Distinguishing Features:

Personality

Personality:

In public, Roland Cade is smart, good-looking young man with his best years ahead of him. He knows the right people to talk to for a (legal) good time and there isn’t a place in Little Terreille one can name that he’s unfamiliar with. Even his detractors admit that he converses easily on a number of subjects, but listens intently and asks questions when presented with a topic or idea outside his experience.  He disagrees without being rude or unkind, making others feel at ease with a good-natured charm that an aristo would envy. Even during heated discussions, the Prince is level-headed and respectful of Protocol, trying to keep everyone from spoiled Queens, surly Black Widows, and volatile Warlord Princes in the right frame of mind reach solutions that benefit Little Terreille’s people.

Privately, Roland is scarred from a chaotic childhood where he fought to keep what little he had from those stronger than him. He hates appearing weak or outmatched, but rather than withdrawing, it makes him think harder and fight harder to achieve his aims.  His clothing was often worn and threadbare and he ran extensive confidence games alongside his mother to stay fed and warm for more than an evening. When the gangs of Goth showed up and started flexing their muscle, they picked up and moved again and again. One day, Roland’s mother picked up and moved on without him, leaving him to fend for himself. Roland learned his first hard lesson in loyalty from that betrayal. Since then, he strives to keep a small core of trustworthy people around him to help advance his plans.

The expensive suits he wears as an adult and the fine meals he enjoys on a regular basis are no balm against the nightmares that visit him at least a few times a week. Running, being abandoned, and watching Little Terreille fall to chaos terrify him. Laws and Protocol exist to keep people in their proper places and unleash the best in everyone.  Orphans and the poor hold a special place in his heart, because he remembers the days when he had nothing to his name or even a name. The elderly also earn his respect as it was his surrogate parents who pulled him off the streets and taught him about the finer side of life. She showed him that adherence to Protocol and the Law are just as dangerous as the willingness to break them. Anyone can ignore the rules that don’t suit them.

Better men make the rules work for them.

Likes:
  • 1. Little Terreille - Despite its reputation as a haven for thieves and ne’er-do-wells, Roland loves Little Terreille for its imperfection as much as he loves its beauty. For every block held in fear by the Gangs of Goth, there are neighborhoods full of art, culture, and music from several lands and a number of diverse peoples. Little Terreille holds the only functioning Dark Gate anywhere. There’s beauty to be found if one knows where to look, and Roland knows where to look.

  • 2. Protocol - Protocol keeps the Blood from destroying each other and the world around them by extension. There is no shame in service, in honoring one’s leaders and one’s Queen. If more people understood that, Little Terreille wouldn’t be in its current shape. Or perhaps the Territory Court would have brought it under control. He adheres to Protocol even in tense situations and demands that others do the same.

  • 3. Learning- The day he learned to read and owned his first book was the day Roland learned that the world was so much bigger than the streets of Goth or even Kaeleer itself. He attempts to learn one new thing each day, be it a new word, the name of a new Territory, or a committing a new poem to memory. Each new fact is one that may serve him later. Or it won’t. What matters to him is that he is expanding his mind.

    Dislikes:
  • 1. Gangs- They break laws. They injure and kill innocent people in their fights for territory and power. Worst of all, they draw the young, downtrodden, and impressionable into their wars with promises of respect and power that aren’t founded on hard work and sacrifice. Roland hates the gangs and if he could fight them without sinking to their level, he would do it in a heartbeat. He just doesn’t know how.

  • 2. Winter - The winter months in Little Terreille remind Roland of his childhood, fighting to stay warm while often going to be hungry and afraid. As an adult, he’s better about hiding it but the Winter months in Little Terreille always depress him a little. He often enjoys hot coffee and a book to keep his mind off the darkest nights.

  • 3. Spoiled People - Roland understand struggle and loss. He’s worked for everything he owns and will own in the future, and he respects those that do the same. It angers him, however, to watch some people get handed everything...and then complain about it afterward.  The type of people who find a million marks and then complain they don’t have a bag to carry them in. Queens are most guilty of this but anyone who gripes about otherwise excellent service or is needlessly difficult grates on his nerves. Yes, Amerys is spoiled. Yes, she can be a pain in the ass. But she's his Queen and that is for him to handle. No one else.

    Fears:
  • 1. Little Terreille: the Eternal Crime Zone - Roland accepts that Little Terreille will always have crime and will always be imperfect. He does not accept the idea of Little Terreille being fully taken over by the Gangs and other two-bit crime lords that think his city is easy pickings. Each night the Territory of his dreams slides a little further toward the darkness and Roland fears that no matter how hard he fights, he can’t save it.

  • 2. Abandonment - Roland’s parents left him behind just a few years after his Birthright and that particular betrayal haunts him. Even Analiese didn't stick around, content to come and go from his life as the mood fits her. He’s constantly trying to build a family that will stay by his side, but he can’t escape that small bit of fear in the back of his mind. Dorian and Griselda have shown him all the love a man could ask for from his parents, but Roland’s fear of being left behind leads him to insert himself to situations where he might be better served playing the role of observer instead of leader.

  • 3. Freezing to Death - The streets are a cold place, especially in the Winter and Roland slept between his parents to keep warm on several occasions. After they left, he stole coats or blankets from merchants to keep warm. In his tenth year, a freak blizzard happened after he’d settled for a nap in an alley. He woke shortly after it started, but found himself covered in snow. The experience left him with (what he thinks is) a permanent chill in his bones. Roland is often colder than others during the winter months and will wear extra layers to stay warm. He sleeps under two comforters in the winter and cannot sleep without a light sheet over his body even during the spring and summer.

    Craft Strengths:

  • 1. Diplomacy - Roland always makes an excellent first impression. And second. And third. He never appears flustered or heated even during tense discussions with others. His mien appears warm and genuine, allowing him to present and discuss ideas in a fashion that the target finds acceptable, if not wholly pleasing. His skill in this Craft manifests itself in the ability to find and say just the right thing to win someone's favor or mediate a dispute.

  • 2. Defensive Shielding- The first thing Roland ever learned was how to hide from people who wanted to hurt him. The second thing was how to shield in a hurry when he couldn’t hide any longer. Roland’s practiced his personal defensive shielding for so long and so often that he can fully envelop himself out of reflex even in the seconds after waking up when most people groggy or still trying to remember where they are.

    Craft Weaknesses:
  • 1. Warming Spells - Roland is terrible with warming spells, something he regrets deeply during the winter months. No matter how hard he tries, he can’t even warm a tepid cup of coffee to make it palatable. He wears layers in cold weather and sleeps with extra blankets to offset the problem, but he envies those who can warm themselves without issue.

  • 2. Whimsy Craft - His parents tried to teach him some of the better slight-of-hand cons and tricks during their years on the streets, but anything that involved Whimsy Craft failed miserably. Roland attributes this to his need to understand exactly how the trick or con works to the point that he pulls apart whimsy craft and can’t reassemble it. Of course, his parents just figured he was useless and made him stick to acting in their cons. Maybe that’s why they left.

    History:

The boy who would become Roland Cade was born in Port City, Little Terreille to a pair of Jewel-less grifters who loved the idea of being rich more than the idea of working for it. There were deeply irresponsible, yet somehow conceived a child within their first year of marriage. Roland doesn’t think about or use his old name, mostly because it serves as a reminder of how terrible his life was while they were in it. He was stealing as soon as he could walk and his parents used him to peddle numerous hard-luck sob-stories to relieve the kind of their marks. No matter how much they brought in, though, there was never enough to eat or buy better clothing. The boy grew to hate winters in the Territory because the cold always meant misery.

Blessed with a Purple Dusk at his Birthright, his parents saw him as their meal-ticket out of the slums, moving to Goth to ply their skills. Early attempts to teach him Whimsy Craft failed miserably. The word “useless” became a frequent  epithet his parents used to define him. Shielding craft was easier to learn when they started throwing stones at him. At ten years old, the boy finally felt like his family accepted him despite his shortcomings.

They abandoned him in the winter of that same year.

Alone for the first time in his life, the boy fell back on his parents’ tricks to stay fed and find shelter each night. Many of those nights found him weak or ill from hunger while trapped on the cold streets. A year-end blizzard nearly killed him outright, leaving him with a permanent fear of the cold. During Winsol, he tried to steal the purse of a local Red Moon House owner. She almost knifed him but halted upon seeing the lanky, underfed  young man.

You’re lucky, Pretty Boy. Most men who steal from me lose much more than their good looks.

Lady Griselda Hallows wasn’t a bleeding heart, but she hated watching children starve. She’d grown up on the streets of Little Terreille, same as him, and showed him how to stay alive. He delivered her messages. He picked up her clothing from the cleaners. She taught him to read, taught him about Protocol, and how it kept the Blood, their people, in check. In time, she introduced him to her sometime-lover, sometime-business-partner, Prince Dorian Cade. Cade took a shine to the young Prince as well, filling in the blanks of Protocol training that he’d missed. For his thirteenth birthday, the boy chose a name to honor his adoptive parents and the start of his new life.

    Roland Cade was born.

Apprenticing for Dorian after his offering, Roland soaked up knowledge about business and accounting. His heart however, was into making deals. Meeting people and staying up to date on events inside and outside the Territory became his meat and drink.. He’s made friends in Dharo, Nharkava, and even among the Dhemlanese. Venturing into logistics on his own in his twenty-seventh year , Roland encountered a number of powerful people interested in making life better in Little Terreille. Foremost among these was a long time friend of Dorian’s, Prince Randolph Montressa.

That lead to his first meeting with Randolph’s daughter, Analiese.

Ana was the first woman to make him consider a future outside of business and acquisitions. The pair grew close over the next two years, learning of their similar outlooks on helping the downtrodden. But where Roland loved Protocol and the inner workings of Court as method to help the people,  Ana hated the politicking and the pageantry, and how little the Court did to deal with the gangs. Eventually they parted ways, unable to reconcile their differing views with their each others' actions. They parted as friends and still talk now and again.

Roland met his bonded Queen, Amerys Tiernan, seven months after his break-up with Analiese Montressa. He was initially wary of the Bond due to the stark difference in their ages but the young Queen's temperament is oddly exciting to the Prince, reminding him of Analiese's prickly ways. When they met and Bonded, Roland had just accepted service into Laurel Gold's Court as a liaison to the merchant class. He spent six months executing Laurel's demands, using his spare time to visit Amerys when he could. Eventually, he went to the ruler of Portland Province and asked for his contract to be transferred to Merkton so that he could be near his Bonded Queen.

Laurel smiled and said she'd think it over.

Exactly six seconds later, she looked Roland in the eyes, laughed, and said no. Laurel disliked Amerys and wasn't willing to help the Queen by giving her such a competent male, bound or not. Roland has despised Gold since thenand he began working to catalog her legal assets so that he could someday put his Queen, a worthy Queen, on the Province seat.

Roland threw himself into his work to deal with the end of the relationship and his separation from Amerys. He’s traveled across the Little Terreille, meeting with Blood and Landen businessmen, hoping to establish stronger ties that will lift up the whole Territory rather than one or two Districts. His main focus is always Goth, however, and trying to provide a better example to the people than the criminals and miscreants tearing the city apart a piece at a time.

Logain Morr’s seizure of the Territory pleased many of the business leaders of Little Terreille, but Roland disliked the Territory Court that grew around him. Morr refused to address the Gangs of Goth and their corruption but no one was willing to fight him. Now that he’s gone, Roland sees a chance to make Little Terreille into something beautiful, a Territory that doesn’t need crime or the gangs to flourish, and possibly with a Queen strong enough to bring long-needed stability to the land.

He just has to stay alive to see it happen.

    Character in Play:

Roland Cade, First Circle member of Laurel Gold’s Court, sat back in his leather office chair. The Hayllian meditation balls chimed softly, no longer clacking together the way they did when he’d first received them over ten years ago. He was proud of himself for mastering that skill, but that pride quickly gave way to darker thoughts as he processed the information at hand. His foster father, Prince Dorian Cade, sat alongside his foster mother, Lady Griselda Hallows, and watched him in silence. They were waiting for Roland to say something, to weigh on the dire information they’d received just three nights ago. This was the first time they’d all been able to meet since it happened. The Gangs of Goth were on the warpath and no one was safe, but even that was secondary to the larger news that rocked Little Terreille to its foundations.

    Logain Morr is gone.

Dead or missing didn’t matter. All that mattered was that the man who’d run “Little T” for the last two years, seemingly immovable and untouchable, was off the table.

The offices of Cade Logistics had been a flurry of activity ever since.

Prince Dorian leaned heavily on his cane. He covered a wet cough with his pocket square before putting it away. The old man liked Morr, even if he didn’t like his methods. Next to him, Lady Griselda, one of the premier Red Moon House operators in Goth, smiled at Roland. She hated Logan but she was doing the same thing that Roland and Dorian were doing: calculating possibilities. Lucrative assets were now up for grabs and the trio had been eagerly claiming what they could, as they could, from whomever they could.

One of his aides de camp, Jerika Houston, stood off to Griselda’s left side. She was managing a pair of psychic threads with Roland’s other two aides who were out scouting for further information about the happenings in Goth.

Roland counted seven breaths and then set the meditation balls down at the corner of the Dhemlanese-made desk.

All right, what do we know?

Loghain Morr’s house is a crater, Prince Roland. Morr, Benedict, Lady Marchalan  and a number of others are missing and unaccounted for. The Territory Court is gone.” Jerika said.

Gold is in the wind.” Dorian said, his expression grim. Dorian worked with Karl Rodan, her accountant, to manage a number of Laurel’s legitimate business ventures.

They found Rodan’s body this morning. They’re still looking for his head.” Dorian said.

What about Hyster Megdalene? Can we get a meeting with him?

Sorry, Sonny. Ol’ Hyster’s in the wind, too. Took a couple o' my girls with him. Word is he slipped down into Dharo early this morning.” Griselda said, shaking her head. Roland fought down a flash of annoyance at his foster mother’s use of his childhood nickname in front of his Jerika. He didn’t like mixing his childhood with his business. But Griselda wouldn’t have cared if he made a big deal out of it. I gave you a name when you didn’t have one, Sonny. I’ll call you what I damn well please, so long as it’s respectful.

He reminded himself to reach out to his friend in Dharo and confirm Megdalene's whereabouts.

Should I even ask about Lady Talbot?

Still confirming, sir. Preliminary report says it’s not good news, though.” Jerika said.

Roland sighed. He’d hoped to use one of the Province leaders to rebuild the Province the right way as soon as possible. An explosion sounded off in the distance and the music globes on his desk trembled. Every night this chaos continued, more people died and Little Terreille slid further toward the Abyss.

“All this chaos, all of this suffering. Who benefits?” Griselda asked.

Sure as shit ain’t the gangs. They’re all too busy settlin’ old scores and makin’ new ones. Whoever started this shitshow hasn’t spoken up yet, but if they don’t, someone has to do something." Dorian said.

Sir, I’ve got a prelim report about what happened out at Morr’s place. Word is...this was a targeted attack.

A dark jewel. Really dark. Ebon Gray, maybe. Or Black.

    Griselda gasped.

Bullshit! There aren’t any Ebon Grays or Blacks in Little T. We’d know about that!” Dorian said. He looked to Roland for confirmation. Roland sensed the old man's outrage and beneath that, his fear. He needed to hear that he was in the right, that the world he knew wasn't changing faster than he could handle.

Roland could have given him that.

    He didn't, though.

Not if they didn’t want to be found, we wouldn’t.” Roland said, rubbing his chin. “I want confirmation on that as soon as possible, Jerika. Tell the others not to discuss it with anyone except me.

Jerika nodded and relayed the message.

    Dorian cursed.

Alright, this is our chance to step up. Let’s get to work.” Roland said.

    What are you thinkin’, Sonny?

Roland held up a finger, asking Dorian to wait, while he spoke to Jerika.

Comb the ledger of Laurel’s accounts that we made. Find me every mom-and-pop business Gold financed or favored. Find everyone who owed her money or that she invested money with. I need all of her legitimate holdings brought under our umbrella immediately. If she’s not out of the picture, we’re cutting her out of the picture starting now. Same with Megdalene’s.” Roland said. The idea was forming in his mind. It was a long-shot, a hell of a long-shot.

    But there was a chance.

    He looked to Dorian.

Dorian, I need you to talk to our friends. Start with Prince Montressa, please, and tell him I’d like to meet with him. If I can get him on our side, a lot of others are going to follow out of respect, same as they will with you.” Roland said.

Griselda’s eyes narrowed. “You aren’t going after the Province.” she said. It wasn’t a question.

No. People are rattled right now about what’s happening. Whoever took out Morr’s Court is an outsider. Think about it: no one’s had the balls to take on Logain for two years. A few independents chipped away at the edges but all those dark jewels scared people.

If the rumors are true, whoever did this brought in an Ebon Gray, or even a Black, and tore Logain Morr off his throne. Maybe they meant to do it. Maybe they didn’t. If they aren’t idiots, this is an opportunity for the party responsible just like it is for us.
    ” Roland said.

They’ve got to build a Court.” Dorian said, suddenly understanding.

Exactly. And if they’re smart, they aren’t going to overlook us long. We need to get to work right now. Lady Griselda, I need you to have your girls keep their ears to the ground. If they hear anyone saying that they’re calling the shots, or that they know who is, I need to know.” Roland said.

You got it, Sonny.” Griselda said.

Little Terreile has a chance to set itself on the right track again but we can’t wait. I need those meetings as soon as possible. The Gangs of Goth might be trying to kill each other but we’re going to do something they should have done a long time ago. We’re going to unify the business sector of Little Terreille.

And then we’re going to Court.
