It had been weeks and weeks, a very long time in Nathaniel’s eyes, since he had seen Hrodi. An eternity, if he felt like being overdramatic. Between Hrodi’s schedule with the Boessons’ business interests and Nate's duties with Lucy, it could be hard to find time to get together. Nate wasn't pleased about it but he was at a lost as to how to fix it. He couldn't ask Hrodi to step back on his duties, he loved the sea. Nate might want to see Hrodi more but he didn't want to come between something Hrodi loved. Not until he had a good alternative.

Nate, on the other hand, loved taking care of Lucy. She was in many ways his grounding force even if they did create mischief together. He, however, did not like being in a Court setting. He felt confined and limited. Though he wouldn’t leave Lucy, so he would just have to keep managing. He sighed as he stopped a few inches short of the wards surrounding Hrodi's property. He really wished he could just walk in and surprised Hrodi. The only way he could think to do that was to have Lucy let him in. He really didn't want that since he couldn't just leave her outside. She would give him an telling off or Hrodi would. So Nate just waited for Hrodi. He knew he had arrived first since a light probe towards the cottage proved it was empty.

He checked the light warming spell woven around his body and prepared to wait. He didn't think he would have long. Hrodi was rather punctual in most dealings. Nate, however, was not very patient. As the minutes wore on he grew more restless. Unable to just sit still he started pacing across the road, counting his steps as he went. A minute or two later he huffed, bored with pacing and called in one of the pastries he had planned on saving for the next morning. Some type of berry jam and flaky crust.

He was about finished when Hrodi approached. Since it felt rude to be eating while Hrodi wasn't, Nate called in the chocolate version he had picked up for Hrodi. “Hey handsome,” Nate greeted after he licked his fingertips clean. “You are a sight for sore eyes,” he whispered softly as he looked the other warlord prince over. “Please tell me I have more than a few days with you,” he added with a soft purr.

It had been far too long, but finally, Hrodi would get to spend some time with Nate. There had been a few issues on the ship, and Hrodi had needed to fill in for someone last-minute after an employee had a dispute with his brother. His brother was at fault, of course, but it was still the employee who was temporarily moved to other tasks while they could get him into the rotation on Boesson Shipping's other ship. Some days, Hrodi wanted to throttle his brother.

Today was one of those days since Jarell had been especially abrasive. Hrodi never understood why his brother thought it was a good idea to prod at an already frustrated Warlord Prince, but he had managed to refrain from decking him. Barely. His sister's presence was the main reason for it. And because it would look bad for the owner's sons to be fighting in front of their employees.

But now he was home, heading up the path from the road through the scraggly brush that led up to his cottage. A smile reserved for Nate broke over his face when his lover came into view. His lover, who apparently had chocolate with him and knew exactly what licking his fingers like that would do to Hrodi. Suddenly Hrodi's pants felt a little tighter.

"A week," Hrodi said, trying to shake the last of his annoyance. It didn't help that Nate was standing outside; it was a reminder that Hrodi had been shot down when he had offered to get the spells keyed to Nate. Hrodi tried to focus instead on the fact that he got time with Nate either way. He had made sure that the schedules could be rearranged after he picked up the last trip.

"We can head to Eastville if you can't be away from the court for that long." Hrodi slid his arms around Nate and leaned in for a kiss, then forced himself to let go of Nate so that he could deactivate the spells and let them in. Even though there was no one around, Hrodi wasn't interested in removing any clothes outside.

Nate wasn’t blind to Hrodi's reaction. One it was Hrodi and he could read him fairly well at this point in their relationship. Two Nate was used to reading potential clients when he was a slave. He can't say he planned to spark a reaction in Hrodi, since rarely did he plan too much out. He had general ideas of how he would like things to go. However, he found that his generalized plans even worked out. He often went through life by the seat of his pants. One would think he would reconsider this given how his life had gone thus far. The whole gambling his life away plus slavery would be enough to cause most people to pause. But Nate liked playing the game of chance. Besides things hadn't turned out so badly. He had a handsome warlord prince to call his own and a new family to boot.

He held out the pastry to Hrodi with a wink. “This is for you. I figured a snack might give us a little energy for what is to come,” he implied with a knowing smirk. Not that he had planned on giving Hrodi the chocolate now but why not? They could use the energy, as dark jeweled warlord princes they burned off their meals off by just breathing it seemed. It played into Nate's fascination with food. He needed food and had been deprived of it in the past. No food meant he was weak and he refused to be weak again. He blinked those thoughts away, not sure where they had come from in the first place.

Hrodi's touched helped push those dark thoughts of dark times away. Nate noticed as he ran his hand over Hrodi's forearm and up to his shoulder how tense Hrodi seemed. He narrowed his eyes briefly, unsure why that might be. He chalked it up to Hrodi only just coming home from a trip on the seas. He absently rubbed his hand over Hrodi’s shoulder as he considered if he could stay a week or not. “A week shouldn’t be a problem. As long as Lucy has an escort I don’t have many other duties. I’ll take in with her and her escorts mid-week and we can see if I need to go back.”

He slipped his other hand up to the back of Hrodi’s neck as the other man pulled him close. He shifted his body so he could press against his lover. There was a very brief kiss, in his eyes, that had Nate growling when Hrodi broke contact and seemed to move away. Nate wasn’t having any of that and stepped behind Hrodi. He wrapped his arms around the Sapphire jeweled warlord prince’s waist and pulled him flush against him once more. “Better,” he grumbled, his mouth near Hrodi’s ear. “Are you going to let me in anytime soon?” He teased.

He knew Hrodi wasn’t much of an exhibitionist, even if no one was around for miles. It didn’t make much sense to Nate, not when they could just shield. Hrodi wore a Sapphire, the likelihood of someone spying on them was slim. Even if a crowded market. However, Nate respected Hrodi’s concerns and didn’t push too much when they were out in public. Things changed however once they were inside Hrodi’s territory, I.E. the cottage and the land surrounding it. They had a lot of fun on the deck during the summer. Maybe they could repeat the experiences if the weather held this week.

"That sounds like a good plan," Hrodi agreed. He was fairly certain that Lucy would do whatever she could to get him and Nate more time alone together. She was, after all, his favorite family member for a reason. Not that he told any of his siblings or his other cousins that, of course.

Despite Hrodi's efforts to push away his annoyance as he settled back against the other Warlord Prince's chest, Nate's next words, asking when he would let him in, sparked a flash of temper in Hrodi, bringing the hurt and rejection he had felt right back to the surface. Getting the security spells keyed would have been a simple, fast process, and Hrodi did not understand why Nate had been so quick to dismiss it. It felt like he had not even considered the option at all when Hrodi had offered it, and every time Nate was here waiting for him, it was a reminder that it seemed like Nate did not want to live with him.

Trying to hold his tongue, he deactivated the spells and opened the gate so that they could head into the yard. He continued up to the door of his cottage, resetting the security spells around the perimeter of his yard as he went. They were the sort that would let people out but not in so that he did not have to turn them off all the time when guests were leaving. After unlocking the door, Hrodi stepped inside and then finally he could not hold back what he wanted to say anymore.

"You know," Hrodi turned to face Nate just inside the door in his small foyer. "You could have been inside already if you would have let me get the spells keyed to you."

Nate’s frame went rigid as he felt Hrodi’s shoulders tighten. He wasn’t a hundred percent sure
but he thought it had been Hrodi’s temper. Hard to tell for Nate without seeing his face. It seemed to Nate that they were back to be on the wrong foot. He didn’t understand why. Nothing made sense as he replayed their interactions and words since showing up. Hell, he even tried to remember their last conversation, which had happened as Hrodi neared land. They usually tried to contact each once a day, providing Hrodi wasn’t too far out to sea. Nate’s Green could only reach so far. Their chat had been a recap of whatever had happened since they last had talked, a time to meet up, and a bit raunchy ending. Nothing to Nate’s rationalizing explained why Hrodi was angry.

Nate didn’t offer any resistance when Hrodi pulled away to take care of the spells or the gate. Nate just stared at his lover’s back as if that would yield any answers. He shoved his hands in his pocket and after a moment followed Hrodi through the gate. Normally walking through the gate was a level of security Nate enjoyed, he would usually relax. Not this time though. He followed Hrodi to the door, maybe once they got inside things would change. Or Hrodi would clue him in on whatever was happening. He tried not to think too much about how the body language Hrodi had reminded Nate of when Hrodi had to deal with Jarell.

He managed to step a foot inside the cottage when Hrodi turned on him. Nate’s nose flared, almost expecting a physical show of Hrodi’s simmering temper. He gritted his jaw as Hrodi started speaking. It took his brain a few moments to process what Hrodi was saying. His eyebrows draw together and he started to respond but managed only to stammer. He then growled and started again, “what the fuck Hrodi? This is what is eating you? Why does it matter? I’m here whenever you want me here.” He held up his hands, palms facing Hrodi, “wait when did you offer to have the spells keyed to me? I don’t remember that…” He also failed to see why it mattered now of all times. It didn't click that he had just been thinking about being keyed to Hrodi's spells so he could surprise him. He was now on the defensive.

Frustrated, he shook his head before he growled out. “Why are we having this discussion when we could be getting naked?”

Clenching his fists, Hrodi took a step back in the small foyer, so that he stood closer to the rest of the house. He was not feeling territorial so much as he was feeling closed in by the small space. Normally it would not matter, especially with Nate, but this discussion had swiftly devolved into an argument. That Nate brought sex into it, as if this whole thing should just be swept aside, was like a punch to the gut. He realized he was not the best at communicating, but it was trying here, and it felt like Nate just did not care.

“Because this is important,” Hrodi said in a low tone. “Or at least, to me it is.” Apparently it was so unimportant to Nate that he could not even remember the offer being made. Hrodi hadn’t brought it up again since the first time because he was afraid of another rejection. Based on Nate’s reaction, that had probably been the correct decision.

“It’s clearly not important to you.” Hrodi’s fists were clenched at his sides as he held his temper in check. Now he was wondering if this whole relationship meant more to him than it did to Nate. A little bit of doubt settled in his stomach. “The very first time I brought you here, I offered. It was so that you could be here whenever you wanted.” Hrodi wanted to know that Nate had a safe place to be even while he was away. Of course, the court was safe enough but Hrodi still worried. They had not found his friends despite looking hard for a very long time. As far as Hrodi could tell, they were probably dead.

“I get that not everything that matters to me will matter to you, but you don’t have to be so dismissive about it.” Nate had simply dismissed it without considering it the first time, and again now he just wanted to brush it aside.

Nate shifted his weight so he could react if Hrodi tried anything physical. It was pure instinct over Nate deciding to do so. He would never expect Hrodi to hurt him, far from it. However, his subconscious read into Hrodi’s step back as trying to draw Nate in deeper to the cottage. Maybe where he wouldn’t be able to move as well or defend himself. Nate pushed those thoughts away and wondered why he was having them. Though he knew it was his nature, as was it in Hrodi’s. Even if Nate sometimes forgot Hrodi was a warlord prince just because of how calm he was. That calmness attracted Nate as much as his normal stony expression. He made sure to remind himself that he wanted to be here with Hrodi even if they were fighting.

His frown and frustration deepen over Hrodi’s comment. He wasn't sure what to say about that. He was gathering it was important to Hrodi but he still couldn’t fathom why he hadn’t brought it up before. He didn’t understand why now was a good time. His thoughts circled aimless and he just wanted answers. However, he wasn’t sure how to phrase those questions without sounding dismissive or sarcastic. He surprisingly held his tongue which for Nate was pretty impressive. Though his silence could be read as being stubborn or even cold. He crossed his arms as he felt more and more on the defensive. He waited until Hrodi had gotten everything out before he dared speak again.

“The first time?” Nate asked through gritted teeth. “The first time when I was dead tired from looking for my most likely dead friends for the last twenty-four hours? You mean that first day? The one when I was freaking out that the black widow had taken them? Where I hadn't eaten in over a day.” His blue eyes narrowed as he growled out his words. That time had been stressful for Nate. He had lashed out at Lucy. He had nearly destroyed his room with his frustration and grief. Not to mention the nightmares that plague him when he finally got to sleep. Nightmares of the black widow finding him, hurting him, Hrodi, or Lucy. Nightmares that left him in a cold sweat, that made his skin crawl for days. Hrodi was mad he hadn’t accepted his offer then? When a black widow’s touch or even the brush of webs might have set him off? Hrodi had no idea, he had lived such a easy life. He didn’t understand what Nate would have been feeling. He decided to try and clue Hrodi in, maybe they could get over whatever this hump in their relationship was. “Hrodi,” he began in a soft, steady voice, “that day...if a black widow had touched me to key me into spells...or hell’s fire” he growled out the curse word as he lost his attempt to remain steady and in control. “If I felt a black widow’s spell I would have lost it. Your cottage wouldn’t be anymore, you might have had to kill me.” There was a slight shiver of fear up his spine as he talked, as he tried to explain his point of view to the man he loved.

He uncrossed his arms and scrubbed his face with his hands. He had hoped the movement would release some of the tension and fear in his body but it didn’t seem to help. He inside felt more vulnerable which he didn’t want to feel right now. He took a half-step outside of the doorway, back outside. He wasn’t sure what else to say. It frustrated him that he couldn’t figure out how to communicate with Hrodi right now. If they had been in a better state, he would have just invited Hrodi past his first barriers. Easier way for the other warlord prince to see how Nate was thinking and feeling. Also a very strong sign of trust.

He took a deep breath and forced himself from his own thoughts. He needed to be focused on Hrodi. “I...understand that this is important to you.” Though Nate couldn’t understand why it was worth fighting over. Maybe it was because he had never had his own place to worry about inviting someone to be keyed into the security spells. He imagined it would be a level of trust in the other person. That could be it? He didn’t know and heaved a sigh. “Can I ask why you haven’t brought it up before now? Were you expecting me to just jump on the idea? Knowing my fears?” He asked in a low voice.

“When I first asked, I didn’t know how afraid you were of Black Widows,” Hrodi replied and then clenched his teeth, trying to decide what to say next. When he offered, Hrodi hadn’t realized that it was all Black Widows, not just that specific one. Still... “I had thought that maybe you would trust me to keep you safe since I wouldn’t make you be alone with her.” Evidently that wasn’t the case, though, then or now. It made Hrodi wonder if Nate really trusted him at all. Or was he here out of some sense of obligation because Hrodi had freed him? That was his initial fear when Hrodi turned Nate down soon after freeing him. There would have been a power imbalance at the time, especially with Nate relying on Hrodi’s family for work and a place to live. Hrodi hadn’t wanted Nate to think that it was conditional on whatever relationship they had.

Had he not waited long enough? Hrodi had reached the point that he was afraid that Nate would lose interest, which was understandable given the amount of time, and he was also really tired of waiting. Even though he did not see Nate constantly during that time, the times that he did were enough to make things difficult.

“I would have thought that maybe some time after that, you would have explained more instead of just dismissing it like it wasn’t a big deal. But whatever, it’s fine.” Except it wasn’t fine. “I get it.” He didn’t really get it, though. “If at some point, you trust me enough to keep you safe from the Black Widow that creates these spells, let me know.” Hrodi eyed Nate for a moment, trying to leash his temper. “Unless you never intend to live here with me?” Hrodi couldn’t keep the creeping doubts at bay. What if this was just some fun for Nate and he had read the situation completely wrong? It wouldn’t be the first time in this area of his life.

Nate stilled completely at Hrodi’s comment. It took him a moment to fully consider what the other warlord prince said. Or at least how Nate understood it. He responded in normal Nate dramatics. He stepped forward and threw up his hands. “You didn’t realize?” he growled. “Where have you been in the last two years that you didn’t realize your lover was terrified of black widows?” He held up a hand to forestall an answer from Hrodi, “wait I can answer that. You kept your distance. Based on what you just said...your own father knows me better.” Nate knew he shouldn't lash out but he was frustrated and unable to leash his tongue at this point in their argument. “Have you not noticed my nightmares? Have you not paid attention to my distress when we passed by black widows in town?” He wasn't angry, just hurt. If Hrodi had been anyone else, except maybe Lucy, Nate would be lashing out in a different, more violent way. He didn't like feeling vulnerable or used at this point. He was questioning a lot all of a sudden. His chest physically hurt and he just wanted out of the situation.

He did manage to stay even though he didn't want to. He visibly flinched when Hrodi implied Nate didn't trust him or expect Hrodi to be able to protect him. It wasn't that at all. Nate couldn't explain his fears, not in a way Hrodi would understand. He had already tried and that had seemed to fall on deaf ears. He clenched his jaw at the next words to spill out of Hrodi’s mouth.

“Yes Hrodi, I never intended on living with you,” the sarcasm heavy in his voice as his temper flashed yet again. “I didn’t wait for you for two years just to have sex and nothing else Hrodi. You know I wanted the whole deal, maybe not at first but you should know that by now.” There was a touch of defeat in his voice as he spoke. “Maybe you are the one with cold-feet in this relationship. Once you know what you want, come look me up.” Nate stepped back, deciding he was done with this. With Hrodi, for the moment. ”Have a good week off,” he said bitterly as he turned and walked away from the other warlord prince. He didn’t stop or hesitate as he left the safety of the security webs. He walked for what seemed like forever, unaware of the trap he was heading into. Into the embrace of the black widow who was the source of his fears.
