Personality

Personality:
There was a time when Rain considered herself an optimist, when she had a positive outlook on a great many things and believed all good things were possible. This was probably during her childhood but it has lingered in her mind as a now sour reminder of the person she has become. Somewhere in her life, she traded optimism for a cynical realism and an overflowing dose of caution. She could name the places in the timeline where it happened but remembering those events always brings a bout of yearning -- there could have been a different life for her, somewhere. Maybe she could still make that happen, but it would take a great deal of effort and change.

Rain is a survivor, but not because she has a strong will and believes in herself. She’s a survivor because she’s afraid of dying. So many things have been taken from her already and she does not want her life to be yet another of those things. She longs for a day when she can drop her disguises and stop running, a day when she can plan her own course in life and not have it determined for her by someone else’s poor decisions. She’s hugely resentful of her family for that -- it was her father’s poor decisions that started most of this chain reaction. The spirited nature of a Black Widow still resides within her but it is a tempered, scarred, and enduring spirit -- one that does not break easily in spite of everything that has been thrown at her.

Rain is usually seen as pensive and quietly working. She is short on words, long on observation, and seemingly difficult to get to relax. Her privacy is her own and fiercely guarded. To be invited into her workshop is an honor entrusted only to a few close friends. More people have seen her bedroom than her workshop. After her son’s birth, Rain’s preferred type of sex shifted to one night stands. This began initially as just a need for flavor but has now developed into an avoidance of attachment, since attachments bring pain in some form. Keeping people out is preferred to letting them in to do more harm somehow. But don’t let her silence deceive you into thinking that she is a passive person. Rain’s ferocity is just another guarded thing, a beast that she keeps caged. One sure way to bring it out is to threaten her son (which would be disastrous for the people involved) but most people who interact with her see a milder version of that ferocity whenever they invade her privacy.

Aside from her trust issues, Rain can be kind when dealing with children, quietly scathing when dealing with stupid adults who should know better (this includes herself by now), driven to succeed at her Craft (if not her life), committed to raising her son on the right path, and secretly proud of being so resourceful (a by-product of her past life).

Likes:
  • 1 - Scents. Perfumes, essential oils, the rich scent of foods -- Rain surrounds herself with a stream of sensual delights in these forms. It seems like she is never wearing the same perfume or oil from one day to the next and her workshop boasts a different oil being diffused daily. Sharing scent combinations with someone is one of her favorite subjects.
  • 2 - Confirmation that she’s doing the right thing. After having so many decisions made for her and the consequences of other peoples’ decisions affecting her, Rain enjoys the moments when she makes a decision, or knows what to do correctly, or has something valuable to offer, especially when it brings noticeable positive returns. This newfound freedom of will and its effects, though it be surrounded by fears, gives her hope for better days.
  • 3 - Cooking. What Rain lacks in some of her talents as a Black Widow and creating potions, she is somehow able to combine flavors and ingredients in the kitchen like no other. Cooking gives her a freedom to experiment with something new and to savor its results. She doesn’t like cooking for a great many people but she enjoys cooking for a few and seeing their enjoyment.
Dislikes:
  • 1 - Being so afraid. Rain remembers a time when she was fearless, when the world didn’t feel like danger was lurking in every passing stranger. Whether this was naivete or truth, Rain hates that she is always questioning peoples’ motives, always on guard for something she isn’t sure is coming or not.
  • 2 - Dead bodies. Be it animal or human, Rain gags and avoids the sight of the grotesque changes death imparts. The gore doesn’t bother her -- it’s the smell of decay, the bloating, the paling and cold rubbery feel of the skin. How a person goes from something warm and alive to that is...monstrous.
  • 3 - Being controlled. As a child, she didn’t mind being guided or told what to do. But now, since she has seen so many of those orders end in suffering for her, she bucks whenever someone tries to exert control of her, be it emotionally or physically. She is finally at a place in her life where she wants to control herself so stop trying to tell her what to do!
Fears:
  • 1 - Lord Black. There’s a reason that Black Jewels are so rare. To hold that much power is… Rain doesn’t have words for all that it is. But that immense power, combined with how ruthlessly and easily it was used to decimate the Court and the gangs -- what side is this infamous Lord Black on? And who’s to say he won’t level the Territory one day? Living in the shadow of such a possibility makes Rain very scared to work with anyone close to that amount of power in the hopes of avoiding notice.
  • 2 - Dorian being kidnapped. Rain believes she could escape a hostage situation if she was ever in one. But her son? Dorian is too sweet for this world. And Rain knows that he’s her weakness. She takes great care not to let him wander too far unattended and tends to use Craft to hide his features on her more paranoid days.
  • 3 - Vulnerability/intimacy. Rain’s fears of intimacy are not a sexual thing because for her sex is a transaction, an encounter. Her fears in this realm stem from emotional, financial, and intellectual sides, though mostly emotional. She fears letting someone in who will hurt her because it has happened so often in the past. She is afraid of letting others know how ignorant she can be or how financially struggling she might be. There are so many things that have been used against her in the past and she’s trying to keep them from being used against her now.
Craft Strengths:
  • 1 - Psychic Cleansing. This is Rain’s bread and butter. She works for hire because she is able to scrub away the psychic nooks and crannies often overlooked by most Black Widows. Clients joke that she was named for that ability to “wash it all away like the rain.” In reality, Rain is thorough and her expertise with this Craft comes from a practice of concealing her own secrets.
  • 2 - Black Widow Security Webs. Paranoid that someone will find her and Dorian, Rain has developed very subtle security webs that are harder to detect even after being tripped. Her apartment is covered in these various webs.
Craft Weaknesses:
  • 1 - Detecting and curing poisons. While pretty good at designing poisons, Rain is pretty bad at detecting poisons and even worse at curing them. She might be able to guess a component or two but not enough to properly counteract it.
  • 2 - Mind delving. Rain’s personal fear of what she may find lurking in someone’s mind is the biggest barrier to why she cannot perform this Craft adequately. She never delves deep enough to learn anything of use and tends to leave her patients feeling disoriented for hours after trying.

Son: Dorian Ardelean (born Teodor Cantemir), Prince (age 7)

History:

Rain hardly remembers her life in Dena Nehele, where she was born. In truth, her strongest memory of it is the day they left it, passing through the Gate into Little Terreille to begin their new life. At the time, Rain, then known as Natalya, remembers how eager her father was, how he enthusiastically told the family how much good this move would do for them. For almost a decade, her father’s words rang true. The Cantemir family had a small house of their own, with friends for young Natalya and even a school nearby that she and her brother could walk to for their early studies. She remembers chocolates, dresses, home-cooked family dinners, and never wanting for much. Even her Birthright Summer Sky seemed to reflect this green season of life.

What young Natalya did not know was that her father had been taken into the Gatekeepers. And somewhere around her teenage years, either his luck ran out, or business turned bad, or...maybe it had all been a well-crafted lie to begin with.

She remembered the day that her body revealed her to be a natural Black Widow, an incident that somehow worried her parents. A naive Natalya didn’t know why -- she thought it was something unique and interesting! She began studying with an elderly Black Widow and couldn’t wait to learn more. But, for some reason, her parents cautioned her against letting everyone know. Though this was probably the start of things going awry, Natalya would always recall the first major step towards their troubles as being the day her father came home with bruises and lacerations all over. Their parents tried to hide what had happened, tried to keep their children sheltered still, but the next week, that veil was ripped away. It came to light that Codrin had been working with the Gatekeeper gang, running their books, and had been training his son Marin as well, but there had been a...misunderstanding. One that he could fix, he assured them, but that was the beginning of the end for their family.

Natalya’s mother, Ioana, was killed by a rival gang, the Hell Lords, in a scuffle between members over who owned which piece of property when Natalya was sixteen. It was an accident, they claimed, but suddenly, everything idyllic about Natalya’s life was tainted as she realized how her parents had been getting that wealth and at what cost. The gang that had given her family so much now became the one that had taken away something so dear. While Codrin and Marin clung closer to the Gatekeepers for support and revenge, Natalya went in the other direction.

Natalya’s defiance was at first directed towards just the Gatekeepers and the Hell Lords. She wanted nothing to do with either group (including her father and brother) and had convinced stupidly herself that a gang like the Chimerans or the Dragons were not as bad. At least they weren’t killing people (that she knew of, yet). But what she did not realize, at her young age, was how much all of these gangs had in common, and how pervasive they could be.

She was pressured on when to make her Offering. She was advised to take a Dragon lover. She was counseled to keep the baby. She was told to train further with the gang Black Widows. Because she thought that these were the things she wanted, she did them. And by the time she realized what she was doing, she became afraid of saying no. Her pride meant that she would not go crawling back to her father, which meant that she had little where else BUT the gang to turn. She began to feel trapped.

As more scuffles and unrest between the gangs came, as her Black Widow skills went towards more insidious uses, Natalya knew that she did not want this life for her son. When the father of her child was killed in another senseless (to her) scuffle, she knew she wanted out for good. But finding that was difficult.

It wasn’t until year 191 that she had her chance and even then, she was still afraid to take it.

It began with a Lord Black, a dangerous Black Jeweled Warlord who descended upon the Territory Court and decimated it without pause. Natalya’s father, Codrin, was at the Court when it happened and, though she hadn’t spoken to him but fleetingly in the years since her mother had died, it still ripped a hole in her heart and left questions in its wake. Why had he been there? Were the Gatekeepers involved in something at the Territory level? What of the Hell Lords? Was there any way to escape this unending cycle of violence?

Later that same year, she got an answer about the Hell Lords as Lord Black once again descended upon the gang with the same ruthlessness.

In the chaos that ensued and the power vacuum formed, Natalya saw her chance. Using her Black Widow skills, she altered her appearance and did the same for her son, taking to the streets until she stumbled upon a small clinic that treated women and children, run by the young Healer Braelynn Davenport. It was there that she took a new name : Rain. She was little use to Braelynn at first, since her mind healing skills were abysmal, but she was determined to earn her keep somehow. She became the bookkeeper and supplemented her income with cleansing spells. And thus she has spent her time since, keeping hidden and away from the gangs, never letting her son far from her sight, and trying to earn enough money to pass them through the Gate to somewhere far, far away.

Character in Play:

It seemed oddly fitting to arrive in the midst of a night like this. As the storm raged above them, slickening the streets, Natalya Cantemir and her young son used the most of the wind, rain, and Craft to get them out of their old lives and, hopefully, into new ones. They said nothing as they hurried but their voices would have been drowned by the thunder anyway. The illusions that altered their appearances now clung to their skin in soggy fashion. But at least they held up.

She had not given much thought on where to go, just that they needed to get out before the infamous Lord Black found reason to come after the Dragons like he had the Hell Lords. But truly, was there anywhere in Little Terreille that was safe from a Black Jewel? Probably not, but Natalya could only run so far on so little that night.

Was it fate that turned down that street and drew her towards that flickering witchlight like a moth to a bright flame? Or was it just desperate hope that someone was on the other side of that door? She would wonder that for months to come but in that moment, she knocked on the door to the clinic that catered to women and children. Could anyone hear her amidst the thunder? She was beginning to believe that no one could but then the door opened, startling her. The thunder hid her yelp.

An older woman, rounded with age, stood in the door. Natalya could only imagine what she looked like, with her soaked dark hair and hazel eyes. Her illusion hid the tattoos on her arms and shortened the length of her hair (something she would fix in reality once she had the chance) so she looked enough like herself to notice herself in a mirror but not enough to be recognized in this part of town. “I heard...this place…” Natalya gasped, winded from running.

“Come in, come in,” the woman replied, ushering her quickly. “No good standing in the storm like that. Enough sicknesses to catch without its help.” Clutching her son’s hand tightly, they stepped into the clinic, into brightness and shelter. “What’s your name, dear?” the woman asked as she motioned for them to follow her. With her back turned, the woman did not see the indecision that crossed over the Black Widow’s face.

She had thought of so much but she had not thought of who she would be.

Her real name, Natalya Cantemir, would no longer work. The gangs would find her and her son, Teodor. In a burst of indecisive inspiration, as thunder shook the walls, she answered, “Rain! Rain…Ardelean.” There, enough of a Dena Nehele name to explain her looks but nothing to betray her lineage. “This...this is my son...Dor...Dorian!”

Dorian, exhausted and confused, promptly burst into tears.

Immediately, Natalya-who-was-Rain knelt and brushed the drops of the storm from his face. “It’s alright, baby, it’s alright,” she soothed. “We’re safe now. We’re safe here.” It was the only assurance she could give him then and it felt weak. She could only hope that she was not lying to her son, for she had had enough lies in her life. Even if they had to live under aliases for now, her son would know the truth of why. And from there...well, she would figure it out tomorrow.

“Rain Ardelean,” the older woman said kindly. She had probably heard stories like this before: a woman showing up at the clinic, afraid for her child’s life, giving a fake name to stay safe. But she didn’t say anything except, “I’ll let Lady Brae know that you’re here.”

And that was how she became Rain.
