Perhaps naively, Kelda had expected this to be a quick trip. She'd imagined popping in, making her "request" and then leaving Violet to her own devices in short order. In and out. Instead of waiting comfortably in Violet's room for the madame to return, however, Kelda found herself confronted with the most infuriating set of security webs she'd ever had the displeasure of encountering. They followed no sense or pattern that Kelda could see, yet were thorough and sturdy enough that trying to bull her way through them seemed unwise. She could have just sent Violet a thread, no matter where in the building the witch was. She could've summoned her to unlock the webs so that she and Kelda could speak in private. Hell, she could've had the entire conversation with Violet via threads, and not have to reveal her presence to others at all.

But running into those foreign security webs had pull tight a stinging, silver cord of territorial possessiveness in the Sapphire Widow, and working her way past them was suddenly very important. It took her the better part of an hour to untangle enough of them to allow her to slip into the room without tearing the whole mess of them down, but Kelda was determined to do just that. Maybe she wouldn't acknowledge their existence at all, and Violet would be left to wonder if she'd been swindled by whomever she'd paid to install them. Maybe instead, she'd make Violet tell her who the engineer was, just so Kelda could go find them and try to figure out what kind of mind built out a web like these strange ones. She was mollified slightly by the eventual discovery that they seemed to merely be alarm spells rather than trap webs, but the need to slow down and work as much as she had unexpectedly, left her annoyed even so. She remained undecided about how to reference the matter, right up until she sensed Violet's approach towards the room. As had become habitual when in Violet's presence, Kelda shielded herself against the other woman's Craft (she rarely had time to allow herself to be distracted by the omnipresent seduction wrapped around Violet). She hid herself from view long enough to ensure that the witch was alone, and then revealed herself sitting quietly composed in the chair before Violet's vanity.

"Lady Kaos," she greeted the witch as she turned to face her. She looked over the other woman, marking whatever changes had or hadn't come about in the weeks since the women had seen each other. Had it been months already? Time moved so quickly when she was busy. Money showed up where it was supposed to and business was booming; she'd had no reason to track Violet down before now. "I've missed our little chats, haven't you?"

Sometimes Violet wondered if who she used to be would recognize the woman she was now. They seemed to have very little in common with each other, and yet the steel of her spine and the sharp spice of her Craft remained a constant. Her wardrobe had changed, growing both more varied and more elaborate as the need arose. She wore her hair down now on occasion, something she wouldn't have considered before. She smiled more, as did the Sirens who worked for her. And of course the men that she trusted to guard and protect her and her establishment were Shields and not Hell Lords.

But her mind was still sharp and her accounts meticulous, something she took extra care with as to never find herself on the wrong side of her benefactor. More than one person had inquired as to who had helped Violet rise from the Hell Lords ashes, and more than one person had gone away disappointed that Violet would not reveal her secrets to them. Violet Kaos wore secrets like a cloak that she could pull tighter to bring her warmth on windy nights. She didn't just carry them, she wove them together in patterns. And with the exception of offering up the names of those who had committed the most heinous offenses, she had continued to keep the secrets that she knew deep within her own mind.

It was a quieter night, which wasn't to say quiet. The Bodleian was never really quiet. But things were running smoothly and nothing immediate was screaming for her attention. She climbed the stairs to her own suite on the fourth floor, brushing Aleksy's spelled walls as she did. The Black Widow Healer had an unusual way of approaching things and Violet adored her for it. But hers was not the voice that greeted her when she walked fully into the room and closed the door behind her.

Wrong spider, Violet thought as she turned to find her benefactor sitting at her vanity. "That depends which chats you are referring to," she said. Her tone was casual enough, but her heart was racing. The Sapphire Black Widow had startled her and it took visible effort to slow her breathing. "I am fond of the ones that involve your pleasure about the money I am bringing in and how I am managing your investments. But I don't suppose this is one of those, is it?"

The names Violet had surrendered to Kelda belonged to a certain breed of Blood that was dwindling in Goth. One by one their lights went out, though no one could say Goth was any dimmer for their passing. Months later and the list still wasn't entirely addressed, but it was only a matter of time. Much as Kelda would've preferred finding a way to execute the bastards en masse, spacing them out enough that they seemed like unrelated incidents served her better. If anyone suspected it was Violet who'd led to their demise, someone might get it into their head to try and take revenge.

Kelda didn't have time for that.

"I suppose it could be, in part," the Black Widow allowed, her expression shifting to reveal that she was considering the matter, even though it wasn't what'd brought her here. "I am pleased with how things are going. Business seems to be booming, the books seem to be consistently right, and I've not encountered any reason to think you've been less than discrete about our arrangement. I have to admit that you've held up your end of the bargain well. How does it look from you end? The business has grown quickly; do you still have everything you need? How's... your staff looking?" she asked, the tone of the last question shifting a touch, perhaps indicating that wasn't such a simple question as it seemed.

"I have a situation that would be helped by a level-headed male. I understand they're in short supply, but if you have any on the payroll I need to borrow one. Someone gentle. I need him to work with a Widow who's been abused, and not get freaked out and hurt her or himself if she lashes out at him. You have anyone like that?"

Violet's muscles slowly relaxed as her benefactor acknowledged and praised her efforts. The Bodleian was by no means the only place a man could come to wet his dick in Goth. But it was the only place someone could come to find Violet and her Sirens. The experience offered within these walls was unlike anything found elsewhere. That reality translated to an ever expanding clientele willing to pay for the privilege of learning what exotic fruits the Bodleian had to offer. This was a game Violet knew how to play, and she played it well.

Yet the ease she had just felt began to seep away as the subject matter shifted, cold uncertainty slipping in to take its place. Did the Black Widow disapprove of her choice of staff? She did not believe she had violated any of their agreements by hiring males who had harsher backgrounds, but Violet was aware that her silent partner had some very specific moral concerns where the former Daughter of the Hell Lords was concerned. To think that a Dark Jeweled Black Widow wouldn't know everything there was to know about what went on here would be foolish. It was part of why Violet was so particular about fiscal transparency.

Never lie to a spider. It was perhaps the best piece of advice her father had ever offered her.

Violet thought of her Shields. Of the loyalty they offered her and the protection they offered her Sirens. She thought of their anger, their jealousy, their need to protect with the violence that ran through the deepest parts of their being. "No," she said, aware that Kelda may not like the answer. "I don't. I have plenty of males who can do part of what you are asking for. But gentle is not a word I would use with a single one of them. They have been trained to protect a witch from an assault, not protect a witch from herself."

If this was a test, Violet feared she might be failing. "Hearing myself say that out loud, I realize they need to be trained to do just that." She would rectify that, assuming of course she was allowed to. It was unsettling how every time she found herself in a room with her boss, she never quite knew if her life was on the line. Was it paranoia if they really had threatened to kill you? Violet didn't think so. She focused on her breathing, slow and steady, and hoped for the best.

"Mm."

For a moment, a single syllable was the only response to the Madame's words. Disappointment lowered Kelda's eyes, and set her jaw slightly askance behind her quiet lips. She seemed to mull the matter over for a few seconds, and the folding of her arms reinforced the thoughtful look of her.

"That's unfortunate," she mused, softly. Deceptively warm-looking brown eyes flicked back over towards Violet, and the directness of that gaze suggested that the spider had made up her mind about something. "I still need one, and I don't have alot of free time these days to spend headhunting. I'd like you to find someone who'd fit the bill. Can I assume you have some experience dealing with traumatized witches?" Her left brow hiked merely a half-centimeter, and yet it somehow cast enough shade to cover Violet's past.

"Discretion will need to be non-negotiable. You can hire him on as a Siren with all the usual contracts, and then dress it up like he's been leased to a long-term client, though sex won't be part of the arrangement." She stood up as she spoke, and closed some of the distance between herself and the Yellow witch, arms still casually folded. She considered Violet as she approached, taking in the precision makeup and the tailored clothes. She really was an incredibly striking woman, Kelda thought. It was no wonder, the profession she'd chosen. Hopefully, that talent would continue to work in the spider's favor.

"This is important to me, so do it right and I'll make it well worth your time. Deal?"

Violet was known for how her energy and her presence filled an entire room. Sitting alone in her suite with her benefactor, she found that all she wanted was to be as small as possible. A thing of no consequence, easily looked over. How small would she need to become before the spider lost interest?

Her employer's disappointment was written all over her, or at least it seemed so to Violet's eyes. She couldn't have anticipated that she would be having this conversation on this particular night, but that didn't matter. She needed something and Violet was unable to provide it. It was her job to anticipate the needs of her clients. Violet would be well served if she applied those skills to work towards attempting to anticipate the needs of her employer as well.

Violet's pulse raced against the pale skin of her throat when it became clear that Kelda intended to offer her another chance. She was nodding before the other witch had even finished her sentence. The words washed over her in a sick wave of memory. She was not forgiven and would never be. There was no absolution for her past. Her eyes lowered. "Yes. I have experience," she confirmed softly.

When the Black Widow stood and moved towards her, Violet worked very hard to remain still. Her instincts screamed at her to run, but she knew better. She lifted her face, but kept her eyes lowered respectfully. "Deal," she said. "Discrete, respectful, level-headed, gentle, not easily spooked, and unafraid of Black Widows. I will find him for you." She already had a few names coming to mind, but she needed to think carefully on each of them. If this didn't go well, if she chose poorly, she did not see it ending well for her.

Slowly she raised her ice blue eyes to meet the Black Widow's warm brown ones. "Is there anything else you require of me?"

Really, there was part of Kelda that was completely turned off by the level of deference Violet showed her. Regardless of her past sins in the Black Widow's eyes, Violet was still a Blood woman, still a sharp mind with plenty of assets that had nothing to do with the body that was currently testing the tensile strength of her bodice. For that alone, she was owed a certain level of respect, Kelda thought. To see her near-cowering like some kind of frightened child sat poorly with Kelda. In fact it chipped away at the very respect she thought Violet was owed.

Nevermind that it was Kelda who'd put herself in the position of this woman's overlord. Nevermind that she'd made it clear more than once that the price for fucking her over would be a brutal one. There wasn't much of a way for poor Violet to win in this sense, as Kelda was both the one frightening her and the one inwardly sneering at her for being frightened. The spider could have calmed the woman's fears some, had she been moved to do so. After all, they had an arrangement that was working well. Kelda had no reason to want to harm the woman, and actually stood to lose considerably if she chose to do so. Pointing that out might've at least enabled the witch to meet her eyes while speaking.

Kelda didn't bother, though, because as much as part of her disdained the display of deference, a different part of her preferred it. It was good that Violet understood how important it was to keep Kelda happy, wasn't it? Things ran smoother when there was too much fear present for the witch to get any ideas about trying to act out. Kelda was quiet, studying Violet until the witch lifted her eyes and asked if anything else was required. Though she'd likely hoped for a quick assurance that their business was done, Kelda instead let the quiet drag out another few seconds. The way she studied the Madame made it seem like she was actually conjuring another demand, or maybe re-evaluating the notion of trusting Violet with the previous one. In that moment Kelda was hard to read, and she made no effort to make it any easier on the other woman.

"No. That's all," she finally said, before stepping around Violet to reach for the door. She paused there with her hand on the knob, and turned back part-way to speak over one shoulder. "Level headed, cool under pressure. Not easily spooked. Yes. But not unafraid of Black Widows," she amended, turning a little more to meet Violet's eyes. "He'll need to be smarter than that." She turned back to the door, and a sight shield descended over her, vanishing her from view.

"I'll be in touch," she said, and then the door to Violet's room opened and closed, and Kelda ghosted away.

Despite the inherent challenge that existed in holding the Black Widow's gaze, Violet did not look away as the silence spilled out between them. She had made a commitment to her employer and had held her end. There was always the chance that Kelda would find her wanting. Violet certainly found those aspects of herself when insight mixed with nostalgia to show her the truth of her past and the role she played in destroying lives entrusted to her care.

But she had worked hard to get where she was, to care for her Sirens and her Shields both. It was uncomfortable to have such an oversight pointed out, an area she had missed when ensuring everyone's well being. It was a mistake she wouldn't make again.

She gave a sharp nod when the Black Widow told her that was all. The reminder that a lack of fear for Black Widows was nothing more than a sign of stupidity caused the small hairs on the back of her neck to stand on end. Kelda's voice remained after the sight of her was gone. For several minutes, Violet didn't move. Whether due to fear of the Black Widow's sudden appearance or her potential lingering presence, Violet neither knew nor cared.

When she finally allowed herself to move, Violet tore at the laces of her bodice until it released. Air flooded her lungs as she gasped for breath, inhaling deeply for the first time since she had seen the Black Widow in her room. Violet quickly changed her clothes before crossing to her small writing desk. Parchment and pen ready, she immediately began to create a list of potential males to vet, including making notes of their positive and negative qualities. This assignment had been given to her personally and she intended to see it done and done well.
