (surely adorable) hassle of her demanding younger sister. "I grew up the middle child - but the middle of triplets, so I don't think it was quite the same. We always sorta knew who was the oldest and youngest and whatnot, but most of the time it didn't matter. Well, unless we were dividing something up or attempting to share something that no one actually wanted to share." These arguments and "compromises" didn't stop as they outgrew their childhood, but the tone of them would become decidedly more playful. It was just so much fun to tease Ned about being the youngest. Especially since he'd turned out to be the tallest. Nina, unsurprisingly, was the shortest, but she really wasn't particularly short for a woman. All the same, being called 'short stuff' by her 'baby' brother could get a little annoying - so she could hardily sympathize with the bossy younger sibling thing.

Her eyes widened, though, as the other witch went on to divulge more about said sibling. "A Black Widow? Wow! Talk about feisty. We don't have any Black Widows in my family, though papa has sighed over the consideration of hiring one on at the brewery. Because of all their knowledge and knack for, y'know, mixing and poisons and stuff, you'd think one would be pretty good at balancing other things. But he's never actually gone about it, just moped from time to time." She chuckled, shaking her head and leaning forward to snag one of the additionally offered strawberries.

"Thanks! I'll only take the one more though. I actually ate not that long ago. Munching is just an awful sort of habit of mine." She did straighten up with a grin at the offer to learn how to stitch and sew a bit more properly. "Oh! I'd love that! We could get together and have a little sewing party maybe! My flat is kinda super small though.." She gave a sheepish, apologetic sort of look. "It's just a studio... You're welcome over of course! I'd just have to make sure I cleaned up and, y'know, actually put away my laundry." Her mother would be so proud.

She tilted her head thoughtfully. "Do you think you could help me make an apron here for the Tottering Otter?" she asked. "Something fun, but with the name on it - that way I could wear it all the time. And! If it had pockets - it would be super useful!" Night, she was always wishing she had better pockets. Okay so sure, she could vanish stuff, but pockets were way more handy in her opinion.

Braelyn tilted her head as she studied Nina thoughtfully. “Aprons are very easy and you would look amazing in an adorable ruffled apron with something like fruit or flowers on the fabric.” She considered for a moment. “Or maybe since this place is called the Tottering Otter we could find some fabric with otters on it. Or otter shaped appliques might be easier.”

The Healer reached into her purse, pulling out a small sketch pad and a pencil. She flipped to a blank page and started to sketch. “Your studio would be plenty big enough to learn and to make something like an apron I would think.” She looked up from her sketching to grin at the other witch. “If you want to make something bigger and need more space, you can always come home with Geir and take over the living room. I'm sure he wouldn't mind.”

No, she thought to herself, he probably wouldn't mind at all.

She was quiet a moment as she put the finishing touches on her sketch. Braelyn set down her pencil and held up the sketch book so she could turn it to face Nina. “What would you think of something like this? We could even conceal pockets in the ruffles here.” and she tapped her finger where she had drawn a small arrow.

She passed the sketch book across the bar so Nina could study it more closely if she wished. “Or if that's too much, I can help you with something simpler, but I think that would be really cute on you.”

Nina wasn't watching Brae sketch. Not because she wasn't interested! She was just.. well, a little bit distracted by the thought of going over to Geir's place. If she had an excuse, like working on this apron and getting Brae's help...

Her cheeks burned a bit, thinking about it, and she tried to push the thought out of her mind. No, that was ridiculous. Her and Geir were friends - and it wouldn't be right to use Brae's offer like that, as a way to spend more time around him, or learn more about him, or see where he lived, or anything like that! It wasn't fair to Geir and it wasn't fair to Brae, and - really - it wasn't fair to herself either. He hadn't even invited her over himself yet, and she didn't want to intrude. Maybe he didn't feel friendly enough with her yet to invite her to his home!

'What do you think of something like this?'

Only the other witch's voice pulled her out of her own silly reverie, and when she focused back on what the Healer was showing her she instantly let out a little squeal of delight.

"Oh! Oh Brae, that's so cute!" She grinned at her. "Do you really think I could make something so cute like this?" Her grin only got bigger. Even if she didn't stand a chance, she was definitely going to try. And even if it looked like a six-year-old made it with glue sticks and safety scissors she was for damn sure going to wear it to work at least once.

She beamed at her new friend and nudged her. "This is awesome, well and truly brilliant. You're really talented, you know that Brae?"

Braelyn blushed and grinned at Nina's praise, shaking her head a little. "It's not that great." She took a long sip of her wine to give her face time to cool. "I definitely think you can do it! We'll just take it slow, but if you want, we can practice on a simple version - maybe something we can get Geir and the other bartenders to wear."

She flipped the page and drew a few quick lines. "Like this," the Healer said, turning it to show Nina. "Maybe you can talk Geir into sponsoring some sort of outdoor festival where you can wear the aprons for everyone to see and served mulled wine and cider and bratwursts or something. I bet that would bring in a ton of customers!" She tapped her pencil against her chin in thought. "If it went well, maybe he could even make it a seasonal thing."

She ate the last couple of bites of her breakfast and shoved the plate away with a quiet groan. "I may have to just come for the drinks and the company from now on." She grinned to take any implied criticism out of her words. "If I eat like that too often, I'm not going to be able to move!"

Braelyn picked up her wine glass, giving the remaining wine a little swirl. "So. When would you like to pick out your fabrics? I know the perfect place to go."

She raised her wine glass to the other witch. "Here's to the start of a fantastic friendship!"

"That would be absolutely fantastic," Nina agreed with a grin. "It would really make us look and feel more like a team too, you know? Not that we aren't a good one already, but I like the idea of all the customers knowing it too!"

The idea of something for Geir and the other bartenders wearing a cute uniformed apron had Nina smiling. Okay, so, maybe it was mostly the idea of Geir in some adorable otter-themed apron that had her smiling. Geir, in an otter-themed apron, wearing little otter-like ears smiling that smile he had and passing out free samples and then smiling at her and maybe dancing with her as they got involved with this hypothetical outdoor festival.

Oooookay Nina calm down.

There was a definite blush on her cheeks by the time Braelyn finished up her breakfast and the conversation rolled onward - and she was glad for the movement in topic. Now wasn't really the time to think about the way her heart did those silly little flip-flops when she thought about Geir like that.

"Don't worry, we'll just find a good place to go dancing to make up for all the pancakes," Nina teased with a smile at the other witch's good-natured complaint, then hummed as she contemplated the clock. "Well I'll be off around three today, then I've got a late one tomorrow night, then I've got the day after off entirely. So maybe then? Whatever works best for your schedule I can make it work as long as I'm not.. working." She chuckled. "Work work working work," she reiterated in sing-song, because saying "work" so many times in one sentence certainly deserved a bit of a musical number.

A wide grin spread across her features and she lifted a bottle of something to join in with the toast.

To the start of a fantastic friendship, huh? Yeah, she kinda liked that!
