Winter 193 - Tarn Nataniel

Winter had arrived in Little Terreille and Roland's mood darkened along with the skies.

He hated being cold. These days he was always cold, no matter how many fires he started. Tarn Nataniel felt colder as the days passed and the shadows grew longer. Roland tried to put it out of his mind by clearing his desk of work. He opened and read several invitations for Amerys that requested her presence at this baby-kissing or that opening, or a dinner being held by people who thought they warranted the attention of the Queen of Little Terreille. Roland wrote polite declines for a few of them. Amerys understood how much her presence, or lack thereof, could influence a person or organization’s standing. She might wish to go to all of them, but Roland also kept in mind the times and dates of each event and minded Amerys’s need to take time for herself or spend with her males and her Court.

The thought of Amerys’s other males caused Roland set down the invitation he was reviewing. He and Dax would never be friends and Roland was fine with that. Mani was a good kid but he was, after all, a kid. Not too many in-depth conversations he could have there. Roland’s thoughts passed to the man who’d recently bonded to their Queen and exhaled. He’d waited too long to speak with Davos Sheane already. He told himself that it was out of respect for Amerys, which was true. Then he waited out of respect for Hayden, which was less true but still true. Then he waited because the Red Prince probably needed time to get acclimated to the Court and the various people he’d work with on a daily basis. They’d had some passing conversation in Rockland, but Roland had otherwise avoided him in order to focus on other matters.

A small voice in corner of his mind reminded him that if he didn’t get to know Davos, he also didn’t have to acknowledge that the Scelt was just one more male who held a piece of Amerys that wasn’t his. It was a hard thing to learn that he wasn’t immune to the possessive nature that all Blood males carried in relation to their Queens. Roland found it easier to fold it up and file it away to be reviewed and dealt with at a later day. But that later date had arrived and it was no easier to deal with now than it was months ago.

He sighed, rubbing his face. His stomach rumbled.

Two birds, one stone.

*Jerika, is Prince Sheane in the building today?*

His assistant replied immediately over their thread. *He is, Prince Roland. He was on his way to his office.*

*Thanks, Jerika. I appreciate it.*

Roland stood up and grabbed his coat, then headed off to find his bond-brother.

Better late than never, he supposed.

Some enjoyed the chill that winter brought; the promise of Winsol gifts and the gathering of family, the merriment of such meals and drink and the joy of companions brought in warm hearths to combat the cold weather that settled through Kaeleer. Davos Sheane had once been one of them, too, back when he'd been a proud Sheane and the Ruler of Wexlow. He had feasted and sang and made merry with those of his Clan and those he led in matters of governance, defense, and living. But those days were now long behind - mere figments of memory only recalled with great effort through a fog of pain. Davos had lost wife and child both to the cold of Winter, and thus the serious Prince was especially melancholy in these days of service renewed and life remade.

He had just settled behind his desk in the newly appointed office in this magnanimous monstrosity of metal, wood, stone, and marble. Tarn Nataniel was unlike anything he had ever seen and yet as they were starting to fill the Court within it, some part of him marveled over the ego of Man to build such an edifice in the center of what was, in Davos's eyes, already an overbloated landmark of civilization. It would have been easy for Davos to become morose and lost in old memories, as he was wont to do during these days. Instead he had turned to gather up a book that Amerys had given him; a gift most welcome from the one who'd given him a hand to draw him out of the whirlpool of depression and dark thoughts. Truly, meeting Amerys was an important step in his current road toward 'recovery' from the affliction that had gripped him for so long.

Roland Cade's arrival at his door drew his eyes up from the words laid out before him, his hand drawing down from ponderous mouth and set aside the text. Though Amerys's First Escort was little more than a stranger to the Sheane Prince, his esteem was held highly by the Lady of his Soul, and so it was with naught but warmth of the hearth that Davos's lips peeled back into a full smile.

"Prince Cade." He said in honor and Protocol but lined it with the esteem of a man who might call his brother 'Sir' when he knew it were to annoy him. Rising to his feet, for he'd laid up fine shined shoes upon the countertop, he became once more a rail of a man draped in a silken sheet. "Good morning." Offering his hand toward the seat bare and unused before him, he furthered his entreatment one motion more by striding forth, taking the back of the chair, and opening it for Roland's use. "Please come in. What can I do for you?"

Roland stepped into Prince Sheane’s office, casting a surreptitious glance at the layout. Amerys mentioned that Davos was a reader. Roland respected that. Too many people weren’t readers and it showed in how they spoke or thought about things. The offices in Tarn Nataniel were spacious and well-designed, but that didn’t make the Territory Court feel any less cavernous or impersonal. This place could be seen from anywhere in Goth. Roland wondered what the regular people on the streets thought of it.

Roland closed the distance between, returning Davos smile and accepting the offered seat. Amerys also said that he’d ruled a District back in Scelt. Roland noted that Davos certainly had the demeanor of a man who was used to being in charge. Roland felt, for a moment, like he’d interrupted the other man in the midst of something important despite their respective stations.

He unbuttoned his jacket and leaned back in his chair, that smile still on his face.

I wanted to see how you were settling in, Prince Sheane. We haven’t really had a chance to talk or get to know each other. I’d like to change that. We both belong to Amerys, which is great, but she doesn’t have to be the only person we have in common. Not in my opinion, at least.” Roland said.

To that end, I was hoping I could take you out to lunch. Don’t get me wrong, the food here is great, but this feels way too...official for me, if you get my meaning.” Roland said, clasping in his hands in front of him. He wasn’t sure if Davos would actually go for it, but the best thing that he could do was extend the offer. He was doing this for himself, but also for Amerys. If it lightened her burdens to know that at least two of her bonded were getting along (or not actively hating each other), Roland wanted to give her that.

Are you free, say, right now?” Roland asked.

Davos had found it easier to smile these days. Certainly, that had been a surprise, what with the fact that he'd had never conceived of living in the urban snarling mass of Goth. It's stacked upon stacked buildings, smoke, overpopulation, and strange street culture were all a bit much for the Sceltic-born Prince to take in. Nonetheless he had gained a great deal of hope and regained some sense of himself after finding the Queen of his Soul. He had heard of Queen Bonds before but never experienced one until the day he laid eyes on Amerys Tiernan.

In quiet moments of introspection, he came to understand his cuz, Eamon, a bit better now. Davos wasn't quite ready to forgive the treason of the man whom he once called brother, but he could come to see why Eamon might be blind to the evils of his Black Widow Queen.

Roland's appearance brought that warmth easily to his features. While he did not know Roland well he nonetheless understood his place being close to Amerys. By their ties they would always have a unified purpose, even if their methods might differ. That in and of itself meant he could always count on Roland as an ally. A fact that Davos had considered a great boon given the last few years where friends had turned indifferent or became outright enemies.

"Well, this office - this whole monument, really - that I've found myself calling home is a little overwhelming, to put lightly Prince Cade." Laughter threaded his words and his smile bloomed brighter. "But I can't say I mind getting away from the smog in Goth. I'm still new to the Territory and finding my way around, really. I've become a bit of a recluse, truth be told. I just feel a little overwhelmed whenever I leave the Court grounds."

Roland's offer of food resonated in the slim Prince, who immediately rose to his feet. "That sounds splendid. I've only sampled a few places in the city but found most of them to my liking. The street-faire was surprisingly good, but I'm sure I'll like wherever you're taking us. It'd be good to chat - like you say, we have common cause."

He patted his stomach, a little laugh coming from the Scelt. "Besides, what Dark Jewel says no to food?" He gestured for Roland to lead out of the room, and he slid the other into his pocket, affecting a casual and relaxed posture.

Roland was finding hard to dislike Davos Sheane thus far. He was gregarious, the kind of guy that Roland thought he could spend some time speaking to and not feel bored. That was a rare thing for Roland and an extremely rare thing for many Princes. Between Princes, many things could be said in a single sentence and many more understood or inferred from a bit of body language or a simple sound made in consideration. Roland enjoyed learning about people. Davos seemed like a man with stories to tell.

Yeah, I can understand that. Tarn Nataniel is pretty imposing.” Roland said. He’d heard the whispers in the cafes and among his peers. Tarn Nataniel was far larger than the previous Territory Court and locked up just as tight. Amerys was safe here, yes, but also distanced from her people. Not that she’d ever let that happen, but getting out of this place was a good reminder that the rest of the world existed and that they were here for bigger reasons than just making sure Little Terreille operated at peak efficiency.

The street food is great, but there are some good establishments easily reachable by coach or the Winds. I grew up in Port City. Lots of good food there, too.” Roland said.

I was thinking Nharkavan today. I’ve been craving something with a little spice lately. I think you’ll really like it.” he said. Davos was right in his estimation that no Dark Jewel said no to food. Tarn Nataniel’s pantry told the truth of it. Draven alone could empty the pantry and it seemed like he often did. He and Jon both bore the Green, so he was no stranger to hunger, but he imagined that Davos, Breck, and Draven could easily clean out a restaurant if they were ever of a mind to do so.

Right this way, then. There’s this great place just up the river, in Kemp. You’ll love it.” Roland said, leading the way out of the room. He had kind words for a few of the Guard that he’d befriended over the last year or so, and had easy smiles for a few other members of the Circles. Creating good working relationships with everyone at Court simply made the place better, so Roland was all for it.

Shouldn’t take us long to reach the landing pad. We’ll be there in no time.
