All is Theft, All is Fair

This job was the best, and things hadn't even really taken off yet.  The paychecks allowed her to live comfortably AND send money back to her siblings.  And that wasn't even the best part.  The sheer rush of travelling around and finding all the new boltholes?  Of learning the ins and outs of this small city and learning who was who?

That was the best part so far.  She'd seen Eastville and like most had assumed it was as picturesque and perfect as it appeared to be.  But less than one day of scratching at the surface, and she'd found all sorts of the usual.  Not as bad as Portland or Goth, no.. no major Gangs.

Not yet, anyways.

But the beginnings were there.  She'd started laying down some roots.  Doing a little snatch and grab here and there to get some credibility in the local area.  Nothing too terrible.  But enough - just enough to get the beginnings of a name for being shady.

Just enough to make sure she could nudge around without getting her nose slapped too hard.  It was a safe way to live when you had to work the shadowy backstreets.  A small name meant you weren't likely to be on anyone's shit list, and keeping it small made you 'not' a threat.

That was the point.

She was bringing herself down to Moe's basement just to let him know those jobs had gone well - though she had to admit that walking in to find Moe throwing things was.. startling.

If it weren't for the fact he'd given his word that she had his protection, she'd probably walk right back out.  Light Jewelled or not, he was a Warlord Prince.  Even if he had broken Jewels - ok, maybe especially if he'd had broken Jewels - he'd still be a dangerous fellow.

Rather than turn around and walk out, she took a moment to close the doors and clean off a chair, settling in and folding her hands atop her lap.  She'd even put on a nice outfit today - cleaned herself up from the grease and dirt as always - and then made her hair look a hell of a lot nicer than it had the last time he'd seen her.

Her eyes trailed over to the mess.. the new mess.. and then back to his face.  "Throwing paper doesn't help.  Want some knife lessons instead?"

Moe was getting impatient. He hadn’t been impatient in over a thousand years, and had he not been so annoyed at the state of being, he might have enjoyed the novelty of it. If the impatience had been because of a delay in construction of the school, or in receiving a crate of wine from Dhemlan, then he would have just shrugged it off, but this was impatience about his QUEEN.

Someone had tried to kill her, and whoever they were they were not yet dead. It had been weeks, and they were still breathing. Rayne had traced a single ingredient in the poison back to a thistle that only grew in a remote area of Rockland, but it had multiple uses, which meant that people searched it out… which meant people sold it… and where there was money involved, there was a trail, except there just wasn't. He had talked to, bribed his way into, threatened his way over and snuck in the back doors of every apothecary in the province. He had his team and his net spread out everywhere and yet… nothing. He had expected to have at least a year to set up a network before he really needed to use it, but he had not had that year.

He was failing.

Odelle was alive because of Chiara, not him.

A glass jar with a collection of buttons in it smashed against the far wall before he realized it had left his hand. They had been important buttons too, each with a matching one out there, on a coat somewhere, and a spell linking one ot the other. He was about to walk over to collect them when he noticed someone standing in the door of his over-crowded office.

Lisbet looked much more grown-up than she had the first time. He had given her a bonus to go buy herself a better wardrobe the first week, after three construction workers mistook her for a student arrived far ahead of schedule. Well dressed or not, she was in his space, and he found himself growling at her as she didn’t retreat from the doorway.

Her words though, and the blaze` tone, jogged him just enough out of his bad mood to send a quiet thanks to the darkness for sending him a second that wasn’t scared of him. Normally that was a bad thing, but for her job, it was the best qualification he could have asked for.

“No thank you. Knives are messy and I prefer my kills to be nice and clean. How did the sneaking go? Anything good?” He brushed some stray hairs out of his face, then just gave up and redid his ponytail, still grouchy but trying to pull himself together.

"Sit down."  She smiled, motioning at his chair.  And then she rose up, wiggling her fingers at him.  "I'll fix your hair, and talk about the things I can find."  Her lips turned upwards, eyes sparkling in mischief.

"Or you can keep growling at me.  But unless you're willing to break my face and scramble my brains, you aren't going to spook me out of the room Prince Mischief."

She chuckled, her head tipping to the side.  "We'll argue about knives being messy later.  As far as the sneaking goes.."  She rose up, moving behind him as he sat.  Moe seemed more amused by her demands than upset.  She wasn't surprised.

Moe wouldn't take it well if a Blood ordered him around - but Lisbet was his Second.  She was Landen.  It would be like being barked at by a small dog - he'd humor her with amusement because there was no real threat there.

Well, not one HE would see anyways.  But he'd promised her safety, and in return?  Well she wasn't going to stab him.  Or anything harmful, after all.

She undid the tie in his hair, and then began pulling her fingers through his hair.  She even gently rubbed at his head.  Little massaging maneuvers and humming until she was certain that he was calmer.

"I did about four snatch and grab jobs to get a little room in Eastville's underground.  Went easy and great.  No need to worry about paying anyone off."  She pulled out a comb, carefully pulling it through his hair.

"That being said.. I take it your hunting job didn't go well?"  She thought about it, pulling a new section of his hair to comb through.  "Did you check the Landen shops?  If I was going to use Poison to off someone - and I probably wouldn't do that, but if I were - I wouldn't go to a Blood shop.  Too easy for your sort to track things with each other.  I'd plan for that."

Moe sat. He wouldn’t have for most people, but Lisbet was growing on him and had been ever since she stuck a knife into his wall as a way of saying hello. He liked her style. So he sat and tilted his head back as she began to play with his hair, his anger and annoyance dissipating slightly under the barrage of ‘this isn’t working and I don’t care’ that she was exuding. Landen were usually so much less fearless.

“What if I dressed up in a sheet and pretended to be a ghost? Then would you run screaming? Or better yet, acted all proper and polite and normal.” He shuddered, that last one freaking even him out a bit. His eccentricities were Moe. Without them he would be boring and that was a fate worse than death.

Lisbet reported as she played with his hair. She had been a busy bee over the past few weeks without needing Moe to micromanage her, which worked just fine for him. Being lazy was basically his second job. Maybe his fifth job. Oh, fine, twenty-seventh, but who was counting.

He was.

Right.

He grimaced as she brought up his own failing. He HATED failure. It made him feel like the world was spinning out of his control and that was unacceptable. He didn’t have the Jewel strength to wrestle it back which meant he had to rely on his head. That he hadn’t thought to go to Landen shops stung and made him cross his arms and huff and grind his teeth. “I didn’t think of that.”

Then he realized what that meant and without warning, he leaped to his feet, bleak mood forgotten. “MINION, grab your coat, we’re going on an adventure!”

She played with his hair, marveling silently as always at how soft it was. One would think that he'd be.. harsher on the hands.  She wasn't sure why she kept thinking that, but she did.  Did all Dhemlanese people have such soft hair, or was this just a 'Moe' thing?  She wasn't really eager to find that out.

Moe got this sort of treatment because he was Moe.. because she knew he most certainly would not take it as anything other than what it was - a tool to help him calm down.  Something to help drain the stress out so that he wasn't likely to blow up the school he had just had built.  Taht sort of thing.  Good heavens.. if he were any other Blood she'd probably just keep the touching to purely professional hand shakes.

Playing with his hair, really, was their version of a purely professional 'hey calm down'.

"If you dressed up in a sheet, you'd be naked.  At which point I would be either terrified, or poke fun at how little your tool is.  I don't think there'd be much of a middle ground."  She sounded somewhat amused at the thought though.  "And if you went normal.. I'd believe that someone bewitched your brain - and I'd feel sorry for them, since it would mean that you probably settled yourself into their head and are just causing all sorts of havoc."

She wasn't really certain how that worked.  She knew that Blood could .. what was the word.. 'compel' each other.  Thank goodness Landen's brains would melt under that sort of pressure.. she rather liked knowing her brain was her own.  Sure, someone could manipulate her into things.. but they couldn't magically do so, and that was important!

He hadn't thought of checking Landen shops.  She wasn't surprised.  Moe was pretty nice to Landen, all things considered.. but he was still Blood.  Worse, he was Long Lived Blood, which meant that culturally Landen were somewhere on the scale of... mice.  Yeah, probably mice.  And what big cat would go checking in the mouse's larder for poison?

She pulled her hands back as he leapt to his feet, lifting an eyebrow.  "Minion?  I don't even get a cool name, I'm just.. minion?  Pfft. See if I play with your hair again, Mr. Grumpypants."  She gave him a smirk, running her fingers through her hair once more before smiling sweetly.

"Would you like me professional, or.. working.. for this adventure?"

Moe was all but bouncing as he headed to the door. He chose to ignore her comment about sheets and nudity because really, what did it matter to Moe what she thought was hidden by his trousers. Lisbet was, like, twelve. He did, though, have words about her new title.

"Fine, you can be Head Minion, how about that?" He asked, all the while running to his closet for a coat. Pulling the door open he looked through the selection and picked a trench coat that would have looked normal if the lining had not been patterned in loud, yellow and pink pigeons, and was so covered in patches from all over Terreille that there was hardly one inch of the original gray fabric.

"I want you boring, darling, so anything in your closet will do. Landen apothecaries will be full of things which means I am going to ask around about every single item and draw all the attention by flinging funds around, and you will be in charge of looking through the back rooms while they flock to my awesomeness!" It was much of why Moe put on such a show, after all: everyone watched him instead of his minions, plus when he did want to go undercover, all he had to do was dress normally and he could walk right into town without anyone realizing it was him.

It worked every time.

He pulled the door open and motioned his minion out the door.

Half an hour later, they were walking into town, Moe's long stride forcing his minion to run to keep up, because she was a tiny little munchkin of a superspy. In town, he snagged a landen carriage and only when they were on the move towards the nearest Landen settlement to the source of that thistle.

Since it would be a bit of a trip, he leaned back and put his feet up on the bench Lizzy was sitting on and grinned at her. "So tell me, Minion."

When he didn't elaborate, her eyebrow rose up and Moe sighed dramatically.

"Tell me something about you I haven't bothered to ask about yet."

"Head Minion?  Please.  I'm more elegant than a mere 'head minion'.  High Minion will do."  Lisbet smirked, reaching up to crinkle her fingers in her hair.  It made it look just a little mussier, a little curlier... a little more child like.  With two fingers pinching at her cheeks to redden them up, a slight shift in posture, and the untucking of her clothes?

Moe was definitely a babysitter.  OR she was his little bag carrier.  Either way!

"What do you think?  If I try to be too normal next to you then that will get attention, but little street urchin earning a few marks shouldn't get a raised eyebrow at all."  She grinned, cocking her head and letting her fingers flick here and there like most children did when they were fidgeting and trying to look like they weren't.

Running to keep up with Moe probably kept that illusion up.  Not a problem, really, since anything that assisted in getting her to keep that 'personality' in mind was a good thing.

Of course, then Moe had to go and ask questions.  Questions about her, personally, which made her smirk.

"You haven't ever really asked questions about me, Pidgeon Boyo.  So that's hardly a difficult question."  Her head tipped up, eyes rolling towards the carriage ceiling as she tried to think of something interesting.  "Um... I got some pirating lessons this year."  Yeah, that was more interesting.  "Learned to sail a bit.  Commandeered a ship.  Oh, and the family is originally from Dharo."

She could have spoken about the mystery grandfather - but no.  She didn't really know anything about him, wasn't sure she wanted to.. and what would she say?  'Grandma says that a Blood Male focused on her, wanted her, and she went through three days of hell before he just up and left.  Tada... leads to me.'?

Yeah, that was a stupid story.  It was a TRUE story, but stupid.

"Oh.  And I like wearing pink when other people aren't looking."

“You look perfect, Minionette, now budge,” He said, and left it at that until they were in the carriage. Moe had expected to just zone out while she chattered and answered the question he hadn’t been all that keen to pay attention to (at least for now, he always carried a memory crystal to record conversations for later. People always thought he wouldn’t remember just because he was pretending to nap… poor fools.

However, the mention of pirating was too juicy not to jump on. “So you and Peter, pirates on the high seas? Which one gets the eye patch and which the peg leg, eh?” He winked, then grinned. “That could come in useful, though. There are the occasional item I like having smuggled in, you know. It could come in handy to have a boat. Minion, buy me a boat. I mean, buy yourself a boat. I’m sure I have the money for it.”

Moe didn’t know any longer just how wealthy he was, only that it was a shitton of money and all of it well-invested. Money was the only thing his useless father had been good at, he just failed at the spending and using it to gain real, tangible power. Moe didn’t have that problem.

“And Dharo? Not all of your family. That complexion doesn’t come from that Territory, I’m quite sure of that. The long-lived part of your heritage probably comes from Dhemlan, though of course it could be Askavi I suppose. Who knows, maybe we’re even distantly related. My uncle Andrea moved to Kaleer close to a millennia ago and that man… wow. He could seduce the pants off a statue.” His grin grew wide and a little feral, “I really must contact him again, now that I’m here. Do put that on my to do list, Minion. Maybe I’ll set you two up on a date, though really I should just send you on a date with my brother: he has a stick up his ass just the same as Peter, and you two get along swimmingly!”

Oh, and Pink! Pink! What fun his minion was.

“Lizzy, I will pay for you to buy yourself an entire new wardrobe if you just wear all pink in public for a single week.”

Minionette wasn't shabby.  It wasn't shabby at all.  THAT was a nickname she could live with.  "Well... I mean, there was a ship battle.  Sort of.  So I was diving under the water with a few others, right?  And when we were trying to come up, there was suddenly all of this ice.  So Peter and I swam out further while the Blood worked their way through the ice.  They were fighting on OUR boat... so Pete and I took THEIR boat.  It was a good bit of fun."

She shrugged, kicking her feet a little to keep that odd notion of 'childlike' stuck firmly in her head.  "And if you want a boat, I'll get on that.  When we get back.  I'll see what I can wrestle up for you.  Smugglign is the purpose?  You're going to want something... eyecatching then, I think.  No one ever thinks the flamboyant boat is going to have the illegal shit.  Probably.  I actually haven't picked the brain of any dockworkers... I could ask Pete.  He'll have a good idea."

She drew up short as he brought up Dharo, eyes squinting a little at him before she shrugged.  "Grandma was Dharoan.  There was a ... visitor... for three days.  She couldn't stay in Dharo after that in case he came back, so she came here.  Mom was born.  And that's that.  SO.. Dharoan.  All I know is the guy was a Warlord Prince, and that grandma was terrified of him."

Well, it wasn't ALL she knew.  She knew that her grandmother had flinched almost every time golden eyes peered at her.  She knew that the easiest way to keep peace with the old woman had been to not go out in the sun too long, so that the odd skin tone wasn't so obvious.  And she knew that when Grandma had died she'd felt both grief and relief in equal measure.

"... you're kidding right?  When I wear all pink I look like I'm... ten.  Maybe.  It will be awful... and you're going to pay me enough to buy a new wardrobe, a horse of my own, AND a luxurious vacation for at least two weeks at the best and most pampering of places."  Non-negotiable, that.  She wanted massages, and food, and not having to stare at his books.  She really wanted to not have to stare at his books for a while.
